News from the SCRIP Table

Meijer is still holding our earnings until September, but we added another $105.62 to our future check in July. Harding’s eScrip for June also netted $32.74 for Trinity. We were able to send a $523 check to our Kalamazoo County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans for the LSSM Backpack fundraiser. They will return our funds and add $475 in supplemental funds.

Fifty-five backpacks filled with school supplies were delivered to LSSM early in August so the caseworkers can distribute them to the foster kids before school starts. We would like to thank all who donated backpacks, school supplies, and time as well as all who shop at the SCRIP table and/or participate in Meijer Community Rewards and/or Harding’s eScrip for making this fundraiser a success. Due to your support we already have a sizeable inventory of supplies to kick start this project next year.

Thanks once again for helping

Evangelism, Communications and Fellowship Committee

Since AAL and Lutheran Brotherhood merged into Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, local grants have been administered by the Kalamazoo County Chapter Board. Trinity has had two members on this Board since it began and still does. However, Katie Yarger will be finishing her term next year and we need to find a replacement. This group meets only one evening a month to carry out their business. If you are a Thrivent member and could serve in this capacity, please contact Janet G or Joyce Cleasby for more information. The term would begin next January, and having Trinity well represented is important.

Also, Thrivent members, Don’t forget to vote your “CHOICE DOLLARS”

STEP ONE: Visit thrivent.com/choicedollars or Call 1-800-847-4836 and say “thrivent choice” Your ID is the number on any Thrivent product you own.

Thank you to Teresa and Tristan Smith for their willingness to collect pew folder sheets every Sunday! Our pew folders are a very important and suc-cessful tool to Trinity. It helps us to recog-nize one another and to follow up with visi-tors. Please sign them and pass them back to the center aisle seat of your pew. Thank you, Donna & Kim

Trinity Fellowship Happenings On Thursday, July 29th, fifty-five TLC’ers went to Shakespeare's Pub. We cheered at TLC's softball season, ate burgers and such, mingled and agreed we should do this again... so, watch for another social in October! Thank you to Liz Menck for a great idea! Fort Custer State Park was the gathering place for thirty-two TLC campers August 6-8th. On Saturday over sixty of us enjoyed a cookout, fol-lowed by laughs around the campfire, and the echoes of a beautiful trumpet sounding Taps at dark (thanks, Steve!). A brief devotion was shared on Sunday morning with readings and songs put together by Ardis, with Heidi on gui-tar, thank you guys!

A big thanks to Ardis and Holly for creating and coordinating this refreshing outing!

To all ladies who are new members of Trinity and to long-time members as well!

You may have wondered how to become more involved and thus be more a part of our church family beyond coming to Services on Sunday. I invite you to talk to me, Marianne Fuerst, or many other women who are in one of four WELCA Circles at Trinity. Joining a Circle is a great way to learn more about the Bible and God’s Plan for us and to become involved in WELCA’s many activities.

You are invited to attend the WELCA Fall General Meeting on Tuesday, September 14 at 7:00 in Fellowship Hall. You will get an overview of Circle business, be entertained by an interesting program and meet many active Trinity women.

Come, join us. We’d love to have you become an active part of Trinity’s family. In Christ’s name, Marianne Fuerst President of WELCA

Let’s Play BINGO !

Last month, a group of Trinity members organized an afternoon of Bingo at Ministry with Community. Everyone had a great time so we would like to make it a monthly occurrence. It would be the third Tuesday of the month from 2:20-4:30.

Since parking there is limited, we would meet at church at 2:15 and car pool. We need a minimum of 5 people– men and women– but no more than 9 at a time.

We also need to provide prizes for the winners so if you cannot go, we would appreciate donations. The most popular prizes were chocolate bars, boxed candy such as skittles or M&M’s. Jars of nuts, snack crackers and pop tarts are things that are a special treat. As winter comes, things like lotion, socks and gloves are also appreciated. We hope to start in September. There will be sign up sheets in Fellowship Hall or for more information, Call: Rasma McMullen at 349-9429 or Joyce Cleasby at 349-9977

Sacristy Renovation

There has been a buzz going on about the Sacristy renovation that is now complete. If you did not have a chance to visit on the day of the blessing, August 8, do stop in to see this amazing space!

The renovation has been a long-held dream for altar guild members. However, worshipping and working in a historical building means there is always a pressing need for repair somewhere else, so the work was often postponed. Some of you may not know that in the original building this was the Pastor’s office. In 2009, Trinity lost a long-time member, Grace Liehr, who had been active in the choir and the altar guild. She left a large bequest to the church divided among music, graduate Christian education, and general memorial. To honor Grace and to fulfill the dream of a new Sacristy, memorial funds were used to finally address the renovation. Prior to the demolition, the room had an ancient ventilation fan (that did not work) taking up two feet of space on the east wall, a deep drop-in cabinet for the frontals, an old metal cabinet for the acolytes, a deteriorating plaster ceiling, and peeling countertops, to name just a few issues.

Through the dedication, planning and countless hours of volunteer work from members of

our congregation, at last the renovation is complete.. While peeling off the old carpet, tile flooring underneath was found to be covering the original wood floor. Hours of painstakingly scraping off the old adhesive (mostly done by Dave Wohlfert) allowed Mitch Borges to refinish the floor. Our beautiful embroidered brocade altar frontals are now housed in a custom cabinet designed and built by Dave Kramer. Each frontal has its own drawer to protect the delicate embroidery and fabric. Dave Wohlfert built a cabinet to house and protect the pew torches. Additional lighting is everywhere and enhances all of the beautiful cabinetry that was finished by our own members. Rich Ellstrom crafted a beautiful wooden cross and a clock crafted by Pat Mason hangs on the wall. Larry Gardner designed and built a rolling cart to move the cases of wine in and out of the closet.

One interesting addition is the piscina next to the sink. This is a drain that terminates in the

building foundation. In the past, wine that has been blessed for communion and water blessed for baptism were taken outside and poured on the foundation of the building. Quite a feat in the winter! Now the guild members can dispose of the water and wine through this device. Gerhard Fuerst has designed a decorative ceramic bowl for the opening of the piscina.

Larry Gardner’s original design, modified many times, has come to amazing fruition. Many

hands worked on this project.

The Sacristy was officially blessed during the prayers on Sunday, August 8 We gratefully acknowledge the many dedicated Trinity volunteers and paid workmen who completed this project. Youth News! “’You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first

commandment. And a second is like it: ‘you shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” - Matthew 22:37-39

When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was, he answered with the verse above; “Love God, and love your neighbor”. This commandment is at the center of all we do as the Church. Whether we study the Bible, build a house, play softball, serve a meal, have a potluck, or sing out “this is the feast” in worship, we do it out of our mission to love God and

our neighbor in response to God’s love for us.

The mission of youth is no different.

As a key part of the church, it is the goal that everything done by the youth would lead toward more full understanding of God’s love for us, our love for God, and our love, service, and witness to our neighbors both inside and outside of the

church.

This fall we will continue that mission through solid Bible Study, enjoyable fellowship, exciting service, and effective out-reach. Below are just a few of the things happening this fall!

The People of God: Unity in the Midst of Diversity Session 1: Reading the Bible

Theme Verse: “For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope”. (Romans 15:4) The Christian Bible is a complex book or, library of complex books. With its 66 books of various genres, it is a fascinating collection of materials. These books were written in ancient languages for ancient audiences of ancient cultures for the purpose of communicating to those people a love relationship between them and their God. How do we as a people in the 21st century take them, read them, and make sense of them for our times? September 21st – Matthew the Apostle is Commemorated In Jesus’ day, tax collectors, such as Matthew, were scorned as traitors and collaborators with the hated Roman occupiers. So how could such a person become one of Jesus’ trusted 12? Jesus said, “For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” “Follow me,” and Matthew got up and followed him.

Back to School September is a month of new beginnings, fresh starts, earlier schedules, reunions, and hard work. I love the Fall for many reasons but with it comes increased prayer time for me as I think of students, teachers and aides, counselors, bus drivers, custodians, lunchroom staff – all working together to create positive experiences for our children in an educational setting. Just yesterday, we saw our son, Jim, off to graduate school in Ohio. It was tough to see him pack up and start off for at least a two year experience. We know he has honed his skills and is ready to take this next step and we are excited that he is happy and eager to take this on. Next Saturday, we move our daughter, Ellen, into an apartment at U of M. She is also ready to start the new school year with all the interesting and exciting times it will bring. As a parent, I have mixed emotions. A part of me is confident in our kids’ abilities and the choices they have and will make. Another part sees them as little ones needing to be protected and nurtured just a while longer. This is when I pray that God will keep them safe at all times, help nudge them into wise choices and keep me from driving Don crazy with my pitiful looks. Trust is vital – both trusting we’ve given them the tools to take big steps away from our daily guidance and also trust that I can leave this with God because of course, He always knows what’s best for us. Lord, help us to always trust you in every aspect of our lives. You are faithful and just and will never let us down. Because of your great love for us, Jesus came to live among us, teach us and show us the way to eternal life. Thank you for never giving up on us. Be with us always, AMEN.

In Christ’s Name, Kay Nelson
