In Other WordsP.T. Barnum's circus had a much bigger star than

Tom Thumb. Read about Jumbo.

P.T. Barnum liked to visit the London Zoo. He

always stopped to look at Jumbo, the elephant. Jumbo

was known as "the biggest creature in captivity." Barnum dreamed of making Jumbo

part of his circus. He offered the zoo $10,000, and the zoo accepted it.

As soon as the news got out, the people of London were furious. They did not

want Jumbo to go to the United States to join a circus. Instantly, Jumbo became

more popular than ever. Every day, people rushed to see Jumbo one more time

before he left the country. They bought pictures of Jumbo, books about Jumbo,

Jumbo neckties, and Jumbo hats.

By the time Jumbo arrived in the United Stotes, he was a famous star! Americans

lined up to see him. He became one of the most popular attractions in "The Greatest

show on Earth."

Read the passage. Then answer the questions.

Animal Lovers and the CircusSome people think that anyone who loves animals will love the circus.

After all, the circus is full of exotic creatures. Most traveling three-ring circuses

boast endangered elephants, white tigers, and bicycle-riding bears. In 1980,Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey's Circus even advertised that it had

a real live unicorn!

That advertisement caused many to question the treatment of animals in

circuses. Rumors spread about the origins of the so-called unicorn. Some

people said it was either bred from goats, or it was a goat with a horn glued

on its forehead. In any case, the poor animal sent a message. The message

told animal lovers around the world to keep an eye on the circus.

Summarize the author's point of view.

What does the underlined word in the following sentence show about the author'sviewpoint on the unicorn?

What does the exclamation point at the end of the first paragraph show about theauthor' 5 viewpoint? Explain your answer.
