and operated it for the next 15 years, 10 of them while living in Bakersfield. After that, John worked for various hydraulic equipment manufacturers, both in California and on the East Coast, ultimately retiring in 1984. John received the prestigious Hiram Award from our Lodge in 1994. Turning again to Scottish Rite, John is a 33°, White Hat, having been coroneted in 2001. For almost 13 years John was San Bernardino’s building manager and rental agent, and helped establish procedures and policies that are still being used today. John and Dorothy have a son, two daughters, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. It’s easy to understand why John has always been so very important, and so very helpful, to all of Masonry.

August 14, 2015 Dark for Summer

July 24, 2015 Dark for Summer

It is hard to believe, but the year is already half over, and it has been non-stop since the beginning of the year, and it does not appear to be slowing down! The month starts off with stated meeting on the 4th, and is quickly followed on the 6th with our 150th Anniversary Celebration! If you live in the local area, or are able to travel, I highly recommend coming to the event. The Grand Master of California will be presiding over the event, and if you have not had a chance to meet him yet, this is your chance to meet him and hear him speak. The event will start at 5pm and there will be a light dinner following. Please arrive a little early – parking is next door.

The following week, on Saturday the 13th our Job’s Daughters Bethel will be holding their Installation of Officers. Gentlemen, if you have not witnessed one of their events, I highly recommend you come down to watch their Installation, it is very impressive the work that these young ladies do! The festivities do not end there! The 4th of July is right around the corner, and if you are interested in purchasing fireworks, our Bethel will be selling fireworks again at the same location they did last year.

    SAVE THE DATE! August 15th!

As most of you know, we had to postpone the May-fest this year. The event is now a Summer Extravaganza! Many activities are being added to the event this year. The ever popular Bounce House will be back, and new games and activities have been added! They are even trying to find a dunk-tank, and I have agreed sit in the tank if they can find one! Similar to last year, we will be serving free hot dogs and hamburgers to all in attendance. Hope to see you there!

    Fraternally,

Bro Thad Coffing, PMMaster – San Bernardino Lodge #178

    Greetings from the West

For many, many years, we have had the tradition in our Lodge of the “Traveling Cane.” This is a special hand-carved Masonic cane that is awarded to the oldest member of our Lodge. Recently, the lodge presented the Traveling Cane to Brother John Welcher who has been a Mason for 59 years. John is also a 33° Scottish Rite Mason with 57 years membership. Known to many of us as “Little John”, John may be short in stature but extremely long on accomplishments. By age 14 he had pieced together his own car, just from parts, and was joining his older brothers in frequent trips to Muroc Dry Lake in the Mojave Desert near Boron, where, much like at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, land speed records were being set. John, then a fledgling member of the Southern California Timing Association (the SCTA, which is still an important racing organization) made several life-long friends at Muroc, two of them being Vic Edelbrock, who started the automotive speed equipment company that still bears his name, and Wally Parks, the founder of the National Hot Rod Association, which now has over one million members. John taught himself to play the harmonica, and was asked by the manager of a Los Angeles boxing arena to play in the ring during intermission, between bouts. A very beautiful lady, wearing an expensive fur coat, was always there, and after each performance she would stuff a $5.00 bill in John’s bib overalls. In fact, she even presented him with a brand new harmonica she had bought for him while she was traveling in Europe – a harmonica that John still has to this day. That pretty lady’s name was MAE WEST. On Sunday, December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese. On Monday morning, December 8, John was in the Navy recruiter’s office, volunteering to join the Regular Navy. He was assigned as a Gunner’s Mate aboard the heavy cruiser, Minneapolis, in the Pacific, and participated in 27 different landing operations. John was a Light Heavyweight boxer, even before the Navy, but while in the Navy, he had 22 fights, winning all of them. He gave new meaning to the term “Little But Mighty”. After the War, John returned to California and married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Howard, the day after he got out of the Navy. They have now been married over 68 years. In 1955, he started his own company, Pacific Hydraulics,

  • Greetings from the SouthBethel #33 Job’s DaughtersFun and Sucess at 2015 Grand Bethel

Job’s Daughters of Bethel No.33 San Bernardino enjoyed this year’s Grand Bethel trip to Visalia, California.

Lauren Petrosimo, Past Honored Queen, was selected to be Grand Bethel Chaplain for the State Of California.

Katrina and Miriam Gilbert entered items in the Arts & Crafts Competition and both received 1st Place Awards.

In Ritual Competition, Ashley Blevins, Honored Queen received the 3rd Place Award For her recitation of the 5th Messenger in the Individual category. Katina Gilbert, Senior Princess, received the 1st Place Award in the Story of Job.

Renee Warner, Past Honored Queen, took 2nd place in the Individual Friendship Award. This means that Renee traveled more miles and assisted in more meetings, initiations, GGOV’s, Installations, etc. than all but one Daughter in our Great State! Bethel 33, as a whole, received the 1st Place Trophy in the Friendship Bethel Category, making the Daughters of our group “the” friendliest girls in California.

In the hot August nights, as the balladeer use to sing, Neil Diamond I don’t think quite had this in mind. 100 degree days in a row. Coming up in August is our Summer-fest, August 15th, pass it around, this is one secret that we as Masons should spread round the block, and down the street. Now onto the really interesting bit of interest that I see coming up. What is Vegan Surprise? Well obviously it is 300 a plate surprise. I am hoping its at least 24 carrots the actual surprise, I believe in my heart of hearts, that it was bid on by a meat and taters sort of Mason, (is that the truth?), wonder if that includes a polo pony ride like they plan at the fest. Some Accolades are to be administered as well.

Richard Harlan our Worshipful District Inspector gadget as he is commonly referred to, was given the Golden Collar, (which I’m not sure what it cost him?). But acknowledges him as an active member of the ISC. The International Supreme Council of DeMolay, and I am not sure but I believe that one of the young ladies from Jobs was elected to serve on the Grand Bethel, Please send any corrections to Wor. Thad Coffing as I understand he didn’t practice his wobble for the big dance contest.

A thank you to Beverly Rainbolt for letting us use the parking lot of her restaurant so that our 150th went off with out a hitch (well a hitch for the horse but other then that).

Finally we are more than Half way through the year, why wait any longer to come and visit our new lodge. At our 150th I saw things you people would not believe, I saw sea beams glistening near shores of Orion, I saw war ships on fire near the Tanhuaser gate, and all these memories, (cough, cough) will be lost, will be lost like tears in rain. I know I saw some of you a month ago, where mites thouest be now, mon frere’s. Stay cool, come to lodge.
