Welkom

Tien jaar na de eerste Friese editie van Noorderlicht staat ‘land’ centraal in de internationale fotomanifestatie 2010.

Het Fries Museum toont met Land, Country Life in the Urban Age fascinerende foto’s van de mens in transitie. Meer dan de helft van de wereldbevolking woont inmiddels in steden – maar wat betekent die ontwikkeling voor het ontvolkende platteland? De stad eist mensen, energie, voedsel en grondstoffen op; het land heeft zich te voegen naar haar wensen. Terwijl de jongeren naar de stad trekken – vaak veroordeelt tot een leven in sloppenwijken – blijven de ouderen onbegrepen achter, op land dat generaties lang is bebouwd, bewoond, en bejaagd, en dat tradities en verhalen heeft gevoed.

Ver van ons bed? Zeker niet. We hebben er met ons consumptiegedrag en onze culturele expansie mede de hand in. Bovendien, ook óns platteland is aan het veranderen. In de Derde Wereld ontbreekt het de scholieren aan scholen, hier ontbreekt het de scholen aan scholieren. Daar worden boeren uitgebuit (mede door ons), hier kunnen de akkers nog slechts renderen met subsidies. Waar we hier te maken hebben met krimp en terugloop van voorzieningen, hebben we het daar over honger en rechteloosheid.

In Warzone, te zien in de Blokhuispoort, gaat het ook over land. Land als politieke entiteit, afgebakend door arbitraire grenzen. Als iets waar je strijd over voert. Maar vooral gaat het over het innerlijke landschap van soldaten die zijn uitgezonden om, ver van huis, te vechten of de vrede te bewaren.

Aangrijpende fotoseries transporteren ons naar conflictgebieden en maken de oorlogservaring invoelbaar. Je waant je in de huid van ‘onze jongens’, maar tegelijk worden we uitgedaagd na te denken over de morele aspecten van missies. Hoe zit het met ‘hun jongens’? Waarom wordt er eigenlijk gestreden? Mag en kun je democratie brengen, of gaat het uiteindelijk om olie die in bloed wordt afgerekend? Zullen we later net zo terug kijken op deze missies als op onze politionele acties in Indonesië of het drama Vietnam?

Het landschap is schuldig, schreef Armando, omdat het weigert te getuigen. Langzaam poetst de natuur de toegebrachte schade uit. Warzone legt het innerlijke landschap bloot, waarin oorlog niet zo eenvoudig kan worden toegedekt. Terwijl Land juist laat zien dat ook het landschap weerloos kan zijn – een speelbal van economische en demografische getijden.

Twee tentoonstellingen, twee actuele onderwerpen. Voldoende reden om ook

dit jaar de tocht naar het mooie Friese land te maken.

In Land, Country Life in the Urban Age, the Fries Museum is showing

fascinating photographs of mankind in transition. More than half the

world’s population now live in cities – but what does than mean for

the depopulated rural areas? The city claims people, energy, food and

resources; the countryside has to comply with its demands. While its

young people leave for the city – often condemned to a life in the slums

there – the elderly are left behind, no longer understood, on land upon

which generations hunted, built and tilled, and that nurtured stories and

traditions.

No concern of ours? It certainly is. With our consumerism and our

cultural expansion, we have a hand in what is happening. Moreover, our

own countryside is changing too. In the Third World there are no schools

for the students; here there are not enough students for the schools.

There the farmers are exploited (in part by us); here the fields are only

profitable with subsidies. While we here are facing shrinkage and

disappearing services, there we are talking about hunger and the lack of

basic human rights.

Warzone, to be seen in the Blokhuispoort, is also about country – this

time ‘country’ in the sense of a political entity, defined by arbitrary

borders – something to be fought over. But it is specifically about the

inner landscape of soldiers who are sent out to fight or to keep the

peace, far from home.

Gripping photo series transport us to war zones and make the experience

of war palpable. You imagine yourself in the combat boots of ‘our boys’,

but at the same time you are challenged to reflect on the ethical aspects

of the missions. What happens to ‘our boys’? What is really being fought

about? Can you bring democracy? (Do you have a right to?) Or is it all

really about oil, paid for in blood? Will we some day look back on these

missions as we do on the Dutch ‘police actions’ in Indonesia, or the

drama of Vietnam?

Dutch artist and poet Armando wrote that the landscape is guilty, because

it refuses to bear witness. Slowly nature polishes away the damage done

to it. Warzone exposes the inner landscape, in which the damage of

war is not so easily obliterated. Land, on the other hand, shows that the

landscape itself can also be defenceless – a mere plaything for economic

and demographic tides.

Two exhibitions; two vital subjects. Enough reason to make the journey to

the beautiful Frisian countryside again this year.

Sinds het begin van de 21ste eeuw woont meer dan de helft van de wereldbevolking in steden. Dat zijn 3,3 miljard mensen op slechts 3 procent van het aardoppervlak, een gebied kleiner dan Mongolië. Wat zijn de gevolgen van deze verschuiving? Kan het platteland de economische, demografische, culturele en ecologische kaalslagoverleven? Is een menswaardig bestaan mogelijk in de moderne, uit haar voegen barstende megapolis? Het zijn vragen die Noorderlicht de komende twee jaar centraal stelt in haar fotomanifestaties.

Ooit was er de idylle van het platteland. Een leven met de natuur, in

zelfvoorzienende gemeenschappen waar iedereen elkaar groette, en

familiebanden sterk waren. Er werd hard gewerkt, maar het werk gaf

voldoening. En ’s zondags was er de rust en gelijkmatigheid van de kerk en het

kuierbestaan.

Die wereld – ver weg van de onpersoonlijke achtbaan van de urbane 24 uurs

economie – bestaat niet meer. VN-rapporten schetsen een somber beeld, vooral

van het plattelandsleven in de niet-westerse wereld. Er heerst armoede, de

sociale mobiliteit beperkt zich tot die van wegtrekkende jongeren, het platteland

vergrijst. In het Westen valt de terugval in levenstandaard nog mee, maar waar

zou het platteland zijn zonder landbouwsubsidies? Bovendien zien we ook hier

dat het voorzieningenniveau afkalft en dat woonkernen in de regio krimpen.

Land, Country Life in the Urban Age laat zien dat stad en land een symbiotische

relatie hebben ontwikkeld. De stad is het brandpunt van economische en

sociale activiteit, het platteland ondersteunt haar. Met vergaande consequenties.

Landbouw wordt ingericht op grootschalige productie tegen lage kosten,

de groeiende vraag naar landbouwproducten versnelt de kap van tropisch

regenwoud, hele gebieden krijgen een nieuwe bestemming door een toenemende

behoefte aan water, terwijl het intensiveren van productie met moderne (bio)

technieken haar eigen stempel drukt. De groeiende vraag naar biobrandstof

heeft ertoe geleid dat in Brazilië grote delen van de landbouwgrond niet langer

ten dienste staan van het voeden van mensen, maar van auto’s. Tel daarbij op

de voortgaande ontginning van steeds schaarsere natuurlijke hulpbronnen, en

de economische en demografische gevolgen van de trek naar de stad, en het is

duidelijk: de 21ste eeuw stelt het platteland voor serieuze uitdagingen.

Aan de hand van het werk van een dertigtal grotendeels buitenlandse fotografen,

probeert Noorderlicht in de Fotomanifestatie van 2010 een beeld te schetsen

van een platteland in crisis. Van Nadav Kanders reis langs de Yangtze rivier, tot

Rodrigo Zeferino’s kijk op de industrialisatie van het binnenland van Brazilië.

Van Ian Tehs bijna buitenaardse panoramafoto’s van het Chinese achterland, tot

Larisa Sitars spookachtige Roemeense villa’s, gebouwd door migranten die bij

afwezigheid hun plek op de sociale ladder willen bewaken. Van de worstelende

jute-industrie in Bangladesh, tot de kracht die spreekt uit Jackie Nickersons

Zimbabwaanse landarbeiders. Steeds is de vraag: welke rol speelt het platteland

in de hedendaagse, verstedelijkte en globale economie? En is het mogelijk om,

tegen alle economische logica in, het rurale leven een herwaardering te geven?

In 2011 vormt Groningen de locatie van het tweede deel van dit tweeluik:

Metropolis – City Life in the Urban Age.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, over half the world’s population now dwell in cities. That means 3.3 billion people live on only 3% of the earth’s surface. What are the consequences of this shift? Can the countryside survive the economic, demographic, cultural and ecological ravages of this abandonment? Is a decent, humane life possible in the modern megalopolis that is bursting at its seams? These are the questions that Noorderlicht is placing at the heart of its photo festivals for the coming two years.

We like to think of the countryside as idyllic: life in harmony with nature, in

self-reliant communities where everyone knows everyone else and family ties

are strong. Perhaps the work is hard, but it is truly satisfying. And Sundays

there is the rest and regularity of strolling through the village.

That world – far distant from the impersonal roller coaster of the urban 24/7

economy – no longer exists. UN reports sketch a gloomy picture, particularly

for rural life in the non-Western world. Poverty is the norm, social mobility is

limited to the departure of the young, the countryside is ageing. In the West

the decline in rural living standards is not yet that serious, but where would

life in the countryside be without agricultural subsidies? Moreover, here

we can also see how the level of services is crumbling and that population

centres in rural regions are shrinking.

Land, Country Life in the Urban Age shows that the city and countryside

have developed a symbiotic relationship. The city is the focus of economic

and social activity; the country supports it. The consequences are far-

reaching. Agriculture is oriented to large-scale production at minimal cost,

the growing demand for agricultural products accelerates the destruction of

the tropical rain forest, whole regions are allocated new uses as the result of

increasing need for water, while the intensification of production with modern

agricultural and bio-technologies leaves its own marks. Add to that picture

the continuing exploitation of increasingly scarce natural resources, and the

economic and demographic consequences of migration to the cities, and it is

clear: the countryside faces serious challenges in the 21st century.

On the basis of work by about thirty photographers, in its 2010 Photofestival

Noorderlicht sketches a picture of a countryside in crisis. From Nadav

Kander’s journey along the Yangtze River to Rodrigo Zeferino’s look at the

industrialisation of the interior of Brazil, from Ian Teh’s almost extraterrestrial

panoramic photographs of the Chinese hinterland to Larisa Sitar’s series of

Romanian villas, built by migrants who want to guard their place on the social

ladder in their absence, from the struggling industries in Bangladesh to the

strength that emanates from Jackie Nickerson’s Zimbabwean farm workers,

the question is always the same: what role does the countryside play in our

contemporary, urbanised and global economy? And is it possible, against all

economic logic, to give rural life a new value?

In 2011 Groningen will be the location for the second part of this diptych:

Metropolis – City Life in the Urban Age.

In het voorjaar van 2010 reisde de Amerikaanse fotograaf Evan Abramson (1978) door het grensgebied van Kenia en Ethiopië om de gevolgen van klimaatverandering voor semi-nomadische stammen in kaart te brengen. Hij ontdekte dat een grotere frequentie van acute droogtes sterk bijdraagt aan spanningen tussen stammen.

Hoe raakte je geïnteresseerd in juist dit gebied?‘Ik had het een en ander gelezen over de zogeheten ‘wateroorlogen’,

en toen ik de kans kreeg naar Kenia te gaan, besloot ik er aandacht

aan te besteden. In de vallei van de Omo rivier en het gebied rond

het Turkanameer worden stammen haast gedwongen hun buren te

vernietigen om nog aan water en weilanden te komen. De automatische

wapens zijn overal – nog even en deze cultuur en de bijbehorende

kennis gaan voorgoed verloren.’

Jehoortweinigoverditsoortregionaleconflicten. ‘Terwijl het een probleem is dat overal de kop op steekt. Ook in de

VS. Langs de Coloradorivier, in het gehele Zuidwesten, in Californië

en zelfs in Minnesota hebben we conflicten en crises gezien die

voortvloeiden uit een veranderende waterhuishouding. Vaak verergerd

door het bouwen van dammen, mijnindustrie, grootschalige irrigatie, en

andere activiteiten. Er móet meer over gesproken worden. Een festival

als Noorderlicht kan momentum creëren, inspireren en aanzetten tot

reflectie en actie.’

Ben je somber over de toekomst van rurale gebieden?‘De mensheid beweegt in hoog tempo in twee tegengestelde

richtingen. Mensen zijn zich bewuster aan het worden van onze impact

op onze omgeving, maar tegelijk proberen multinationals en overheden

zoveel mogelijk winst bij elkaar te harken. Technologie zal deel van

de oplossing moeten zijn, ook al is ze deel van het probleem. Aan de

ene kant leggen we het land en gewassen onze wil op, maar er is ook

een beweging terug naar de natuur. Daar sluiten zonne-energie en

waterkracht op aan. Technologie maakt het leven comfortabeler, maar

door de perfectie van het urbane model verliezen we een deel van wat

ons mensen maakt: het aanraken van gras of aarde, de smaak van

zout water in plaats van zwembadwater. Ik ben zelf net verhuisd uit

New York, omdat ik het stadsleven moe was. Nu heb ik uitzicht op

de Hudson rivier en de zonsondergang. Dat klinkt ergens toch best

optimistisch, vind je niet?’

Interview with Evan Abramson

In the spring of 2010 the American photographer Evan Abramson travelled through the region along the Kenyan-Ethiopian border to survey the consequences of climate change for the semi-nomadic tribes. He discovered that more frequent acute droughts were fuelling tensions between the different tribes.

Howdidyougetinterestedinthisspecificregion?‘I had read a bit about the so-called “Water Wars”, and when I got

a chance to go to Kenya I decided to focus on the issue. Especially

in the Omo River Valley and Lake Turkana areas tribes are driven

toward annihilation of their neighbours in defence of their own need

for water and pasture. Automatic weapons are already ubiquitous – it’s

just a matter of time before we lose these tribes and their cultures and

knowledge as well.’

You hardly ever hear about this type of regionalconflict.‘Still the problem is present everywhere. Just look at the United

States. The Colorado River, and throughout the American Southwest,

California, even Minnesota: all of these places have experienced

water-based conflicts or crises that have been compounded by human

activities such as dam-building, mining and large-scale irrigation. It has

to be discussed. A festival like Noorderlicht can create momentum,

inspire and move people to reflect on it and act.’

Does the future of rural areas worry you?‘Humanity is rapidly moving in two opposite directions. As awareness

of our devastating impact upon the environment grows, we are also

seeing the multinationals and governments scrambling to reap as many

profits as possible. Technology has got to be part of the solution to the

problems it also creates. On the one hand we impose our will on land

and on crops, on the other hand there is also this increasing movement

to return to the earth. New technologies are reflecting this movement,

such as solar or water-fuelled technologies. Technology leads to a more

comfortable way of living, but as we’re perfecting the urban model we

are also losing touch with what a huge part of being human is: touching

the earth and the grass, the taste of salt water, not pool water. I myself

have just moved out of New York, because I’m tired of city life. Now I

have a view of the Hudson River and the sunset. That sounds a bit like

optimism, doesn’t it?’

Interview met fotografe Eva Gjaltema

De familie van de jonge Nederlandse fotografe Eva Gjaltema (1979) is generaties lang actief geweest in de akkerbouw en veeteelt, in het Westerkwartier, op de grens van de provincies Groningen en Friesland. In Famylje brengt ze aan de hand van eigen beeld en familiefoto’s de verdwijnende levensstijl van haar grootouders in kaart.

Het is een erg persoonlijk project. Maakte dat het werk moeilijker of makkelijker?‘Emotioneel was het soms lastig, maar ik ben er al zes jaar heel bewust

mee bezig. Ik heb altijd interesse gehad in fotografie of kunstprojecten

die dicht bij de maker staan, omdat ze intiemer en eerlijker lijken te zijn.

De feiten over het platteland zijn bekend, maar ik was benieuwd wat voor

gevolgen de feiten hebben op kleine schaal, voor de kwaliteit van leven

en uiteindelijk het verlies van tradities. Door het van dichtbij te hebben

meegemaakt, werd ik me er steeds meer bewust van hoe moeilijk het is

onomkeerbare veranderingen te accepteren. Ik heb het, door het vast te

leggen, een plek willen geven.’

Ben je somber gestemd over de toekomst van het Noord-Nederlandse platteland?‘Het is geen kwestie van somber of positief gestemd zijn. Onze

maatschappij bevindt zich op een tweespoor, denk ik. Enerzijds houden

we ons bijna krampachtig vast aan tradities en lokale geschiedenis,

anderzijds staan we open voor globalisatie en veranderingen die mensen

meer keuzemogelijkheden hebben gegeven. De economische situatie

heeft zich alleen maar verbeterd, maar ik denk wel dat de culturele

diversiteit tussen de verschillende provincies minder zichtbaar wordt.

Jongeren zullen uiteindelijk gaan bepalen welke manier van leven overwint.

Moderniteit en traditie zullen steeds minder van elkaar te onderscheiden

zijn en in elkaar overvloeien. Nu al zie ik niet erg veel verschil meer hoe

jongeren uit Noord-Nederland leven of jongeren in Amsterdam.’

Wat betekent een festival als Noorderlicht voor je?‘Noorderlicht is een ontzettend belangrijke kans voor me. Als beginnend

fotograaf kan ik kennis maken met collega’s uit binnen- en buitenland, en

het is een mooi platform voor mijn project. Het is altijd mijn droom geweest

om Famylje uiteindelijk binnen internationale context, maar toch dicht bij

huis, te kunnen presenteren. Het is fantastisch dat ik dit project zo onder

de aandacht kan brengen van een groter publiek.’

Interview with Eva Gjaltema

The family of the young Dutch photographer Eva Gjaltema (b. 1979) have for generations been active in farming and raising livestock in the Westerkwartier, on the border between the provinces of Groningen and Friesland. In Family (original title in Friesian ‘Famylje’), on the basis of her own images and family photographs she sketches out her grandparents’ disappearing lifestyle.

This is a very personal project. Did that make the work easier,ormoredifficult?Emotionally it was sometimes problematic, but I have been working

on it very deliberately for six years now. I have always had an interest

in photography or art projects that are very personal for their makers,

because they are more intimate, and seem to be more honest.

The facts about the countryside are familiar enough, but I was curious

about what the consequences are on the small scale, for the quality of life,

and ultimately for the loss of traditions. Seeing it at a very personal level,

I became increasingly conscious of how difficult it is to accept irreversible

changes. By recording it, I wanted to give it a place.

Are you pessimistic about the future of the rural areas of the Northern Netherlands? It is not a question of being pessimistic or not. Our society is at a fork in

the road, I think. On the one side we are almost frantically holding onto

traditions and local history; on the other side we are open to globalisation

and changes that give people more possible choices. The economic

situation has only gotten better, but I think that the cultural diversity among

the different provinces will become less visible. Young people will ultimately

be the ones who determine which manner of life wins out. Modernity and

tradition are increasingly hard to distinguish from one another, and have

run over into each other. Already today I don’t see very much difference

any more between how young people live in the north of the Netherlands

and they live in Amsterdam.

What does a festival like Noorderlicht mean for you?Noorderlicht is an extremely important opportunity for me. As a beginning

photographer I can get acquainted with colleagues, both from the

Netherlands and other countries, and it is a wonderful platform for my

project. It has always been my dream to be able to finally present Famylje

in an international context, but still close to home. It is fantastic that I can

bring this project to the attention of a wider audience in this way.

Interview met fotograaf Munem Wasif

Bangladesh is een land met grote problemen en uitdagingen. Overbevolkt en kwetsbaar vanwege terugkerende over-stromingen leeft het aan de frontlinie van sociaal-economische vraagstukken en klimaatverandering. Fotograaf Munem Wasif (1983) werkt exclusief in eigen land, en is met twee series vertegenwoordigd in de manifestatie van 2010. In Blood Splinter of Jute laat hij de gevolgen zien van de teloorgang van de lokale jute-industrie; Stone Workers of Jaflong gaat over arbeiders die, onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden en tegen laag loon, stenen winnen uit de stroom van de Piyain rivier.

Waarom is de invloed van urbanisatie en industrialisatie op het platteland een belangrijk onderwerp voor je?‘Eigenlijk draait alles in Bangladesh om deze ontwikkeling. Elk dorpje

en elke kleine stad wordt er door getroffen. Mensen migreren vanuit

alle uithoeken van Bangladesh naar Dhaka, op zoek naar werk. Er leven

inmiddels al 15 miljoen mensen in de hoofdstad, dus het is moeilijk je

ogen ervoor te sluiten. Je móet er aandacht aan besteden.’

Voor de buitenwereld is Bangladesh een blinde vlek. Ja, het wil nogal eens overstromen, maar het is geen ‘moderne frontlinie’, zoals China of India. Maakt dat het moeilijk interesse voor je werk te wekken in het buitenland?‘Het valt inderdaad niet mee. De nieuwsmarkt noch de kunstmarkt

lopen erg warm voor Bangladesh. Hoe het kan dat mijn werk toch zijn

weg vindt, is moeilijk te zeggen. Ik maak gewoon mijn verhalen, en

daarna probeert mijn agentschap – Agence VU’ – het werk aan de man

te brengen. Dat lukt mondjesmaat. Ik denk dat ik de laatste jaren meer

aan beurzen heb gehad dan aan tijdschriften.’

Waarom is een festival als Noorderlicht belangrijk voor je?‘Ik denk dat zo’n festival een perfect platform is om je werk aan een

internationaal publiek te tonen. Soms creëren dit soort grote festivals

meer aandacht voor je foto’s dan een solo-tentoonstelling in een

galerie. En dus meer mogelijkheden om nieuw werk te maken.’

Ander werk van je is simultaan te zien in de Kunsthal. Toeval, of heb je een speciale band met Nederland?‘Ha, ha. Nee, het is toeval, maar wel een mooi toeval.’

Interview with Munem Wasif

Bangladesh is a country with massive problems and challenges. Overpopulated and vulnerable to recurring floods,itlivesonthefrontlineofsocial-economicissuesand climate change. The photographer Munem Wasif (b. 1983) works exclusively in his own country, and is represented in the 2010 festival with two series. In Blood Splinter of Jute he shows the consequences of the loss of the local jute industry; Stone Workers of Jaflong deals with workers who extract stone from the bed of the Piyain river, under terrible conditions and for low pay.

Whyistheinfluenceofurbanisationandindustrialisation on the countryside an important subject for you?Ultimately everything in Bangladesh revolves around this development.

Every village and every small city is affected by it. People migrate to

Dhaka from all the distant corners of Bangladesh, in search of work.

By now there are already 15 million people living in the capital city, so

it is difficult to shut your eyes to the development. You have got to pay

attention to it.

To the outside world Bangladesh is a blank spot on themap.O.K.,peopleknowtherearefrequentlyfloodsthere, but it is no ‘front line of modernity’ like China or India. Does that make it hard for you to arouse interest in your work in other countries?It is in fact difficult. Neither the news market or the art market have

shown much enthusiasm for Bangladesh. How it happens that my work

still finds its way, is hard to say. I just do my stories, and then my agents

– Agence VU’ – try to get the work around. That succeeds now and

then. I think that in recent years I’ve done better with fairs than with

periodicals.

Why is a festival like Noorderlicht important for you?I think that a festival like this is a perfect platform for showing your work

to an international audience. Sometimes big festivals like this create

more attention for your photos than a solo exhibition in a gallery. Thus

there are more opportunities to do new work.

More of your work is simultaneously being shown in the Kunsthal. Is that chance, or do you have a special connection with the Netherlands?

Ha, ha! No, it is coincidence, but a happy coincidence.

Verdun, Omaha Beach, Hamburger Hill, Srebrenica, Mogadishu, Fallujah. Namen van plekken die verankerd zijn in het collectieve geheugen. Waar het ooit serene landschap veranderde in een slagveld. Waar jonge mannen en vrouwen streden voor geloof, politiek of idealen, hun onschuld verloren, en soms: hun leven.

De begraafplaatsen en geschiedenisboeken herinneren ons er nog aan, maar het slagveld zelf transformeert nadat de strijd is gestaakt. Tijd wist de sporen uit – de puinhopen geruimd, de kraters overwoekerd, de hellingen heroverd door de natuur. Wie ziet nog het verschil met een gewoon strand, een gewone heuvel of een doorsnee-stad?

Maar is het innerlijke landschap van de soldaat net zo veerkrachtig als het landschap waarin hij streed? Hoe verandert iemand die zich wapent voor een leven aan het front? Welke beelden en ervaringen nestelen zich in zijn gedachten? En is het voor hen die de oorlog niet kennen, mogelijk te begrijpen wat het betekent te leven in de verwarrende realiteit van een gewapend conflict?

Warzone staat, aan de hand van werk van topfotografen als Ad van Denderen, Martin Specht, Paul Seawright, Peter van Agtmael en Antonin Kratochvil, stil bij de ervaring van soldaten die in de recente geschiedenis werden uitgezonden naar conflictgebieden. De sporen in het landschap waarin zij leefden zijn door de tijd weer afgedekt. Maar in het innerlijke landschap zal die wereld ten goede en ten kwade blijven bestaan.

Bij Warzone verschijnt een gelijknamige publicatie. Met essays van o.a.

filosoof Hans Achterhuis en oud-minister van Defensie Joris Voorhoeve.

Verdun, Omaha Beach, Hamburger Hill, Srebrenica, Mogadishu, Fallujah: names of places that are lodged deep in our collective memory. Places where the once serene landscape was transformedintoabattlefield,whereyoungmenandwomenfought for their beliefs, politics or ideals, where they lost their innocence, and sometimes their lives.

The cemeteries and history books serve as reminders, but the

battlefields themselves are transformed once more after the battle is

over. Time erases the traces – the rubble is cleared away, the craters

become overgrown, the hills reconquered by nature. Who can still see

the difference from a normal beach, an ordinary hill or an average city?

But is the inner landscape of the soldier as resilient as the landscape

in which he fought? How is someone who has armed himself for life

on the battlefront changed? What images and experiences lodge in his

mind? Is it possible for someone who does not know war to understand

what it it means to live in the confusing reality of an armed conflict?

Through the work of top photographers like Ad van Denderen, Martin

Specht, Paul Seawright, Peter van Agtmael and Antonin Kratochvil,

Warzone pauses to examine the experience of soldiers who have been

dispatched to the Warzones of our recent history. The traces in the

landscapes in which they lived have been covered again by time, but

the world of war will – for better and worse – continue to exist in their

inner landscape.

On Saturday 25 September the book Warzone will be launched. The photo

book contains essays by philosopher Hans Achterhuis and former Secretary

of Defense Joris Voorhoeve. More on page 34.

Turtles Can Fly is de eerste speelfilm die na de val van Saddam

Hoessein op Iraaks grondgebied werd gemaakt. Het verhaal speelt

zich af in een vluchtelingenkamp, vlak voor de inval van Amerika in

Irak in 2003. Er wordt ingezoomd op het dagelijkse leven van de

kinderen in het kamp, waarbij vriendschap en overleven centraal

staan. De film wordt gedragen door niet professionele kind-acteurs.

Turtles Can Fly sleepte verschillende prijzen in de wacht, waaronder de

publieksprijs bij het Filmfestival van Rotterdam.

Crazy 21.00 uur regie: Heddy Honingmann

Crazy is een documentaire van Heddy Honigmann over de betekenis

van muziek voor Nederlandse militairen die onder VN-vlag werden

uitgezonden naar landen als Korea, Cambodja, Rwanda, Libanon en

voormalig Joegoslavië.

Honigmann interviewde de (ex-)militairen thuis over hun ervaringen in

oorlogssituaties, hun angsten en de troost en kracht die zij putten uit het

luisteren naar bepaalde muziek.

Turtles Can Fly is the first feature film to be made on the territory of Iraq

after the fall of Saddam Hussein. The story takes place in a refugee

camp, not long before the American invasion of Iraq in 2003. The film

zooms in on the daily lives of the children in the camp, lives in which

friendship and survival are central issues. The players in the film are

non-professional child actors.

Turtles Can Fly has received various prizes, including the audience prize at

the Rotterdam International Film Festival.

Crazy 9.00 p.m. director: Heddy Honingmann

Crazy is a documentary by Heddy Honigmann, about the meaning

of music for Dutch troops who have dispatched as part of UN

missions to countries like Korea, Cambodia, Rwanda, Lebanon

and the former Yugoslavia.

Honigmann interviewed the soldiers back home about their experience in

war situations, their anxieties and the comfort and strength they drew from

listening to certain music.

Activiteiten EEN BLIK ACHTER DE SCHERMEN

Noorderlicht organiseert samen met het Fries Museum diverse rondleidingen tijdens de manifestatie. De rondleidingen worden gegeven door een deelnemende fotograaf uit de hoofdtentoon-stelling of door een andere expert uit het veld. Gedurende een uur neemt de rondleider u mee langs de tentoonstelling en geeft zijn of haar visie op het werk, de gebruikte technieken of juist de thematiek van de manifestatie.

Zondag 5 september Jeroen Toirkens – Fotograaf LandIn Land is de serie NomadsLife te zien van documentairefotograaf Jeroen Toirkens. Hij volgt al jaren het leven van verschillende nomadische volken in Centraal-Azië, Rusland, Mongolië en de Arctische gebieden. Tijdens zijn rondleiding zal hij onder andere ingaan op zijn ervaringen als fo-tograaf en hoe het is om te werken onder verschillende omstandigheden. Toirkens won in 2009 de eerste prijs van de Zilveren Camera - Buiten-land Documentair met een serie over Tiniteqilaaq in Oost-Groenland.

Zondag 12 september Judith Quax – Fotografe LandJudith Quax toont tijdens de manifestatie een gedeelte uit haar langlopende multimedia-project Immigration Clandestine. Daarin geeft zij beeld van ‘ndeupe’, een animistisch ritueel van het Lebou-volk uit Senegal. Vrouwen dansen daarbij op de maat van opzwepende drums om in contact te komen met de geestenwereld. Veel vissers uit Senegal hebben het leven moeten laten toen ze - op zoek naar een beter bestaan - Europa probeerde te bereiken. Hun vrouwen zijn achtergebleven en gebruiken het ritueel als middel om de leegte te vullen en ongeluk te verdrijven.

Zondag 19 september Eva Gjaltema – Fotografe LandDe familie van de Nederlandse fotografe Eva Gjaltema komt uit het Westerkwartier, een plattelandsgebied op de grens van de provincies Groningen en Friesland, en is generaties lang actief geweest in de ak-kerbouw en veeteelt. In 2004 begon Gjaltema met het vastleggen van het leven van haar grootouders. Om de familiegeschiedenis te bewar-en, maar ook om een uitstervende manier van leven te laten zien. Door gevonden foto’s en ander materiaal te gebruiken, combineert ze de rol van fotograaf met die van verzamelaar, researcher, redacteur en curator.

Zondag 3 oktober Véronique Baar – Kunstadviseur en BemiddelaarKunsthistorica Véronique Baar begeleidt particulieren en bedrijven bij het aankopen en presenteren van hedendaagse kunst. Speciaal ter gelegen-heid van de manifestatie zal Baar ingaan op het verzamelen van foto’s. Wat moet elke beginnende kunstverzamelaar beslist weten? En hoe wordt kunst eigenlijk beoordeeld? In 2007 verscheen haar boek Kunst? Kopen! Deze activiteit is mede tot stand gekomen in samenwerking met My first Art Collection. Aanvang: 15.00 uur.

Zondag 10 oktober: Theo Derksen – Fotograaf, vakdocent en coördinator aan de academie in MaastrichtTheo Derksen heeft in zijn carrière talloze lezingen gegeven over fo-tografie en over de geschiedenis van de fotografie. In zijn rondleiding zal hij aan de hand van het werk uit de tentoonstelling ingaan op welke ‘beeldstrategie’ een fotograaf toepast. Ook zal hij naar de wisselwerking tussen fotograaf en ontvanger kijken: “In hoeverre is de fotograaf verant-woordelijk voor wat de kijker in een bepaald beeld ziet?

Zondag 17 oktober: Reyer Boxem – FotograafDe Groningse fotograaf Reyer Boxem is winnaar van diverse Zilveren Camera-prijzen, meest recent met een fotoserie over de TT in Assen. Hij wordt vertegenwoordigd door Hollandse Hoogte en is als fotograaf voor-namelijk actief in het noorden van het land. Boxem werkt voor bladen als Revu, HP/de Tijd, Trouw, Dagblad van het Noorden, Noorderbreedte, Universiteitskrant Groningen. Zijn rondleiding zal gaan over de demask-ering van het vak fotograaf.

Zondag 24 oktober: Harry Cock – FotograafPortretten, industriële fotografie, architectuur, stillevens, landschappen, het dagelijks wel en wee – het is allemaal terug te vinden in het werk van de Groningse fotograaf Harry Cock. Hij maakt voornamelijk werk in het noorden van het land en toont dit op zowel landelijke als regionale podia. Een van zijn centrale thema’s is hoe de mens zich staande probeert te houden in zijn veranderende omgeving. Wat daarbij opvalt is zijn lichtvo-etige en humoristische invalshoek.

Zondag 31 oktober: Leo Erken – Voorzitter GKf, fotograaf en filmmakerLeo Erken vloog in de jaren negentig regelmatig heen en weer van het dorp Amsterdam naar de stad Moskou om vervolgens met een boemel-treintje richting platteland te gaan. Grotere contrasten waren niet denk-baar. In zijn rondleiding tijdens de Noorderlichttentoonstelling Land zal hij met de bezoekers praten over de contrasten tussen toen en nu.Leo Erken is voorzitter van de beroepsvereniging van fotografen GKf. Hij realiseerde diverse (film)projecten waaronder een documentaire over collega Eva Besnyö voor Het Uur van de Wolf van de NPS.

Sunday, 5 September: Jeroen Toirkens – Photographer in LandThe series NomadsLife by the documentary photographer Jeroen Toirkens is to be seen in Land. For years he has been following the lives of various nomadic peoples in Central Asia, Russia, Mongolia and the Arctic region. Among the topics he will discuss during his tour are his experiences as a photographer and what it is like to work under different circumstances. In 2009 Toirkens won the first prize in the Silver Camera – Foreign Documentary with a series on the Tiniteqilaaq in east Greenland.

Sunday, 12 September: Judith Quax – Photographer in LandDuring the festival Judith Quax is showing a part of her long-term multimedia project Immegration Clandestine. In it she presents a picture of ndeupe, an animistic ritual of the Lebou tribe in Senegal. In this ritual women dance to the ecstatic beat of drums, to enter into contact with the spirit world. Many fishermen from Senegal have met death trying to reach Europe in search of a better life. They leave behind their wives, who use the ritual as a means of filling the void and avert misfortune.

Sunday, 19 September: Eva Gjaltema – Photographer in LandThe family of the Dutch photographer Eva Gjaltema come from the Westerkwartier, a rural area on the border of the provinces Groningen any Friesland, and for generations has been active in farming and raising livestock. In 2004 Gjaltema began to record the lives of her grand-parents, in order to preserve her own family history, but also to capture a dying way of life. By using found photographs and other material, she combines the role of photographer with that of a collector, researcher, editor and curator.

Sunday, 3 October: Véronique Baar – Art advisor and agentArt historian Véronique Baar advises individuals and businesses in the purchase and presentation of contemporary art. Especially for the festival Baar will be looking at photo collecting. What should every beginning art collector definitely know? And how is art actually judged? Her book Kunst? Sunday, 10 October: Theo Derksen – Photographer, photography instructor and coordinator at the academy in Maastricht During his career Theo Derksen has given countless lectures on photo-graphy and photographic history. In his guided tour, on the basis of work in the exhibition he will go into what ‘visual strategy’ a photographer is using. He will also look at the interaction between the photographer and viewer. To what extent is the photographer responsible for what the viewer sees in an image?

Sunday, 17 October: Reyer Boxem – PhotographerThe Groningen photographer Reyer Boxem has won various Silver Camera prizes, most recently with a photo series on the TT in Assen. He is represented by Hollandse Hoogte and as a photographer is primarily active in the northern Netherlands. Boxem works for publications such as Revu, HP/de Tijd, Trouw, Dagblad van het Noorden, Noorderbreedte and Universiteitskrant Groningen. His guided tour will deal with the ‘demasking’ of the professional photographer.

Sunday, 24 October: Harry Cock – PhotographerPortraits, industrial photography, architecture, still-lifes, landscapes, the ups and downs of everyday life: it is all to be found in the work of the Groningen photographer Harry Cock. His photographs are primarily done in the north of the country, and are shown in both regional and national venues. One of his central themes is how people seek to hang on in the face of changing circumstances. Equally striking is his nimble and humorous approach.

Sunday, 31 October: Leo Erken – Chairman, GKf, photographer and filmmakerIn the 1990s Leo Erken regularly flew back and forth from the village of Amsterdam to the city of Moscow to then take a slow train in the direction of the countryside. Greater contrasts were hardly imaginable. In his tour during the Noorderlicht exhibition Land he will talk with the visitors about the contrasts between then and now. Leo Erken is chairman of the Gkf professional photographers’ association. He has realised various photo and film projects including a documentary on his colleague Eva Besnyö for the NPS programme Het Uur van de Wolf.

SatellietprogrammaFriesland heeft een rijke culturele traditie.

Het Noorderlicht Satellietprogramma in de stad en

op het platteland is daar een afspiegeling van. Waar

gewoonlijk een bruisend galerieleven is gekoppeld

aan stedelijke agglomeratie, spelen juist op het

Friese platteland diverse galerieën een dominante

rol. Friesland kent al decennia een aantal zeer

hoogwaardige kunstinstellingen in de kleinere

dorpskernen. Ze hebben allemaal hun eigen gezicht.

Kunsthuis Syb (2000) in Beetsterzwaag biedt hedendaagse kunstenaars een werkplek om zich verder te ontwikkelen door onderzoek en experiment. Vlakbij ligt Kunstruimte Wagemans – een begrip in de Nederlandse galeriewereld. Al jaren toont Wagemans verrassend moderne en hedendaagse kunst van hoog niveau.

Galerie Hoogenbosch (1990) – gehuisvest in een voormalige MULO school in Gorredijk richt zich op authentieke tribale en Aziatische kunst en aan eigentijdse Europese kunst.Het eveneens in Gorredijk gevestigde Smarius/Steven Sterk (2005) behoort tot de top van Nederlandse galerieën en presenteert in een architectonisch pronkjuweel zowel werk van Friese als (inter)nationale kunstenaars.

In het schilderachtige Oranjewoud in Heerenveen ligt Museum Belvédère. Het museum toont 20e-eeuwse en hedendaagse beeldende kunst uit Friesland. Kunsthuis Syb (founded in 2000) in Beetsterzwaag offers contemporary artists a workplace where they can further develop their careers through investigation and experimentation. Nearby is Kunstruimte Wagemans – a name to conjure with in the Dutch gallery world. For years now Wagemans has shown surprising modern and contemporary art at the highest level.

Gallery Hoogenbosch (1990) – located in a former primary school in Gorredijk – focuses on authentic tribal and Asiatic art and contemporary European art. Likewise in Gorredijk, Smarius/Steven Sterk (established in 2005) is among the top Dutch galleries and presents the work of both Frisian and internationally known artists in an architectonic gem.

In the picturesque Oranjewoud in Heerenveen lies Museum Belvédère. The museum shows 20th century and contemporary visual art from Friesland. The accent is on painting that enters into relation with the ambiance of the surrounding landscape. Kunsthuis Syb, BeetsterzwaagLaurence Aëgerter en Ronald van TienhovenTristes tropiques: Illustrations hors texte Laurence Aëgerter en Ronald van Tienhoven werken tijdens hun verblijf in SYB aan een precieze reconstructie van een serie foto’s die in de vorige eeuw in Brazilië is gemaakt door de Franse cultureel antropoloog Claude Lévi-Strauss. De kunstenaars vragen leden van de plaatselijke gemeenschap om als modelde foto’s als in een tableau vivant weer tot leven te brengen.

During their time in SYB Laurence Aëgerter and Ronald van Tienhoven are working on a precise reconstruction of a series of photographs that were made during the 20th century in Brazil by the French cultural anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss. The artists ask members of the local community to be models, in bringing the photographs to life again as tableaux vivants.

Douwe Jan Bakker toont voorstudies van het projectA Vocabulary Sculpture in the Icelandic Landscapeuit 1976/1977. In dit werk onderzoekt hij de relatie tussen vormen in het IJslandse landschap (hellingen, heuveltoppen, waterlopen, lavastollingen) en de klank van de woordenom deze te benoemen. Van Marrigje de Maar is een selectie te zien van interieurs die zij vanaf 2005 in China fotografeert. De selectie is toegespitst op de verschijning van de thermosfles.

Douwe Jan Bakker shows preliminary studies for the project A Vocabulary Sculpture in the Icelandic Landscape, from 1976/1977. In this work he investigated the relation between shapes in the Icelandic landscape (slopes, hilltops, watercourses, congealed lava flows) and the sound of the words used to designate them. Marrigje de Maar is showing a selection of the interiors that she has photographed in China since 2005. The selection concentrates on the presence of the Thermos flask.

Linus Harms exposeerde veelvuldig reis- en documentairefotografie. De laatste jaren richt hij zich steeds meer op het portret. Linus Harms has frequently shown travel and documentary photography. In recent years he has increasingly turned to the portrait. Arend Loerts studeerde aan de Kunstacademie Vredeman de Vries in Leeuwarden en de Fotovakschool in Apeldoorn. Sinds 1975 is hij reclamefotograaf. Daarnaast is hij gastdocent aan de Noordelijke Hogeschool in Leeuwarden. Zijn expositie toont Single Objects, in de breedste zin van het woord.

Arend Loerts studied at the Vredeman de Vries Art Academy in

Leeuwarden and the Fotovakschool in Apeldoorn. He has been an

advertising photographer since 1975. In addition he is a guest lecturer

at the Noordelijke Hogeschool in Leeuwarden. His exhibition shows

Single Objects, in the broadest sense of the term.

Licht, daar gaat het om in het werk van Han Reeder. In de speelse vormen van ijs, maar ook in de nissenvan oude middeleeuwse kerken in Friesland en Groningen. Hier inspireerde het spaarzaam binnenvallende licht hemtot een nieuwe fotoserie: Nissen, vensters en beelden. Meestal zijn het associaties, opgeroepen door restanten religieus, kunsthistorisch en ander cultureel erfgoed.

Han Reeder (photography), Coby Leentjes (objects)

Light: that is what the work of Han Reeder is all about. In the playful

form of ice, but also in the recesses of old mediaeval churches in

Friesland and Groningen. The sparse light entering these sanctuaries

was his inspiration for a new photo series: Niches, windows and

sculptures. Usually these are associations, called up by the remains of

religious, art historical and other cultural heritage.

Sinds 2005 organiseert galerie Art & Job jaarlijks in de kerk van Hornhuizen een fototentoonstelling. Hieruit ontstond het fotografencollectief LuciX. Inmiddels is LuciX voor zo’n twintig fotografen uit de noordelijke provincies een klankbord, inspiratiebron en broedplaats voor gezamenlijke projecten en exposities. Twaalf fotografen tonen hun werk, waarin de toeschouwer het veranderend landschap kan herontdekken.

Since 2005 the gallery Art & Job has organised an annual photo

exhibition in the church at Hornhuizen. The photographers’ collective

LuciX arose from this. Today for about 20 photographers from the

northern provinces LuciX serves as a sounding board, source of

inspiration and spawning ground for joint projects and exhibitions.

Twelve photographers show their work, in which the viewer can

rediscover the changing landscape.

Marijke van Ruiten benaderde schrijvers, journalisten en fotografen en vroeg ze naar hun interpretatie van een foto. Op de expositie zijn zowel deze visies als het persoonlijke verhaal van de fotografe te zien. Naast het geëxposeerde werk bundelde Marijke van Ruiten samen met Gitte Brugman twee fotoseries in de publicatie ‘1-1, Geen rozen zonder doornen’. Deze krant is verkrijgbaar tijdens de Noorderlicht Fotomanifestatie.

Irene Cécile. Als je goed kijkt zitten ze overal – handleiding tot een speelser leven. Met nut, verantwoordelijkheid, ambitie en hard werken is natuurlijk niets mis. Maar soms is het teveel. Heb je geen zin meer, wou je dat alles gewoon wat simpeler was. In ‘Als je goed kijkt zitten ze overal – handleiding tot een speelser leven’ laat Irene Cécile je zien hoe dat moet.

Mijke Bos kwam tijdens haar verblijven in het buitenland in aanraking met verschillende culturen. Nu zoekt ze die dichter bij huis op. Door bewoners te portretteren met historisch Nederlandse hoofddeksels, speelt zij met het thema cultuur en identiteit.

5 Croissanterie Vittorio Joop Gutman, Het geduld van Gutman Gitte Brugman, Landschap

Meer dan vijftig jaar heeft amateurfotograaf Joop Gutman de wereld om zich heen met precisie en geduld bestudeerd en gefotografeerd. Op zijn reizen, in zijn nieuwe vaderland Australië, en terug in Nederland. Uit de landschappen die Gitte Brugman fotografeert, haalt ze elementen die het eerste beeld versterken. Zowel inhoudelijk als in de vormgeving plaatst ze als het ware een uitroepteken.

For more than fifty years the amateur photographer Joop Gutman has

studied and photographed the world around him with precision and

patience, on his travels, in his new fatherland of Australia, and back in The

Netherlands. Gitte Brugman. From the landscapes that she photographs,

Gitte Brugman lifts elements that reinforce the first image. She inserts

exclamation marks, as it were, in terms of both content and design.

10 Historisch Centrum Leeuwarden Wim de Vries, Leeuwarden vanaf het water

De Leeuwarder fotograaf en vormgever Wim de Vries laat plekken zien die vanaf het water een heel ander beeld van Leeuwarden geven. Een beeld dat je alleen ervaart als je met een boot door de stad vaart. Foto’s die soms verbazen, vertederen of aan het denken zetten. Bij de expositie over deze verrassende tocht door de Friese hoofdstad verschijnt een fotoboek bij de Friese Pers Boekerij.

and designer Wim de Vries has photographed places that show a whole

different picture of Leeuwarden from the water, an aspect that you can

only experience if you sail through the city on a boat. His photos are by

turns startling, endearing, or thought-provoking. A book from the Friese

Pers Boekerij about this surprising journey through the capital of Friesland

is appearing to accompany this exhibition.

12 Natuurmuseum FryslânGitte Brugman, Buitenbeentjes in de natuur

Fotojournalist Gitte Brugman maakte in 2008 kennis met de vrijgevochten Norma Miedema. Zij creëerde een bijzondere woonplek, waar ze samenleeft met tientallen verschillende dieren. Norma is een buitenbeentje, maar de spil in haar eigen universum. Er is ook werk te zien van kunstenaars Joris Collier, Elmar Kuiper, Ryszard Bolechowski, Michel Pol en Manon Schmale. Naast het geëxposeerde werk bundelde Gitte Brugman samen met Marijke van Ruiten twee fotoseries in de publicatie ‘1-1, Geen rozen zonder doornen’. Deze krant is verkrijgbaar tijdens de Noorderlicht Fotomanifestatie.

In 2008 the photojournalist Gitte Brugman became acquainted with the

unconventional Norma Miedema. She created a unique dwelling place,

where she lives together with dozens of different animals. Norma is a

maverick, but the axis in her own universe.

There is also work to be seen by the artists Joris Collier, Elmar Kuiper,

Ryszard Bolechowski, Michel Pol and Manon Schmale.

Together with Marijke van Ruiten, Gitte Brugman collected two

photo series in the publication 1-1. This paper is available during the

Noorderlicht Photofestival.

13 Parnas Centrum voor de Kunsten

Drie docenten, drie continentenFrouke Feijen, Denis Markic, Elske RiemersmaFotografiedocenten van Parnas fotografeerden in drie continenten. Frouke Feijen fotografeerde in 2010 in Maleisië, een land met grote verscheidenheid in cultuur en natuur. Kleurrijk en vol contrasten. Denis Markic fotografeerde eind 2009 in Praag. Hij is geïnteresseerd in Europese culturen,met name oude architectuur. Elske Riemersma fotografeerde begin 2010 in Chili. Twintig kilometer van de stad Pucon,onder de rook van de vulkaan Villarrica.

In 2010 Frouke Feijen photographed in Malaysia, a country with a great

variety in culture and nature, colourful and full of contrasts, with modern

urban life next to the villages of the original inhabitants in the jungle.

Denis Markic photographed in Prague late in 2009. He is interested in

European cultures, and particularly old architecture. For the photos he

makes use of the light which suits his subjects best.

Early in 2010 Elske Riemersma photographed in Chile. Twenty kilometres

from the city of Pucon, beneath the fumes from the Villarrica volcano,

lies Ruca Rayen, the ‘house of flowers’. Here Margot, of Mapuche Indian

ancestry, lives with her family.

Speelser kijkenAfgelopen seizoen werkten de leden van de Fotowerkplaats met gastdocent Irene Cécile bekend van haar foto’s en website ‘Als je goed kijkt zitten ze overal’. De fotocursisten maakten speelse, luchtige en toevallige foto’s en ondervonden hoe blij je daar van kunt worden.

De gemeente is van plan de subsidie aan Parnas met ingang van 2013

te beëindigen. Over dit voornemen is in Leeuwarden grote onrust

ontstaan. Parnas heeft een uitstekende reputatie. Het centrum bereikt

wekelijks 3000 cursisten en daarnaast nog eens 10.000 deelnemers

in andere kunstdisciplines. Ook staat het bekend om de innovatieve

aanpak van wijkprogramma’s en community art producties. Het

voornemen van de gemeente om de subsidie te beëindigen komt als

een complete verrassing. Bij Parnas werken 85 kunstenaars en nog eens

30 mensen in de ondersteuning. Parnas is partner van Noorderlicht in

15 De BlokhuispoortMarten Winters, Het Schip De Lading

Stadskunstenaar Marten Winters bouwt op het tweede plein van de voormalige gevangenis de Blokhuispoort samen met de Leeuwarder bevolking een twintig meter lang schip van papier-maché. De lading van dit schip bestaat uit verhalen in woord en beeld van en over stadsbewoners waarbijde volgende vraag centraal staat: wat is voor jullie van ultieme waarde? Speciaal voor Noorderlicht vroeg Winters een aantal Leeuwarder fotografen een visuele boodschap te makenom mee te nemen op zijn reis.

With the help of the people of Leeuwarden the City Artist Marten

Winters is building a 20-metre-long ship of papier-mâché on the second

exercise yard in the former prison, De Blokhuispoort.

The ship’s cargo consists of stories in words and pictures, by and about

the city’s residents, which seek to answer the central question: what is

the ultimate value for you? Especially for Noorderlicht Winters asked a

number of Leeuwarden photographers to make a visual message

to carry along on his trip.

17 VHDGLuuk Wilmering

Gebaseerd op het fenomeen van een historische foto geplaatst op de plek waar die foto ooit is genomen, maakt Luuk Wilmering vier collages die zijn samengesteld uit fotomateriaal afkomstig uit de Leeuwarder Courant. Deze collages worden, na te zijn gescand en geprint op groot formaat, geplaatst bij de locaties die de basis voor de vier beelden vormden.

Voor alle werken geldt dat deze in de openbare ruimte van de stad

Leeuwarden worden geplaatst. Ze worden bepaald aan de hand van de

actuele edities van de Leeuwarder Courant. Via de sites van VHDG en

Noorderlicht worden de locaties bekend gemaakt.

Based on the technique of placing an historic photograph on the site

where it was once taken, Luuk Wilmering made four collages that are

assembled from photographic material from the Leeuwarder Courant.

After being scanned and printed in large format, these collages are

placed near the locations that were the basis for the four images.

All four of these images are being placed in public spaces around

the city of Leeuwarden. The sites are identified on the basis of the

contemporary editions of the Leeuwarder Courant. Information

about the locations can be found on the websites of the VHDG and

Noorderlicht.
