New History Museum Site RevealedThe North Allegheny School District and the Town of McCandless launched a collaborative effort to house the long-time collection of local historian Joseph Bullick. The new museum site, located at 830 Pump House Lane in Wexford, will be designed as a replica of a one-room schoolhouse. The new site is expected to be completed in the spring of 2016. The museum will house hundreds of artifacts pertaining to the NA School District, McCandless Township, and the surrounding communities. The history museum will remain at its current site at McKnight Elemen-tary School until the completion of the project. Interested community members have the opportu-

nity to contribute and become a part of this project. Anyone who wishes to donate to the project will receive an engraved brick to be placed on the “Path-way to the Past” sidewalk leading to the entrance of the museum. For more information, including a link for contributions, click here.

Life in today’s world can be a complex and stress-ful experience for many young adults. This is particularly true for young people who face the challenges of a high-performing school environ-ment. It is not unusual for issues related to anxiety, self-esteem, depression or even self-harming ac-tivities to become a reality for students as a result.

These are not issues easy to talk about – or even admit. But, they are definitely issues that can es-calate into serious concerns without some help or intervention. Statistics reveal a significant percent-age of high school students – many of whom are academic and/or athletic high achievers – struggle to keep those around them from knowing that feelings of stress or sadness or despair are nearly overwhelming them inside.

The North Allegheny Student Assistance Program is sponsoring a seminar this fall to provide help and resources for both students and parents. Guest speakers from Minding Your Mind, a non-profit organization from Ardmore, PA, will present their personal stories. “These stories will move and inspire you, but more importantly they will offer you hope and courage to deal with situations that may be affecting the lives of those in your family,” said Ms. Guinevere Maximo, Supervisor of Special Educa-tion and Pupil Services. “My Department spends a lot of time thinking and tracking ideas for these seminars. I believe this particular evening will be powerful. I hope our parents and our students will turn out to hear this presentation.”

Get a Head Start on Your College Search!Students have two excellent opportunities in the near future to jump start their college search. The North Pittsburgh College Fair is being held on Mon-day, October 6th at La Roche College from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. At this event, students will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from 140 colleges and universities and to learn about campus experiences. This event is being presented in part by the North Allegheny School District, the Northern Area Counselor’s Consortium, and seven other local K-12 school districts.

Students and their families are also invited to attend College Information Night in the NA Senior High School auditorium on Wednesday, October 8th from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Representatives from the University of Notre Dame, Ohio State University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Washington and Jefferson College, and University of Pittsburgh will

be on site to share their knowledge of the college application process for their schools.

At this program, you will hear answers to questions such as:

• How do I choose the right college?

• What should I say in my essay?

• What admission tests do I need to take and what score do I need (ACT/SAT)?

• How do I apply online?

• What classes should I take in high school?

• Whom should I ask to write a letter of recom-mendation?

For more information on College Information Night, please call the NASH School Counseling Office at 724-934-7221 or 724-934-7224.

Super Bowl Champion Darnell Dinkins will be on site as a guest speaker at this hour-long event.

This seminar will assist students in the process of selecting the right college or university for them. 2014 Grad Wins Silver at International Chemistry OlympiadBefore heading off to Stanford Univer-sity to major in materials engineering, NA graduate Derek Wang packed his bag and made a trip to Vietnam!

We reported last May that Derek had achieved a top-20 score in a 3-part na-tional chemistry exam and earned the opportunity to compete for one of only four spots on the U.S.A team that would compete in the 46th International Chemistry Olympiad. Derek attended a

two-week intensive Chemistry Olympiad Study Camp at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado with the other 19 top scoring students. At the conclusion of the camp, Derek was selected for the U.S.A. team that would advance to the international competition where they would com-pete against teams of students from 75 countries. We are very proud to report that Derek earned a Silver Medal for an outstanding performance!

Honors Wind Ensemble Selected for All-State ConferenceThe North Allegheny Senior High School Honors Wind Ensemble, un-der the direction of Mr. Todd Stefan, has been invited to perform at the Pennsylvania Music Educators As-sociation All-State Conference that will be held in Hershey, Pennsylvania in March 2015. The Ensemble will perform for an audience of music educators and administrators from all over the state of Pennsylvania. This is the third consecutive time the ensemble has been selected for their audition since 2009. (Selected bands must wait three years before auditioning for another appearance.)

Receiving this invitation is a tre-mendous honor that only the finest bands from across the state receive. More than 100 groups compete for this invitation to perform by submit-ting recordings that demonstrate various musical genres performed at an extremely high level. A distin-guished group of music educators and professional performers listen to each of the submitted recordings. The selection standards are so high that, if after listening to all of the recordings, the panel does not feel there are any bands worthy of this honor, no band is selected.

Congratulations to the NASH Honors Wind Ensemble and Mr. Todd Stefan for this high honor.
