White Memorial’s Sepsis Challenge:

Reducing sepsis mortality has been a key clinical priority for WMMC and our Adventist Health System. WMMC’s progress in decreasing sepsis mortality: 2008 = 25.9% Q2 2014 = 12.0%

Why We’re Glad to be Here

In conjunction with AH sepsis care project, we have enjoyed

the support from SCPSFC Sepsis Simulation Training:

May 2013- 5 ED staff attended ( 1 Physician Assistant, ED

Educator and 3 staff RNs)

May 2014- 11 staff attended (Charge RNs, Critical Care

Educators, bedside staff RNs and Simulation Center

Coordinator)

Simulation Participation

Page 6: Nora Stuart (White Memorial)

Since the implementation of our current Sepsis/MEWS

alerts in the ED and inpatient setting and modification of

our RRT policy, we have seen a higher number of RRT

calls compare to our code blue calls.

The simulation training helped bedside staff/Charge RNs

identify patients early.

Incorporate the sepsis simulation training learned to our

internal Simulation Center (opened June 2014) by 2015

What We’ve Done

Page 7: Nora Stuart (White Memorial)

1. Change in behavior and practice of Physicians by use of sepsis

order sets in ED and ICU settings. As of now, there’s zero usage of

these order sets. In collaboration with ICU Practice Guidelines

Committee, ICU sepsis order set and protocols will be modified

and updated to current standard/best practice

2. Identification of key opportunities to improve sepsis care by

reviewing sepsis death cases in monthly Sepsis Team meeting

3. Collaboration with Adventist Health Sepsis Community of Practice

every first Wednesdays of the month and Quarterly Physician

Champion meetings

4. Quarterly staff education in collaboration with SCPSFC Sepsis

Simulation Training

What We Will Do
