PRESIDENT’S REPORT Our President’s Dinner and Auction

held on September 15th was a great success.

I want to thank all who donated items for

the auction and all those who attended. A

big thank you goes to our sponsors: Scotia-

bank Bright Futures, Generations Funeral

Home and Southern Alberta Hearing Aid.

We raised a total of $7,000 including a

generous matching donation from the Sco-

tiabank Bright Future Program. This mon-

ey is earmarked for member services. Thanks to everyone who

volunteered, attended, donated items, and bought items at the auc-

tion. We had a great time and I hope all of you did as well.

Our next event will be the Thanksgiving Luncheon on

THURSDAY, October 8th. Please note that we have moved this

event to THURSDAY rather than the customary Friday. The move

was due to other events scheduled at the Centre. Tickets are $12

and are on sale now. Don’t put off your purchase. We expect this

to be another sold out event.

All of our fall programs are now underway and we notice the

increased numbers of members in our Centre. That is a good thing

as we have more volume in the Dunford Diner. It is also good to

see so many of you after the summer and find out what everyone

did with their July and August. Our Board members are also back

after taking a two month summer break. If you have any ideas or

concerns, I ask that you speak to a Board member so we can make

this Center the best around. I will try to be at the Reception Desk

every Friday if you want to talk to me.

Just before publication of this Newsletter we learned that the

Sgt. Wilson Show scheduled for November 2 has been cancelled.

Unfortunately, the tour planners could not obtain insurance for their

North American tour.

Artworks were on dis-play for the months of June, July and August. Gramma has many children who come and do their part

On her fridge held by magnets are the arts of love so grand.

All done by Gramma’s children. Originals done by hand.

They are on the refrigerator

for everyone to see. Like those who visit Gramma who get milk out for their tea.

And others who come to visit

and make themselves at home, sitting at Gramma’s table

viewing future young Van Gogh’s.

Granma loves all her children and they love her in return, by drawing precious paintings,

from school, what they have learned.

As long as Gramma’s living, and the fridge remains in view,

all the drawings will be displayed for friends like me and you.

Coffee Tea and You

Strangers are just friends we haven’t met yet. Do you have trouble going into a room full of people you would love to have coffee with? Wish you had someone to go to coffee with? A lot of us come to Nord-Bridge for exercise, cards, or art, but don’t make that special human connection. Here is your chance to come meet others. Starting October 8th and run-ning every second and fourth Thursday at 10:00 a.m. we will meet in the Dunford Diner. Come join us for a visit and share your stories. See you then! Barb LeClair

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT

Greetings Members; It’s nice to see all of our members back at the Centre, enjoying the Fall Programs. Thanks are ex-tended to all Conveners and Volunteers who are now busy helping Nord-Bridge deliver services, socialization activities, and health and wellness programs. I also welcome all new members who recently joined to participate at “The Friendly Centre”. Finally, I welcome back the University of Lethbridge Nursing Program students who will be here through December (Thursdays & Fridays) to visit with members; learn about, and do re-search on seniors’ matters; and who will organize sessions and an information fair to support our members and the services available in the community. Lethbridge College and Southern Alberta Institute Mas-sage Therapy students will also be here on advertised dates to help with tired muscles and relaxation. Please join me in welcoming our newest building tenant, There-sa Wiberg, of Sandy Toes Foot Care. Theresa is an LPN, who has been working for several years at a major medical clinic in Lethbridge. She has now taken extra training in foot care, to help address some of the issues which can cause difficulty for seniors. Her services should be a good fit for our membership. Please read about these services on Page 3 of this Newsletter. You might want to stop by her nicely fur-nished area, and learn about what she can offer. Over the summer I spent time with Harry Fischer and Norene Easthope of our Seniors Helping Seniors (SHS) Program, to supple-ment my understanding, and that of the Board, on the good works of this service for all seniors, and the community at-large. I am most pleased to report that through August, the SHS Program staffed by dedicated volunteers Harry, Norene, Darlene Crofts, and Joanne Fox together with our wonderful CRA Income Tax Volunteers (too many to name, but all special people) helped this office submit 1,245 tax re-turns for the 2014 year and 99 late returns for the same filing period. Additionally, Harry and his team submitted another 91 prior year tax returns, most of which helped seniors re-qualify for their financial bene-fits. Thus 1,435 total returns have been filed through August. The SHS program also helps seniors and the broader community with consulta-tions and application completion and paper work on programs ranging from Alberta Seniors Benefits (ASB, Special Needs Assistance, Optical and Dental Program Benefits, and Property Tax supports); Old Age Security, CPP, and GIS; AISH to ASB transition, etc. Our volunteers are also well versed on referrals to other agencies and services. Some 809 such consultations have been provided to date. I congratulate this team, and encourage you to seek them out if you need help.

Respectfully, Randy Smith

Programmer’s Report by

From the Desk of Val What a splendid time of year with

all the earthy, autumn colours sur-rounding us. Apple anyone?

Mystery Trip #6 took us for a fall picnic outing to Park Lake. It was a glorious day; a superb outing with no wind! Those who have not taken in any Mystery Trips have really missed out. You need to be really quick. Already # 7 and # 8 are sold out. By the time 2015 ends, we will have completed 10 great mystery trips. Everyone loves going some-where mysterious, an unknown destination.

At the Reception Desk, we have been busy welcoming new members. Thank-you to those early birds who have renewed their memberships for 2016. About your photos: I have found a member photographer, Sid Lewis, who will take photos. Please refer to Page 11 of this Newsletter for Sid’s photo session schedule for October. Most programs are up and running including our Outreach super seniors Program and I would like to welcome three new volunteers; Susan Faust, Christina Craig and Melanie Hanam. Our gift Boutique is in need of volunteers. If you are interested, please leave your name with us and we will forward your contact information to Heather Newsham who manages the Boutique. I will be away from my desk for rest and relaxa-tion but I shall return on Monday, October 5

th.

Until then, to-da-loo, My Pretty! Valerie

Autumn is not just a time to rake leaves and clean up the yard, it is also a time to start honing the skills of all the Fall In-House tournament activities. Participants of Carpet Bowling, Floor Curling, Darts, Snooker, Table Shuffleboard and Floor Shuffleboard can sign up for the annual friendly Fall Tourna-ments starting this month. The cost is $15 and includes a spe-cial meal at the Tournament conclusion in early 2016. Please check with the conveners of each activity to pay and register. The U of L Nursing students have commenced their annu-al fall health promotion and education sessions here at Nord-Bridge. The students invest a lot of time researching and pre-senting on various health related topics for older adults. It would be greatly appreciated if our membership would support and attend their presentations. The Federal election is coming up this month and Nord-Bridge is an Advance Polling station on October 9 - 12th. We will also be a polling station for 8 polls on Election Day, October 19th. Program room changes and cancellations are as follows: On Friday, October 9th Chair Yoga will be moved to the Multi-Purpose Hall. Carpet Bowling will be cancelled that day. Bridge will be moved to the South View Meeting Room and the Nurs-ing students will move to the Board Room. On Monday, Octo-ber 19th Floor Curling and Darts will be cancelled to accommo-date the Federal Election. Floor Curling participants have requested that program time on Mondays remain at 10:00 am. Please be sure to adjust your schedules as Monday start times will be 10:00 am and Thursday start times will be 9:00 am.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES by Eva Deringer

The President’s Dinner & Auction was enjoyed by 100+ guests on Sept. 15. A variety of items were silently bid on followed by an animated live auction by the always entertain-ing auctioneers Dean Oseen and Dick Indenbosch. The cash bar, roast beef dinner and the most entertain-ing “Tom & Curt” were enjoyed by all. We owe many thanks to our sponsors Scotiabank Bright Future Program, Christenson Salmon Generations, Southern Alberta Hearing Aid, and all of our donors and volunteers for their efforts in making this a successful event. The 50/50 winners of $58.00 each were: Sherie Hunt, Judy Workman and Arlene Robertson. Our next function is the “Thanksgiving Luncheon” on THURSDAY OCT. 8. We have moved this event from the usual Friday slot due to pre-voting scheduled here in the Centre.

SEPTEMBER OUTREACH SETS THE TONE FOR 2015-2016 September 21 marked the beginning of another year of monthly Outreach events as we presented “Round Up Time”. Seven care homes and lodges were represented with 61 guests along with 43 Nord-Bridge guests and 21 volun-teers for total attendance of 125. The Classic Legends pro-vided musical entertainment and a light snack was enjoyed by all. Audrey MacDonald was the lucky door prize winner. Special thanks is extended to Ash Adams and Bud Hodgson who served as our MC’s. Thanks also to our faith-ful volunteers. Outreach requires significant planning and organizing, as well as hard work. Most of this work is done by volunteers. Added to our Outreach roster are new volun-teers Susan Faust, Christina Craig and Melanie Hanam. Their additional help is greatly appreciated by the Commit-tee. As its name implies, Outreach extends out beyond our membership to our greater super senior community with an invitation for others to enjoy an afternoon outing for enter-tainment and socialization. Outreach is a hugely successful program and a prime example of our “friendly Centre” cul-ture. Everyone is invited to our next event on Monday, Octo-

ber 26th, as we celebrate Halloween.

S eptember 10

th was a beauti-

ful, sunny day as our group of 50 boarded the Carefree Ex-

press luxury bus heading to our first stop, Lundbreck Falls. From there we hit the Cowboy Trail (Rt 22) for a scenic ride through Alberta ranch country. At our destination, the Bar-U-Ranch National Historic

Site in Longview, we were greeted by our guides for a walking tour or a horse drawn carriage ride, strolling along old paths and old buildings, learning the Ranch’s history. For me the highlight was enjoying hot coffee made the old fashioned way; by a cowboy on an open pit camp fire. It reminded me of my Girl Guide camping adventure days.
