C40 CITY SOLUTIONS PLATFORM

C40 Cities and CLEAN have developed the City Solutions Platform (CSP) to support early engagement between cities and climate solution providers to accelerate the
development and implementation of innovative and scalable climate solutions.
By providing cities and solution providers a non-commercial space for working together on cities’ most
urgent climate challenges at an earlier stage than usual, the CSP ensures a common understanding of the
challenges in order to co-create implementable solutions and work towards the same goals.

The CSP has successfully run an innovation process in 12 cities; Addis Ababa, Athens, Copenhagen, Helsinki,
Melbourne, Milan, Rio de Janeiro, Seattle, Sao Paulo, Stockholm, Sydney and Tel Aviv, engaging over 600
international solution providers to co-create solutions for challenges including flood management, urban heat
island effect, renewable energy, waste management and mobility.

FAST FACTS ON THE CHALLENGE Between 2005 and 2014, Athens experienced 32
days per year with daily maximum temperature over
35ºC For every 1ºC temperature increase in Athens there
has been a: 5.2% increase in mortality rates
between 2000—2012; 6% increase in smog;
10% drop in sales; 4.1% increase in the use of electricity in the city

FAST FACTS ON THE CHALLENGE The City of Sydney is proposing a new target for their
local government area to be net-zero by 2050 building on existing targets to reduce 2006 emissions by 70% by 2030.
50% of electricity used in the local government area
is targeted to be from renewable sources by 2030. The challenge is to determine the most effective way
to invest time and money to achieve the best outcomes. Specifically, how to create as much renewable energy as possible, within the earliest time frame, locally where possible, and to be directly attributed to the City’s businesses and residents.
