Jessie’s JourneyBy Dave ScottOver the years, Monica and I have had the opportunity to work with oh so many great kids and leaders at our NYCA Summer Camp… and as the years go by, you try to keep in touch with the leaders as they grow up, but they go off, do their thing and the next time you see them they are all grown up!Jessie VandenBussche is one of those great leaders; her bright, friendly smile has welcomed kids to camp for many years. The quality I most admire in Jessie is her positive outlook. I have watched her work her magic at camp with kids; helping everyone have fun and feel good about themselves. Her energy would simply entwine those around her and soon everyone was participating, having a great time.A few months ago Jessie told me she was going to bike across Canada to raise awareness and funds for the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA).I was impressed that Jessie was ready to take on such a huge challenge. Knowing her over the years I was not surprised… but none the less I was worried, even though I knew Jessie would put in the training and do all the right things to prepare herself… her dedication and drive would be her fuel. I could see the change in Jessie, sure she was still the same camp leader, but I recognized the maturing of a person who saw her own strength and conviction, who is now understanding the essence of her being. The realization of helping others and educating folks about mental health has become as much of a journey as the bike ride itself.Jessie truly believes the studies that state physical fitness can help folks battling mental illness. Getting out and getting active is being recognized as an essential and accessible part of a treatment plan, hence the name, Strong, Happy & Free Across Canada. She tells me that there have been points in her life, where she has needed to consciously search for good in the world, bouncing back from her depressive symptoms stronger and more passionate than

ever before.Being the smart young lady that she is, she realized that if this could happen to her, it could happen to others. One in five Canadians will face mental health issues in their lifetime, which brings us to the vision and mission of the Canadian Mental Health Association. CMHA Vision: Mentally healthy people in a healthy society. CMHA Mission: As the nation-wide leader and champion for mental health, CMHA facilitates access to the resources people require to maintain and improve mental health and community integration, build resilience, and support recovery from mental illness. The ride begins in mid June on the East Coast and Jessie plans on going as far west as she can with the resources she has at her disposal. Her goal is to finish at Beaver Creek in late summer. If you would like to donate or get involved with the ride please contact Jessie through her website, www.strongfreehappy.ca.Jessie, I want you to know that Monica and I are both proud of you and all that you are accomplishing… you have become a leader and a role model for many to follow… keep smiling!“Jessica VandenBussche initiated the Strong Free and Happy Across Canada tour in response to her personal experiences and formal education. Through residence experiences at university, conversations with fellow instructors at the Ontario Police College, and humanitarian work in Ukraine, Jessica has gained both a passion and understanding of the importance of mental health. Her own experiences with depressive symptoms, and the difficulties associated with finding/accessing treatment have inspired her to take action for those who have, are, will or could meet mental health challenges of their own. After learning of the benefits of exercise on the brain in her BSc Kinesiology studies, Jessica has naturally combined her passions into an experience of hope, mountains, bugs, empowerment, cold, wind, strength, joy and connection to be shared by many.”

Jessie is cycling across Canada to promote physical activity as means to mental health; to unite communities in sustainable

physical activity; and to raise funds for the Canadian Mental Health Association.

By Dave ScottIt is not very often we get the opportunity to sit and chat with one of Canada’s elite female marathon runners, but last week Krista DuChene stopped into Port Dover to talk to a group from the North Shore Runners.Krista, who lives in Brantford with her husband and three kids is that one of a kind person who has the drive and desire to be the best she can be.If you have never run a marathon, you may not understand the time, the energy, the focus, and the sacrifice that is needed to train and compete at any level. You give more than you get, and sometimes more than you bargained for mentally and physically.Long, lonely hours spent training in the dead of winter or in the sweltering heat of summer is nothing new to Krista.

She has but one goal, that is to represent Canada at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Krista has plotted her course and this August will be competing in Moscow at the World Champions. If all goes as planned Krista, will make the Canadian qualifying time for the Olympics. Funny story, she has already made the Olympic qualifying time when she ran last year at a marathon in Rotterdam. To make it to Rio though, she still has to make the Canadian qualifying time… crazy eh!Talking with Krista, you feel she has a strong sense of faith; that her vision of what she hopes to accomplish is set and defined clearly in her life at this point. Her young family, known as Team DuChene, comes first. Everyone chips in to help make Krista’s dream a reality. I enjoyed listening to Krista talk about her children (her youngest being just over two). It was easy to see her family helps keep her balanced.Krista ran in high school but was a hockey player first. She never really took running

too seriously, her drive being hockey. When she attended Guelph University, she took up cross-country running and was very good. Unfortunately, illness in her family took precedence and she stepped away from running for a while. It wasn’t until 2002 that she decided to do a marathon, one lead to another, and faster times just kept coming. Eleven years and three children later, Krista is now the premier female marathoner this country has!Krista shared a typical day in her life with us, which works around her family and a three-hour workout. This mom is up to the task and loves all aspects of her busy day. We are very lucky to have such a world-class athlete in our area. Having an opportunity to listen to her speak provided us with a little insight as to what it takes to be the best you can be… not just the physical part, but the mental toughness as well… of finding that point of excellence.Good luck Krista, we are all rooting for you!

Big SplaSh Of The Week!

Birdies were flying wild at the Simcoe Composite School gymnasium last Wednesday as the local public schools held their badminton tournament. There were singles male/female, doubles male/female as well as mixed doubles. Congratulations to all the participants from all the schools and to the many volunteers who organized such a great day!

Your old eyeglasses might not be much good to you but thousands of others are helped with one of the original recycling projects.Simcoe Lions have been keeping thousands of glasses from the junk pile with an ongoing project that sees them get some extra use. A handful of Lions get together several times a year to sort through the local donations and prepare them for distribution to optometry schools and reclamation centres.“It’s a hands-on benefit for the bigger community,” said Simcoe Lion Fred Kent as he helped reduce a mountain of old spectacles. “I enjoy doing it.”Simcoe Lions began collecting eyeglasses soon after the club’s

existence began in 1931.“If you have ever lost your sight and eventually get it back,” said Lion Rick VanDamme, who lost his sight for several weeks in 1978 in a home incident, “You really appreciate the gift of sight and being able to see.“If we can help even one person see better by reclaiming the used eyeglasses, it’s worth it.”There are 11 donation boxes around Simcoe including pharmacies, optometric offices and the CNIB Centre at Hazel Place.A film presentation later this month will help people understand more about vision loss.Simcoe Lions are helping the CNIB publicize Vision Health Month with a free showing of filmmaker James Lovett’s documentary Going Blind.CNIB has been involved with a month-long campaign to educate

Canadians about vision health and the importance of eye care. The Simcoe Lions, one of 14,000 service clubs under the Lions International umbrella, chose eyesight as a centrepiece of their volunteerism since Helen Keller challenged the group to be ‘Knights of the Blind’, nearly 90 years ago.Lovett’s documentary aims to make people aware of what it means to experience sight loss from both emotional and medical standpoints. Lovett, who learned he had glaucoma and was losing his sight, turned the camera lens on himself to chronicle his journey to darkness. The former producer of ABC News 20/20 and other programs, weaves his own mission to slow down the disease through medication and surgeries, with the stories of others, including an Iraqi War veteran and an art teacher

looking for new ways to present her craft. The film presentation is free and will be held Tuesday, May 28, at 7 pm, at Simcoe Composite School auditorium. The evening will include door prizes and refreshments.Helen Keller changed the course of Lions history when she spoke at a club convention in Cedar Point, Ohio in 1925“Will you not constitute yourselves Knights of the Blind in this crusade against darkness?” she asked. “Will you not help me hasten the day when there shall be no preventable blindness; no little deaf, blind child untaught; no blind man or woman unaided?”Keller later returned to a Lions convention and thanked Lions for taking the challenge.

On Saturday, June 8, 2013 the Lynedoch Community Group will be hosting their 16th Annual Garden Tour. Founded in 1812, Lynedoch is a beautiful village built along the banks of Big Creek in Norfolk County. It is home to many century and newer homes with large manicured treed lots and beautiful gardens. This year’s tour will feature eight gardens and due to the success of the cemetery tour last year, we are providing two separate tours this year as well. Details will be available at the ticket booth located in the country market square,

beside the Lynedoch United Church. Opening ceremonies begin at 11 am in the market square. Expect a day of viewing beautiful gardens plus a variety of other activities. A variety of local vendors will be displaying and selling their wares – everything from ironworks to crafts, jewellery, rock art, books and garden flags. Join us for a barbeque lunch and take in the local entertainment with a “Musicale under the tent”! This year, Kolton Stewart will be included in our local entertainers, performing throughout the day. The Norfolk County Quilters

Guild will be displaying eight to ten beautiful quilts inside the church. We will have a weaver in the courtyard, a historical display of Lynedoch’s history and a woodworking artist in one of the gardens. Arts and Antiques will be displayed at the Lynedoch Lyceum, situated beside the market square.Don’t forget to top the day off with the strawberry social – provided by the Lynedoch United Church Women. Garden Tour tickets are $8 in advance or $10 per person on the day of the event. Lunch and strawberry social are separate costs. For tickets in advance please

A new play featuring characters from the most successful show in Lighthouse Festival Theatre’s history is set to open the theatre’s 2013 summer season. In 2009, audiences flooded the box office for tickets to see the on-stage antics of Henry and Alice Lane as the long-married couple struggled to reignite the spark in their relationship in Sexy Laundry by Michele Riml. Artistic Director Derek Ritschel has reassembled almost the entire creative team from that record-setting hit to mount Riml’s follow-up comedy Henry & Alice: Into the Wild, which follows the lovably awkward couple on a wayward camping trip. Returning for the semi-sequel is Director Walter Learning, star Melodee Finlay, and set/

costume designer Bill Chesney. Joining them are co-stars Jamie Williams – well known to Lighthouse audiences for his performances in Skin Flick and The Melville Boys – and Susan Greenfield, who is making her Lighthouse debut as Alice’s free-spirited and obnoxiously boundary-less sister Diana. Lighting Designer Wendy Greenwood rounds out the creative team tasked with kicking off the 2013 season. Artistic Director Ritschel assures audiences that Into the Wild is not a sequel in the sense that it picks up where Sexy Laundry left off. “It’s a new story using familiar characters,” Ritschel explained. “It occurs within the universe that we created in Sexy Laundry, but you don’t have to have seen – or remember – the first play to

enjoy this production. The themes are universal, and the laughs come fast and furious. There are some little bonuses for the hardcore Michele Riml fans that saw Sexy Laundry three or four times when we had it here, but overall this is going to be a hilarious play and a great night out for everyone who comes to see the show,” he added. Henry & Alice: Into the Wild opens in previews May 22 before officially opening May 23 and playing through June 8. Tickets are on-sale now. Call the box office at (519) 583-2221 or 1-888-779-7703, or order online at lighthousetheatre.com. Lighthouse Theatre is a professional theatre company, and a registered not-for-profit, charitable organization.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grand Erie and the Paris Port Dover Pipe Band would like to take a moment and thank Scotiabank for once again this year playing a BIG role in our success at the 2013 Big Pipe Dream fundraising gala. The 3rd annual joint fundraiser, dubbed a “Plaid Tie Affair” was held April 13th at the beautiful Brantford Golf and Country Club. This week, Elaine Bessie officially presented the two non-profit agencies with a cheque for $7,625.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grand Erie believes in mentoring children through friendship: our goal is to build life-changing relationships that inspire and empower children and youth to reach their full potential as individuals and local citizens. In 2012 we served 433 children in our community and are on pace to surpass that this year. The Paris Port Dover Pipe Band believes in mentoring children through music: their goal is to provide young people of any skill level with instruction in Scottish music and give

them opportunities to play with the band and act as ambassadors on the local, national and international stage. They currently have 25 youth members. Thank you again to Elaine Bessie and her staff at the West Brant location, was well as the Lynden Road, downtown Brantford, and Simcoe branches for their support in selling tickets. Because of you over 450 children are getting the opportunity to grow their confidence and reach their full potential.

Norfolk General Hospital has provided digital radiography examinations since the hospital upgraded its equipment in 2009. This means that women having their screening done at NGH can rest assured they are receiving the most recently recommended standard of care. A study by Cancer Care Ontario published this week found that digital radiography and screen film technologies are significantly more effective than computed radiography at detecting breast cancer. “Patients who have had mammography exams at NGH should not be worried about the results of the recent Cancer Care Ontario Study”, said Kelly Isfan, NGH CEO. NGH has also achieved Canadian Association of Radiology mammography accreditation, which means it maintains the highest standards of diagnostic technology. NGH has been a member of the Ontario Breast Screening Program since 2001. The hospital provides approximately 2000 OBSP screening exams per year in addition to 1200 non-OBSP mammograms.

By MARG WERDEN Eating on the fly is becoming harderIn what seems to be an endless flying dance through the air over our backyard, dozens of Tree Swallows are busy keeping the insect population down to a manageable level, something I greatly appreciate. Aerial insectivores. That’s the official term for those agile flyers that manage to grab their grub out of the air. This group of birds includes members of the Swallow, Nighthawk, Nightjar, Swift and Flycatcher families. When we first moved here, we installed numerous Bluebird/Tree Swallow nesting boxes and although many of them are inhabited by House Sparrows each year, there are always quite a few that both Tree Swallows and Bluebirds have laid claim to. A few years ago we also put up a Purple Martin apartment house, but so far haven’t had much luck in attracting any tenants. This year, for the first time, I actually saw a pair checking out the boxes, but I don’t think they have yet signed a lease. Unfortunately, some of the neighbours (Starlings and Sparrows) may have driven them

away. It seems to be a never-ending battle to keep those birds out of the Martin house. We keep hoping, however, that one year soon we will see the Martins win the fight. For a few years after we moved here we had a pair of Barn Swallows nesting on the front porch. Despite the fact that they made quite a mess, it was fun to see the young ones grow and to try to avoid being dive-bombed by the anxious parents every time we walked by the nest. We learned early on, however, to keep the front door closed as the inquisitive young would eventually fly into the house to see what was in there!Unfortunately, the numbers of Barn Swallows and other aerial insectivores is declining and some of these species are now on the list of birds of special concern. The declines are alarming because some populations have fallen by over 70 per cent over the last few decades. On this continent, the most severe declines seem to be taking place in the north and east, but it is actually a global phenomenon, with birds that make long-distance migrations showing a larger decline than birds that do not migrate as far.Dutch researchers believe that climate change is affecting the population of some flycatchers that winter in West Africa and breed in Europe. Higher spring temperatures in Europe have

resulted in earlier “peak” dates for some insects that are the main food source for these birds during their nesting season. Although the birds have responded by beginning their migration earlier, there are hazards associated with this as they may be exposed to colder temperatures and lower food availability if the weather suddenly turns cold.Another study conducted in Scotland looked at the effect sewage treatment plants may have on aerial insectivores. Sewage waste contains endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) that enter the waste from a number of sources including pharmaceuticals such as contraceptive pills and other hormone treatments. Because sewage treatment plants are usually home to a number of flying insects, the EDCs make their way into the birds through their food, affecting their neural and immune functions and causing egg thinning.Another factor that may be contributing to the population declines is the loss of nesting sites. Loss of artificial nesting places such as open chimneys, wooden barns and gravel rooftops can be linked to the decline of Swifts, Barn Swallows and Nighthawks. However, if this was the only contributing factor, then Purple Martins and Tree Swallows should be exempt from the decline because of the number of nesting boxes that people have

installed. Unfortunately, this is not the case and other species such as Flycatchers and Whip-poor-wills, who do not rely on artificial structures, are also on the decline. The one common feature that all of these species share is their reliance on flying insects as a food source. There is growing concern that aerial insects are also declining, something that may also account for the declining bat population. There are many explanations for changes in insect populations including light pollution, changing aquatic conditions, and changes in climate. One of the most obvious factors that can affect insect populations is the widespread use of pesticides in the agricultural industry. While it’s hard to know where to start to reverse the population declines, there are some things we can do. Most important, eliminate the use of pesticides in your lawn and garden. You can also provide nesting cavities, either artificial or by leaving dead trees standing. In addition, Bird Studies Canada has a number of citizen scientists programs that allow you to help monitor the population trends of many of these aerial insectivores. Check out their website at www.bsc-eoc.org.

Populations of aerial insectivores such as the Tree Swallow are declining as their main food source, flying insects, also decline in numbers, likely a result of heavy pesticide use in the agricultural industry.
