BackgroundRF Neighbor Electronics, China provides professional technical support to customers across Asia including microwave components, amplifier design, application and production, and all the related electronic components such as power transistors, RF transformers, ferrite devices, cables, resistors, capacitors, etc. They were in need of a highly innovative product – a multiple band PLL LNB that allowed frequency changes as required. ChallengesApplications like maritime, newsgathering and remote mobile communications require flexible and dynamic microwave components to support satellite equipment. With increasing globalization and rising mobility, organizations dispatch teams to multiple locations that need to use specialized, quick-deploying satcom systems that can operate in multiple bands. RF Neighbor Electronics and its clients were faced with the challenging demand of installing Low Noise Block Downconverters (LNBs) that could operate in at least five bands, so that their satellite systems could work all over the world, rather than carry around and install separate components, antennas and terminals every time they visit a different region. Norsat met this demand by supplying the innovative 9100HI5N-4 Ka-band PLL LNBs. They offer five separate sub-bands for the utmost in frequency flexibility with improved LO stability allowing users to reliably receive a narrower band transmission from Ka-band satellite networks.

SolutionThe 5-Band Ka LNB is an exclusive product from Norsat. It allows selection from any available Ka frequency from 17.2 to 22.2 GHz, in a single package. Band selection is made by applying 13V, 18V or 22V power and 22 kHz on or off. Norsat also provided them with an upgraded multi-band LNB controller, the ULC-2S-50-810025 that controlled the voltage and tone provided to the LNB, through a rotatory switch to select one of the five available bands. This completed the system to provide a truly comprehensive multi-band LNB solution. Besides being satisfied with the specs, RF Neighbor Electronics was impressed with Norsat’s turnaround time and ability to customize fast. They were also impressed with Norsat’s customer service team and LNBs purchased in other bands like Ka, Ku and X-band.
