Multiplier, who pressed the pace of Go Around to give trainer Chad Brown a one-two finish in the race. Trainer Graham Motion saddled the third- and fourth-place finishers, Can’thelpbelieving and Up With the Birds. Closing Bell, Kaigun, Morandi, Go Around, and Biz the Nurse complete the order of finish.

The win was the first in three tries in this country for Wake Forest, who was a multi-ple Group 3 stakes winner in Germany. He finished sixth in the Arlington Million last August.

In his first start after the Million, Wake Forest was beaten a head by Kaigun in the Grade 2 Pan American at Gulfstream. He came with a strong late run that day, too, but the 1 1/2 miles might have been a tad too far.

“It certainly helped getting a race under his belt,” Brown said. “Running such a hard race off the layoff and then having six weeks helped. The whole thing came

together nicely.”Wake Forest didn’t break sharply in the

Man o’ War and was eighth of nine runners for the opening mile. But Velazquez was able to save all the ground along the rail.

Go Around set the fractions, but Money Multiplier was just off his flank through a mile in 1:38.22.

Wake Forest came to the eighth pole in fifth, before getting to the outside and powering home. He ran his last quarter-mile in less than 23 seconds and covered the 1 3/8 miles over firm turf in 2:01.55. He returned $6.30 as the favorite.

“He has some kick,” Velazquez said. “That’s why I didn’t panic. I know he can kick. I was waiting for the seam.”

Brown, who has a plethora of talented turf males, including defending male turf champion Big Blue Kitten and defending Manhattan winner Slumber, said Wake Forest would be considered for the Grade 1 Manhattan at 1 1/4 miles on Belmont

Stakes Day.“I think he can cut back even further in

the Manhattan,” Brown said. “I’ll see what group of horses that I would point toward there out of my stable but this hose would be at the of my list.”

Cavorting dispelled any notion that her best days are behind her or that she’s distance-challenged when she scored a dominant five-length victory in the Grade 2, $250,000 Ruffian Stakes at Belmont Park on May 14.

Despite breaking from the rail under new rider Javier Castellano, Cavorting worked out an outside stalking trip, blew past the even-money favorite Carrumba approach-ing the quarter pole, and cruised home a sharp winner of the one-turn mile race for fillies and mares.

Carrumba, who stalked the pace-setting Calamity Kate for a half-mile, finished second by 2 1/4 lengths over Spelling Again. Calamity Kate, who broke through the gate before the start and then set the early pace, was fourth, followed by Include Betty and Welcome Abroad.

Cavorting, a daughter of Bernardini owned by Stonestreet Stables, won for the first time since she took the Grade 2 Prior-ess at Saratoga last August. In winning for the first time from three starts at a mile, Cavorting improved her record to six wins from 11 starts and surpassed the million-dollar mark in earnings with $1,128,000.

“I didn’t see this race coming, but I liked it,” winning trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said.

Cavorting was coming off a runner-up finish to Paulassilverlining in the Grade 3 Distaff at Aqueduct on April 17. McLaugh-lin said some members of the Stonestreet camp were not pleased with jockey Irad Ortiz’s ride in that race and asked McLaughlin to make a change.

McLaughlin tabbed Castellano, the three-time Eclipse Award winner, who gave more evidence as to why he’s been so honored.

Castellano did a super job getting Cavort-ing from the rail to the outside of the speed horses, tracking Calamity Kate and Carrumba through a quarter-mile in 23.75 seconds and a half-mile in 47.05.

“Everybody separated a little bit and I was able to put her in a better spot in the race,” Castellano said. “The horse to beat was Carrumba and she was my target all the way in the race.”

At least until the quarter pole when Cavorting took control and then ran a final quarter in 23.35 seconds to complete a mile in 1:34.05. She returned $7.80 as the second choice.

“He rode her perfect,” McLaughlin said. “That way she’s going to be able to get a mile or a mile plus. That was the key, sitting back and making a run and that’s what she did.”

Cavorting will be pointed to the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps on the June 11 Belmont Stakes card. In the Phipps, Cavorting will likely face Carrumba, who was simply second best this day.

“I thought she looked comfortable going down the backside, the winner just freaked today,” said Shug McGaughey, trainer of Carrumba. “They ran fast.”

Unified did what he was expected to do in the Grade 2, $200,000 Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park on May 14 – win. The ques-tion now is did he do enough to convince his connections to take a swing in the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes in four weeks?

Showing the ability to sit off horses, Unified took a narrow advantage three furlongs from home, widened his lead in midstretch, and then had enough to hold off Governor Malibu and win the Peter Pan by three-quarters of a length.

The victory kept Unified unbeaten in three starts, adding to his earlier scores in the Grade 3 Bay Shore at Aqueduct and a maiden race at Gulfstream Park. Though the Peter Pan is the local prep for the Belmont Stakes, Jimmy Jerkens, Unified’s trainer, wasn’t enthusiastic about running the colt 1 1/2 miles at this time. But he didn’t rule it out.

“You got to be an idiot nowadays to rule anything out because things change over-night in this business with the horses,” Jerkens said. “It’s improbable, but not impossible.”

Obviously, the results of the May 21 Preakness Stakes – where Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist will seek to make another step toward the Triple Crown – will play a factor in that decision.

For now, Jerkens and the Centennial Farms syndicate that owns Unified will enjoy having a talented, undefeated horse.

Coming off two convincing victories to begin his career, Unified was a 1-2 favorite in the Peter Pan against a modest group. The biggest question was whether he would handle the 1 1/8-mile distance.

On paper, it looked like Unified, under Jose Ortiz, was the primary speed. But Manny Franco on Singleton seemed intent on being in front and he opened up a one-length lead after a quarter-mile in 23.32 seconds and a half-mile in 46.38. Initially second, Unified found himself third, but

only a length off the lead as Super Czech came up along the inside of him, both stalk-ing Singleton.

“It wasn’t my plan A but it was my plan B,” Ortiz said. “I saw [Singleton] sending. I got good position so I decided to rate him because I don’t want [us] to kill each other.”

Unified stayed three wide and in the clear and, approaching the three-eighths pole, he stuck his head in front after six furlongs in a sharp 1:10.25. Unified opened up a three-length advantage by midstretch and held Governor Malibu at bay.

Unified, a son of Candy Ride, covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:47.14 and didn’t let Gover-nor Malibu by on the gallop-out. Unified returned $3.10 as the favorite.

“It looked like galloping out when that horse got up to him it looked like he took off again,” Jerkens said.

Don Little, who heads the Centennial syndicate which won the Belmont with Colonial Affair and Lemon Drop Kid, said “everything’s open” but he would let Jerk-ens and Steve Carr, the syndicate’s racing manager, make the final decision.

“He’s a talented horse,” Little said. “He always tries. I think he’s got the competi-tive spirit you want to see in horses. He doesn’t want to let them by.”

Two years ago, Christophe Clement won the Peter Pan with Tonalist, who went on win the Belmont when California Chrome was going for the Triple Crown. Clement trains Governor Malibu, a New York-bred son of Malibu Moon who ran a very good second to Unified.

Clement said he would wait a while before making a decision regarding the Belmont Stakes.

“I got to think about it, see how he comes out of it before I make a plan,” Clement said. “Everything’s wide open. I’m very happy. I just would have loved to have won the race.”

Governor Malibu finished second by 2 1/2 lengths over Wild About Deb. He was followed, in order, by Adventist, Decorated Soldier, Singleton, Lost Iron, and Suph Czech.

Strike Charmer just keeps getting better with age.

The 6-year-old Strike Charmer turned in arguably the best performance of her career May 14 at Belmont Park, rally-ing from off a rapid pace to a 2 1/4-length triumph over Tapitry in the $150,000 Beau-gay Stakes. Strike Charmer was winning a Grade 3 race for the second time in her career. She won the Grade 3 Cardinal Handicap at Churchill Downs in Novem-ber 2014.

Strike Charmer was reunited with jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. in the Beaugay for the first time since the pair teamed up to capture an allowance race last November at Aqueduct. That also marked the first time Strike Charmer was saddled by Mark Hennig, who had taken over the training for the daughter of Smart Strike several months earlier.

Strike Charmer was about eight lengths off the swift pace set by a rank My Miss Sophia, who flew through an opening quar-ter-mile in 23.29 seconds and a half-mile in 46.01. Strike Charmer saved ground into the stretch, eased out to continue her bid once settling for the drive, and readily ran past Tapitry inside the eighth pole to win going away.

Tapitry attended the early pace, quickly overtook the leader once settling into the stretch, but proved no match for the winner while holding off a late running Recepta to finish second. The latter took up sharply along the inside after clipping heels with Ball Dancing in the opening furlong, raced well back, rallying belatedly while never menacing the winner.

My Miss Sophia, the tepid 9-5 favorite making her first start since October, weak-ened steadily once entering the stretch and finished a tiring fourth in the field of eight older fillies and mares.

Strike Charmer, who is owned by Donald and Donna Adam’s Courtlandt Farms, completed the 1 1/16 miles over a firm course in 1:39.22 and paid $20.

Hennig said he loved seeing the quick pace, but was worried, midway through the race, that his horse might not be firing today.

“I was happy when I saw the fractions,”

Hennig said. “Last time she was further back on a softer pace. But honestly, I thought midway on the turn, it looked like she was going the wrong way. But she really kicked well and put in a really strong finish.”

Hennig said he feels Strike Charmer may be as good as she’s ever been.

“She looks like a filly who, at six, is coming the right way,” Hennig said. “I wasn’t happy with her coat this winter. The farm manager told me she’s always been a filly who never had a good coat. Now she does. We’ve made some changes with her, shoeing wise and such. Maybe that’s been the difference. She’s just a happy horse right now.”

Thatlookonyerface benefited from a ground-saving ride from Gary Boulanger, who had the son of Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird trailing in the six-horse field on the first turn.

Riker set honest fractions in the 1 1/16-mile race, with Bear’sway in close proxim-ity. Greatest Game and Dragon Bay both rallied wide into contention on the far turn, as Thatlookonyerface closed inside.

Thatlookonyerface ($66.70) went around a tiring Riker at the eighth pole, before going back to the rail en route to a nose win over Bear’sway. Greatest Game was another nose back in third, a neck in front of Dragon Bay. The favored Riker wound up fifth.

On a gusty May 15 at Woodbine, Gamble’s Ghost stamped herself as the probable favorite for the June 12 Woodbine Oaks with a hard-fought win over Caren in the Grade 3 Selene Stakes.

With Luis Contreras aboard, Gamble’s Ghost raced about seven lengths off a lively pace in the 1 1/16-mile event for 3-year-old fillies. The Oaks-eligible Caren led the way while being pressed by Niigon’s Legacy, who rushed up after starting slowly.

Gamble’s Ghost mounted an eye-catching three-wide rally on the far turn to hit the front at the head of the stretch, and then wore down Caren to prevail by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:45.05. The favored shipper Thrilled finished a flat third in the field reduced to six after the scratch of Luckbe Tanya.

Gamble’s Ghost ($6.90) was the third winner on the card for Contreras, who got a leg up from trainer Josie Carroll.

“I had to move a little bit earlier than I wanted to,” Contreras said. “I didn’t want to ride hard in the stretch [against] the wind, so I let her go from the three-eighths.”

Gamble’s Ghost, a daughter of Ghostzap-per and stakes winner Gambling Girl, is a homebred of Ivan Dalos.

There was a time earlier this year when I Will Score was tried in Triple Crown preps. Those races did not go his way. Sprints are another matter.

After finishing second in the Bachelor Stakes for 3-year-olds at six furlongs at Oaklawn Park on April 15, I Will Score won the first stakes of his career in the $100,690 Lazaro Barrera Stakes for 3-year-olds at seven furlongs at Santa Anita on May 14.

Ridden by Martin Garcia, I Will Score ($8.80) led throughout to win by a neck over a stubborn Mrazek, a 7-2 chance. Smokey Image, the champion California-bred 2-year-old male of 2015, finished third.

I Will Score was timed in 1:21.30. The win left trainer Jerry Hollendorfer impressed.

I Will Score fought for the early lead with Smokey Image and led by 1 1/2 lengths in the stretch before holding off Mrazek.

Mrazek won the Graduation Stakes for California-bred 2-year-olds last year. He offered a sustained threat to I Will Score in the final furlong of the Barrera, but could not catch the winner.

Hollendorfer urged Garcia to use I Will Score’s speed early.

“I said get out there and see if you can make the lead,” Hollendorfer said.

I Will Score set an early pace of 22.68 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 44.68 for a half-mile.

Westbrook, a maiden race winner at Los Alamitos in his debut in April, finished fourth, followed by Denman’s Call, Bistraya, and Iron Rob.

I Will Score races for owner and breeder

Hans Poetsch. A colt by Roman Ruler, I Will Score has won 3 of 6 starts and earned $173,145. He won his first two starts – a maiden race at 5 1/2 furlongs at Los Alamitos last September in his only race at 2, and an optional claimer at 6 1/2 furlongs here in January.

I Will Score was later beaten in two races at 1 1/16 miles – finishing third behind winner Mor Spirit in the Grade 3 Robert Lewis Stakes in February and running sixth behind winner Danzing Candy in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes in March – prior to his runner-up finish in the Bachelor Stakes.

Hollendorfer said the $500,000 Woody Stephens Stakes for 3-year-olds at seven furlongs at Belmont Park on June 11 is a goal for I Will Score.
