NASPR 2016 Conference
Made-to-Measure: A Personalized Approach to Psychotherapy
November 17-19
Berkeley, California, U.S.A.
Dear Colleagues:
On behalf of the North American Society for Psychotherapy Research (NASPR),
we welcome you to Berkeley, California for our organization’s 11th meeting. Like
its international parent organization, the NASPR chapter is a lively organization
dedicated to psychotherapy research of all kinds. The chapter meetings are
intimate, with shared meals and a high level of interaction between more and less
experienced researchers and clinicians, and across diverse orientations and
methodologies. The theme for the present meeting is “Made-to-Measure: A
Personalized Approach to Psychotherapy”. Working with an impressive array of
submissions, the Program Committee has created a dynamic program that is sure
to stimulate lively dialogue and debate regarding the multitude of factors that
contribute to the effectiveness of psychotherapy, considering these within a broad
spectrum of theoretical approaches, forms of psychotherapy, and scientific
methodologies. Of course, in keeping with NASPR tradition, we accepted
submissions reflecting all areas of psychotherapy research, which has led to a
diverse and rich program that will undoubtedly appeal to a broad audience.
Overall, there are 4 pre-conference workshops, 2 plenary sessions, 1 semi-
plenary session, 18 panel sessions, 9 paper sessions, 8 discussion groups, and 21
poster presentations. Please note that some of these sessions are designated with a
CE notation in the scientific program. For these select sessions, licensed
clinicians who have paid the $25 continuing education (CE) fee are eligible to
receive CE credits for attendance at the entire session. Our volunteers will sign
you in and out of these sessions, if applicable.
The conference program officially begins on Thursday afternoon with 4 pre-
conference workshops, followed by an opening reception from 5:00-7:00pm. The
reception will include hors d'oeuvres, cash bar, and live music. Friday begins
with breakfast at 7:30am, followed by opening remarks from our President at
8:30am. The opening plenary discussion, speaking to the conference theme,
Made-to-Measure: A Personalized Approach to Psychotherapy, is next and
promises to be an invigorating exchange among several experts on a timely and
important psychotherapy topic. Friday also features multiple parallel sessions and our traditional lunch/business meeting (the business meeting will also include our
announcement of trainee travel awards). The day will end with the poster session
and a cash bar from 6:00-7:30pm. Saturday begins with breakfast at 7:30am,
followed by multiple parallel sessions throughout the day. Saturday also features
lunch, a highly engaging semi-plenary session, and a fascinating closing plenary
discussion, Making Psychotherapy Research Relevant: Evidence-Based Practice
and Practice-Informed Evidence, from 5:00-6:15pm. Bringing our conference to
a close, the evening will end with a banquet, which includes a cocktail hour,
dinner, great conversation, and a live band from 7:00pm-11:00pm.
Of course, we also hope that you will take in the breath-taking beauty of the
surrounding area. Berkeley has a presence that belies its modest size (population:
112,000 people), evolving into a culinary and cultural travel scene that attracts
visitors from around the globe. It’s a great place to shift into low gear and people-
watch along quirky Telegraph Avenue while checking out the bookstores and
cafes. After strolling through the UC Berkeley campus, the Berkeley Rose
Garden and the Downtown Arts District, head into the hills for an outdoor
adventure in Tilden Park or cruise down to the waterfront park, where the San
Francisco skyline sparkles across the bay. We genuinely hope that you enjoy the
scientific program, as well as your stay in Berkeley!
Sincerely,
Your Conference and Program Planners
