EXHIBITIONS

WATERWORKS August 1, 2012 - September 30, 2012Main Salon, Chapel Gallery Reception: Friday, September 28, 2-4p, FREEWaterworks is the title of an exhibition of fibre and textile artwork created by members of the Fibre Art Network (FAN) currently on display at the Chapel Gallery. Through these artists’ eyes, the subject is surveyed and transformed into two & three-dimensional tactile forms of varying sizes and styles. The proximity of the Chapel Gallery to the North Saskatchewan River & the stunning view of the river valley from its patio make it the perfect venue for this work, which was created specifically with this space in mind.

FAN membership includes emerging fibre artists, teachers, authors, judges, and award winning quilt artists based throughout western Canada. Many have shown their work nationally and internationally and some have won both national and international recognition for their work. The cooperative engenders fellowship of like-minded friends and celebrates differences as well as common interests.Visit www.fibreartnetwork.com to learn more.

Continued from cover. Without having clear distinctions and definitions of Métis culture to respond to or reflect on, Moore finds that he has creative freedom to explore the hybridity of a Métis identity, seeing it as a negotiation between two cultures. He explains, “It is my belief that we are a people of two distinct cultures with the ability to create our own identities on an individual basis. We wear culture like clothing. And we can change, making us an extremely versatile, adaptable and dynamic people. It is in these works that I have found a way to create new relationships concerning materials and objects from both ends of this cultural spectrum. The symbolic notions of these works are stripped during the hybridization process to make way for new forms to appear.”

This exhibition is sponsored by the Battleford Allied Arts Council and touring under the management of the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils.

NATURE MORTE: Liza Gareau ToshOctober1 - 31, 2012Window Salon, Chapel Gallery

Liza Gareau Tosh was born and raised in Bellevue, Saskatchewan, a small town known for its wood sculptors and cultural heritage. Mentored by Painter and Sculptor Aurore Houle in her youth, Liza graduated from the University of Regina in 1995 with a B. Ed. (with Distinction) and went on to teach high school Art and English in Saskatchewan’s francophone

schools. It was while studying in Regina and at Université Laval in Québec City that she was able to attend workshops in watercolour and acrylic with artists Michèle Touchette and Marie Balthazar, and to meet and work with the likes of Joe Fafard and Wilf Perreault. In 2006, Liza completed her Bachelor’s in Fine Arts (with Great Distinction) at the University of Saskatchewan. Liza’s paintings always have drawing at their core, and her greatest influences are the likes of artists of both Baroque and Impressionist groups, as well as Matisse, Tom Thompson, and Emily Carr. Liza, who is of French-Canadian and Métis ancestry, owns and operates Routes Gallery at Harris, SK - an art gallery, concert venue, and artist studio.

NEWS MICHAEL BROKOP, CURATOR, CHAPEL GALLERYThe summer is now behind us and we have had a great one with the art club’s annual exhibition of current works, and the Saskatchewan Handcraft exhibition. I am very pleased to have guest curators Holly Hildebrand and Kathy Dill bring to the gallery Waterworks - a showcase of western Canadian Fiber Artists. Two outstanding workshops have been planned for the fall. The beginner’s watercolor workshop with Graham Flatt is for those experienced artists wanting to get back to the basics, as well as for new artists who want to explore a new medium. It’s sure to be a fun and productive weekend for all who attend. Then, Dean Bauche, former Director of Galleries, returns to offer an exciting course exploring a new, refreshing way of looking at the rendition of the landscape.

The Window Salon continues to showcase local talent and challenge artists through thematic exhibitions. I would encourage any local artist with a body of work to contact the Chapel Gallery to plan an exhibition.

The space behind the desk is another area open for artists to showcase their work. For the past few months, this space has featured the work of Dana Standinghorn. I am pleased to see how Dana has progressed with her paintings which are inspired by her everyday life and dreams. Her biomorphic approach is captivating & tangible as she takes colours & shapes & renders them with a striking vividness leaving the viewer engrossed onto the canvas. Dana will be displaying a full exhibition in the Window Salon in the upcoming year.

I will conclude by saying that I will be retiring as the curator of the Chapel Gallery at the end of August. I thank the city for giving me the privilege of being the curator of the gallery with the best view in town. I leave with many pleasant memories of exhibitions, positive experiences, and comments received from patrons and our members. I wish also to thank gallery member Roma Nowakowski, former resident, for her donation of art books to the gallery resource centre. Her contributions are much appreciated. Finally, a big thank you to Chris Hodge, gallery assistant, for his continued support of my efforts to achieve exhibition & gallery excellence. And to former Director of Galleries, Dean Bauche, for hiring me in the first place.

COMMUNITY POSTINGS For more event listings visit www.chapelgallery.ca or www.allensapp.com to read the full newsletter online. Print-outs available at desk.

Allen Sapp Gallery Healing Garden Workbee Wednesdays will continue until the third week of September so if you haven’t been to the garden, come and check it out! Try your hand at the Healing Garden Scavenger Hunt to learn about the medicinal plants growing within its medicine wheel shape. More information in the Events section. What a successful summer for the Healing Garden. The mixture of hot sunny days and regular rain made it an ideal year to establish a native plant garden. All of the plants in the garden look outstanding!

A summer highlight was when participants and staff from the Battleford Family Health Services community gardens came to visit and try the scavenger hunt and then treated everyone to a dinner full of fresh garden veggies amongst their plots on 108th street. Kids from The Battlefords Boys and Girls Club also spent a sunny afternoon in the garden with Kjelti touching and smelling the plants.

Many many thanks go out to all the amazing volunteers who helped out on Wednesday’s throughout the summer, weeding and watering. It was rewarding and so much fun tending the garden together! Special thanks to Joe Campbell who didn’t miss a single week!

As the fall descends the native plants will pull their energy back into Mother Earth and remain dormant until Spring awakens them again. Our final event in the Healing Garden this season was held on August 24th. Despite the rain, a group of us learned from Daphie Pooyak the protocols of picking and braiding sweetgrass. We also have sage, yarrow, raspberry leaves, mint, and hyssop to harvest this year!

Lastly, the garden was one of the featured projects in the Saskatchewan Museums and Sustainability book. You can read it online at www.saskmuseums.org/publications. The Healing Garden is made possible with the generous support of our sponsors. TD Friends of the Environment Fund, The Walmart Evergreen Fund, SaskEnergy, and the City of North Battleford.

City of North Battleford Historic Archives The Lehman Era: One Man’s Legacy in the Kinsmen Marching Band Submitted by Terry Lumsdom - Archives Committee Member and Taryn Jackson Archives Summer StudentFor almost twenty summers, Norm Lehman, fashioning a goatee, waxed mustache and crisp white uniform, marched at the head of the North Battleford parade with the North Battleford City Kinsmen Band setting the tone of the festivities with a lively Sousa march.

This colorful showman arrived from Regina in 1951 to serve as an assistant to friend and band founder Robbie Robinson. His impressive credentials included performing as a coronet soloist for 12 years with the Regina Rifles Band, enlisting and serving 5 years as a Royal Air Force Bandmaster.

Page 15: North Battleford Galleries Newsletter

15

North Battleford’s Outstanding Youth Movement was the label used when referring to North Battleford City Kinsmen Band. Wayne Jenner said. “Norm Lehman bands marched in perfect alignment, eyes straight ahead, horns up, and tucked under when not in use…He was a firm disciplinarian, however, well respected by his members.”

The influence of this man’s competitive spirit on his students was reflected by the results. The band was a three-time winner at the Saskatoon Exhibition Parade and competed in the Calgary Stampede Parade in 1955, 1956 and 1958 winning the coveted T. Eaton trophy and the Red Ribbon for best band in the competition.

During The Royal Visit of 1959 the band performed in Biggar for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip. The scheduled 10-minute whistle stop had to be extended to 20 minutes. At this performance, Her Majesty remarked to one of the officials, “Where do they come from and where did they learn to play like that?”

During the late 1950s and into the 1960s, the city witnessed the debut of the City Kinsmen Band’s presentation on ice in the rink that at present is our bowlarena. Band on ice presented a significant challenge as one former band member recalls, “This task proved to be a little tough, particularly for those of us who had not skated.” Always the innovator, Lehman brought this unique performance to spectators throughout the province.

The 60s were filled with highlights. The Moose Jaw International Band Festival presented a great opportunity for Lehman to showcase his band’s talent, winning individually and with the Fancy Drill marches. These routines were set to music such as the Hawaiian War Chant, Yellow Bird, and El Capitan, to name a few. In our centennial year the band traveled to Montreal for Expo 67 to represent Saskatchewan. The Lehman era culminated with the first performance put on by a rural band at the Centennial Auditorium in Saskatoon, combining with the North Battleford Centennial Choir under the direction of Sheila Osborne.

For some years the band had a sign claiming “The Best Band in the Land (?)”. After years of success across Saskatchewan and Alberta, the question mark was deemed unnecessary.

Across the hall from Norm’s office was his workshop, where with a vice, soldering gun and plenty of spare parts he worked tirelessly to ensure all members had a working instrument.

Page 16: North Battleford Galleries Newsletter

16

Wages of the day for a director of a band necessitated a supplemental trade. Lehman also worked as a barber at Ralph’s Barber Shop. The joke was he got 50 bucks a month and all the hair he could cut. An alumnus Jack Ross recalls a trip to the barbershop with his father. While getting his hair cut, Jack expressed his lifelong wish to be a drummer. Lehman said to him “Got a drum waiting for you!” and to the band hall he went, wish fulfilled.

John Norman Lehman passed away March 3, 1971 at the age of 62. He had made North Battleford his home for 20 years and made the city a better place. Different bandmasters have brought different qualities to the band over its 63 year history, but none have committed to the band and the community as Norm Lehman did. A former band member Garnet Speer remarked, “We always wondered if another Norm Lehman would come along.”

The North Battleford City Kinsmen Band generously donated their archival material to the City of North Battleford Historic Archives. If anyone wishes to donate material, the archives can be reached at 445-1786 or by email at [email protected].
