Pumping you upAlmost Strongest Man contest returns to Block Party
Could the world’s strongest man reside in North Bend?Find out when Alpine Fitness and Emerald City Smoothie
winnow down all comers to crown the Almost Strongest Man competition winner at the North Bend Downtown Block Party.
The fitness competition is 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon, July 17. Giveaways include free stuff from local businesses.
“The real prize is bragging rights,” said Jordan Bullock, a trainer at Alpine Fitness who will compete for the second year.
“It’s a thing for people to have fun and get a taste of what we do at the gym,” he said.
Events include the farmer’s walk, in which lifters carry heavy metal pipes, and the atlas stone carry, where contes-tants muscle a heavy concrete ball on their shoulders.
New this year is a wheelbarrow event. Contestants may have to haul big weights — or a team member.
Many of the contestants in the recently created Block Party competition are bodybuilders and competitive lift-ers.
“Strength has always been an aim for me,” said Bullock, who trains for bodybuilding competitions at the gym.

North Bend’s Centennial theme, “The Arts in North Bend Are Alive and Growing” is coming true.
Created for the North Bend Block Party, a live demonstration area and gal-lery, dubbed “Arts Right Down Our Alley,” will be presented in front of Centennial Mural and in the alley between North Bend Way and Second Street, behind Bank of America.
“Arts Right Down Our Alley” features lively demonstrations of weaving and pot-tery making, visual arts and expertly made hand-crafted items.
Included is the display of a 20-foot hand-carved totem and on-site wood carving at the head of the alley.
Members from the Snoqualmie Tribe
will offer unique jewelry; Valley artists will show and sell original art; hand-made quilts and cultural story cloths by made by members of the Hmong community will lend an international flair to the cel-ebration.
At the end of the alley, near Bank of America, local musicians will entertain on their own stage. Valley Bluegrass players, Susanna Fuller from Cascade Jazz and The Valley Dolls will round out the day.
North Bend’s Centennial Mural, which is mounted on the Glazier building, fea-tures artists including North Bend cross-stitcher Richard Buchmiller and potter Jeff Griswold. Buchmiller and Griswold will give live demonstrations of their crafts by the mural.
Dance Academy bringing Broadway to Block PartyNorth Bend Way meets Broadway when the newly
formed Cascade Dance Academy Company presents three showstoppers from their recent spring recital, 4 p.m. Saturday, July 17, on the Block Party stage.
The group of girls, ages 10 to 15, performs under the direction of Stacee Raber Nault.
Their trio of selections, including a routines from “Chicago,” “Hair” and Fosse’s “Dancin’ Man,” are pol-ished and look awesome, Cascade Dance Academy owner Katie Higuchi said. Raber Nault is a musical theater and Broadway veteran who teaches at the academy as well as at Cornish College of the Arts. Performers hail from through-out the Valley.
“They work so hard all year long,” Higuchi said. “Many of them spend five days a week dancing with us, honing their skills. They’re getting so good, we wanted to give them other opportunities to perform.”

Pickering American Legion building in Snoqualmie.
A bake sale benefiting the memorial is 3 to 8 p.m.

Party. For information, call (425) 888-9152.

embrace their respective com-munities in a myriad of ways,
including the support of small farms, local agriculture and the
universal fair food movement. The Slow Food Snoqualmie Valley Chapter is hosting a “valleys-wide” community
celebration, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Monday, July 19, at 21 Acres Farm, located at 13701 N.E.

friends in both Valleys are encouraged to attend a com-
munity potluck and take part in the common language of food.

that the local food community must be good, clean and fair.

Food, folks and fun Hunger for glory
Hungry competitors can get a free meal at the North Bend Block Party. There is no cost to take part. It’s fun and messy, said Kyle Twede, emcee of the event and owner of Twede’s Cafe in North Bend and the Chew Chew Cafe in Snoqualmie. He needs teams of four to sign up.“People cheer, laugh,” he said. “The smart ones get up there and have a burger for free.”George’s Bakery hosts the 4:30 p.m. donut competition. To sign up for the contest, call Kyle Twede at (425) 831-5511.
