North Bend’s Centennial theme, “The Arts in North Bend Are Alive and Growing” is coming true.

Created for the North Bend Block Party, a live demonstration area and gal-lery, dubbed “Arts Right Down Our Alley,” will be presented in front of Centennial Mural and in the alley between North Bend Way and Second Street, behind Bank of America.

“Arts Right Down Our Alley” features lively demonstrations of weaving and pot-tery making, visual arts and expertly made hand-crafted items.

Included is the display of a 20-foot hand-carved totem and on-site wood carving at the head of the alley.

Members from the Snoqualmie Tribe

will offer unique jewelry; Valley artists will show and sell original art; hand-made quilts and cultural story cloths by made by members of the Hmong community will lend an international flair to the cel-ebration.

At the end of the alley, near Bank of America, local musicians will entertain on their own stage. Valley Bluegrass players, Susanna Fuller from Cascade Jazz and The Valley Dolls will round out the day.

North Bend’s Centennial Mural, which is mounted on the Glazier building, fea-tures artists including North Bend cross-stitcher Richard Buchmiller and potter Jeff Griswold. Buchmiller and Griswold will give live demonstrations of their crafts by the mural.

Dance Academy bringing Broadway to Block PartyNorth Bend Way meets Broadway when the newly

formed Cascade Dance Academy Company presents three showstoppers from their recent spring recital, 4 p.m. Saturday, July 17, on the Block Party stage.

The group of girls, ages 10 to 15, performs under the direction of Stacee Raber Nault.

Their trio of selections, including a routines from “Chicago,” “Hair” and Fosse’s “Dancin’ Man,” are pol-ished and look awesome, Cascade Dance Academy owner Katie Higuchi said. Raber Nault is a musical theater and Broadway veteran who teaches at the academy as well as at Cornish College of the Arts. Performers hail from through-out the Valley.

“They work so hard all year long,” Higuchi said. “Many of them spend five days a week dancing with us, honing their skills. They’re getting so good, we wanted to give them other opportunities to perform.”

Party bake sale helps vet memorial

In the last century, more than 50 Valley men and women

sacrificed their lives in service to the United States. Valley vet-

erans are building a memorial to these patriots at the Renton

Pickering American Legion building in Snoqualmie.

A bake sale benefiting the memorial is 3 to 8 p.m.

Saturday, July 17, in downtown North Bend, during the Block

Party. For information, call (425) 888-9152.

Slow food group holding potluck

The Snoqualmie and Sammamish agricultural valleys

embrace their respective com-munities in a myriad of ways,

including the support of small farms, local agriculture and the

universal fair food movement. The Slow Food Snoqualmie Valley Chapter is hosting a “valleys-wide” community

celebration, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Monday, July 19, at 21 Acres Farm, located at 13701 N.E.

171st Street, near Woodinville.Residents, neighbors and

friends in both Valleys are encouraged to attend a com-

munity potluck and take part in the common language of food.

The Slow Food Snoqualmie Valley Chapter, also called a

‘Convivium,’ was founded in 2008 by a handful of farmers, chefs, restaurant owners, and inspired citizens who believe

that the local food community must be good, clean and fair.

Walker at [email protected] or (425) 844-9038. Visit www.slowfoodsnovalley.org for

North Bend’s downtown blocks will be the scene of dancing in the streets, mighty men, cute pets and colorful kids when North Bend Downtown Block Party returns this weekend.

The party is 3 to 10 p.m. Saturday, July 17, taking place on two city blocks closed to traffic.

There is no admission charge for the event, which showcases an overflowing itinerary of music, activities and vendor booths of all types.

Just as last year, the block party will fea-ture a Kids Area sponsored by Encompass. The Kids Area will include games, a dunk tank, a build-your-own-car raceway, putt putt golf, a rock climbing wall, an obstacle course, a hoop shoot and a hula hoop contest.

A full slate of local musical talent, scouted by Danny Kolke of Boxley’s, runs through-out the seven-hour event and climaxes with a performance of classic tunes by Shelly and the Curves. The complete schedule can be found at Facebook.com — search for North Bend Downtown Block Party.

The roster of special events promises to be as wild as last year’s schedule. The events include a donut eating contest hosted by George’s Bakery, a cheeseburger-eating

contest hosted by Twede’s Cafe (call 425-831-5511 to enter).

There is also a dog fashion show hosted by Pet Place Market, a doggy spa hosted by U Dirty Dog, barbeque demonstrations by Cascade Spa and Stove, an artists’ alley sponsored by Snoqualmie Valley Arts, a strength competition sponsored by Alpine Fitness, a recital performance by Cascade Dance Academy, a teen skater film activ-ity sponsored by the Voice and a “Boarder Alley” skateboard demonstration.

T-shirts are designed by Brent Cook, owner of Front Row Graphics, and will be available for purchase.

Sponsors of the block party are Cook Real Estate, Down to Earth Photography, Emerald City Smoothie, Encompass, Front Row Graphics, Jolene’s Hair & Skin Care, North Bend Shell, North Bend Theatre, Party Hoppers, Rainier Asphalt & Concrete, Sallal Water, Scott’s Dairy Freeze and Straight Chiropractic.

The block party organizing committee includes Stacey Cepeda of Encompass, Gina Estep of the city of North Bend, Jolene Kelly of Jolene’s Hair & Skin Care and Cindy Walker of Emerald City Smoothie and North Bend Theatre.

Food, folks and fun Hunger for glory

Hungry competitors can get a free meal at the North Bend Block Party. But there’s a catch. The meal in question is a hamburger weighing more than eight pounds, and the huge sandwich comes as part of the Twede’s Cafe burger eating contest, 6 p.m. at Bendigo Stage. There is no cost to take part. It’s fun and messy, said Kyle Twede, emcee of the event and owner of Twede’s Cafe in North Bend and the Chew Chew Cafe in Snoqualmie. He needs teams of four to sign up.“People cheer, laugh,” he said. “The smart ones get up there and have a burger for free.”George’s Bakery hosts the 4:30 p.m. donut competition. To sign up for the contest, call Kyle Twede at (425) 831-5511.
