Site Location

The campus of North Carolina A&T State University is located within thecity of Greensboro, North Carolina. Since its inception as a land grantuniversity in 1891, North Carolina A&T has year after year carried a richtradition of leadership and achievement. Spread over 188 beautiful acresat the center of North Carolina's Piedmont, A&T's campus is just 9 blocksfrom downtown Greensboro. Well-known for its quality of life, the area'smix of industry with schools and universities contributes to its economicand cultural diversity. An international airport plus two interstate highwaysfacilitate easy access from all directions. DIN.

Buildable Area

The buildable area for the new Student Center will be in the location of theexisting Memorial Student Union and the site area to the west of theexisting Union. This area is boarded by Campbell Hall to the east, CooperHall to the west, John Mitchell Drive to the south and Marteena Hall andRobeson Theater to the north. The red frames indicate the buildable areaon the site plan to the right.

Proximity Parking & Vehicular Movement

Parking areas adjacent to the theproposed Student Center site areidentified within the blue dashed areas.There are four (4) primary parkingdestinations within walking distance fromthe Student center site.

Accessible parking and parking for VIPspecial events will be located directly tothe north of the new Student Centercomplex. Additional overflow parking forspecial events can also occur directly tothe south of the new Student Centeracross John Mitchell Drive.

Streetscape enhancements are alsoplanned for along John Mitchell Drive.These enhancements are intended toimprove the overall experience andapproach to the new Student Center andalso establish connectivity to the futurecampus development of Precinct Facross Laurel Street.

One of the most significant attributes of the newStudent Center and its proposed site are theviews, view corridors and approaches theproject affords itself.

There are three (3) primary views to and fromthe new center.

Student Center: Hub & Collector

The new Student Center will serve asthe campus Hub and Collector for NCA&T State University. Because of itscentral campus location, prominencealong a significant east – westtransportation artery (John MitchellDrive) and at the intersection of the twoprimary campus greens, the newStudent Center and it’s site has theopportunity be the most successful“iconic” campus building for it’sstudents, faculty and community.

The new Student Center will bedesigned as “the focal point of the focalpoint of the campus”.

A contemporary and sophisticated form of bookstore. A basearchitecture organizes the space upon which programmatic zones andcontent categories are overlaid. A unique Aggie identity could bedeveloped through the use of color, material, environmental graphics,language, and flexible zones where students can relax and gather.

In additional to the main Bookstore, the New Student Center will haveadditional Retail venues. Space for Banking and a Printing / MailService will be provided for the students. A Salon and Barber Shop hasalso been programmed for the new Center. The program does allow forfuture retail venues to be identified at a later date.

Student Centers and Unions recognize the importance of adequate andappropriate lounge and study space in today’s competitive facilities. Oncampus students have specific needs along with commuter studentsand graduate students needs may which be somewhat different. Placesto study informally and comfortable spaces to touch down are all veryimportant. These spaces will also serve as multi-use functions for avariety of the Center’s programs.

The program for the New Student Center will consist of a variety of foodvenues. A “marketplace (al la carte)” dining hall will be designed. A Food Emporium (C – Store) with aCafé will provide quick service items as well as convenience selection.

A dynamic interchange of open spaces, pathways, and covered areas tobe activated by students to gather, study, move to and from classes,hold an event, put on a performance, or simply relax are essential thedesign of the Center. Our design will act as the stage consisting ofvarious trigger elements.

Over a two day period the design team conductedcampus wide intercept interviews and designcharette work sessions with the A&T students andreached over 700 students as dedicated andcommitted participates.

The result was an informed and tailored programfor NC A&T students by NC A&T students.

Student input and knowledge that was receivedwas a critical advantage for the design team in thedevelopment of the program and planning of theNew Student Center.

Student participation and engagement is anongoing part of our planning and designprocess. Located in the existing Student Unionis a 10 ‘ X 12’ information display which willkeep the student updated on the progress anddevelopment of the project.

The information display wall will be updated atwith relevant Student Center developments asthe project progressed from each significantphase and milestone.

Five (5) different block and stack adjacencydiagram studies were developed and explored toensure as many options as possible were studied.

Stakeholder Work Sessions

Several day long work sessions were held with thekey stakeholders to review and discuss theproposed program and the adjacencies of eachbuilding option.

After the work session the Planning and ExecutiveCommittees followed with owner and usercomments to be incorporated into the finalprogramming options.
