Lights! Camera! Action! Celebrate North Carolina Film North Carolina citizens and filmmakers have a fascination with the silver screen, and filmmaking is part of North Carolina. That rich past is captured in " Celebrate North Carolina Film," part of the "Celebrate North Carolina" initiative of the Office of First Gentleman Bob Eaves and arranged in cooperation with the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources. Historic documentaries, futuristic films and everything in between are made in North Carolina.

"In North Carolina, film is more than just entertainment, it's a way for us to share our stories with the world and an important sector of the economy," said Eaves. "We are fortunate to have the unique combination of outstanding, scenic locations and a skilled and creative workforce. In addition, our world-class film school programs that are training the next generation of film makers and pro-duction workers will mean that North Carolina will continue to play a leading role in the film industry in the future."

Details of the first film shot in North Carolina can be found on the Celebrate North Carolina site. In 1921 Dare County School Super-intendant Mabel Evans shot and produced "The Lost Colony" about the settling of the Outer Banks in the 1580s. The long running symphonic opera of the same name still delights audiences every summer in Manteo.

The web site offers glimpses into the past with vintage footage from the State Archives of North Carolina, including a future-oriented look at the state from the 1949 black and white short film, "Tar Heel Family." It examines the shift from a farm to an industry based economy, and how the state can continue to be progressive.

Other gems include the movies of H. Lee Walters from the 1930s. Walters traveled to cities and towns across North Carolina to make movies of everyday people. He showed the films in local theaters and provided an affordable pick-me-up for folks living through the Great Depression.

North Carolina plays a part on the big screen as well. Blockbusters such as "The Color Purple," "The Last of the Mohicans," and "Forrest Gump," did filming in the state. The TV shows "One Tree Hill," and "Dawson's Creek" were shot here also. The movie "Iron Man 3" should start production this year. A list of productions and locations is on the web site.

Film festivals for eclectic tastes also are popular destinations for tourists to North Carolina. In coordination with First Gentleman Eaves' Celebrate North Carolina initiative, the Southern Documentary Fund is providing a series of films for discussion groups. The films focus on North Carolina people, history and culture. Public libraries across North Carolina will be purchasing the films and hosting viewing and discussion programs at their libraries. Many of them will include discussions led by the local film maker.

For additional information visit Celebrate North Carolina Film and the State Archives Film Collection. For information on the film discussion groups at public libraries call (919) 807-7421.

BUS TRIP TO BROOKGREEN GARDENS – UPDATE!!! Reservations are now being taken at Town Hall for a bus trip to Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet, SC, on April 10, 2012. So far, we’ve sold 34 tickets, leaving only 13 tickets to sell. The price of admission, the private tour, the bus and driver fees come to a total of $32 per person. At the time you book your trip, you can opt to pay an extra $7 to be booked on a 45-minute Creek Cruise. Most everyone has booked this option which features a pontoon boat ride through tribu-tary creeks of the Waccamaw River, past abandoned rice fields (now home to alligators, waterfowl and other wildlife). Did you know that Brookgreen Gardens has the largest outdoor sculpture gar-den in the country? It also has walking trails, a zoo, an arboretum, a museum, a gift shop and more. But, the most spectacular feature of Brookgreen Gardens is THE GARDENS, which should be absolutely gorgeous in April. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Reserve your spot on the bus today!!!

Letter From the Chair

Dear Members: The season is well on the way and we are getting excited about the great events taking place this year! Thanks to all of you who came out and supported the Polar Plunge last month. The weather was amazing and it appeared that everyone had a great time while raising money for the Special Olympics of New Hanover County. I have to say that there was a great sense of team unity and creativity in this year’s “plunge”! Coming up in a few weeks, we have the 8th Annual Steve Haydu St. Patrick’s Lo Tide Run on Sat. the 17th and the 16th Annual Wing Fling on Sat. the 24th. Both of these events are great ways for you to be a part in giving back to the community. I realize that it’s hard to donate monetarily to all of the worthy causes that happen on Pleasure Island.

So instead of opting out altogether, try donating your time as a volunteer. It is often an overlooked option that happens to be very rewarding! All events, especially those backed by the Chamber, de-pend heavily on volunteers and could not be as successful without them. So try a new approach this year and make a commitment to donate some time. I can assure you, you’ll be glad you did! While I am on the subject of volunteering, I would like to challenge all of our members to look at the Chamber’s 2012 calendar of events and find at least one event to volunteer for. This can be done individually, or as a joint effort with your co-workers. We consistently need volunteers throughout the year and unfortunately, Greg spends a lot of his time searching for those who are willing to help. I am sure he would not object to you calling him before he gets around to calling you! A special thanks to Pete Donat and the entire staff of Havana’s for hosting our February social. The food and service was outstanding and they did a great job hosting! We had a great crowd in-cluding a good number of new members, as well as, existing members who have never attended one of the monthly socials. The monthly socials are an excellent way to meet other members and promote your business! Make plans to attend this month’s social on March 14th, hosted by The Shuckin’ Shack and Pleasure Island Rentals. Each year these guys put on a first class event, so make sure you put the date in your calendar. Be sure to mark your calendars for April 14th for the 16th Annual Pleasure Island Chowder

Cook Off and May 12th for the 1st Annual Pleasure Island Bluegrass By The River. Sincerely,

Mike Worley 2012 Chairman-Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce
