Generation 1. John Hiatt.

John Hiatt came to Virginia from England in 1682-83. He was a

Quaker and the father of two or more sons, Willia.m and John.

Generation 11. Yvilliam Hiatt.

Villiam. Hiatt married Llary Smdth about 1700. They had four sons:

George, John Willian and Elisha.

1. George Hiatt married Martha Walcefield in 1725. They had eleven

children, the eldest Mary b. April 28, 1726, the youngest Joesph b.

April 3, 1753.

2. John Hiatt married Rachel Wilson in 1722. Their eldest son

was born April 1, 1723.

3. William Hiatt married Alice Louden March 1748 at Hopewell in

Frederick Con, Province of Virginia.

George, John and William Hiatt settled in what was then Orange

County, Province of Virginia on lands near where' Winchester in

located in 1735. They were att Friends and belonged to the Hopewell

organization.

About 1750 Gov. Fairfaz of Vitginia issued an order annulling

all grants of land by former Governors of the province and demanded the

all settlers pay him for their holdings. As this was impossible for

many to do quite a large number sought homes in North Carolina.

As early as 1751 the Hiatts located in Rowan County, M. C.

which at that time extended over a large territory. George (1)

and his entire family'j’were there in 1753 and several of William’s (3)

sons left Virgiani later on. William died about that time and his

will wn.s provated in what is now Frederick County.

The Census of 1790 of North Carolina gives in the western part

of the state the followinf^ Hiatts as heads of families. In Burke Count

Kezehiah Hiatt and Simon Hyett; in Rowan County, John Highat; in

Surry County; Benjamin, Jo|in and Joseph Hiett, Joseph Hiet, Jr.

George Hiett, William Hiett; in Guilford County Ashor, Christooher,

Christopher, Jr., Enos, Even, George, George, Isaac, Isaac, Joh n,

John, Jr., Joseoh. Joseph Hiatt. In central North Carolina, in

Wake County, Asa Hiot. In eastern North Carolina, in Craven County,

George Hiet; in Bertie County, Elisha Hiat; in Northampton *^ounty

Elisah Hiott; in Halifaz County Davie Hyatt; in Gates County, Rebekah

Thos. and Jesse Hiatt.

4. Elisha Hiatt. It is supposed that Elishz Hiatt settled in some

other part of Virginia or went directly to North Carolina about the

time the others bought land in Virginia as there were many Friends

gOj.ng southward about that tiiae. The State Enumerations of Virginia

from 1782 to 1785 do not give the name Elisha Hiatt, and also the

Census os 1790 of South Carolina.

Generation 111. Elihha Hiatt.

Elisha Hiatt appears on the Census of 1790 of N. C. in Bertie

County as the head of a family consisting of one white male over

16, one whie male under 16, and six white females. The writer thinks

he married onetof the daughters of John Battle of Bertie County,

whose will was probated in 1740, because one of John Battle's sons

was nam.ed Jesse Battle and this name Jesse Battle appears twice later

in tne Hyatt family. It is probable that Elisha Hiatt left the

Friends before coming to North Carolina. The name Hiatt does not

appear in the Book of the Records of Virths and Deaths of Rich

Square Monthly Meetings of Friends.

Generation IV. Elisha Hiatt of Hyatt.

The name of Eiisha Hiatt appears on the Census of 1790 of Notth

ampton County as the head of a family consisting of one white male

name was John and he was a Quaker. He was the father of two or more gore

William and John a.re the only sons of which I find any record, 1

"William married Mary Smith about 1700. They had four sons George, J 2 3 4 John, William, and Elisha.

1. "George married Martha Wakefield 1725. They had eleven children,

the oldest Mary born April 28,1726 and so on to Joseph born April 3,

1753, tho youngest. Of this family I have descendants down to a late

day.

2. "John married Rachel ’Wilson 1722. Their oldest son was born April

1,1723. This is the line to which I belong and I have many of the

family enrllled.

3. "William married Alice Louden March 1748, at Hopewell in Fredrick

Go.Province of Virginia.

" Of Elisha I have no record whatever. The first three mentioned

settles in what was then Orange County,Province of Virginia on lands

near where Winchester is located in 1735. They were all frierids and

belonged to the Hopewell organization. Now it is quite likely that ^

about the time the others bought land in Va. as there were m^any Friends

going southward about that time.

" About 1750 Gov.Fairfax of Va province issued an order annuling

a.11 grants of land by former Governor of the province end demanded that

all settlers oay him for their holding. As this was impossible for many

to do quite a large number sought homes in N.C.

" As early as 1751 the Hiatts located in Rowan county,N.C. which at 1

time estended over a large territory. George and his entire family were

there first of all, John and his family were there in 1753 and several

of William's sons left Virginia later on. Williami died about that time

and his will wrs probated in the nov; Fredrick Co.Court House.

" My (treatp-randfather wps miarried in what is now Guilf-nd Co.N.C. in

17o4. His name was Willia^i, His youngest son Richard born 1775 was my

grandfether. He married in Grayson Co. Va.in 1802, moved to Ohio in

1810, and subsequently to Indiana where he purchased 1000 acres of land

and divided it among his children. This is a very brief statement of

what I have learned about out people. I an very much inclined to think

this Elisha is your ancestor and I would be only too glad to delay the

publication o.. my book if I could get his line in shape to go into the

work. See what you can find out and let me know. Cur people have always

spelled their name Hiatt but it seems that in the last half century

several of the line living south have been spelling the name with a y

T/hich is the old English form.

" There are two large families of Hyatts in this country. One knov/n ^

the Maryland family and the other the New York Family. They always

spelled their name with a y. They are however no relatives of our famil;

They were until recent years active members of the Episcopal Ciiurch a.nd

a large proportion of them in Maryland still hold tha.t faith. I have

thoroghly investigated the lines of their families and find tha.t while

we were no doublt one family in England several centuries ago, In Arr>-

erica we are three families.

" Jesse and Elisha are names that are found in many of the Hiatt

families for two hundred years pa.st.
