Clamping down on illegal hoardings in the city, the North Municipal Corporation
has filed 160 complaints for FIRs against various advertising agencies. This comes
after the Delhi High Court ordered removal of illegal hoardings, billboards and
posters from buildings citing violation of laws by the “hoarding mafia”.
The maximum number of cases — 44 — is from the Rohini zone, officials said. The
corporation is taking action against several ad agencies such as Graphic Ads,
Glamour, Sikka Media, Pioneer Image Advertising.
Corporation sources said the advertisers had occupied spaces much beyond those
officially provided to them via a tendering process by the Corporation.
In some cases, unipoles had been constructed without the requisite permission.
Each unipole earns the corporation Rs 2-3 lakh a year. The advertisers make much
more, the official said.
The public interest litigation filed in the Delhi High Court had stated, “Most of the
advertisements are in the form of large banners, posters and hoardings. They are
installed in public spaces or on private buildings. In some cases, they are
dangerously hung from private homes and flats. Not only are they completely
unauthorised and generate illegal profits, in many cases, they are immensely
hazardous to public.”
The corporation staff has been asked to check for illegal hoardings in all its zones.
