This well deserved award is indicative of the generosity of people in the North County, who are renowned for their giving nature. Shop manager, Damian Bridges told the County Leader, “It is wonderful to see Patricia honoured in this way and the award reflects her dedication and commitment. There are many more like Patricia, who generously give their time to work in all the Vincent’s shops and there is room for many more volunteers. The award is particularly appro- priate as 2011 has been designated the European Year of volunteering,” he said. Patricia has six grown up children and is a grand- mother eight times over and loves being involved with the charity shop. Speaking to the County Leader, she said, “I really love my work and meeting different people all the time. I have some great friends, which I have made since I started work there.” She is no stranger to volunteering and worked for the Swords Citizens Information centre for three years. The Swords shop is situated in the Castle Shopping Centre and is currently undergoing an expansion. The adjacent unit has been acquired and both units are going to be refurbished into one large shop. “Because of this expansion, volunteers and donations have never been more urgently needed than now,” said Damian. “I want to give back to the community excellent value and bargains, which they can avail of in these stringent times,” said a committed Damian. The spirit of volunteerism is very evident in the shop and Damian was very quick to praise the boundless energy and attitude of people who give of their time in such a generous fashion. “There’s always a great atmosphere here and people love coming to work, even though the work is hard. It is one of the busier shops for donations,” he said. The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul Dublin region recently held their Annual Retail Awards Ceremony. It was at this ceremony that volunteer and Oldtown resi- dent, Patricia Newman, from the Vincent’s Shop in Swords received the ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award. By Patrick Finnegan Balbriggan Senior Citizens Group organised their annual outing with a one day trip to Athlone on Sunday 10th July last. The outing was open to any senior citizen in Balbriggan aged over 66 years and the cost was a very reasonable 15 per person. The very first outing of the Senior Citizens in Balbriggan took place more than a half a century ago, in 1958 and since then, it has become a long awaited and regular event at the beginning of each July. Every year, the organisers choose a different destina- tion. This year, more than 80 senior citizens came to Athlone, the vibrant town located in the centre of Ireland on the banks of the River Shannon. Here they visited Clonmacnoise, the early Christian site founded by St. Ciarán in the mid-6th century. They were all enthu- siastic and happy to have another opportunity to spend a whole day together. “We look forward to this day out all year long. It is a great opportunity to meet and have a fun outing all together. We have travelled, admired the landscapes, taken dinner in a hotel in Athlone and then enjoyed a dancing evening before we came home,” said Cora Kelly, one of the organ- isers. “It’s lovely to spend the day together.” The Senior Citizens group was founded in 1958 and at Continued on page 18 53rd Annual Outing For Senior Citizens By Roxanna Neag Patricia Newman, receiving her winner's trophy from manager of Swords Vincent's shop, Damian Bridges.

Preparation TechniquesClean the barbecue grill after each use with a metallicbrush to remove any food particles that may havestuck on during cooking. Cleaning avoids the risk ofcontamination. Keep the meat in the fridge until timeto cook it. Do not leave it on the grill in the sun whilewaiting for the barbecue to heat up. Preheat grills forabout ten minutes and oil them lightly to avoid foodsticking to them. Place the grill as far as possiblefrom the heat source to avoid flaming. Before cookingthe food on a charcoal barbecue, wait until thebriquettes are white hot. Never leave your barbequeunattended once its lit up.

Gas GrillsGas grills are considered the more convenient option -you can get instant ignition of fuel and correct tempera-ture consistently. Set up your grill in an open area andalways barbecue in a well-ventilated area. When using abarbecue grill, be sure that all parts of the unit arefirmly in place and that the grill is stable.

CharcoalThis is the most common form of fuel, and comes eitherin pre-formed briquettes (which are more efficient) or aslump wood (which is cheaper). Hardwood can be usedfor large barbecues, but is quite impractical for thenormal commercial makes.

LIGHTING UPYou can use lighter fluids to get the charcoalalight - but it needs to be done with care.Sprinkle some all over the charcoal, then wait fora few minutes for it to get absorbed. Fire lighters(broken up into smaller pieces and scatteredamong the charcoal) can be used, but don’t startcooking until all the pieces are completelyburned out, or the smoke will produce someunpleasant fumes.

A tremendous feeling of anticipation and excite-ment is evident in Balbriggan, as the clockcounts down to the eagerly awaited Balbriggan

Formula Fun day. This innovative project is the brain-child of Balbriggan Formula Fun, with the support ofBalbriggan Town Council and Balbriggan Chamber ofCommerce. The event will take place this Sunday, 24thJuly from 12 noon to 8 pm, which will result in trafficrestrictions in the town centre during this time. Now that registration is closed, a lottery will take placelater this week to inform the lucky winners, who willcompete in the races. The age groups for the pedalraces are 8 to 9, 10 to 11, 12 to 13 and 14 to 15. Therewill be a total of 16 karts for each age category (fourkarts in each heat), as well as novelty races and tradersraces for those over 16 years of age. Following the heats, the winners of each heat will advance to the final.Above all, this is a family day and everyone is urged toget up and take the whole family and show the commu-nity spirit for which Balbriggan is rightly famous. All weneed now is for the families of Balbriggan to rallyaround, and hopefully, if it is successful, will become apermanent fixture on the calendar of events for thisgreat town. A carnival atmosphere is expected and well knownrocker, Brush Shields and his band, Skid Row will bethe headline act for the day. Family fun and musicalentertainment will be provided in the Quay Street carparks. To add to the family fun, there will be bouncycastles, face painting, a food and craft fair, as well as amotor exhibitors’ area, where local motor companieswill show off their wares. have done trojan work to ensure the success of thisunique event. From the moment the initiative wasmooted, the respective representatives sprung intoaction. Anthony Murphy, representing the localChamber, has been actively encouraging his membersto become involved in the venture and we can confi-dently expect them to ‘rise to the occasion’ withspecial offers up to and including the day. A reallygreat effort is being made by chamber members inthis respect.

Similarly, Ian Lawless, Chairman of Balbriggan FormulaFun said the initiative is “based around road safetyusing pedal go-kart races,” which are bound to creategreat excitement in the town. The day is all about funand families, with entertainment provided for the enjoy-ment of all. “It will be a free, family fun day,” he said.Meanwhile Brian Murray from the Town Council hasbeen working like a beaver to make sure everything isin ship shape for this great day. The races will start on Quay Street at Molly’sCafe and the karts will race down Quay Street andfinish half way along Harbour Terrace. All we need todo now is to add families. Great Success OfBalbrigganFarmers’ MarketThe thriving Balbriggan Fish and Farmers’market is continuing to prosper as it enters itsthird year in the town. The people whoregularly come to ourmarket in all kinds ofweather are so heart-warming andwelcoming, it really isan eye opener. We at D.M.G set out initially togive our customers in Balbriggan fresh, qualityIrish grown vegetables, at economic prices,” hesaid. The market recently opened on Saturday on atrial basis and it was deemed a great success.Market manager, Michael Grimes is delightedwith the community spirit which is very evident

every Friday. “We provide top class, freshproduce to shoppers, which is sourced locallyand is therefore the freshest produce availableanywhere. As it is locally produced, there is nodelay in getting to market,” he said. The atmosphere generated at the market inGeorge’s Square in the town is reminiscent of acontinental town, with interesting stalls andgreat value everywhere. The variety of produceranges from fruit and vegetables, to more exoticproduce like authentic Sicilian food andIreland’s only buffalo mozzarella cheese. The Farmers’ market will be involved in the

First ImpressionsOf IrelandThe very first impressionof Ireland I got was theview of the rough coastwith its cl i f fs and theglowing green meadowsin the background. Itwas breathtaking, espe-cially when you are notused to living near thesea. I was flabbergastedbecause I’ve never seensuch a big city without skyscrapers. Leavingthe plane, I took some deep breaths of fresh airand was thrilled because it‘s so clean and

refreshing. To get to my apartment in Santry, Itook a double-decker bus for the first time inmy life. I could hardly imagine that the buswon’t tip over driving on winding roads. I feltendangered driving on the left hand side of the

road sitting in the frontrow of the upper floor, although it must be a verycommon experience forIrish people. For me, itwas a rough tr ip, l ikeriding a horse or being ina boat bopping on thesea. I arrived in Santrywith trembling knees. Itstarted to rain : in my

opinion, a very characteristic thing in this country. So I thought: finally I’ve arrived in Ireland.

O ne of the main consequencesof the current recession is thatshoppers have become much

more discerning in their search forquality and value. The search for thismuch sought after value has meantthat retailers have been forced to adapt to suit the shoppers requirements.

Just how accessible areour public representa-tives? Do you know thenames of the Countycouncillors and Daildeputies in your area?Would you be in a posi-tion to contact them, ifrequired to do so?Every four years or there-abouts, people all overthe country set about thearduous task of electingour public representa-tives. These generally fallinto the categories ofcounty councillors andDail deputies, who arethere to represent us in atlocal level in the case ofcouncillors, and atnational level in the caseof Dail deputies. In total, there are 24 elected coun-cillors to sit on the countycouncil, plus another nineelected members ofBalbriggan Town Council. There are four elected TDsin the Dublin Northconstituency and anotherfour in Dublin West, towhich a large portion ofSwords is attached.Further to this, there arethree TDs from DublinNorth East, whichincludes a large portion ofPortmarnock residents. This indicates just howwell represented we are -but are we really? These people are electedto ensure that our issuesand concerns are beingattended to. They aretasked with making surethat we are aware of thedecisions being made inthe Dail and the councilchamber that will impacton our daily lives. Thesecan range from the main-tenance of publicservices, like transport, upkeep of local areas andmaking sure that the areais serviced to the highestpossible level. Our ownpersonal problems can beaired in clinics, which areusually conducted regu-larly by our TDs andCouncillors. The recent pre-electionpromises filled the air andnothing was beyond thecapability of the candi-dates. They wereprepared to take the starsdown from the sky for us,in return for our preciousvote. Now that the elec-tion has been won andlost, some of the victorsseem to have taken to thehills. Constituents find it

hard to contact them.Politicians who areserious about repre-senting their constituentsare always easy to find. They display their names, addresses and contactdetails in media outletsand billboards. Theybecome immediatelyidentifiable and becomethe ‘to go to person’ inthe event of having yourgrievances and concernsaired and dealt with. Local councillors, in themain, are hard workingand eager to help, butthere are a few who areinclined to hide and hangonto the coat tails ofmore senior politicians.Local residents couldn’tbe blamed for believingthat once they havesecured your vote, theyhave very little to offerthe community by way ofinitiatives and makingthemselves visible andavailable to their commu-nities.In sharp contrast to therun up to the last elec-tion, when politicians ofall persuasions swarmedall over the region, realityis somewhat different. They made sure thatevery door was knocked

on and each problem wastaken on board, with theensuing promise ofimmediate resolution andgenuine concern. Theyknew the first names ofeveryone and the wellbeing our your dearly, recently departed fatherwas enquired about. Oh, if that could onlycontinue, what a worldwe would live in!. Alas,

the willingness of ourelected representatives tovisit areas of previouslybroken promises is sorelylimited and we are leftwith just a few, genuineand concerned politicianswho are willing and readyto be identified and facethe task to which theywere elected in the firstplace - to serve thepeople.

Let The Light InSince we can never be certain of when the sun will shine, we should at least take advantage ofthose bright evenings while we still have them. It’s as simple as changing those curtains. Forgetabout those dark heavy drapes; instead think light, translucent curtains that will let the sun andlight breezes into your home. A light airy curtain can transform your home! Just think of all the extrasunlight and those lovely summer breezes blowing a breath of fresh air into your home.

Spruce It UpWith FlowersI say this time and time again, but one of theeasiest and most cost effective ways to make animpact is with the addition of fresh flowers. Irecommend fresh cut, brightly coloured flowerseither from your own garden (if you happen to beso lucky) or from the local florist. Place them in alight and understated vase; avoid heavy, dark orbulky vases and let the flowers take centrestage. Placement should be casual and ontable/counter tops to ensure the flowers arealways visible. Consider the foyer, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom as prime locations.

Get A Helping HandGet your little ones(and big ones if theycan be persuaded) tolend a hand duringtheir summer break, but make it fun forthem. In children’srooms have young-sters write poems andcolour pictures, thencreate a collage onposter or bulletin

boards that they canproudly hang in theirroom as their ownway of welcomingsummertime.

ShinyWindowsNever underestimatethe importance ofcleaning windows. Most people only givethem a thoroughcleaning (outside andin) once or twice a yearbut try to do it moreoften, especially in thesummer. It willinstantly brighten anyroom. Minimise clutter.Objects that addwarmth and cozinessin the winter can looktoo heavy in thesummer. Pack up a fewitems and give theremaining itemsbreathing room.Editing excess objectscan have an upliftingeffect on a room, andfewer objects takingup space means fewerobjects to collect dust.

Walking into the Carnegie Library on North Street, Swords tomeet with Bernadette Marks, is like stepping back in time.Bernadette runs the Swords Heritage Centre and FingalGenealogy Project from the historic building. While it’s regret-table that the 1908 structure no longer houses a library, it stillmaintains much of its grace and elegance, and is a perfectsetting for Bernadette’s work, which she undertakes withGeraldine McGovern. They provide anonline genealogical research facilitycovering all of North County Dublin, which is part of a nationwide network ofgenealogy centres. They also run themuseum housing many local artefactsfor the Swords Historical Society.“We started looking for a place for alocal museum in 1986 and initially wewere given one room in this building,” Bernadette explains.Having lived all her life in Swords, Bernadette had ‘lots of stuff’in her own home which she moved down to the museum. “Weopened every Sunday initially and as people called in, theystarted to donate items of interest and it kind of grew fromthere,” says Bernadette. We now open weekdays from 1pm.until 4.30 pm. The genealogical side ofBernadette’s work began in1988 as projects of this naturewere springing up all over thecountry. “Through a FAS initia-tive, where I trained as a super-visor, we got some youngpeople to computerise parishrecords and it’s fairly busy nowwith people tracing theirroots.” She obviously relishesthis aspect of her job whichhas changed over time. “When I started first, I wasposting letters to Americaeveryday but now it’s mostlydone by email which is veryhandy.” Visitors to the centreare always welcome and onesuch caller from Australia, wholives in Kuwait, was helped byBernadette to trace his grandmother who came from Kinsealy.“We found this out in about three quarters of an hour, whichwas great but sometimes it can take a lot longer,” she explains. It’s surprising to learn that Bernadette was initially reticentwhen asked to attend the first meeting of Swords HistoricalSociety back in 1982. “This guy from Roscommon who knew mymother asked me to come along and I said ‘ah no, no, no.’Anyway, he persuaded me and I ended up being elected secre-tary of the society on the night,” Bernadette laughs. She had no idea at the time how her attendance at that inau-gural meeting would change her life. Neither did she realisehow much of an impact her childhood had on her. “I was rearedwith adults. My father died when I was six months old and I wasreared by my mother and granny. They were always talking andin those times people would just call in to the house. Mymother, who was from Skerries would be saying to me ‘go outand play’ but of course I didn’t and later on in life I discovered Ihad all this stuff in my head,” she explains. While loving the stories she learnt at home, Bernadette recalls“walking to school and coming out the end of Chapel Lane andlooking down the street and it being miserable looking. I neverremember it being sunny, but maybe that’s because I hatedgoing to school,” she laughs. Despite this reticence,Bernadette joined her friend, Bernie Troy at the tech in Swordsand completed her Inter Cert there under the guidance of herenthusiastic teacher, Sheila Duggan. “She had us doing dramain Irish and we were hawked into the Olympia to take part in a

school’s drama festival, winning it twice.” On leaving school,Bernadette began working in an employment agency in DublinCity Centre and continued in this role until the 1980s when shecompleted the FAS Supervisory Course on genealogy. Shesubsequently completed a Diploma in Local History in

Maynooth 12 years ago. “It taughtme how to research properly andwrite up my findings.” Her enthusiasm for her work hasled Bernadette to visit schools inthe area engaging students withtheir own local history. She haslots of stories to tell, many goingbeyond local events, such as the

fact her father fought in the 1916 Rising. She appears some-what bemused that people enjoy listening to her so much, butis happy to attend events such as a recent cultural night run byFingal Heritage Network at Luttrelstown Golf Club, and tell herstory if people want to hear it. The number of projects Bernadette has become involved with

in the past 30 years or so isstaggering. In 1986 she wrote‘Rambles through Swords’which included a video ofBernadette walking around thetown pointing out places ofinterest. “I hope to do anotherone this year, 25 years latershowing all the changes inSwords.” In August 2004,following two years ofresearch, she wrote ‘A HardAuld Station’, a book thatexamines the history of thepeople who donated theStations of the Cross in St.Colmcille’s Church, somedating as far back as 1881.Bernadette describes herinterest in the people namedon the plaques as going backto her childhood. “I was

always a dreamer…I’d sit in the Church with my mother andwonder who the people were.” With the support of theCouncil she also publishes the annual Swords Voices booklet, where local stories and memories are recorded for posterity.Swords has changed dramatically since Bernadette’s child-hood and she is largely positive about these changes. “I loveto come down the town and see all the people around, I meanyears ago you only saw lots of people around if you went toDublin. I live close to the Pavilions and it’s great, I don’t reallyhave to go into town to shop anymore.” As a child, Bernadette couldn’t have imagined how herimmersion in adult conversation with strong matriarchalwomen would have a major impact on the direction of her life. Her memories are vivid and her interest in genealogicalresearch infectious. “I do my job because I love it,” she says. Together with Geraldine, Bernadette is currently preparing forthe forthcoming annual Swords Heritage Week. They inviteentries of about 1,500 words to their various writing competi-tions and these may be works of fact, fantasy, fiction orpoetry. There is a special prize donated by Mary McCormackin memory of her mother, Bridget Browne, entitled ‘WhatSwords Means to Me,’ and Bernadette would love to seepeople send in their musings before 31st July to [email protected]. Judging by last year’s prize giving event inThe Carnegie Court Hotel, the competition is as popular nowas it was when initiated in 1987
