NORTH EAST WEEKLY Police Scotland began a process of consultation on 10th December 2014 to consider proposals from the

Divisional Commanders in the North East to restructure local policing in the Aberdeen City and

Aberdeenshire and Moray local policing areas.

The proposal’s key aims were to sustainably strengthen local policing in those areas and increase consistency

in the provision of the service we provide to those communities.

At the outset of this process, we highlighted the importance of consulting with the community, as well as

engaging with staff and our external partners to test locally that the benefits proposed were both supported and

understood.

ACC Campbell Thomson, who is responsible for the delivery of Local Policing in the North said:

"Our extensive consultation has taken many forms, including engaging with all locally elected representatives,

community councils and with Community Planning, as well as other key partners and internal staff focus

groups.

Very useful feedback has been received and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has

engaged with us.

"Having reached the end of that consultation phase, the majority of feedback supports our assessment that the

proposals present an opportunity to strengthen local policing in these areas.

"Given our continuing commitment to fully understand, listen and respond to the feedback from communities,

the Divisional Commanders involved would like to continue their consultation on a small number of local

issues to ensure that any future decisions are based on the strongest possible foundation."

NFU Scotland is deeply disap-

pointed at Europe’s decision to

allow producers in those Member

States that have exceeded their

milk quota to pay-up their su-

perlevy fines interest-free over

three years. With the milk quota

regime closing at the end of this

month, the Union believes this

last minute change to the rules

hands an advantage to nations

that have over-produced in

2014/15, exacerbated the milk

price crisis across Europe and

sends a signal to European pro-

ducers to ‘turn-on-the-tap’ in the

coming weeks, creating problems

in the vital spring flush period.

NFU Scotland’s Milk Committee

Chairman, Graeme Kilpatrick

said:“The vote today to allow

dairy farmers in over-producing

nations to repay the milk

superlevy over three years will go

down badly with Scottish dairy

producers.

“This last-minute change to the

quota rules – only weeks before

the regime ends – hands an

advantage to producers in some

member states, some of whom

have repeatedly broken quota

limits over the years.

“All European milk producers

were aware that quotas were

coming to an end but that the

usual levy system would operate

if member state quota limits were

breached. That has now changed.

“We, together with others, had

suggested ways in which the su-

perlevy collected this year could

have been used to support the

entire milk industry in this diffi-

cult year through export refunds

and private storage aid. These

ideas were rejected by the

Commission on the grounds that

the money to be collected had

already been allocated in other

spending areas. Worryingly,

allowing European farmers to

repay the milk super levy over

three years means we can antici-

pate that production which had

been pulled back through the

threat of the superlevy will again

be unleashed in the last few

weeks of the scheme.

“There will be dairy farmers in

over-producing nations who will

now take their foot off the brake

and this vote will see milk move

straight back into the supply

chain to exacerbate the spring

flush production across Europe”.

SYLVIA HANGS UP HER PRUNERS

Sylvia Tait’s ambition to own a

flower shop, which

blossomed in her own garage

more than 20 years ago and

eventually led to her own business

premises, has come to an end.

Peterhead’s Sylvia has announced

she is hanging up her pruners on

April 1 to spend more time with

her family.

Road will shut its doors for good

after providing countless floral

arrangements for weddings,

funerals and general gifts of love

and appreciation.

In the meantime, she’s offering

great discounts of 50 % off

everything and 30% for garden

ornaments in her closing down

sale.

Sylvia would also like to thank

her customers, staff and

suppliers for their unending, loyal

support during those decades.

“They’ve been amazing,” she told

the North East Weekly. “The

business would not have thrived

without everyones’ dedication. I

can’t thank them enough for

everything they have done for

me.”

Sylvia, who said her love of

flowers led to her career choice, is

retiring early to spend more time

with her family, especially her

grandchildren.

During those 20 years, she said

she’s likely arranged flowers for

hundreds of happy and some not-

so-happy events in Peterhead and

the surrounding area.

She operated out of her garage for

two years before securing her

current shop.

“Oh jings, I’ve lost count of the

number of weddings and funer-

als—they were constant. The prep-

aration was a lot of work, but it

was all part of the job which I real-

ly enjoyed.”

The business has been sold to local

folk, she said.

Being a popular florist has its good

points and not so good, she added.

“We’ve sometimes had a laugh and

experienced some serious times,

it’s been a mixture. You always

had to take it as it came along.”

Sylvia Tait was arranging a bouquet of flowers when the North East Weekly visited

her shop in Clerkhill on Friday. She has announced she is retiring and closing the

shop on April 1 after more than 20 years in business. She is having a closing down

sale.

Police Scotland would like to remind members of the public to think about the security of their sheds

following a spate of break-ins in Aberdeen. A number of sheds have been targeted across the city including in

Seaton, Bridge of Dee and Hilton in the last three weeks.

PC Bob McKinney said: "Police Scotland would like to remind householders to, wherever possible, fit good

quality locks or padlocks to shed doors.

"When fitting padlocks and hasps on the outside of the shed; ideally the hasp should have covered or have non

-returnable screws or bolts. Padlocks should be made of hardened steel with a ‘closed shackle’ which makes it

more difficult to insert bolt cutters into the shackle to cut it.

"Also, cover the shed window with a screen such as a net curtain to prevent opportunistic thieves from

"window shopping" or, better still, fit the window with an internal grille bolted to the window frame.

"It may also be worth considering fitting a shed alarm. These are battery operated stand-alone devices which

are remotely set by use of a

key fob and cost around £10.

They can be bought at many

reputable DIY store.

"Lastly, where possible, we

would suggest fitting a Passive

Infra-Red activated floodlight

overlooking the shed, to deter

the thieves and draw peoples'

attention if the light is

activated. Further advice on

how to keep property safe can

be obtained by calling the

Crime Reduction Unit on the

Police Scotland non-

emergency number of 101 and

we'd be pleased to help."
