North Goa Vs South Goa

The tiny Indian state Goa, lying on the western coast is the one which boasts of immense natural beauty and jovial atmosphere, which seems more than inviting to

tourists planning for a fun filled vacation. It has a host of attractive places and activities

to offer to tourists which make it an irresistible treat for vacationers.

Every part of Goa seems to be blessed with immense beauty and if you are the one who

want to choose the better part of Goa to visit, then it will be a really difficult task, asNorth Goa and South Goa are both equally beautiful in their own aspects. Here are somepoints of comparison of North Goa and South Goa which will make the reader realize that

which part is the one matching his vacationing temperament.

North Goa Vs South Goa

Although Goa is not a very huge place, when it comes to differences in both the parts of Goa you'll see that the difference is just like staying in two different countries. If you arein Goa and trying out Northern part first, then there are lots of happening things to do.North Goa is a place which is full of life. The chic restaurants, invigorating nightlife, mesmerizing churches, and the very picturesque beaches of the place make it a placevery popular amongst the fun loving crowd of Goa.

In the northern part of Goa, one can spot numerous British tourists having a gala time

engaging in the exciting activities that are encouraged here. When looking for the mostpopular place of North Goa, then a name unparalleled is Calangute, with the popularBaga Beach to its south making a center for the party animals. As we move a little

towards the north of Calangute, we'll come across Candolim, which is a place famous forthe people who love to be in peace. Some of the beaches which one can check out whiletravelling in North Goa are Dona Paula Beach, Anjuna Beach, Sinquerim Beach, BagaBeach, and Vagator Beach. Other places to see here are Tiracol Church, Chapora fort,Fort Aguada, The chapel of St. Anthony, Anjuna market, Mapusa Friday Market, etc.Rave parties, water sports, carnivals, shopping from the local bazaars and shacks, etc.,are some other interesting activities to enjoy in the northern part of Goa.

As one moves towards the south of Goa, a vast difference can be seen. This area of Goa

is seen to be less congested, but instead adorning the city with the classiestconstructions. Here the best of five star hotels, restaurants, and resorts are located. It is

speckled with a few beaches which are pristine and exotic. Some of the beaches of southGoa are Palolem Beach, Colva Beach, Betul Beach, Benaulim Beach, and Majorda beach.Apart from the beaches of South Goa, other attractions which one can check out areChandor Village, Catigao Wildlife Sanctuary, and Church of The Holy Spirit.

So if you are in Goa, then get ready for two wonderful experiences on a single trip.Conclusively, one can say that there is no comparison of the regions of Goa, as both of them are unique in their very own ways. Goa is called one of the best holidaydestinations because of the collective presence of these two sections.

“   North v South - my thoughts & trip report! ”   10 April 2007, 0:52

Destination Expert

for Goa

Just having returned from a wonderful fortnight in the North, thought I would add a few thoughts

about the differences having experienced both North and South now.

We went to Cavelossim last year around the same time and loved it. We came back completelychilled after a very relaxing holiday. Being my first time I was a bit wary of lots of things - thebeachsellers, the shop keepers 'just look - looking is free' etc, etc, and didn't venture out of our

hotel anywhere near as much as we should have so the holiday was very much 'hotel based'.

Now, to the North. What a difference! We went with friends who are Goa veterans and know the

North like the back of their hands so, tagging behind my friend through the markets (Anjuna andMackies) and picking up her tricks of the trade with the haggling, I gradually became moreconfident with the whole bartering thing and ended up loving it. Got some great bargains at bothAnjuna and Mackies. Would have been ripped off big time had it not been for my friend butknowing how to do it now, I feel confident that I could do it alone without my friend as back-up.

The 'manic-ness' for want of a better word of  Calangute was such an eye-opener - 'beeb, toot-toot'constantly and crossing the road safely was a skill I failed to master! I could walk in and out of

shops and past stalls and browse and say no and walk away without feeling bad. The people weregreat and so friendly - I definitely saw more of Goa than the first time - personally for me, the firsttime was a bit of a learning curve as lovely as it was. We ate at many different restaurants never

having a bad meal even for a fussy eater like myself!

We went on Jake the Snake's crocodile trip - what an experience that was! I spent most of thetime cowering over the other side of the boat when it tipped to one side when everyone spotted acroc and dived across for the photo opportunity! A crew member lost his stick and went on thebank to get it, got stuck in the mud and Jake had to rescue him and all the time there was a 4metre croc just inches away. I nearly 'pooped' myself when the croc suddenly ran out of the bush, slid down the bank and under the boat, my husband and friends coming about 4 feet away from it!For entertainment value I'd give it 10/10 but it could have turned out very nasty!

Went on the dolphin cruise at Coco beach - the beach was lovely and safe for swimming but thecruise wasn't up to much in my opinion. We did see a few dolphins though. Done the spiceplantation and elephant ride again which was good and the churches and temples of Old Goa.

Went to Sinquerim beach most days, our husbands doing jet-skiing, boogie-boarding and fishing.Used the Big Blue shack (third along - they all seem to be called Big Blue), great food, service and

Page 3: North Goa vs South Goa

7/30/2019 North Goa vs South Goa

prices. Went to Vagator another day - great to see the faces in the rocks and cows roaming thebeach! Didn't like the packs of dogs though me being a 'wuss' when it comes to dogs.

Went to Baga a couple of nights but wasn't keen on that and never went to Baga beach during theday. Went to Calangute most nights, enjoyed Roma (Italian), East meets West (great food and

setting), Taste of India, Chinese Garden, (opposite Babutes), Souza Lobo (on the beach) andPescado's to name a few. Ended up at Babutes on Top most nights for a few cocktails!

So, in summary - do I prefer North or South? I would have to say North as I saw alot more andthere's alot more going on. Going with good and experienced friends obviously made a differencebut for a livilier holiday I would say North.

Hope I haven't gone on too much and hope you enjoyed reading my report. x

Whatever your style may be you can certainly find activities to entertain while visiting Goa; one of

our  top travel destinations. Where they cater to both the all inclusive crowd who want even their

unrealized desires to be met and the crowd with simpler tastes who are happy with just a beer (or

something a little less encouraged in the United States) and loud throbbing trance music pulsating out

over the Arabian Sea from a beach hut, as their electronic answer to the oceans waves.

Your best bet for finding a good party is to hang out around whatever appears to be the most popular

beach shack of the season, and chat up the locals (but be wary of getting lifts to unknown venues with

strangers).

Get Help Planning Your Trip

Clubs and Bars

Club Cubana

This amazing club with an outdoor dance floor next to their pool looks like a cross between a trendy Vegas

night club and a Carribean resort, but it is an entirely different animal. The music is great, and unlike clubs in

Vegas, the pool is open all night!

Nine Bar

Located at the top of a hill overlooking Vagator Beach this is a perfect spot for those looking for a psychedelic

experience to watch the sunset to the tune of trance music. Also a great place to start for those planning on

doing a night of club hopping.Kamaki

Located on Tito’s ln. Kamaki is a laid back beach club atmosphere with cheep beer and good (laid back) music

24 hours a day.

Psychedelic Journeys

Goa has become famous for their rave parties. They are not officially organized events, however if you want to

go all that you need to do is ask around in the evening, (the locations are not disclosed too early so that the

police have less of a chance of finding and harassing ravers) many of the locals will know where it is and be

happy to point you in the right direction. If you do one thing in Goa, the raves on the beach are likely to be the

cheapest and most memorable option.

Mambo's

Page 8: North Goa vs South Goa

7/30/2019 North Goa vs South Goa

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/north-goa-vs-south-goa 8/23

Mambo’s is an open air bar, which plays mostly American 80s rock, making it a nice place to take a break from

trance music. Guys need to have a girl with them in order to get in, so girls can dance here with little

harassment, and the guys who do get in have a great time.

Resorts

Cavala

Cavala is one of the hottest resorts overlooking the beach. Come an enjoy a tasty drink made with Feni, a

delicious liquor made from the almond apples, the official drink of Goa.

Equinox

Equinox is a top notch restaurant, representative of Goa. The restaurant features a quiet dining room inside, aswell as rooftop dining with a view. A good place to dine for western tourists because the staff speaks great

English and are happy to help you with directions or ideas for your evening plans.

The Banyan Tree

This excellent restaurant is located under an ancient landmark banyan tree located in the Taj Holiday

Village. Cuisine is delicious top quality Thai food prepared by exceptional chefs. The atmosphere is peaceful

between the serene fish pond and the 300 year old tree which creates the feel of a natural wall.

The Copper Bowl

This traditionally elegant restaurant set under a pavilion in the open air serves traditional Indian food. The food

is cooked and served in copper pots and bowls hence the name The Copper Bowl.

Martin's Corner

Starting as a very small restaurant that only served a few locals Martin’s Corner has grown into a full sized

restaurant due to the popularity and quality of their food.

The Plantain Leaf

A good vegetarian restaurant with a view, have a seat and munch on some dosas while you sip a beer and watch

the tourists pass by on the beach below.

Souza Lobo

Page 9: North Goa vs South Goa

7/30/2019 North Goa vs South Goa

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/north-goa-vs-south-goa 9/23

A family owned business for over seventy years, Souza Lobo has some of the best food you can find. The

owner, Jude Lobo is the fourth generation of the Lobo family to run this restaurant. Come try the excellent sea

food like the lobster thermador, or the crab xacuti.

Britto

Good food and cold beer at cheap prices, over looking the Arabian Sea. Entrees cost around Rs 80-190, or

about $2 -$5 US. At those prices you will have plenty of cash left over for dancing (or drinking) the night away.

Day Trips in Goa

Anjuna

Like all of Goa, Anjuna was long held by the Portuguese. Anjuna became hippy central for hippies traveling to

India. It has also been described as the home and capital of trance music, having an influence on many DJs inthe genre of music. However for the average tourist the biggest draw is the flea market on the beach on

Wednesdays, where you never know what you’re going to find.

Chandor

Nestled on the banks of the river Kushavati, Chandor is a more quiet alternative for spending a day, compared

with the action and excitement of the main Goa party district along the Arabian Sea.

Colva

One of the main “resort beaches” in Goa, Colva is a beautiful white sand beach lined with many hotels of

varying prices and amenities. If you want a room on the beach for cheap, or are willing to pay a little more, for

a little better room this is a good place to stay.

Old Goa

Old Goa was the capital of the portion of India dominated by the Portuguese in the 15th century, until they fled

the area to escape a plague epidemic in the 1800s. The area contains many of the original buildings constructed

with beautiful artistic architecture.

Panaji

Panaji is the current state capital of Goa, moved from Old Goa in 1843 when the Portuguese fled the original

sight to escape a plague epidemic. Panaji is unusually quiet and relaxed for a state capital, especially compared

with the jumpin nature of the sea side areas of North Goa.Ponda's temples

Page 10: North Goa vs South Goa

7/30/2019 North Goa vs South Goa

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/north-goa-vs-south-goa 10/23

A great day trip stop, Ponda is the sight of many famous temples, with over fifteen in the area. To get to Ponda

you have to pass through Old Goa, making it a great opportunity to see both areas in the same day. While in the

Ponda area, another great spot to check out are the Buddhist Caves.

Bamboo Huts in Goa

The bamboo huts in Goa are known as cocohuts, and they has been the traditional building construction style for

as far back as records go. Some of the resorts in the area feature huts as rooms for customers, however these

have been greatly modernized over their humble origins (i.e. indoor plumbing and tile floors).

Avalon Inn

The accommodations are simple in this hostel, (thatch huts with no air conditioning) however the prices are very

low, about $22 US currency a night for a private room with a double bed.

Villa Anjuna

Villa Anjuna offers comfortable rooms, which are a bit pricey by Goan standards, however still cheap compared

with U.S. prices. Located near some of the hottest clubs in Goa, this is a great place to stay, however be warned

if you plan to hotel hop that you must stay a minimum of three days to book a room here.

Agonda Beach Huts

The Agonda Beach huts look like a Tahitian resort, located right on beautiful, tranquil, and practically

unpopulated Agonda beach, these bamboo and thatch huts are comfortable and include personal bathrooms

(attached) with running water.

Shangrila Beach Hotel Goa

Located about a block from beautiful Majorda beach in Goa Shangrila Beach Hotel is trueley a paradise, the

rooms are moderately priced for Goa (about $32 American for a deluxe air conditioned room).

Given the range of budget accommodation, few people travel with their own tent. An increasing phenomenon

though (and a far cry from the triangular tents of yesteryear) is the organized camp of tepee-style tents, such as

Bai Tereza Beach Camp at Coco Beach, where the guests gather around a bonfire at night.

There are a great number of campsites on any beach. Your best bet is to look around and find one that has

available space where you feel comfortable. All sites have bare bones amenities.

2. Anjuna Flea Market

Sharell Cook

The Anjuna flea market is held every Wednesday from morning until evening, except during the monsoon season, on the

southern end of Anjuna Beach. The market has has exploded in size and attracts people from all over Goa. It's now got over

500 stalls, and is still growing. You'll find a huge assortment of goods there, but make sure you bargain. After a day of

shopping til you drop, head over to Curly's beach shack and take in the sunset scene there.

If one market isn't enough for you, the Saturday night market in Arpora (not far from Calangute Beach) is also worth

checking out. It offers entertainment, including live music, as well as an eclectic range of food.

3. Old Goa

Once the magnificant Portuguese capital of Goa India, these days all that remains of Old Goa is a handful of imposing

churches and cathedrals. They are amongst the largest in Asia though. Some of the buildings have now become

archeological museums, and provide a fascinating display of Goa's history.

One of the most interesting buildings in Old Goa is the Convent and Church of Saint Francis of Assisi, built in 1521. Just

opposite is the Basilica of Bom Jesus, which contains the preserved remains of the body of Saint Frances Xavier, a revered

missionary and the patron saint of Goa. The body is shown to the public every 10 years, with the next exhibition due in

2014.

Old Goa is situated not far from Panaji, Goa's current capital.

4. Wildlife Sanctuaries

Goa India isn't just all about beaches and churches. The state's location along the mountainous Western Ghats is home to an

array of birds and animals. Around 20% of Goa consists of wildlife sanctuaries. They're open all year round, although

October to March are the best months to visit.

The two main sanctuaries are Bhagwan Mahvir (of which Mollem National Park is a part) and Cotigao. On the fringe of the

Mollem National Park you'll find the imposing Dudhsagar Falls, where the water rages down from a huge height during and

just after the monsoon season. Accommodations, provided by the Goa Forest Department, are available at both sanctuaries.

For a very eco-friendly stay, try a mud hut at the Shanti Nature Resort in Mollem National Park.

5. Spice Plantations

www.flickr.com user RobRyb

Another highlight of a trip to Goa India is the spice plantations around Ponda. Goa's tropical climate and dense forests makes

it an ideal place to grow spices. The spice farms are open to visitors. You can take a guided tour, enjoy the picturesque

scenery, and finish with a spicy lunch.

One of the most acclaimed spice plantations in Goa is the Savoi Plantation, reached by an enchanting drive through dense

jungles and hills from Ponda. Others include the Sahakari Spice Farm, Pascol Spice Village, Abyss, and the Tropical Spice

Plantation. Accommodations, and other activities such as elephant or boat rides, are offered at many of the farms.

A Goan at heart I could not resist but blog about what an Indian traveler should look out for in this

wonderful but small place. Goa is a very beautiful place. It has beaches and churches and lots of sun

n sand that can be a lot of fun all round the year. The best time in the year to visit Goa is between

October and March. Over the Christmas week Goa is at its best.

Even if you are not going there in the prime foreign tourist season, you will find a lot of Indian tourist

any time of the year.

Besides playing on the superb beaches of Goa and enjoying the cool waters in the Sea, you can do a

lot with your time in Goa.

Remember the basic difference between heat in other parts of the world and humidity in Goa or

Bombay is a bucket full of perspiration. The best way to tackle it is to drink a lot of liquids and stay

cool.

Goa is not really a good place for shopping. Food too is a little expensive but incase you plan to haveyour eating habits localized, the food suddenly becomes reasonable.

Transportation is another huge hassle in case you do not have a vehicle. Hiring bikes is cheap and

most sensible if you know to ride one. If you don’t know how to ride a bike, smart young pilots with

bikes are available on most street corners. They are reasonable but do not forget to bargain. If you

are in a group, then you should try and hire a car for a day long North/ South Goa tour.

If you plan to spend a day at a beach and do not want any one to be between you and nature,

Paulolim to the extreme south or Arambol to the extreme North are the two options. A word of

caution: there are no good eating joints here so carry your supplies.

The favorite location that now a days most youngsters prefer to stay at is Baga Beach in North Goa.

Baga is nice, clean, and full of tourist all year round. The make shift shacks serve good food. What

makes it the best place to stay is the hospitality doled out by the Goan’s in this area. Sweet and

simple fisher folk ready to serve at a reasonable price.

My favorite places in Goa:

North Goa:

Page 20: North Goa vs South Goa

Fort Aguada: If you happen to stand at some of the right spots the view is better than the best places

you have ever seen, Hook up with a local for these spots. Please don’t waste your time seeing the

obvious. The fort and the light house is what most tourists try to capture on camera. Trust me if you

happen to notice what I have seen from here you will be amazed at the foolishness of most tourist

guides in not showing you those places.

Just remembered! There are these kids who earn their living by showing you things using binoculars,

ask them to show you around. If you are lucky, u will see what I have seen.

The Flea Market at Anjuna Beach: Bargain, bargain n still bargain…! The final price will leave you

satisfied. If some thing is quoted at 450, ask for it at 45. You might just get it at 50!

Calangute Beach: World famous… just like Hyderabad’s biryani! Hope you do not have the same

opinion about Calangute as I have about this biryani.

Candolim Beach: I don’t think you would visit this place coz it’s not on any tourist map. See they

don’t think the need to disturb the King of Goa for measly tourist. You got it right that’s my village n

guess my hotel has the world largest swimming pool… the Arabian Sea. …. Hahahah

Just kidding… but yes the beach is beautiful n worth going in the evenings. If you plan to visit my

place do tell me I don’t promise that you will be treated like a King’s guest coz I m not a king but I m

sure u will be welcome.

Mapusa (pronounced as Mapsa): The whole of north Goa is predominantly occupied by fisher folk.

Mapusa is their market. Nothing to see in the city but just incase u plan to buy stuff Friday is the

market day. Lots of Beach ware can be purchased at through away prices.

Nice places to eat in north Goa are Tito’s in Baga, SozaLobo’s in Calangute, The Mango Tree and

Bob’s inn in Candolim. Don’t forget to have an ice-cream at Hanuman Soda in Mapusa, don’t go by

the name, the place is fun n most locals know where it is.

South Goa:

Panjim city: It has been developed like most well planned cities. It is the Capital of the real small

state of Goa so most administrative offices are here. Not much to see here. You may find many of

the buildings familiar if you are a regular with the films. Many Hindi films shoot songs in Goa.

Miramar Beach: It is a small beach and is actually a bank to the river Mandovi. Its claim to fame is

that it is the poshest area in Goa. A nice restaurant for burgers and pizzas kind of stuff is the high

light of this place…(I forget its name but its in the premises of the Goa Tourism Development

Corporation)

Dona-Paula: Nice place to visit in the evening. Freak your self on the scooter boats. Great place to

buy T shirts, shorts and real short skirts. It’s some place where I get my size…hahahahahah…

Page 21: North Goa vs South Goa

Old Goa: The churches are famous for a lot of things including the relics of St. Francis Xavier.

However I love to spend time in the chapel of the growing cross which is placed in the Se Cathedral.

If you have a wish (a small one) and its not getting fulfilled, walk up to the cross, push ur fingers

through the back of the wooden frame until u happen to touch the bark like façade of the real cross

and ….make a wish… If done with faith in the heart, it comes true. It worked for me on more

occasions than one. So try your luck too.

Kolva beach: It is another of Goa’s very beautiful beaches. The specialty here is ‘White Sand.’ Yes the

sand is more silverish in colour and fine. Get a bag full of this sand back home to brush your teeth

with. Pepsodent and Colgate pick up all the calcium from the same beach stretch. Not kidding but

both have factories just round the corner on this beach. It is Goa’s longest beach.

Madgaon or Margaon city: It’s the unplanned city of Goa. Recent developments in trying to plan it

out have taken both the bus stand and the Railway station out of the city. So now the locals keep

complaining, ‘they have taken the city out of our city.’ There is nothing much to see in the city butsome good places to eat.

Nice places to eat in South Goa Godino’s in Panjim city, Mum’s kitchen near Miramar, and Longinos’s

in Margaon (don’t forget to eat the caramel custard here).

I am sorry to over load you with all the info … but kya kare contol he nai hota…. Hahaha … very

passionate about my Bombay and My Goa u c….
