Year 12 Art Finale
Issue 17
This year, the 7 students of Ms West’s grade 12 class put on a stunning show of theirs and the Visual Arts in Practice classes’ artworks at the Mackay Jubilee Community Centre. The opening on Tuesday the 29th of October drew a wonderful and appreciative crowd. Works were judged by Artspace Director, Tracey Heathwood and prizes were generously donated by Brad Short of Milton House, Oxlades Art Supplies and School Art Supplies, both from Brisbane. The Encouragement Award recipients were Althea Ariza, with Philipino Staple, Sam Coad’s “Still Life with Cow Skulls”, Madeline Gravino and Two Faced and Gypsee Russell’s “Passione 1 -4”.
Although there could only be a few awardees, the quality of work was outstanding, giving the judge a very hard job. Guests from Melbourne also commented on the quality of the show.
The North High Art Department is committed to getting students to produce work of a professional standard in both skill and presentation and it culminates annually with this exhibition. Big props to Trent Hempson’s very versatile imagery which was used in the promotion of the show as well being used in the upcoming Seniors Magazine and Graduation Night Booklet Cover.
Thank you to everyone involved.

FURTHER EISTEDDFOD CONGRATULATIONS
A massive congratulations to all members of our vocal groups who performed so superbly in the recent Mackay Eisteddfod. Our full choir won both their major secondary choral sections; our folk group won the secondary folk song section and our
show choir members were placed third in their section. As a result, our school was named as the winner of the Secondary School Choral Championship, which is a really fantastic effort. Sincere thanks to Mrs Horton, Mrs George and Mrs Power for
all their hard work in training and polishing all the performances.
What wonderful results our school achieved in all of the secondary instrumental and choral sections in the eisteddfod! It is
indeed a great tribute to our talented, committed performing arts students and staff and a great affirmation of the high standards we aspire to in our school.
AWARDS NIGHT
It was a great thrill to see so many of our performing arts students collecting academic and cultural awards at our annual
Awards Night Ceremony last week. Congratulations to all award winners and a very special thank you to all the performing arts students in the marching band, drumline and vocal ensemble who provided the wonderful entertainment on the night.
Special mention must be made of Year 12 student, Mercedes Rees, who won the Karen Jacobsen trophy for the top cultural student; Emma Cameron who won the Concert Band award; Sofia Garcia who won the Crescendo award (the vocal group)
and Ella Sippel who was awarded the dramatic arts prize. All of these special awards were very well deserved –
congratulations!
PLANNING FOR 2020
At present the cultural calendar for next year is being finalised. Instrumental lessons will all begin in Week 3 and all ensembles (including the vocal group) will resume rehearsals in Week 4. For instrumental students, our Fanfare
performance in early June will be a particular goal. Also, our marching band has again been invited to the ANZAC State Parade in Brisbane and will be leaving for that engagement on Wednesday evening, April 22 and returning on Monday
morning, April 27.
FAREWELL TO OUR WONDERFUL YEAR 12 PERFORMING ARTS STUDENTS
As the school year quickly draws to a close, we sadly farewell all of our wonderful Year 12 performing arts students who have made an invaluable contribution to the cultural life of our school. A massive thank you to each and every one of you for your
dedication, your support and your enthusiasm. You have all been worthy role models for our younger students and leave very big shoes to fill.
Every good wish for the future – we look forward to hearing of your future success.

On Friday the 1st of November, some of our Year 11 and 12 CATT students were invited to take a tour of the new facility in
East Gordon Street called “Our Mates Place” prior to the Open Day on 23rd November. The facility provides a space for people aged 14 years and older with disabilities to access sessions with their peers in an inviting, supportive and safe setting.
It aims to provide participants with genuine learning and peer development opportunities as well as the choice to access several learning opportunities each day.
Some examples of the sessions on offer were:
Art / Drawing – which can then be displayed for sale in their Gallery
Woodwork
Computers, Photography and Virtual Reality
Cooking and Hospitality Skills
Music and Singing Classes / Karaoke
Gardening
Health and Beauty Room

Unique Directions
The activities on offer are driven by what participants want in order to develop
their skills. Skills development, independence, learning how to make decisions and be in control of our own lives are fostered through both formal and
informal learning opportunities. There are purpose built spaces for each activity and participants can nominate what activities they would like to participate in.
There’s even a ‘Chill Out Space’ for new people to hang out and just try the activities until they feel comfortable in the Centre.
Our students loved the inclusive environment and supportive staff. They were fantastic representatives of the school and participated fully in all the centre had
to offer displaying their many gifts and engaging in numerous incidental learning opportunities.

2019 is ending and so are our Z Club meetings for the year. It has been a busy time for all of the members as numerous projects were undertaken, both in and out of school. Not only were vital funds raised for the organisation, but some
wonderful bonding took place between our students from Year 7 to Year 12.
Last week, the Toiletries Drive collections, ‘Share the Dignity’, were packaged and ready for delivery to the Womens’ Shelter
and the Kaylan House. We hope that the items will be extremely beneficial to those in need. Thank you again to the North High families and staff who contributed so generously to the cause.
This year is a milestone for ZONTA. It was 100 years ago that a group of women decided to form a club to advocate,
empower and educate girls and women to create a better future for all. The club, ZONTA, is now a worldwide organisation working to improve the lives of girls and women.
Mrs Cooper and I would like to farewell our Senior students who have contributed their time and ideas during the year. We wish you all the very best for your future endeavours.
