Over the years, beach music has become synonymous with summertime fun. To those who know it best, it conjures up images of shag dancing, balmy summer nights, beach loafers and cotton sundresses. Resonating with people from all over the southeast, shag dancing and beach band filled evenings have become a rite of passage from youth to adulthood. A tradition in the south since the 1940’s, this mix of rhythm and blues, old time rock and roll, along with a touch of big band swing music has provided the backdrop for many fond memories amongst the people of North Carolina.

With its’ roots lying deep in the Carolinas, this tradition is alive and well here in Raleigh, NC. Just head over to North Hills on any Thursday night during the summer months. There you will find North Carolinians of every age, shagging the night away to the music of

legendary bands like the Embers, the Tams, and Band of Oz. Even though it’s not under the boardwalk, friends, families, and children alike head for Raleigh’s Midtown during this 20 week concert series. In its two year existence, the Midtown Beach Music Series has brought back to life that summertime fun, the tradition that has become legendary in the Carolinas.

Entering its third season, the Beach Music Series is back and better than ever. With an unparalleled band list, outdoor dance floor, and many memories to be made, mark your calendars now for the 2010 Midtown Music: Beach Music Series. Every Thursday night, beginning on April 15th and continuing through the end of August, the best beach bands in the region will be performing in the Commons from 6-9pm. One thing is for sure; we know that Raleigh loves beach music, because we were born with it in our bones!

At North Hills, you’ll find a walkable world of retail shopping bliss, fashion direct from New York and Paris, the best restaurants in the

Triangle, a multitude of corporate offices, Raleigh’s premier hotel, and a wealth of entertainment options including an outdoor concert series, a 16-screen cinema and a whole host of places to connect with friends.

The Midtown Farmers’ Market has become the hidden jewel in the North Hills community. With over 25 local vendors participating in the market every week, the ability to enjoy locally grown, sustainable produce is right at our fingertips. To stroll through the North Hills Commons on a Saturday evokes thoughts of a simpler, more quaint lifestyle than the one most of us live today. Not only do you find fresh meats of all kinds, cheeses, freshly cut flowers, and seasonal produce. The growers that come each week are ready to swap recipes, share cooking tips, and tip their hat as you go by. Along with the bevy of goods you find families and friends alike, out for a Saturday stroll, enjoying the bluegrass band and the sun shining down on the Commons.

The farmers have come from miles around, trucks loaded to the brim with ripened crops, meats, freshly baked breads and desserts, and crafts of all kinds. The Commons comes alive with the myriad of colorful tents that are popped up upon the arrival of each vendor. They eagerly anticipate their weekly regulars, who come by at just about the same time every week, hot on the trail of the seasonal produce. Along with the regulars come the the first-time visitors, who have yet to experience this farmers’ market. With the live music, cooking demonstrations, sampling, and helpful vendors, their trip to this farmers’ market is unlike any other.

The Midtown Farmers’ Market is entering its’ third season at North Hills. In addition to the Saturday Market, running from April to November in 2010, a weekday will be added to the market schedule. Thanks to the excitement and support surrounding this two year old market, our trusted vendors will be packing up their produce and heading for the Commons on Tuesdays beginning May 11th and continuing through September. Those who live, work, and play at North Hills during the week will be able to enjoy the same selection of local goods that weekend patrons have available to them.

Thanks to Duke Raleigh Hospital and their support of this community activity, we are looking forward to a successful 2010 season! For more information, please visit www.northhillsfarmersmarket.com

Beach Music Series. Midtown Farmers Market. Plein Air Art Competition. At Kane Realty, these events have become synonymous with Angela Slater. Entering her third event season, this Pittsburgh native has created and managed a calendar of over 200 event days a year at North Hills. Among her event production goals at North Hills, Angela is focused on securing strong and lasting partnerships with committed sponsors.

Hailing from Pittsburgh, PA along with her husband Brian, the Slaters •became snowbirds and relocated to Raleigh in 2006.

While still in college at the University of Pittsburgh, Angela started •and ran her own concert production company that brought regional and national entertainers to multiple venues throughout the city.

In her free time, Angela manages Raleigh based band Old Avenue, and •has recently joined the planning committees for the ACS Swing for the Cure golf fundraiser and Raleigh’s Band Together.

As any true Pittsburgh native would be, Angela is an AVID Steelers •fan. With former coach Bill Cowher on her “hero list,” ironically it wasn’t until she moved to Raleigh that she got the thrill of meeting him in person (Even she will admit she was a little star struck).

If you are interested in sponsoring a signature event at North Hills, contact Angela Slater at [email protected], or 919-833-7755.
