A Week of ReflectionKia Ora whānau,

The week just gone was a good week of reflection and of keeping an eye to the future. On Wednesday I had the privilege of meeting with each of the teaching staff for 45 minutes, 1 on 1, as part of this year’s teacher appraisal. This was an initial meeting where we discussed the year that has gone, looking at successes and frustrations and then looked to make some plans for the year ahead. I was heartened by the honesty with which the teachers reflected on their teaching and learning programmes, and on their own professional development needs. Each of the teachers has set some goals for this year that are certainly going to be of benefit to themselves and their tamariki. I would like to thank Tanya Connelly for relieving on Wednesday in each class which freed up the time for the teachers.

On Thursday I attended a Tomorrow’s School Review Meeting presented by the author of the report that has come out, Bali Haque. There were over 150 Canterbury principals at this meeting. There are some significant recommendations in the report that have the potential to change the face of Education in New Zealand as we know it. I was particularly interested when Bali was asked if this report and the recom- mendations would be discussed cross party and if they were adopted, would they also be agreed to cross party. The response certainly indicated that there is hope that all political parties would agree on the recommendations. We now have to wait and see.

Later in the newsletter there is some information on how you can have your say on the report. I would certainly encourage all of our community to get involved in this discussion. The future of our education system and the well-being of our tamariki depends on many people having a voice.

Weetbix Try-athlonA huge congratulations to all those children and parents who braved the weather and competed in the Weetbix Try-athlon on Sunday. From what I hear the luckily the weather played ball for them too.

We had a large number of students racing in the morning and a smaller group in the afternoon. There was certainly a lot of excitement when the children collected their school jackets to wear - some for the very first time.

The event involved a swim, a bike ride and a run in and around Jelly Park. This is always a popular event. Many thanks to Samantha Ward Martin for taking on the role of supervising this group and for setting up the school gazebo.

If any parents have other photos of the competitors please email them to me as I would love to include them in future newsletters.

Time for you to have your say!

Now that the Taskforce’s report Our Schooling Futures: Stronger Together |Whiria Ngā Kura Tūātinitini has been published, they are very keen to receive feedback from as many people as possible to help them complete their final recommendations and report to the Minister of Education in late April 2019. The following information is for parents, whānau and the wider school community so that they know about the following: · Public consultation meetings: the Taskforce will be holding public consultation meetings around the country, starting on Thursday, 14 February and finishing on Wednesday, 27 March. We really encourage everyone to come along to these events and discuss the future of our schooling system. The full schedule is now available on our website (venues will be added for events as they are confirmed): https://conversation.education.govt.nz/conversations/tomorrows-schools-review/have-your-say-today/ . · An online survey: this canvasses opinions on each of the 32 recommendations, is now available here: https://consultation.education.govt.nz/tsr/survey2019/ and will remain open until 31 March 2019. It will be available in Te Reo and other languages within the next week. · A free 0800 number for oral submissions: call 0800 FOR TSR (0800 367 877) to leave your thoughts on the future of our schooling system. · Postcards: for students, families and anyone who just wants to briefly ‘have their say’ on a recommendation or the full report. Freepost postcards will be available at the public meetings. · Formal written submissions: these can be sent to: [email protected] .

Margaret Thorsborne - Restorative JusticeMargaret Thorsborne is running a parent session at Loburn School on the evening of 11th March.

In this brief session, Margaret will explore the need to build conflict-competence, among other important social skills, in our young people. This involves helping them find their voice, take responsibility for their role in what might have gone wrong, learning about empathy and compassion, and how to make things right. Parents and teachers roles in this means we are their guides, not rescuers!

BOT Spot - Sabrina Ilett BOT Chair

Kia Ora Koutou,

I trust everyone has settled back into school and their busy after school activities. It has always amazed me how much our kids at North Loburn school manage to fit into their days and I hope those kids know they couldn’t do it without the support of their teachers and parents alike.

For those of you that are new to the school, my name is Sabrina Ilett and I am the current Board Chair. At the end of last year, I announced my decision to stand down from the BOT at the upcoming trustees elections. It is my intention to stay on the Board until the end of Term 2 to ensure a smooth transition for the new Chair and Board members. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the Board over the last nearly 7 years, 3 of those as Chair. It’s an incredibly rewarding role and I have learnt an amazing appreciation for the teaching staff, principal and students. There is so much work that goes on behind the scenes to help nurture our wee ones into citizens of the future that also includes us as parents.

With this in mind I can officially announce that in addition to myself, Mark Stephens and Anne Murphy will also not be seeking re-election. I would like to personally and on behalf of our community, thank them both for their commitment, passion and time in assisting the school as valued Board members. Therefore, there will be 3 spaces on our Board in the upcoming elections (date to be confirmed very shortly). I implore anyone with a passion for our school and interested in the role of governance to contact myself [email protected] or Darryn Ward for any information, or to answer any questions you may have. We also have information packs in the school office. It is really important to understand the role of governance and there are FREE workshops available once elected, so do not be put off if you have no Board experience. I started with zero experience but the level of support available is great. Reasons for joining should be for the wants and needs of the school as a whole. As I said before, this is an incredibly rewarding role and I urge you to consider yourself and what you could bring to our neat little school.

Feel free to stop me and chat and I will be happy to answer any questions.

Look after each other.

Sabrina

MANA AKEOn Friday morning some of you mayhave had the pleasure of meeting Leah Woods. Leah is our school liaison for the newly established Mana Ake project. She will be attending our assembly on Friday to share some information. The following is an extract from the Mana Ake brochure explaining what it is.

What is Mana Ake?Mana Ake - Stronger for Tomorrow provides wellbeing and mental health support for children aged five to 12 years old across Canterbury. Mana Ake kaimahi (workers) work alongside schools with children and whānau, to promote wellbeing and provide support when a wellbeing or mental health concern is identified. Mana Ake aims to intervene early to ensure the right support gets to the right children at the right time.

Mana Ake kaimahi can:• support teachers to implement classroom programmes that promote wellbeing;• deliver programmes that support resilience, self esteem, emotional regulation, and copingwith change;• work with children and their whānau at home and/or at school;• connect schools and whānau to community resources that enhance wellbeing.

The Mana Ake kaimahi will be working across our Puketeraki Col. There will be 8 of them. They will be able to support groups of students or individuals who are experiencing ongoingconcerns that impact their wellbeing. This includes anxiety, feeling alone, parental separation, grief and loss, and managing emotions. The school is able to refer students and families to the Mana Ake Kaimahi.

Board of Trustees Triennial ElectionsNZSTA are preparing for the upcoming Triennial BoT elections. NZSTA is working very hard to encourage parent and whanau participation on school boards in order to help shape and support the education of their children. To that end, we will be rolling out the Korari Programme for anyone interested in finding out about standing for the school board elections and having a say in the education of their children. On the next few pages you will see the following resources for you to read..

1. Korari: a programme (workshop) that provides you with governance training to help you understand

the role of school boards of trustees.

We will be rolling out workshops for Korari in March/April this year. Please see attached poster for

this.

2. Korari form: NZSTA will support anyone who advises us they are interested in becoming a trustee, by

way of the workshops but also providing access to our Learning Management System where online

modules re. school governance, student achievement etc. can be completed.

Attached on the next page is a form for completion which should be emailed to [email protected]

3. Community member guide to the role of the board of trustees: This explains a lot of commonly

asked questions and information about becoming a trustee. Please email Darryn Ward (Principal) for

a copy of this resource at [email protected]
