SALEM Salem HeritageDays are organized by residentsof Salem for residents of Salem,to celebrate the city they all callhome.

For more than 50 years, thefirst 10 days of August have beenset aside for bringing activitiesand entertainment to the streetsof Witch City.

First and foremost, HeritageDays honor Salems seniors witha dinner dance and other specialevents and discounts throughoutthe city.

But to show appreciation forchildren, as well, a kids night isusually held on Salem Commonwith face painting, bounce housesand other fun activities.

There are two new HeritageDays events for 2014, startingwith a Concert on the Commonto kick things off on the night ofFriday, Aug. 1.

The first weekend of Heritage Dayswill also feature Bridgin Gaps, a freeconcert at Salem Willows with perfor-mances ranging from local and non-local recording artists, live bands, dance groups, poets and other per-formance styles.

There will also be guest speak-ers from nonprofit and charitableorganizations, part of an eventcatering to all ages a nd tastes andseeking to bridge gaps betweengenerations, cultures and musicalpalates.

While all of this years scheduleisnt yet set, Heritage Days usuallyfeatures live musical performanceson Derby Wharf.

There have also been parties andtrips around the harbor on Friend-

ship or other seaworthy vessels. For anyone curious about the envi-ronment below the water, muckwalks tour Salems tidal pools andtake a close look at the creatures thatlive there.

Dogs in costume, parading through thestreets, are a favorite event for spectatorsat Heritage Days, as are the lip-sync com-petitions and improvised street perfor-mances offered by local theater groups andcomedians.

Food is always on the menu at Heritage

Days, which in the past have featured pizzacompetitions on Salem Common and an IceScream Bowl with tasty samples from local

ice cream parlors.Mayor Kim Driscoll, or other local

dignitaries, have also sampled the fareat local restaurants and pubs in a May-ors Night Out.

North Shore in SummerNORTH SHORE MUSIC THEATRE

BEVERLY Of the six big-name musicals that make upNorth Shore Music Theatres2014 season, theres one in par-ticular that theater owner BillHanney is really excited to bringto town.

The Little Mermaid, Hanneysaid, will likely be the biggestshow at the theater ever.

Its not been this side of NewYork City ever, he said. Wereone of the lucky ones to get therights to it.

Hanney, who saw the show onBroadway, likened the musicalto the colorful, elaborate stageadaptation of The Lion King.

Based on the 1989 Disneyfilm and one of Hans ChristianAndersens stories, The LittleMermaid will be quite the pro-duction, Hanney said, includ-ing elaborate costumes, aerialstunts and a score that manywill recognize from its animatedcounterpart.

Being in a round, we get to bereally creative, Hanney added.

The season opens June 3 withCole Porters musical comedy,Anything Goes, followed byThe Little Mermaid in Julyand the ever-popular Greasein August. Chicago brings AllThat Jazz and more to town atthe end of September, followedby the return of Les Miserablesat the end of October.

Closing out the season inDecember is the theaters annualmusical production of A Christ-mas Carol. Fans will be pleasedto know David Coffee is repris-ing his role of the curmudgeonly

miser Ebenezer Scrooge. The theater, which celebratesits 60th anniversary next year, remains a popular destinationfor couples and families alike.Last year, it broke its own showrun record with two of its musi-cals The Sound of Music andMiss Saigon and this yearhas already surpassed last yearssubscription sales, Hanney said.

In addition to its annual sea-son schedule, the theater also

hosts a series of Friday showsfor children. Called Kaleido-scope Childrens Theatre, thisyears lineup of interactivemusicals includes Jack and theBeanstalk, Little Red RidingHood and Pocahontas. EachFriday show includes two per-formances, which Hanney saidare so popular among familiesthat they generally sell out.

The theaters round stagealso plays host to a num-ber of musical and comedicacts. After a successful run lastyear, Ballroom with a Twist, which features performersfrom the popular TV talentshows So You Think You CanDance, Dancing with theStars and American Idol, returns for a weekend run thissummer. And Harvey Robbinswill bring his Doo-Wopp Hallof Fame of America show, fea-

turing 2014 inductees, includ-ing the original members ofThe Duprees and The Persua-sions, on Oct. 12.

For those who want tomake a night of it, theatergrounds include a gardenbistro serving preparedfoods for a relaxing mealbefore the show. The the-ater also features host res-

    taurants for each stage run.

North Shore in Summer32ND ANNUAL ANTIQUE AND CLASSIC BOAT FESTIVAL

SALEM Once again thissummer, Salem Harbor will hostmagnificent boats from yester-year when Brewer HawthorneCove Marina holds the 32ndannual Antique & Classic BoatFestival.

A wide variety of privateyachts and wooden boats will beon display the weekend of Aug.23 and 24.

Where else can one see 1900s-60s motor yachts, mahoganyspeedboats, sloops, yawls, schoo-ners and a 19th-century gold-leaf canoe, festival coordinatorPat Wells said in a press release.Although many of these craftare museum quality, they are realboats in the water and in use bytheir owners today.

One of the vessels expected toreturn this year is Speedwell, a1921 cabin cruiser. Not only is theold Elco a magnificent sight, but itsowner is one of several boat-owning musi-cians who have been known to stroll thedocks during the festival serenading otherboat owners.

The public loved that, Wells said.Music, it turns out, has become an unex-

pected byproduct of the festival. This tradition may have started with the

late Nina Vickers, a harp player whose hus-band, Russ Vickers, used to own HawthorneCove Marina. She often played on the docksalone or as part of a trio, Wells said.

Last year, the owner of a 60-foot motor-sailer brought along her cello.

She invited some musician friends on

board, and we were getting a cello concert,Wells said.

One year, Billy Joels boat came to the fes-tival. Unfortunately, the famous piano mandid not attend. But we got a very nice cap-tain, Wells said.

Along with the boats and, hopefully, a lit-tle spontaneous music, the festival featuresacrafts fair, artists, an old-time band, chil-drens activities, the Blessing of the Fleet anda boat parade.
