By all accounts, Slide the City and Car Free Day on Aug. 22 made a giant splash with locals and visitors alike, as well as businesses in the Lower Lonsdale area that benefited from the extra exposure and foot traffic. The main attraction was clearly the 1,000-foot (300 metre) slip-and-slide, which stretched from Keith Road near Victoria Park to Fourth Street. A crowd gathered around the large landing pool to critique each slider’s splash at the end. Excited riders, most of whom secured their chance to slide down a steep section of NorthVan’s famous arterial road months ago, started lining up just before 9 a.m. Saturday for the sold-out event. A family from Langley was among those waiting in line, eagerly anticipating their first slide of the day. “I booked it in March; I was like, ‘Hell, yeah,’ ” said Tara Payne. By early afternoon adrenaline was running high. “I actually hurt my vocal cords,” said 15-year-old Carson Graham secondary student JudeTear, of the jubilant screaming he did on the slide. The three-lane slide course even had a hurdle that tried its best to steal the infamous Lions Gate Bridge bump’s thunder. “There is a bump in the middle and you are not sure if you are going to bail,” reported slider Kelly Gemini. Meanwhile, father and daughter duo Leslie Connor, 55, and Danielle, 21, were amused by the fact the Thousands turn out for water slide, Car Free fest BRENT RICHTER [email protected] The much-maligned Lions Gate Bridge bump has itself been bumped — at least for a while. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure crews spent nine hours overnight Sunday removing 4.5-centimetre- thick welded metal plates that were blamed for causing traffic chaos for North Shore commuters last week. “The bridge is back to normal,” said Norm Parkes, executive director of highway operations for the ministry. “Pieces for (maintenance) of the joint were delayed and we decided, rather than just leave the bump there and not do any work, we took the bump away.” The joint at the north end of the bridge had similar work done in January this year. The plate was an annoyance but didn’t result in the same problems as the one at the south end, Parkes said. “We didn’t think it would be as impactful as it was. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have done it,” he said. There is no timeline for when work on the south joint will restart, but Parkes said the engineers have gone back to the drawing board to come up with something better than the dreaded bump. “We’ve tasked our engineers with doing exactly that – figuring out what an alternate cover will look like, and when is an optimal time to do the work” Parkes said. slip-and-slide stopped rightoutside their home at FourthStreet.

Layne Schad, who wasvisiting from Saskatchewan, took full advantage of theslide, saying the eventwould logistically never yin his vertically challengedprovince.

Most participants hurtleddown Lonsdale on ofcialSlide the City inner tubes ofbright colours, while otherswere more creative withtheir inatables broughtfrom home: a large orca,an old-school Nintendogame controller, a pizzaslice, a cow and a queen-

size mattress helmed by aguy wearing a captains hatcharting a course downLonsdale.

The long lineups werethe only downside to thewater slide, with manypeople reporting they waitedan hour and a half betweenturns. NorthVancouverresident Steph McWatterssaid she was misled byUtah-based Slide the Cityorganizers after buyingwhat she believed to be anunlimited, all-day $61-pass,only to be cut off fromsliding around 1:30 p.m.

And that seemsexpensive for two slides, maybe three, saidMcWatters.

Not everyone that turnedup to the event was thereto partake in the sliding.Seven-year-old Jude manneda lemonade stand for hisfriend while she went downthe slide, and even had thecitys mayor as a customer. Also on the sidelines wasPatricia Blanchard who saidshe could hear organizerssetting up the slide overnightfrom her apartment at thecorner of Keith Road andLonsdale.

From midnight youcould hear them laughingwhile setting it up.Theywere having fun, saidBlanchard.

Fun was the operativeword for the day, agreed

    City of NorthVancouverMayor Darrell Mussatto.

Everybody is having aton of fun. I dont think Iveseen Lonsdale this fun inmany years, said Mussatto, adding that he would loveto see the water slide returnnext year.

Given the Stage 3MetroVancouver wateringrestrictions, in the weeksleading up to the event thecity faced some criticism.Around 50,000 litres ofwater purchased by STCorganizers from privatelyowned Country FountainSpringWater in Abbotsford was trucked to NorthVancouver and used on theslip and slide.

A portion of that waterwas salvaged after the event, dechlorinated and put into awater storage tank to be laterused to irrigate plants andtrees in the citys parks.

Meanwhile, the Car FreeDay festival belowThird

Street that featured a beergarden, live entertainmentand vendors selling goodsand services that includedartisan freezies, wood combsand intricate temporarytattoos was hailed a successby the Lower Lonsdalebusiness community.

Oh yeah, absolutely, said PeteTurcotte, ownerof Big Petes Comics &Collectibles. The extra foottrafc didnt immediatelytranslate into more dollarsfor Big Petes, but newfaces came by the store thatTurcotte hopes will becomerepeat customers.

It was better than anynormal Saturday, saidTurcotte.

    Dear Editor:Over the past ve

years, I have noticed anincreasing number ofnew construction projectsor renovations that haveincluded the installationof a multitude of exteriorlights that can number inthe dozens. These high-intensity unshielded lightsusually ood at the ownershouse and landscaping(and their neighbourshouses).

On my street in asleepy little corner ofWestVancouver, I amcompletely surrounded byhouses where the exteriorlights are left on everynight, seven nights a week, from dusk until well aftermidnight. In some cases, the lights are left on theentire night. Ironically, these people are never outthere marvelling over whata wonderful sight it is.

    Five years ago, I was

able to sit out on my deckin the evening and stargazewhile bats ew aroundeating mosquitoes.Theneighbours at the time hadno unnecessary lights on.

    We didnt even have astreetlight.

Now I cannot see thenight sky because myneighbours excessivelybright lights that resembleaircraft landing lights blindme.

    I miss the days when

there was just a dimporch light left on onlyif the people were out orexpecting company.

It seems that the peoplewho do not want lightsfrom their neighboursshining into their eyes andwindows, have no rights toenjoy the darkness.

The International DarkSkies Association websitehas a wealth of informationon research revealingthat light pollution is a

waste of energy resourcesand harmful to theenvironment, wildlife andto peoples health, safetyand sense of wellbeing.

I propose the adoptionof a bylaw limiting exteriorlighting thereby protectingthe environment, wildlife, health and the rights ofpeople who want no lightshining on their homes atnight.Jonathan MooreWestVancouver

    VIEWPOINT

Slip slidin awayO ther Lower Mainlandmunicipalities looked on withjealousy at all the fun we werehaving over here on Saturday.By almost all accounts, the Slide the

City event with its 1,000-foot (300-metre) water slide was a smash. If its any comfort to the naysayers,

the water was legally acquired from abottled water company in Abbotsfordand a portion of it was to be recycledto water local plants. That said, werepretty unimpressed that Slide the Cityorganizers slipped out of town withouttaking questions as to where the waterwas coming from, how much was beingused and how much was being salvaged. With this being the summer of watering

restrictions, drought shaming and forestres, the optics werent great. People onlywant to talk about the fun parts, it seems.

Organizers also could have been a littlemore upfront with their 6,000 ticketbuyers, many of whom said they didnthave enough time to get their rides in,thanks to the lineup. But, all told, well raise a glass of

recycled water to the event and lookforward to it coming back next year witha few lessons learned. It was a powerful way to reclaim public

space, celebrate with our neighbours andhave some good, clean fun. This, after theCity of Vancouver rejected the slide oversafety concerns. Clearly, their loss wasour gain.Similarly, we look forward to the Car

Free Day festival growing into an annualmust-visit event, especially as the footof Lonsdale and the Shipyards comeinto their own. Kudos are owed to itsorganizers and volunteers.

Dear Editor:At the July 20 regular

meeting, City of NorthVancouver council voted5-2 in favour of attendingtheWalk21 Conference

inVienna this October. This is a conference wherepeople talk about how tomake their cities morewalkable. Two councillorsvoted against this frivolous

use of tax money, RodClark and Pam Bookham, while Mussatto, Bell,Keating, Back andBuchanan voted in favour.

    Our NorthVan residents

know how to make our citymore walkable repairthe aging, broken-downsidewalks.

Dont waste our moneyon expensive trips to

Europe. We would all likea trip toVienna but wewouldnt expect someoneelse to pay for it.I.A. BlanchettNorthVancouver

Dear Editor:I have been a Harmony

Arts volunteer for threeyears. There were apparentlymore than 200 of us thisyear, not to mentionexhibitors, musicians, etc.

I do not believewe should be exemptfrom parking bylawsbecause of this; however, the (municipality)should appreciate theextra demand on long-term parking withinwalking distance duringtheir endorsed festival, sponsored if not paid for byWestVancouver.

    Dear Editor:The media loves to

blame the wildres oncigarettes carelesslythrown from vehicles. They got their informationfrom what source? Out of10,000 lightning strikes, the cigarette was theculprit. No proof!

I stopped smoking fouryears ago and am veryhappy I did. When I didsmoke, I always had anashtray in my car or truck.I never had the temptationto toss a lit cigarette outthe window. In fact, theclassiest cars and truckshad lighted ashtrays as a

    prestige item.Tossing a cigarette

out the window is sheerstupidity. I mean, whynot just put it out inthe ashtray? You know, the amenity that everycar manufacturer putin their vehicles? Oops. There are none. It seemsthat every car and truckmanufacturer decided toremove cigarette ashtraysfrom their vehicles on orabout 2008. So the smokerhas a backup camera butno ashtray. So what doesthe smoker do? ... Getrid of the butt out thewindow, because there is

no place in the vehicle toextinguish a lit cigarette. For 100 years the autoindustry provided ashtraysto cater to the smokers. The smokers are still therebut the industry removedthe ashtray to extinguishthe butt.

So is the auto industryat fault for creating allthe wildres? Nope. It isstill the guy who ickedhis butt out the windowbecause there was no placeto butt it out inside hisvehicle.

    Start thinking. Please.LeoVanderbylNorthVancouver

    Energy boardhearings halted

    JENNIFERMOREAUContributing writer

The national energy boardhearing for the KinderMorgan pipeline could beback on track soon, as theoil company is condentit can replace evidenceremoved over conict-of-interest concerns.

The NEB put thehearing on hold last Friday, because Steven Kelly, theConservative governmentslatest appointment to theboard, is an oil industryconsultant who ledevidence in support ofKinder MorgansTransMountain pipelineexpansion. The NEB is nowstriking that evidence, butKinder Morgan will have areplacement plan by Friday,as requested by the NEB.

We are condent we canmeet requirements outlinedby the NEB and that theregulatory process canproceed in a timely mannerwithout material delay, saidKinder Morgan Canadapresident Ian Anderson

in a media release. KinderMorgan commissioned Kellyto provide an opinion on thesupply and demand for oil inthe future, and his evidencewas led in December 2013.

Marc Eliesen, a formerdeputy energy minister inOntario andManitoba, described Kellys work as theprimary economic evidencein the pipeline case, and saidother experts were basingtheir arguments on it.

Eliesen, an intervenorwho withdrew from thehearing in protest, also raisedconcerns about Kellysevidence, stating he used anetbacks analysis based onone scenario: that oil wouldstay at roughly US$100 abarrel for the next couple ofdecades, something thatsalready changed.

In my professionaljudgment, Kellys evidenceleft a lot to be desired,Eliesen said. It didnt havethe usual disclaimers; itdidnt have the sensitivityanalysis.

(A sensitivity analysiswould have accountedfor alternate scenarios, not just the $100-a-barrelprojection.)

No one from KinderMorgan was available tocomment further on whatevidence the company wasusing to replace Kellys

analysis. Kellys NEBappointment takes effectOct. 13, and he will not bepart of the three-personpanel that makes a nalrecommendation on thepipeline proposal.

Kelly is listed as a vice-president of IHS, a Calgary-based consulting rm, andhes held senior positionswith Shell Canada.

According toTaraODonovan, a spokeswomanfor the NEB, the boardschairman, PeterWatson, was involved in theappointment process, butits the Governor in Council(advised by cabinet) thatmakes the nal call onappointments.

When asked if Kellywould have any inuenceon the NEBs decision ontheTrans Mountain le,ODonovan said the panelreviewing the pipelineexpansion will make itsdecision independently ofthe rest of the board.

The appointment anddelay have been furtherfrustrations for North ShoreNOPE, one of the localgroups granted intervenorstatus for the NEBs hearingsinto the project.

The groups founder,Janice Edmonds, said shehad purchased ights toCalgary so she could be

present forTrans Mountainsarguments before the boardand her group has beencounting on a Sept. 24hearing date.

People have arrangedtheir whole summer.Wevehad this deadline of Sept.3 for preparing our writtenargument.Weve beenworking really, really, reallyhard, giving up our summerholidays to prepare thisevidence and nal argumentand all of that is nowcancelled, she said.

Edmonds said Kellyshould not have beenappointed in the rstplace. Why would he beappointed to an organizationthats supposed to beindependent and neutral andmake good decisions that aresupposed to be in the bestinterest of Canadians? sheasked. Its obvious, even tosomebody like me that its aconict of interest.

Edmonds also questionedthe timing of the announce-ment and speculated that theOct. 19 federal election mayhave been a factor. Im surethey didnt want to have thehearings when they knewthered be lots of protestingand lots of media coverage ofthe hearings, she said.

The unusually drysummer has left someplanting projects sittingon the drawing boardwaiting for fall rains toprovide cooler conditionsand salvation from thedrought.

But wait no longer ifyoure a veggie gardenerbecause timing is everythingwhen it comes to planting.

Winter gardening is nota widely practiced art in ourregion with many gardenerssimply planting a few tulipsand some pansies andcalling it a season.Veggiegardening during fall andwinter is not only possiblein our region, it can behighly productive if you startearly.Traditionally, wintervegetable crops are seed-sown in August which allowstime for germination, growthand establishment beforewinter. Early establishmentof winter vegetables is criticalif you actually want to havesomething to harvest during

winter. Later sowings andplantings will still grow andestablish but the harvest isusually smaller than earlierrotations. If you cant ordont want to sow seeds, tryto buy pre-grown veggiesfrom garden centres orfarms.

When I started out inhorticulture, my journeyman

training was providedby an expert Germanjourneyman named PeterTimm.Along with alandscape constructionbusiness, his large propertysupported an ornamentaleld nursery, a compostingoperation, a greenhouse, and a large vegetablegarden. Each summer in

late-August during breaks inthe landscape constructionseason, we worked inhis veggie garden andgreenhouse sowing seeds ofcarrots, spinach, kale andseveral types of greens likearugula. But his favouriteplant for fall planting waskohlrabi which is a largeabove-ground vegetable that

tastes similar to turnip orparsnip. Kohlrabi is winterhardy and can be harvestedwell into January.

The lessons of thatexperience are quitesimple: Choose non-GMO,climate suitable and diseaseresistant varieties to start

with. Sow lots of seed tohedge your germinationbet. Choose only the mostrobust growing seedlingsfor planting out. Plantout seedlings quickly andprotect the seedlings fromdrying out in the latesummer heat by mulchingthe soil after planting.Weused homemade compostfor mulch but any organicmulch like leaves, straw orwood chips will work ne.

He also had me installblack landscape cloth overtop of the soil for crops thatneed warm soil to establishand for late-season plantingsin October. The black clothattracted heat from thesun which warmed the soilduring the day and retainedheat at night. This is one ofthe very few instances wherethe use of the otherwiseuseless landscape cloth isdesirable in the garden.

Another technique weused for growing winterveggies was to install rowcovers over some crops.Arow cover consists of nelywoven fabric, usually whitecolored but other coloursare available for specicuses. The row cover isinstalled over top of a cropto prevent pest infestation(example: carrot ies) and toprovide a measure of climateprotection. Row covers areeasily and cheaply supportedover the crop using plasticirrigation pipe pushed intothe ground and bent overthe planting bed to form alow-height support structurefor the cover. For coldgardens at higher elevationsand so forth, plastic coverscan be installed over the cropto keep the rain and frostoff the crop to signicantlyextend the growing season.Plastic must be ventilatedduring the heat of the day

and closed at night to retainheat. We also used moundedplanting beds which allowedthe suns rays to warm upsides of the planting bedthereby improving plantgrowth during the waningwarmth of fall.

Fall and winter vegetablegardening is not for everyonebut its also not that difcultonce you learn the rhythmof the season. Even the land-less gardener living in anapartment can grow lettuceand radishes in large pots onthe balcony or indoors on awindowsill.

A key part of learninghow to grow fall and wintervegetables is to choosethe right plant for yourgardens conditions and foryour skill level. Everyonewants to grow tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers, but you could throw akale seed on the roadsideand the seed would grow.Cucumbers and tomatoestake considerably more skillto grow for harvest. Forbeginners, people who aretime-starved or those withspace constraints, I suggestgrowing easy and rewardingplants such as lettuce, kale orchives. And many perennialherbs like rosemary and sagecan be grown and harvestedyear-round.

Some nal advice skilland technique grow healthyplants, not products. Chooseonly those additives tothe crop that you wouldconsider edible for you oryour children.Any additiveused for crop growing will bemetabolized into plant tissue,or residual on the leaf (i.e.pesticides), so you will beeating the additive.

Aschool teacher onceasked North ShoreTaekwondos MasterTony Kook howmartial arts schools teachimportant life skills differentlythan other sports. She wantedto know what kidswould learn intaekwondo thatmight be differentthan what theydlearn in soccer, baseball or hockey.

The difference,he said, is in the approach,There are only so many waysto kick and punch, but a greatmartial arts school is going touse those as tools, use thoseas means to develop lifeskills,he says. In other sportstheyre going to learn respectin indirect ways. We do it in avery, very direct way.

Kook says that teachinglife skills is at the core ofhis schools martial artscurriculum.

Rather than using mat chatsto talk about confidencein the abstract, the schooldiscusses concrete examplesof how students can integratethe theme into their dailylives, such as putting theirhand up in school when they

know the answer or saying noto peer pressure.

We try and teach themhow to speak up, says Kook.Confidence teaches you theresnever a wrong time to do the

    right thing.

Monthly themesare the focus ofthe characterdevelopmentportion of the

    curriculum.

The classes aretremendously fun, theyrevery safe and theyre ageappropriate, says Kook.

The school has an averageratio of 10 students per oneinstructor, allowing for one-on-one interaction and support.

Were truly here to really, really help people toachieve goals andimprove quality of life, says Kook. Were just usingtaekwondo as the tool toget there.

North Shore Taekwondooffers classes for childrenaged 4 to 6, youthaged 7 to 13 as well asteens and adults aged 14and up. Classesoperate on a monthlymembership basis.

Nine-year-old Riya Bahiais looking forward toreturning to school in acouple of weeks.

Shes heading intoGrade 5, and says startinga new grade brings on amixture of emotion.

Im nervous about if itsgoing to be really hard andIm also excited to see allthe new challenges ahead ofme, she notes.

Riyas favourite subject isscience, which she is reallygood at, and she likesschool because she getsto learn about differentthings and different places.

Although there willbe some of the same kidsfrom last year in her newclass, there will be somenew ones, but Riya saysshe makes new friendssimply by being friendly. She already has a lot offriends at school and thatspart of the reason why sheis looking forward to goingback although she reallyenjoyed the break.

I had an amazingsummer, she reports.Highlights include a trip toMexico and sleepovers withher cousins.

Outside of school, Riyaenjoys swimming anddiving, and will start iceskating this winter. She alsolikes to ride her bike andher scooter and jump onher trampoline.

Riyas not too worriedabout getting back into theswing of things at school,

and says shes generallyorganized throughout theyear, but gets plenty of helpfrom her mom and dad.She also uses an agenda tokeep track of her variousactivities and schoolwork.

I try my best (to stayorganized), she says, butadmits sometimes sheforgets her homework atschool, especially if she isrushing to get to an after-school activity.

Riya already knows shemay want to be a lawyerwhen she grows up.Whenasked how she stays focusedand interested at school, she explains that she hasa couple of strategies.Sometimes if she feels sheslosing focus, she will askto move to a quieter placein the classroom or evenout in the hall so she isnttempted to look out thewindow.

And if she feels herselflosing interest she employssome positive thinking.

If I keep myself focusedand do a hundred per centI will get a good job whenIm older and Ill have agood life. I think a little bitabout the future and I tryto stay as focused as I can.

Riyas mom Rubysays moving through thevarious school stages withher daughter has been alearning experience.Talkingto other parents helps. Andher three-year-old son isnow starting preschoolso she will be starting theprocess all over again.

Ruby says school seemsmore fast paced now than

when she was a kid and itsa lot of work to stay on topof everything.

Its denitely almostanother job, she notes.

The NorthVancouvermom, who is also aregistered nurse, and herhusband both work shiftwork and rely on family forhelp.

Both sets ofgrandparents are veryhelpful, she says, admittingwith a laugh: Theyregreat.Theyre probablymore organized than weare.

Digital calendarsconnected on their phoneshelps all the adults stayin the loop, and a printcalendar is used at home forthe family.

With all the work ahead, its not surprising Ruby saysshe gets a bit tense in thelast couple of weeks leadingup to the start of school.

Im excited becauseI think she (Riya) getsexcited but denitely it is abit nerve-racking.

Preparation for thenew school year startswith reviewing some ofthe schoolwork fromthe previous year, andjournaling to help Riya getback into the practise ofreading and writing.

Bedtimes have neverreally been a problem, butRuby is not looking forwardto having to prepare schoollunches ahead of timeagain. Its the part she leastlikes about school. Findinga good variety of food thathas well-balanced nutrition

and is something Riyawill be interested in eatingbecomes more challenging

as the year goes on.I love the hot lunch

    days at school, she says

with a laugh, noting thenshe only has to come upwith a snack.

School routines quicklypounce on summer fun.No more sleeping in, wayless sunshine and goodbyevacation. Start preparing atleast a week ahead for yourown sake and sanity. Kidsthrive on routine and needrules, so here are some ideasto get you on the right foot:Adjust sleep patterns

Summer lets us slip intoa slightly slacker schedule. However, late nightscombined with early startsare a bad combination whenit comes to back to school. One week before schoolbegins, start getting yourkids to sleep 15-20 minutesearlier each night. Goodsleep routines are associatedwith higher performance atschool.Go label crazy

As the school year inchescloser, parents are makingvarious preparations.

School supplies, scheduling, and lunchesare among the topconsiderations, but it wontbe long before coughs andcolds are top of the list.

Kathryn Libunau isa pharmacist at LondonDrugs in NorthVancouverand says the start of a newschool year brings with itsome common questionsfrom parents. The mostpopular ones are about lice.

Libunau explains that if achild has lice its importantto check behind ears and atthe base of the childs neckfor eggs.

There are a varietyof treatments available, but Libunau says a childshouldnt be treated unlesshe or she has lice. Insome kids lice is showingresistance with conventionaltreatments, she notes. It maybe more likely with kids whohave already had multipletreatments, but there arealso natural approachesthat may be effective ifconventional treatmentsarent.

Hand hygiene isalso important for kids, especially when they startback to school. Libunaurecommends washing handsand up to elbows. In general, hand sanitizers are also anoption, but some kids showsensitivity to hand sanitizersbecause many are alcoholbased. She also recommendsparents regularly wipesurfaces that are used alot, including doorknobs, phones, etc.

Start of school alsobrings lots of questionsabout coughs and colds, and Libunau notes thattreatment depends on thechild as some medications, such as those containingdecongestants, are notsuitable for kids under theage of six.

In general, parentscan focus on keeping kidshealthy by making sure theyeat well, get plenty of rest, and get some vitamin C,such as by eating oranges.

Keeping them hydratedis really important too,Libunau, adding somekids forget to drink waterwhen they get busy. Stayinghydrated will help keep theirenergy up, she says, andwarns to reduce intake ofsugary drinks.

Libunau doesnthave specic medicationrecommendations forparents when it comes topreparing for a new schoolyear, but suggests beingaware of u season, whichgenerally starts mid-October, and consideringnecessary medicationfor allergies, as well aselectrolytes for kids who arevomiting or have diarrhea.

In general just goodhygiene, I think that wouldbe the main thing, saysLibunau of tips for parentsto help keep their kidshealthy during the schoolseason.

In a recent press release,London Drugs made thefollowing suggestions forparents about preparingtheir medicine cabinets forback to school.Dispose of expired orunused medication toreduce the risk of accidentalingestion, misuse oroverdose. Check the expiration dateon all medications and onitems in your rst aid kit. Some medications, suchas certain antibiotics, canbecome dangerous afterexpiration.Medications canbe disposed of by bringingthem to a pharmacy.

Make sure you havea fully stocked rst aidkit. Inspect old boxes ofbandages and hygieneproducts as they oftendegrade and must bereplaced do as not tocompromise sterilizedpackages.

Update allergyprescriptions for studentswith severe allergies, andhave a plan in place forschool response in case ofemergency.Hand washing isparticularly important whenkids return to school, notes

the release, adding correcthand washing involves about30 seconds of warm waterwith soap all over the hand.If water and soap are notavailable, an alcohol-basedhand sanitizer will sufce.Ensure you rub your handsuntil the product is dry.

The menu, which is billedas a soft launch offering, represents the earliest effortsfrom the recently openedrestaurant and is presumablya work in progress, withadditions or modicationsto be made in the future. If this rst iteration is anyindication, however, brunchatTap & Barrel promises tobe very, very good.

The dish in question,Poutine and Eggs, is aninspired work of shamelesslyindulgent culinary art, comprised of rough-cut,skin-on fries, cheese curds, brown gravy, mounds ofpulled bacon, soft poachedeggs and expertly emulsiedhollandaise sauce, all servedin a rustic cast iron pan.Onpaper the dish reads like adare formulated by a playfulkitchen crew:What couldwe put on the menu thatwould be so outrageouslyhedonistic that even the mostdesperate,morning-afterbrunch-goer would takepause before ordering it?

I imagine the chefwondering: I know, letsstart with a base of poutineand work our way up fromthere.

I polished off a wholeorder of the poutine duringa recent Sunday morningvisit toTap & Barrel with

my family. We sat at aspacious booth table onthe restaurants grandpatio and remarked on theenormous footprint of thisnewest addition to LowerLonsdales dining scene.TheShipyards location ofTap &Barrel is a behemoth withsprawling interior seating inthe historic, high-ceilingedCoppersmiths Buildingand an airy, wrap-aroundpatio right in the middle ofShipbuilders Square.

Tap & Barrels footprinthas actually prompted are-routing of trafc throughShipbuilders Square; thelittle bridge that once ledfrom the parking lot justeast of Lonsdale Quayinto the square has nowbeen incorporated into therestaurants patio. I mentionthis because when it comesto restaurants it is generallymy habit to prefer andchampion the underdog;I admire small businessesthat evidence the passionand unique vision of theirownership.

Tap & Barrels expansiveShipyard location clearlytrades on the blue chipequity of its highly successfulsister restaurants in OlympicVillage and False Creek;I get the impression thatno expense was spared inthe design of this newestspace. That said, I have toapplaudTap & Barrel fordelivering an experience that, while polished and well-considered, nevertheless feltat all times authentic andhonest.Despite its imposingsize,Tap & Barrel is not afaceless chain enterprise. Inmy experience, each locationmanages to t into its specicgeography like a goodneighbour, supporting thecommunity that supports it.

Take, for example,Tap& Barrels eponymous taps,of which there are many. Iwas very pleased to see that

all four of the North Shoresbreweries were representedon the new restaurantsdraught beer list, with nearbyneighbour Green Leafsupplying an exclusive GrandOpening India SessionAle.Further,Tap & Barrel is aregional leader in the wines-on-tap movement, supplyingboth entry-level andpremium pours dispensedfrom pressurized stainlesssteel kegs.

I have expressed myfondness for wines-on-tapbefore as they dramaticallyreduce bottle waste andspoilage and, certainly inthe case ofTap & BarrelsNorth Shore location, tthe local preference forsustainable products. Fromthe perspective of a wineguy, I take great comfort inknowing that my glass ofwine will never be off andI relish sampling offeringsfrom wineries that maynot be readily availableelsewhere;OkanaganFalls-basedMeyerWinerychardonnay by the glass, ontheTap & Barrel menu, is a

    treat indeed.Aside from the wonderful

poutine, which achieved aperfect balance with its salty, buttery, crispy and creamynotes, the other brunch itemswe tried were unanimouslyenjoyable. My wife DJ trieda meatless version of thebreakfast pretzel, a plate-lling knot of soft, chewy, salted pretzel with poachedeggs smothered in beer andcheddar sauce; the dishtypically includes pulledbacon as well. DJ and Ienjoyed local selections fromthe on-tap list to accompanyour meals,DJ opting for apint of Hoyne Pilsner, whileI pursued a broader overviewwithATaste of B.C. beeright, which included smallerpours of cider and beer fromCentral City, Bridge,GreenLeaf, RedTruck and Hoyne.

The kids split an orderof French toast topped withstrawberries and bananasdrizzled with chocolatesauce, capped with whippedcream, and accompanied bya ramekin of maple syrup.DJ and I appreciated that the

kids were able to leave thetable immediately followingtheir meal and exhausttheir frenetic sugar rush onthe adjacent pier (where, incidentally, they spotted aseal soaking up the sun onthe nearby helipad).

Pursuing the themeof reckless abandon to itsultimate conclusion, we allshared a dessert called theBlack BottomedMason JarPie, a squat glass jar packedwith a layer of crushed gingersnaps, half an inch of thickchocolate ganache, bourboncream and whipped cream.Splitting it four ways wasthe right approach for thistasty but exceedingly richdish, offset nicely by a doubleespresso.

Our meal was $82before gratuity.Tap & BarrelShipyards is at 8 LonsdaleAve. tapandbarrel.com 604-638-2339Chris Dagenais served as amanager for several restaurantsdowntown and on the NorthShore. He earned his sommelierdiploma in 2001.Contact:[email protected].

Though no one wants toadmit it, our amazingsummer is denitelywinding down.

I just saw some goldenleaves on a tree (eeeeeek!).While the blissful warmdays are still with us, get themost out of barbecue seasonby hosting a casual get-together centred around theperennial stars of the grill:juicy hamburgers. Im onlyincluding recipes for theburger patties themselvesbelow. Get creative whenit comes to choosing whatto wrap them in.Try usingatbreads, naan, focaccia, bagels or pitas rather thanthe usual burger buns.

If you prefer the moretraditional route, besure to buy somethinginteresting like onion orcheese buns from thebakery counter rather thanthe pre-packaged variety.A couple of notes aboutgrilling your burgers:make an indent with yourthumb in the centre of yourburger patties when youreforming them to preventthem from pufng up whentheyre cooking; and makesure the grill is really hotbefore placing the pattieson it. Dont press down onthe burgers while theyrecooking because you dontwant to squish those yummyjuices out.
