‘Heart Disease’ DescribesNumerous Conditions

Most people are aware of heart disease and its potentially devastating effects, however, few know that the term "heart disease" is a blanket term used to describe several health problems related to the heart.

According to the World Health Organization, ischaemic heart disease, which is characterized by a reduced blood supply to the heart, is the leading cause of death across the globe. Though many conditions are characterized as ischaemic heart disease, the WHO notes that other heart conditions, including stroke, are also among the top 10 most deadly diseases in the world. The following is a rundown of common heart conditions, many of which can be prevented if men and women make the right lifestyle choices.ANGINA

Angina occurs when a person has chest pain or discomfort around their heart because the muscle is not getting enough oxygen-rich blood. Angina can be a byproduct of elevated levels of stress or overexertion and may even be caused by clogged arteries. All cases of angina are not the same. Stable angina is the most common form and usually follows a pattern that is common among patients. Unstable angina is less predictable, while variant angina, the rarest form of the condition, occurs while a person is at rest. Rest and medicine are at the root of treating angina, which is more easily treated once its cause has been determined.

ATHEROSCLEROSISAtherosclerosis is characterized by the buildup of fatty

materials in the arterial walls. This fatty material can harden over time, restricting blood fl ow and resulting in calcium deposits. Daily exercise and a healthy diet void of high-fat, high-cholesterol foods are two ways to prevent or treat atherosclerosis.CARDIAC ARREST

Cardiac arrest is a culmination of several heart conditions, including angina and atherosclerosis. Also known as a heart attack, cardiac arrest occurs when blood and oxygen are unable to reach the heart. Chest discomfort, discomfort in other areas of the upper body, including the arms, back, neck or jaw, shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort and nausea or lightheadedness, may all be indicators that a person is going into cardiac arrest.HYPERTENSION

Also known as high blood pressure, hypertension is a relatively common heart condition. Nearly every adult has most likely received a blood pressure reading at one point in his or her life. The reading measures the systolic pressure, which is the pressure created when the heart beats, and the diastolic pressure, which is the pressure in the heart when it is at rest. A blood pressure above 120 over 80 is considered high and it might be caused by salt and water levels in the body and the condition of the body's kidneys, nervous system, blood vessels and hormone levels. Treating hypertension is relatively simple, as a doctor will typically recommend some dietary changes and may even prescribe medication for those patients with especially high blood pressure.STROKE

Stroke occurs when the blood supply to any part of the brain is interrupted. Potentially deadly, stroke can cause paralysis, as well. Trouble speaking, loss of coordination and trouble moving limbs may be indicative of stroke, which is considered a medical emergency that requires immediate medical help. The longer a person waits to seek treatment after the onset of a stroke often determines the severity of the consequences.

More information on heart disease is available at heart.org.- Metro Services

Daily exercise is one way men and women can preventthe onset of heart disease.

Home Resolutions You can Keep It’s not easy to stick to your New Year’s resolutions after

the fi rst few weeks, and they can drain away the good feel-ings you’ve built up over the past holidays. Whether your goals were to stop smoking, cut back on potato chips or quit avoiding the dentist, getting the job done is hard work and no fun. Why not turn things around and switch your resolutions to better your home instead of your habits? It’s never too late for a brand new New Year’s resolution — especially one that is easier to keep.SLEEP PRIORITIES

Many people don't get enough sleep and those who man-age to get to bed on time often don't sleep well — waking up or tossing and turning through the night. There are many ways you can improve your home and your bedroom to make sleeping easier.

With all the security features around our homes — glowing microwaves and alarm clocks — it's easy to be kept awake by too much light. A dark, cool room promotes good sleep and even the tiniest diode can seem glaringly bright in the middle of the night.

Cover up all those tiny lights on the TV, satellite box or whatever else is glowing in your bedroom or even outside the room. Small lights can still seem bright at night even though they are 20 or more feet away. Think your glass block bath-room is private? It is — to everything except light. Put up a room darkening blind or shade if you can see your bath from the bedroom.HOUSE GOALS

Lose the weight targets that you have set for yourself and instead, pick four top projects you'd like to get done around the house. Some helpful goals include getting rid of mismatched glasses, tableware, bowls and salt-and-pepper shakers. Short on storage? Make it your mission to add more organizers in the pantry, closets and kitchen cabinets. Installing organizers that attach to the ceiling of your garage will help you get all that stuff you rarely use off the fl oor and out of sight.OVERSTUFFED

Clutter seems to be our constant companion. This could be the time you fi nally deal it a death blow. Of course, some of that "clutter" is good stuff you hate to throw away. Besides that, someone would gladly pay for that antique corn husker that is rusting in the garden. Create a corner to collect your unused items and start listing them for sale on Ebay, Craigslist or Etsy.THE PLACE TO BE

How many times have you said to some friends, "Hey, we'd love to have you over..." but then you never do because the backyard landscaping is a mess, the carpet is worn or the family room you started to paint six months ago is still unfi nished? Make a commitment to follow through on such key items inside and outside the house that prevent you from socializing — and make your house the place to be during the year.

Learning to brush their own teeth is a lesson all children must master. Although parents ultimately may have children who become profi cient at brushing their own teeth, getting them to fl oss is generally more diffi cult. Children may fi nd it tedious and time consuming, but it is the parent’s job to stress the importance of a clean mouth, teeth and gums.

The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 41 percent of children aged 2 to 11 had tooth decay in their fi rst teeth. Dental caries are common among children, likely because they have not become profi cient at taking care of their teeth yet.

Soft, sticky foods are commonplace in young kids' diets and these can promote decay. Even well-intentioned gummy vitamins can be sources of dental decay. Oftentimes, these foods become lodged between the teeth or on the surface of molars. If left in contact with the teeth for too long, food particles become a source of carbohydrates for oral bacteria and cavities may appear as a result. Brushing isn’t enough to remove these sticky particles from the teeth and prevent potential bacteria from entering.

Encourage Children to Floss

Flossing is essential to making sure children do not experience cavities at an early age and it can establish practices that promote oral health throughout life. Despite being so important, many parents fail to encourage fl ossing or are at a loss as to how to make it enjoyable and effective. Some parents forget to fl oss their own teeth and encouraging their children to do so can result in better habits for the entire family.

Although regular dental fl oss is one of the fi rst tools for fl ossing, the dexterity required to wind the fl oss around little fi ngers, then thoroughly clean the teeth may discourage children. Parents can look into the wide array of fl ossing helpers available at the store. In fact, many age-appropriate fl ossers are now available that feature fun designs and smaller profi les to fi t into kids' mouths more easily. Flossers may be attached to a handle to make back teeth more accessible and promote more effective fl ossing. Manufacturers, such as DenTek, Butler GUM, Plackers Kids, Dr. Fresh, Oral-B and Brush Buddies, offer children's fl ossers.

Kids who shy away from fl ossing may be more likely to use a children's water fl osser. In lieu of string fl oss, a water fl osser uses a pressurized stream of water to dislodge food from between teeth. Although a water fl osser can be more messy, children may enjoy the opportunity to "play" with water and the cleaning sensation provided.

To prevent the buildup of plaque and the development of dental caries, parents should educate children about proper fl ossing techniques.

- Metro Services

To remove food particles from between the teeth, children must fl oss, advises the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists. It is recommended that parents help their children to fl oss as soon as two teeth are touching and continue to do so until the child is around the age of 8, when a child should have enough dexterity to do it on his or her own.

Children should learn that fl ossing is just as important as brushing.

Elaine’s Asian Bistro & Grill 8 Bond Street, Great Neck (516) 829-8883, elainesbistro.com

There is hardly a street on Long Island that one can travel to without seeing another restaurant. Out of all the restaurants on Long Island, one of the more enjoyable ones serving Asian cuisine is Elaine’s Asian Bistro & Grill in Great Neck.

Whether you are at Elaine’s for lunch or dinner, a business meeting, a romantic night out, a bridal shower or large party, you are sure to have a delightful time. Prepare to be impressed by the restaurant’s ambiance and service, as well as its uniquely delicious food and all of your choices on one menu. Incredibly, the restaurant’s prices are moderate. It’s not surprising that Elaine’s has become a popular gathering for those who enjoy quality Asian dining in an upscale setting.

If you arrive after 6:30 pm on a Saturday, you may fi nd yourself with a short wait — my party of four waited almost 15 minutes — however, it is not a problem. A circular bar in a romantic, low-light setting sits outside the main dining area where you can relax, talk and begin your evening with a cocktail, specialty drink or soft drink.

There are close to two dozen Starting Temptations (appetizers) from which to choose, as well as an array of starters from the Sushi Bar awaiting your call. Our waiter was a “walking menu,” familiar with every item he was questioned about. He also patiently took the time to ask us our likes and dislikes, and recommended dishes for each of us. He was quick to point out that many menu items are gluten-free, which came in handy for one of my guests. Our waiter’s knowledge and patience greatly enhanced our dining experience.

I went with an Eel & Avocado Roll ($6) and a Spicy Yellowtail Roll ($6.50). My wife went with an Avocado Salad ($6), while our guests went with the Sizzling Duck Crepe ($7 and very tasty) and the Thai Style Lump Crab Cakes ($9.50).

For the entrée, I decided on one of the evening’s specials: Chilean Sea Bass on a bed of Chinese vegetables, served with a Crab Meat Cake. It was outstanding. My wife had the plain grilled Filet of Scottish Salmon ($19), served with mixed veggies and a rice ball, while our guests had N.Y. Strip Steak Teriyaki ($24), served with mixed vegetables, sticky rice and a Sushi Platter ($18). The presentations of the entrées were artistic and all were fresh and prepared as ordered.

The most notable part of the evening was dessert. Our server inquired if we would like dessert, and of course, I nodded. The restaurant was crowded, so he politely asked if we would mind having it "on the house.” It was a nice way to address the situation, so we didn’t mind at all. The ice cream sundae we each enjoyed topped off a nice evening with good friends.

“Do you still want to be living at home with your parents at 30 years old?” asks Dr. Fikar, founder and director of Sancta-Fide Scholastic Test Prep. These are the kinds of questions young, high school students are encouraged to ask them-selves in order to begin preparing for the SAT early.

For over 20 years, Dr. Fikar has held private and group SAT tutoring sessions, nationwide and worldwide, for students as young as fourteen, all the way to high school seniors. He takes the SAT repeatedly and said, “I have seen it change over 20 years and I understand the test better than anyone. I’ve gotten to know its subtle details and I can focus my training on the trends I have seen, telling the kids what to expect and what not to expect.”

In the 120+ times Dr. Fikar has taken the SAT, he has scored perfectly on all but several and he offers the possi-bility of a perfect score to each of his students. He tutors

The closer students are to reaching a perfect score, the more important it is that they see Dr. Fikar. He can help them achieve the perfect score, as opposed to other places, where the students may have already scored higher than the instruc-tors. Once you have above a certain score, it is important to go to someone who can help you reach a perfect 2400.

“No one is truly perfect, but in the setting of standardized testing, if instructors continue to score perfectly, they are highly unlikely to give children wrong information. Instructors who do not score perfectly do not know how to teach a child the correct answer to a question they were unable to solve themselves. If you want someone who will never give your child wrong information, I’m the person to come to,” Dr. Fikar said.

Dr. Fikar stresses the importance of SAT scores in the col-lege admission process and how the focus on standardized testing has increased over the years. “The SAT is the most important factor in college admission, as opposed to years ago when it was grades. Due to grade infl ation, colleges don’t know what to make of high school transcripts anymore. Even smart students who are in the top 1% of their class have to work ten times harder, if they want to go to a school like Yale,” explained Dr. Fikar.

Due to the current economy, the colleges that students attend matter more than ever. Dr. Fikar stated “the unemployment rate for recent college graduates is much lower for those who attend Ivy League schools than for those who attend other institutions. Where you go to school makes a big difference. It’s a fact.”

In order for students to be able to attend the top schools of their choice, it is vital that they begin preparing early. “Kids need to start SAT prep in 9th grade and do it as often as pos-sible,” Dr. Fikar said. “You are much better off doing as much as you can, as early as you can.”

-Kristin Cacchioli

approximately 40-50 stu-dents per year and 1-2 of them receive a perfect score. “I’ve had 18 stu-dents score perfectly and many dozens have scored over 2300 or have seen at least a 500 point increase,” he said. “My students have gotten into Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford and Columbia, as well as West Point and Annapolis.”
