In 2001, the North Texas athletic department established bold initiatives to elevate university athletic programs to the exemplary level already evident in university academics. The result is one of the finest athletic villages in the nation.

The creation of the Mean Green Athletic Village was the most ambitious of those early initiatives. From a dream and a concept, this state-of-the-art complex has grown from one building, the 50,000-square-foot Athletic Center, to an athletic campus that is now home to six sports and will soon be the site of both practice and competition facilities for 13 of the 16 current Mean Green athletic teams.

At the center of the village is a 7,000-square-foot Student-Athlete Academic Center, outfitted with the latest technologies and ample space to provide student-athletes the opportunity to be successful off the field as well as on the field. With an on-site dormitory and cafeteria, this complex now allows North Texas student-athletes to eat, sleep, train, study, rehab, practice and compete on one site – all within 500 yards.

UNT’s progressive and strategic growth of its athletic programs was imperative to not only attract the best student-athletes, but also develop them to their highest level. The facilities now in place are producing significant results. Our new stadium will be a key contributor to continued success. BELIEVE IT!

“When I think of North Texas football greats like Otis Mitchell, Hayden Fry, Joe Greene, Abner Haynes, Patrick Cobbs, Ray Renfro, Johnny Quinn – and many others – and how they have inspired generations of young athletes, I believe our new stadium will honor their legacies and attract the kind of student-athletes that will create new legacies for the future.”

“All of the players in the National Football League love to brag about their alma maters, and I’m no different. I enjoyed my time at North Texas immensely and I’m always proud to tell people I played for the Mean Green. The only thing missing from my experience at North Texas was a football stadium that I can put up against those that my NFL teammates played in during their college days. When they talk about the amenities of their locker rooms and having their fans right on top of the action, I’m not a part of the conversation... yet! A new stadium at North Texas will be the final piece that makes a Mean Green football player’s total experience comparable to - or better than - any in the nation. I believe it!”

“I travel to colleges across America looking for talent, and I can tell you that great athletic facilities are the cornerstone of every nationally competitive and recognized school.

A new stadium for North Texas will be good for the entire university, students, alumni, fans, donors, neighbors, everybody. I sense the pride. And I feel the excitement.

Now is the time to move on our dream. Now is the time to believe.”

UNT boasts a history of stellar athletes and teams that includes national champions, Olympic medalists and Hall of Famers.

North Texas greats such as Abner Haynes, Don January, “Mean” Joe Greene, Hayden Fry, and Elmer and Delmer Brown charted a course that has been navigated over recent years by standouts Marilyn Marin, Chris Davis, Patrick Cobbs, Jailee Mitchell, Jamario Thomas, Casey Fitzgerald and many others.

In just the last eight years, Mean Green teams have been a part of four bowl games and have participated in NCAA postseason soccer and golf championships, as well as the NCAA basketball tournament for the second time in school history. Our track and field teams have had several athletes compete in the NCAA national indoor and outdoor meets. Both tennis and swimming programs have gained tremendous respect, garnering regional and national rankings while fielding some of the youngest teams in the country. Our men’s basketball teams have won 20 games for three consecutive years. And, over the last six years, five UNT student-athletes have led the nation in a category of their respective sports, with Brooke Engel topping the women’s volleyball charts for two consecutive years.

One thing is clear: As facilities have improved, so has team performance.

The list of all-stars who proudly wear the green and white will escalate as UNT’s commitment to new facilities provides student-athletes with the ability to excel and become champions. BELIEVE IT!

“One of the things that attracted me to UNT was the tremendous growth and vision of its athletic department. The new stadium certainly shows that we’re committed to providing nothing but the best for all of our student-athletes. I believe it will positively benefit our women’s basketball program.”

Welcome to Mean Green Nation, where the fervor to “bleed green” has always run deep, but the excitement is reaching farther and resonating louder than ever!

Fans excited about the growth of North Texas athletic programs have a lot to cheer about. With more conference championships and postseason play across all sports – women’s and men’s – students, alumni and families are gathering like never before to show their support. Six of the 10 largest crowds in North Texas athletic history have occurred since 2001, all painted up in green and white, waving Eagle claws, marching to Denton’s Courthouse Square in the Homecoming parade, singing around the annual bonfire and, of course, tailgating with enthusiasm.

Mean Green spirit also soared this past fall when students voted for a dedicated athletics fee – for the first time in university history – to support the growth of all North Texas athletic programs, and to help fund construction of our new stadium at Mean Green Village.

Green has gone off campus, too. Green pride is evident today throughout the Denton community, where banners line the main drags, Mean Green posters decorate storefronts and merchants cater to students.

It’s all part of a new winning attitude across Texas and across the nation – wherever UNT alumni and supporters are – that is bringing the Mean Green Nation together to fully claim the national recognition our university deserves. BELIEVE IT!

“We didn’t vote for just a new stadium, we voted for the future of UNT. We believe that having such a facility on our campus will enhance our lives as students and alumni. We’ve made an investment in this university by voting in favor of a new athletics fee. Now we challenge the alumni and friends of UNT to support this initiative, too.”

“As a football-loving alum, I’ve waited for years to build a new stadium for the Mean Green. All major universities gain publicity from their athletic programs, and prospective students often see an entire university through its athletic window. That’s just the way it is. Our new stadium will be a spectacular demonstration of UNT’s commitment to first-rate athletics. So come on, believe it… let’s build a new stadium!”

New Stadium FeaturesLocated at the junction of I-35 East and I-35 West, our new stadium will create a landmark entrance to the UNT campus and serve as a beacon of pride for all students, alumni and supporters.

The new structure will replace Fouts Field, the 57-year-old home of Mean Green football that was built at a time when accessibility and technology were not common features of college sports venues. In addition to lacking the amenities that attract today’s fans looking for the ultimate game-day experience, our deteriorating facility has been a deterrent to attracting some of the top student-athletes in Texas.

We’re proud to say that our new stadium is being planned according to strict, environmentally responsible construction standards, with the goal to earn Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. Among other great features:

North Texas Mean Green Village will become not only the place to be on Saturday afternoons, but also a destination spot for student programming, community events, high school contests of all types, graduations and conferences. Yes, our new stadium will be much more than just a place we win football games. And we will win. BELIEVE IT!

It’s Time to light McConnell Tower! After each athletic victory, students march to the Hurley Administration Building to fire up the green lights that adorn the rooftop tower, signifying another milestone for the Mean Green. Now the time has come to take one of the biggest and most image-enhancing steps in the history of not only our athletic program, but also the entire university. Both our administration and our student body acknowledge the importance of this new facility to the future of our university, and they have shown their support.

Now it’s time for our fans, alumni and friends to get in the game. Texas law does not allow state funds to be used for the construction of college athletic facilities, so private dollars are vital to our success. Although the recently-passed student fee, corporate partnerships and athletic department revenues will get us well down the road to completing this project, your gifts and commitments to UNT’s long-awaited landmark stadium will make what was only a dream seven years ago a reality in the very near future.

Won’t you join us? Play your role in this ultimate team effort and help us declare victory. And we’ll light the tower for years to come. Believe it!

“If you look at America’s great universities, you’ll see that they all have the three A’s in common: great academics, great arts and great athletics. All are key to a vibrant alumni community and continued growth. And all require great facilities. The need to replace our outdated football stadium has been a topic of conversation for years. I believe the time is now.”
