It is hard to believe that a year has already passed and my term

as President is coming to an end. What an ex-

perience this has been! I have had

the pleasure of work ing with some of the finest people in

our industry. WEAT – North Texas Section should be very proud of their accomplish-ments throughout the year. All of the dinner meet-ings have been a success with well attended meet-ings and interesting topics. The February Seminar proceeds continue to help support the NTS Scholar-ship and what a success it was!!! Several s tudents received NTS Scholarships this year. The plans are in the works for a new Darryl Hall Scholarship. The Electrical and Instrumentation Ad-Hoc Committee was s tar ted at the Section level in North Texas has become a WEAT state committee. Many of you stepped up to the plate to help with Science Fair judging, Texas Water 2007 activ ities and Water for People. All of these events could not have been possible without the officers, committee chairs and volunteers.

I would like to personally thank Randy McIn-trye, Amy Robinson, Tina Hanson, Darryl Corbin, Jody Zabolio, Dawn Anderson and Betty Jordan for serving on the Executive Committee. I believe their involvement is why the North Texas Section contin-ues to be one of the s trongest sections in the s tate. I would also like to thank CD and Priya Dhanapal for their hard work on the February Seminar. V.K. Gupta has done a wonderful job forming the Electr i-cal and Instrumentation Committee. David Jackson has continued to work on the Scholarship Committee while Rene Aguilar has s tepped up to the plate to

work on the Public Education Committee. Holly In-gram has done a wonderful job of producing the newsletter and website, Gilbert Trejo has continued to grow the Young Professionals, and Malcolm Cowdin has impressed us with his wonderful photog-raphy. Each one of these individuals helped make my term as President much easier and a wonderful learning experience. I know that volunteering takes time at of your personal and profess ional lives and I would like to thank all of your families and employers for allowing you the time to serve. I would like to thank the City of Denton Water Utilities Department and my boss, Frank Payne, for supporting my in-volvement in the organization. Finally, I would like to thank my husband, Ken and my family for their sup-port in helping me attend all of the NTS events while allowing me to keep my mind at ease with a new lit-tle one, Gage. I could not have done this without you.

The future for the organization is very bright with Randy McIntrye serving as President, Amy Rob-inson as President-E lect, Erin Flanagan as Secre-tary, Darryl Corbin as Treasurer, Dawn Anderson as Section Representative, and Betty Jordan as Past Section Representative. I wish all of them the best of luck with their new positions and know that they would welcome any suggestions on dinner meeting topics or February Seminar topics.

In closing, I would like to thank all of you for your support on this endeavor. I have been very blessed and it has been an honor and a pleasure to serve each and every one of you. I am looking for-ward to a wonderful May meeting presentation and hope to see all of you there.

At Texas Water 2007, the YPs held the Inaugural WEAT Student Design Competition. Considering the tight deadline for the students, two brave teams decided to take on the challenge and present their solutions at the Texas Water Conference. The design problem included an evaluation of the Dallas Water Utilities (DWU) Cen-tral Wastewater Treatment Plant (CWWTP). This plant currently treats approximately 150 million gallons per day (MGD) of municipal wastewater. Due to current and future projected influent flows, the CWWTP will re-quire an expansion to meet the treatment requirements of the increasing influent flows through the year 2030. The student teams were assigned to provide an evaluation of design a lternatives for this expansion. In their evaluations, the students focused on matrix evaluation criteria, biologica l nutrient removal for future ef-fluent criteria, engineer's opinion of probable construction cost, construction sequencing, peak flow manage-ment, odor control and a post-2030 expansion. Regarding judging, each of the teams were required to pre-sent at the Texas Water Conference and also submit an engineering notebook that contained drawings, calcu-lations, tables and other supporting documents. The judging panel consisted of two engineering consultants and two employees at the DWU CWWTP, Gary Strong and Regina Stencel. Congratulations to both Tarleton State University Teams for competing in the Inaugural WEAT Student Design Competition. The winning team won a paid trip to compete at WEFTEC 2007 in San Diego, California, and also received a Traveling Trophy to keep until next year's competition. In addition, money was also donated by WEAT to the Tarleton State University Civil Engi-neering Department to help start a WEF Student Charter. For Texas Water 2008, we look forward to seeing even more teams competing in the competit ion!

The Operations Challenge Competition at this year Texas Water Conference included three nationally competitive teams which served to keep spectators on the edge of their seats for all five events. Six teams competed for the Water Environment Association of Texas’ State title and the chance to represent Texas at the National Competition at WEFTEC.07 in San Diego; The Trinity River Authority CReWSers, The San Antonio Water System’s Power SAWS, the City of Dallas, Aquatechs, the City of Austin’s Dillo XXpress, the Brazos River Authority’s Brazos Basin Boys and the newest team from the City of Fort Worth, The Regulators. In recent years, Texas teams have developed a strong repu-tation at the national level. The CReWSers have won the Division I National Championship for the past two. Last year, the Power SAWS took first place in Division II at the national competition with the Dallas Aqua Techs taking sec-ond. At April ’s state competition, the CReWSers were defending their tenth state title. It quickly became apparent that the Aquatechs and the Power SAWS were trying to knock the CReWSers off their long-held throne. For a moment, it looked like it might happen when the Aqua Techs handily beat all comers in the collections event . The CReWSers, never a team to rest on their laurels, poured on the steam to come back and finish first in four of the remaining five events. See the score sheet included here for scoring on each event and the overall final scores. The CReWSers

2007 TEXAS STATE OPERATIONS CHALLENGE SCORE RESULTS Event Time (in seconds) / Point Conversion / Ranking

Growing Number of Solid Teams Compete at 2007 Texas Water Operations Challenge

won first overall with the Aquatechs coming in second and the Power SAWS taking third. Austin’s DilloXXpress got fourth, the Fort Worth Regulators took fifth and the Brazos Basin Boys were sixth. The top three Texas teams will be competing against each other in Division I at the National Competition next Octo-ber. Expect to see some fireworks a s each team strives to be the next Division I National Champion. A word about the new kids on the block; as a rule, new teams rarely do well in their first year of competition but the Fort Worth Regulator’s proved to be an exception. Specta-tors and competitors alike were talking about the new team’s solid performance. Ginny Farmer from AutoWash of Colorado, the Maintenance Event Co-Chair for the Texas competition as well as the WEF National Event coordinator, was pleased with the performance of the Regulators and proclaimed them the best first year team that she has ever seen. This is quite a compliment coming from a long-time, heavily-involved supporter of the Operations Challenge. Every year, the quality of the Texas teams improves. Texas can be proud to be represented by these highly-competitive teams. Each team member is a professional in the waste-water industry and deserves all of the accolades they re-ceive. Operations Challenge teams are grateful for your support. Your continued support is needed if we are to real-ize our goal of once again sending five of the six teams to the National Competition in October.
