2013 Summer Fun All Set!Looking for some great outdoor family summer fun? Pack up a picnic basket

and spend some time at the park. Never gone on a picnic before? Not to worry. Here are some tips on what you need to pack.

The best part of picnics is the food. For the best results, choose food that is easy to make and clean up. Store food in containers with tight-fitting lids and place them in large bags to contain spills.

Of course, you don’t want any of that food to spoil, so steer clear of dishes that won’t hold up under warm temperatures. Skip salads made with mayonnaise and leave the ice cream cake at home. Should you bring food that must be kept cold or hot, use coolers or hot packs. Pack just enough of the food you need and leave the rest at home in the refrigerator.

Chill foods long before the picnic and pack them in an insulated cooler with ice.

Place meat in a separate cooler to avoid cross-contamination. When transporting your coolers, put them in your air-conditioned back seat, not in your hot trunk.

Pack all other food in a strong, sturdy picnic basket. Place a small hand towel on bottom to catch any spills and put heavy items on the bottom and lighter ones on the top to prevent crushing. Keep items cool by inserting frozen bottles of wa-ter among them. Make sure you bring all of the necessities, including condiments, utensils, plates, napkins and some wet wipes. Top off the basket with a blanket to spread on the picnic table or the ground.

Depending upon how long you intend to stay at the park, you may need several other items. You might need sunscreen to prevent sunburn and bug repellent to keep the bugs at bay. You might also need some hand sanitizer to eliminate germs and some garbage bags to collect trash. If you are planning to grill, you

might need some charcoal, lighter fluid, matches, grilling tools and a meat ther-mometer. Make sure you use a strong canvas tote for any additional items you need.

Once at the park, unload everything quickly and set up for the picnic. Get the fire going for whatever you intend to cook and make sure you check the internal temperature of all meat before removing it from the grill. Be sure you throw out any food left out longer than an hour to prevent food poisoning.

When you have finished with your picnic, pack up and dispose of all trash properly. Make sure the fire in the grill is extinguished and leave no signs that you were there.

Going on a picnic can be great fun as long as you pack accordingly and take precautions when grilling. Good luck and enjoy!
