Northbrook will host the South Oakland Shelter (SOS) at the church from January 25th through January 31st. We will be partnering with SOS to provide temporary lodging and food to those facing homelessness.
This is a wonderful program, and we are excited to take on this special project this January. We will need a great deal of assistance as we open up our church and our hearts during this week.
Throughout January, there will be sign-up sheets available after worship for the many areas we will require assistance. We have many volunteer opportunities for all. In addition, we will need funds for food and transportation. Please consider making a check payable to Northbrook Presbyterian Church with “SOS” in the memo line of the check.
If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Barb Stetson at [email protected] or at (248)302-3033.
For more information about the South Oakland Shelter, please visit their website at www.southoaklandshelter.org.
PWN Boutique and Mini Alternative Gift Market Sale On Sunday, January 18 during coffee hour, a variety of beautiful goods will
be available for sale to benefit the South Oakland Shelter group that we will
be hosting January 25 through January 31. We will accept cash, checks or
credit to pay for your choices as well as for donations to help support SOS!

Lenten Small Group Gatherings – Want to be engaged in thoughtful, honest, open discussions about the Bible and the Christian faith in this 21st century? Interested in learning with others about what our faith means and why it matters? Willing to take some time each week to invest in your spiritual growth and friendships with other people who want to do the same thing? Our hope is to form a number of small self-directed groups of up to 8 people each to meet in living rooms, restaurants, coffee shops or any other welcoming space, using We Make the Road by Walking: A Quest for Spiritual Formation, Reorientation, and Activation. This book, by critically acclaimed author Brian McLaren, offers an opportunity to cultivate an intelligent understanding of
the Bible and of Christian faith today in conversation with others. Each chapter is self-contained and provides scripture readings, insightful reflections, and discussion questions designed to challenge, stimulate and encourage faith. Groups will meet for the six weeks of Lent which begins on February 18. The book costs $17.95 hardcover, or you can buy a Kindle edition for $11.04.
If you are interested in being part of this experience, please contact Rev. Marjorie at [email protected] or look for sign-up sheets in the Narthex.
Advent & Christmas
The church was certainly a busy place this Advent and Christmas season. There were many things for all ages to do.
Cookies & Carols On Sunday, December 14th, our 3rd annual worship with Cookies and Carols was filled with songs of the holiday season. Held in Fellowship Hall, the tables were filled with people worshipping and singing and enjoying the delicious cookies found all around the room.
ADVENTure at LOGOS Next came ADVENTure for the younger LOGOS kids. On two LOGOS evenings, the children gathered after dinner to create their ADVENTure crafts. They made a nativity scene from blocks and lovely angel ornaments. Each block held the picture of a character from the Christmas story and can be moved around as the children share the old, old story with their families. Thanks to Kathy and Michael Bauhof, Lori Sandercock, Terri Hurbis and Tracey Watt for their help with this event.
Advent & Christmas
Christmas Senior Souper Supper The Souper Senior Christmas Supper was held on December 11. Judy and Phil Owen decorated each table and welcomed everyone with a festive atmosphere and happy smiles. Judy prepared a homemade meal, and it was delicious! After dinner, she shared a Christmas story and encouraged everyone to pop their Christmas poppers in which everyone found little treats and a crown to wear. It was a great night of conversation and fun for our seniors.
These are a Few of My Favorite Things On Sunday evening December 7, the women of the church gathered for Northbrook’s annual Favorite Things party. Thanks to Peggie Schiller for hosting this event. During an evening of delicious hors d’oeuvres, laughter and conversation, each guest chose a Favorite Things gift and heard the story of why that gift was a favorite of theirs.
Advent & Christmas
Advent Pageant a Success The Advent Pageant, A Time of Waiting, took place on December 21 during worship. An intergenerational pageant, the children and adults practiced during LOGOS and again on Saturday, December 20. Everyone worked hard to make this a beautiful worship event celebrating the waiting time up until the birth of Jesus on Christmas. The children learned the importance of this time and of the lives of Elizabeth and Zechariah and why there was no baby Jesus in the pageant. Thank you to all the planners and participants of this wonderful event.

A Book Discussion with The Reverend Faith Fowler of Cass Community Social Services
and author of This Far by Faith: Twenty Years at Cass Community
The Mission Connection Committee is continuing to take orders of Faith’s book, a
collection of stories and experiences from her work at Cass Community Social Services in
Detroit. Faith opens a Cass window for us, allowing us to view the organization's impact
on the community and on individuals, telling stories in ways that are both poignant and
humorous. The book costs $20. Sign-ups/book sales will take place in Fellowship Hall
following worship services. For more information, contact Winnie Davies-Hancock at
(248)593-8035 or [email protected]. Order your book soon so you have time to read
it before joining us for the time with Faith in February.
2014 Angel Tree Christmas is a Wrap On December 13, the Angel Tree gifts were gathered up from under the tree and sorted and labeled and loaded into the trailer for delivery. Thank you to members of the congregation and friends who gave so generously to give Christmas to families of Oakland Family Services, to the guests of Fort Street Open Door in Detroit who received warm clothing of all varieties and also to the youth living at A Place of Refuge in Southfield who look forward each year to Northbrook’s Christmas gifts. Special thanks to Tricia and Frank LaSota, Sue and Tim Boese, Karen Vander Weide, Ken Stetson, Joyce Vander Weide, the Tengler family, Cindy Sowle, Chris Leuck and all the youth who worked so hard to make the Angel Tree a success!

Alternative Gift Market News Thank you to everyone who helped out at the “Mini" Alternative Gift Market on Sunday, December 7. Taking into account the November and December market days and additional sales in between the two, we have taken in over $4,400 in sales of items and donations. Congregational Life Northbrook Book Club The next Northbrook Book Club Meeting will be on Monday, January 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the Library to discuss The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. In simple terms, the book is the fictionalized history of the Grimké sisters, Sarah and Angelina (Nina), who were at the forefront of the abolitionist and women's rights movements, wound around the intriguing narrative of a young slave, Hetty, who was given to Sarah as an 11th birthday present. Sarah despises slavery, even at that early age, and out of principle attempts to reject the gift. The Northbrook Book Club meets every 6 weeks on Monday and is always looking for new readers!
Please mark your calendars with 2015 dates and scheduled books: January 12—Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd
February 23—Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot April 6—Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh May 18—Where’d you go Bernadette by Maria Semple
June 29—Perfect Match by Jodi Picoult August 10—Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick

How to Send your Child to College
without Going Broke!
Learn the Secrets to College Admissions
and Financial Aid Strategies that
Colleges Don’t Want You to Know
The Northbrook Adult Education Committee is offering an event led by
our own Dan Gross, Strategic Business Consultant. Dan is an Advisor/
Coach for SET for College helping families determine the best overall
plan to pay for college.
He will present this special session for parents of high school and middle
school students on Thursday, January 22 from 7:00—8:00 p.m. .
Sending your child to college takes planning and an understanding of
the process in order for it to be a successful and financially feasible
undertaking. Getting into and paying for college is a “game” with
“rules.” Not knowing the rules of the game could cost a family tens of
thousands of dollars in college costs that they otherwise would not have
had to pay had they “known and played by the rules.”
Come to this event and bring your friends to find out…
A few of the topics covered:
The 5 ways to pay for college
Understand how the Financial Aid “game” is played
Understand your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and the total cost to
put all your children through school
How to pick colleges that will give you the best financial aid packages
How to send your child to an expensive private university for less than a
state school
How to position your student and your finances in the best way possible so
that you can be certain that you will qualify for the maximum amount of
money from each school
Plus: Receive a free college planning checklist just for attending

Oh my....January....2015 begins
I walked into her beautiful appointed living room and said "Oh my".
The fireplace held a welcome fire. There were no electric lights. The entire room was glowing with candles of all sizes and shapes. Their candle holders were pieces of art. Candle light reflected on tables and paintings. Upholstered furniture seemed to absorb the this light and became alive in their colors.
I was in awe. Right then, I decided I would use more candles in my home every day. I too love candles. There is a certain something about candles which seems to sooth and comfort. They bring a calm although they are aflame. Perhaps that is why we see candles in churches. God calms us yet He inspires us to "fire up", and become stronger believers in Him.
We usually watch TV at night. Off will go the lamps. We will light the candles and enjoy the calm and beauty of their glow. All will be well.
I have a beautiful new candle. Her holder is a pine cone. Lift the lid, and there she is waiting to be lighted and give us joy.
May your 2015 be filled with good health. friends, family, church family and candles. Then you too will say....OH My.
Blessings from my house to your house,
Rose
Knit Wits Our Witty Northbrook Knitters have enjoyed another year of knitting, conversation and new ideas during our Wednesday evening meetings. We have worked on individual projects for ourselves and families as well as donated items which were part of the Alternative Gift Market. We are grateful to those who have contributed to our merchandise selection who are not part of our regular meetings. We were happy that all of our proceeds were put into
the Mission Committee Fund to be used in a charitable way.
We will continue in 2015 with our prayer shawls and chemo caps and possibly some new projects that can be donated. We are always open to helping beginning knitters and crocheters to expand their skills. These activities are not only rewarding in the production and creative process but can be stress relieving and therapeutic. All are welcome to join us. We meet in the library at 7 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. Our next meetings will be on January 14 and January 28 this month.
We thank all those who have purchased items during the Gift Market. We are always open to suggestions for the future! A Happy New Year to all!
Children and Youth Education
Northbrook Preschool children had a wonderful time preparing for Christmas. We were making surprises, singing songs and making wonderful Christmas decorations. We put hats and gloves on the mitten tree, and Santa came to visit. This month we will be painting our feet blue and making foot prints. Also, we look forward to “Pp” week where we wear our pajamas to school and eat popcorn for snacks!
The Enrollment process for the 2015-2016 school year has begun. Please tell your friends and neighbors about our wonderful preschool. We would be happy to answer questions and have anyone come and visit us.
Look at our Northbrook Preschool Facebook page and be sure to like us! Check us out!! For more information, contact Kerry Callaghan, Director, at (248)642-0200, ext. 16., www.northbrookpreschool.com or [email protected].
