A. Sam, the fact that you arethinking before doing proves that youare astute; misguidedsince you ask me foradvice, but astute.Let’s start with
the assumption thatyou have a gasfurnace, a gas waterheater, an electricalpanel and a watersoftener that youwish to enclose.Code will requirethat you providespace in front ofthese appliances forfolks trying to workon them.Allow three feet
in front of the furnace and electrical
panel. There is no required orsuggested workspace around the waterheater and softener. However if yourplumber is a fat guy (and Indiana istopping the chart in populationobesity), you might want to leave thesame kind of access around these itemsas well. It will prove to be expensiveenough to replace a failed waterheater; don’t add to the misery bymaking it hard to get at.The door to your new mechanical
room would be best at 36 inches.Anyone bigger than that shouldn’t bein there and anything in there willeasily fit out through that opening. Ifyou want to isolate the sound yourequipment is making, definitelyinsulate the wall.Now we need to talk combustion
air. Your furnace creates hot air, kindof like having your own personalpolitician in the basement all winterlong. When the furnace runs, or the
water heater for that matter, they useair out of the house for the oxygenrequired to fire the appliance. Theburning of the gas creates carbonmonoxide that is vented to the outsidethrough the flue pipe. If the area theseappliances draw air from is too small,back drafting can occur. That’s good inNASCAR but a terrible hazard to thehome’s inhabitants when it’s flue gas.Your HVAC contractor can show youhow to provide adequate makeup air toyour mechanical room.So let’s review: adequate space to
work on stuff, insulate for sound, threefoot door, skinny plumber, combustionair. And get a pool table — it looksgreat in a basement.

appearing on doorsteps around the country.As vibrant shades of orange fill theoutdoors, they’re also becoming increas-ingly popular inside.Upholstery fabrics, paint colors,
furniture and accessories that range fromneon orange to tangerine to terra cotta aregetting attention this season.But orange isn’t for everyone.When
interior designers suggest decorating withorange, clients can get nervous. DesignerKyle Schuneman often eases homeownersinto using orange by suggesting variationson it.“The idea of orange can sound juvenile
and unsophisticated,” Schuneman says.“But if you go with umbers, burnt bricksor terra cottas, you can sell a client on theidea much easier.”The key, he says, is using orange
creatively and carefully.Here, Schuneman and designers Brian
Patrick Flynn and Betsy Burnham offertips on decorating with the color orange,and avoiding the pitfalls of using it badly.
How much to use?Orange can be overpowering as the
main color in a room. But, like red, itworks brilliantly as an accent color.“I don’t suggest painting your walls
orange,” Burnham says. “But maybethere’s an orange in the print on yourpillows.”It can be casual (“maybe you bring in a
garden stool that’s bright orange”), or chicand sophisticated (“think of Hermesorange, those shopping boxes”), she says.In a bedroom with muted, gray-blue
walls, Burnham opted to add lacqueredend tables in a rich shade of orange.Orange paint can also be a great way to
spruce up a dated piece of furniture.“Think about painting a great old chest
of drawers a beautiful shade in a highgloss,” Schuneman says, “and changingout the knobs to really special crystalknobs to make a statement piece in aroom.”
Which shades are best?All three designers like earthy burnt
orange tones that are almost as brown asthey are orange.“With a burnt orange, you’d be
surprised what the paint chip looks like,”Burnham says. “It looks more like abrown. But you paint a piece of furniturethat color, and it reads orange. It does whatit’s supposed to do — it brings somewhimsy.”Flynn also likes using red-orange,
“ideal for more youthful or edgy rooms.”The style of your home may help
determine which shades you choose, saysSchuneman. “Terra cotta is a beautifulbackdrop for a traditional or retro feelingspace, while pops of a more neon orangecould be really fun for a modern space.”Whatever tone you choose, Schuneman
suggests testing a sample if you’ve decidedto take the plunge and paint with orange.“Try three or four different shades,” hesays, and view them in various types ofdaylight and artificial light.Also, he says, “orange is a lot like red
when you’re painting, so you’re going toneed three or four coats to get an evenfinish. But the end product will be abeautiful cozy space.”Just one word of warning: “Don’t go
with a true shade of orange,” Schunemansays. “It will feel like ‘Pee-Wee’sPlayhouse.’”
Where does it work?Orange can look good anywhere in
your home, but these designers say it’sespecially beautiful for bedrooms.“Orange is my favorite choice for kids’
rooms, because it’s totally gender-neutral,”Flynn says. “My favorite combo for a kids’space is tangerine and white. It’s clean andclassic.”Schuneman agrees: “I love a warm
shade of orange for a bedroom.My lastbedroom was a burnt brick. It felt so warmand cozy,” he says. “It really works wellwith dim lighting at night, but also caninvigorate you to wake up in the morning.”Burnham is using orange and white
gingham print draperies, along with navyblue and dark denim upholstery, todecorate the bedroom of a pre-teen boy.“It’s boyish, but sophisticated,” she says.“Not over-the-top country or anything. Sortof preppy.”
What goes with orange?“I love pairing gray with orange,”
Schuneman says. “It immediately amps upthe hip factor and brings it into a contem-
porary setting. It works well because grayhas a cool base, where orange is warm. Sothe balance really creates harmony in aroom.”Along with pale grays and deep
charcoals, orange also goes well with darkand light blues and also browns, taupe,cream or white.Burnham cautions against pairing
orange with other tropical colors or otherharvest colors, like red and yellow. Theroom can easily begin to feel as thoughyou’ve taken those themes too far.Rather than piling on all the fall colors
at once, Schuneman suggests pairingorange only with brown: “I think you cancreate a really beautiful monotone room ofcreams, off whites and browns,” he says,“and pop it with orange to create a cozyfeel. Use different textures in these similarcolor tones … jutes, velvets and linens forthat cozy fall feel.”

Gardeners love to have live plants aroundthem and now that our outdoor growingseason is pretty much over, we can concentrateon our indoor plants. African violets, one ofAmerica’s favorite houseplants, are verydesirable for the indoorgardener. They havebeautiful flowers thatresemble small bouquetsand easily spruce up anydecor. They producespectacular blooms allthroughout the spring,summer and fall months.The brightly coloredvelvet-leaved tropicalAfrican violets are nativeplants of the coastalregions of Tanzania.They were brought tothis country by a captainin the German ImperialArmy in 1892 andbecame an immediate hitwith gardeners.
African violets may be forgiving, but arenot foolproof so you need a few basicgardening skills to be successful with them.The worst things you can do to African violetsare to not provide proper watering and
lighting conditions.African violets like room temperature
water and do not like to have wet leaves. Thesoil needs to be moist but take care not to letthe soil become soggy. This can cause root rotand serious problems for the plant. Properlighting is important in getting the plant toproduce flowers. African violets love around12 to 16 hours of light a day. An east facingwindow usually will provide an adequatesupply of light. The professional growers andthe seriously addicted use grow lights for bestresults. If possible, place the pots about 12inches from the window glass so the sundoesn’t get too hot or too cold. A temperatureof 60 to 70 degrees is an ideal range forAfrican violets.
Good air circulation is needed for theAfrican violets overall health, but they do notlike to be placed in a draft. Humidity is to beencouraged when raising African violets andthis can be accomplished by setting the pots intrays filled with gravel and topped off withwater. Make sure the plants feet are not sittingin water making the soil become soggy. As thewater evaporates, ambient humidity is created,producing an ideal environment for Africanviolets.
Your plants need to be fed weekly. Aspecially formatted fertilizer for African
violets available at plant centers in a concen-trated liquid. A few drops to a quart of water isrecommended. Follow directions on package.
Keep the plants well groomed and checkthem over for signs of disease and insects. Ifeither is found, they may be treated with anappropriate insecticide or fungicide powderpurchased at plant centers.
Your African violet will be happy in a fourinch or a six-inch pot for quite a while, but canbecome over crowded. When this happens,repot it in the next size larger pot using a goodloose potting soil for good drainage and aircirculation. The potting soil can be purchasedat plant centers or you can make your ownmix. Vermiculite is a good additive to keep thesoil loose.
Armed with these suggestions, and a littlebit of luck, you could become an expert onAfrican violets.

With the holidays approaching, a newchandelier could be a fun and affordable wayto make over the dining room, said Roberts,a Minneapolis designer who organized achandelier fashion show at the home andgarden show in that city earlier this year.
Michelle Jennings Wiebe, president ofStudio M Interior Design in Tampa, Fla.,agreed, saying a dining room should be aboutmore than the table and chairs.
“You really need that piece that caps it offand makes it special,” she said. “It’s almostlike a piece of artwork.”
Chandelier shoppers have plenty ofchoices these days. Chandeliers come in avariety of styles, and can range in price froma few hundred dollars to tens of thousands.
“We have a lot of fun picking them out,”Wiebe said. “It’s a way to make a specialimpression.”
New manufacturing techniques have ledto the creation of designs and shapes thatpreviously were not possible, said JosephRey-Barreau, an architect and lightingdesigner and a professor at the University ofKentucky in Lexington.
Trends include jewel tones, geometric-inspired pieces, retro fixtures and the use oflamp shades, these lighting experts said.
Roberts included several colorful chande-liers at her show. She favors deep jeweltones, and showed one piece made out ofblack cut crystal. A chandelier can addsophistication or whimsy to a home, she said.
The decor featured on the television show“Mad Men” has created more interest inMid-century Modern, said Wiebe, and manyof her clients are choosing slim, sleek piecesreminiscent of the 1950s and ’60s.
In Florida, shell, coral or other nature-inspired lighting also is a common choice,she said.
Shannon Cantor so appreciates theseashell-inspired chandelier in her condo inRedington Beach, Fla., that she put avariation of it in her second home, in Tampa.She said she and her husband wantedsomething they would enjoy looking at everyday.
“We walk by it a lot,” said. “You wantsomething that grabs your attention. It’sgoing to be there for a long while.”
Rey-Barreau called lamp shades onchandeliers “a very, very fashionable trend,”from lights surrounded by a single, rounddrum shade (a little like a hanging tablelamp) to a group of mini drum shadescovering each bulb. Some chandeliers haveremovable shades, so you can use them ornot.
When helping clients choose a chandelier,Wiebe considers the size of the room and thestyle of the home. But she also reminds themthat the fixtures have a job to do.
“First and foremost it’s for lighting,” shesaid.
For instance, will a table with lightingoverhead be used mostly for eating or willchildren be doing homework there?
“You really need to think about what youare going to do with the fixture,” said Rey-
Barreau.He offered these chandelier tips:— Always put chandeliers on a dimmer
switch. This makes them more functional andcan help set a mood in the dining room.
— To determine what size chandelier isneeded, add the width of the room to thelength of the room in feet, and then convertthat number to inches for a chandelier’sdiameter. A 10-by-20-foot room, for instance,would require a chandelier with a diameter ofabout 30 inches.
— In a room with 8-foot ceilings, chande-liers are normally hung about 30 inchesabove the table. For every additional foot ofceiling height, raise the fixture 3 inches.
— When shopping for a chandelier askwhether it is part of a “lighting family.” Somemanufacturers have developed series offixtures designed to complement each other.The line may include other options forconsideration for other rooms.

There are two varieties, softneck andhardneck (also knownas topset). Hardneckvarieties produce aflower stalk called ascape and usuallyproduce fewer, largercloves than the softneckvarieties which do notproduce a flower stalk.Softneck varieties aregenerally consideredmore productive thanthe hardneck varietiesin that all their energygoes into producing abulb rather than a bulband a flower stalk.
Garlic seed requiresa cold treatment for the best shoot and bulbdevelopment and therefore it isrecommended that it be planted in October.
It can be planted in the spring but itneeds to be done very early. If planted in thefall the seed needs enough time to growroots and a little shoot, but not so much thatthe shoot is visible above the soil line, by thefirst hard freeze. The individual cloves fromthe garlic bulbs are separated and planted,pointed end up, about 3 inches deep and 6inches apart, either in beds or rows.
Planting the garlic purchased insupermarkets is not recommended as thatparticular variety may not be well adaptedfor growing in our climate zone. It is best toobtain disease free seed garlic from a seedsupplier.
Garlic likes to grow in cool temperaturesand in fertile, well drained soil. Garlic has ashallow root system and is therefore incompetition with whatever weeds seedssprout and try to take over.
Timely, shallow cultivation is a must.Mulching with weed free straw afterplanting will help protect the seed during thewinter months and conserve moisture andcontrol weed emergence during the growingseason.
You may like to remove the mulch in the
spring to allow the soil to warm faster, thenreplace the mulch when the shoots are about6 inches tall to control the weeds.
You can tell when garlic is ready toharvest when the lower leaves start to turnbrown or by digging a bulb up and checkingto see if the cloves have filled the skins.When ready, the bulbs should be dug withthe roots and shoots still attached.
Set them aside in a well ventilatedbuilding to cure for about 3 to 4 weeks.After the shoots and roots have dried down,the shoots should be cut back to about 1 inchabove the bulb and the roots should betrimmed close to the base.
