Lisa’s art driven by natural inspiration From page 1
“I love the strength and majes-
tic beauty of its branches and the
shade it provides is brilliant in the
scorching summers.”
“Rosie” and farm life in general
have infl uenced Lisa’s art for many
years.
“When we fi rst moved back, my
brother gave me an old wooden
chair and I painted a bright little
farm scene on it,” she said.
“I tried a few welcome signs
and did up other old bits of furni-
ture and whatever else I could slap
paint on.”
That led to Lisa having a stall
at the Oxley Bush Market and her
new business venture really took
off with people ordering chairs
which Lisa painted their own farms
and houses on.
“It’s an individual piece of art-
work that they can display as well
as use practically in their homes,
or take it with them when they’ve
moved away from that place that
they loved so much,” she explained.
In addition to local homes, Lisa’s
paintings take pride of place in
houses in New Zealand, England,
Germany, Singapore and the Neth-
erlands.
Her murals can also be found
in a number of businesses includ-
ing the Milawa Hotel, Milawa Mus-
tards, a childcare centre and an
olive farm.
It was the knowledge of these
artworks which prompted another
local – interior designer Kate Not-
tingham of City to Country Design
– to contact Lisa to paint the en-
chanted forest theme she envis-
aged for the entrance to the kids’
area in the re-design of the Wanga-
ratta High Country Library.
“The goal was to create some-
thing beautiful that attracted not
only the kids but the parents too,”
Kate said.
“I absolutely love the playfulness
of Lisa’s art and the intricate details
that overlay her bold colours.
“I thought she was the perfect
artist for this job.”
Lisa admitted that the biggest
challenge for her with the mural
at the library has been the height
factor.
“I hate heights, but luckily I have
a very tall Dad and he helped out a
lot, doing the base coat for me on
day one. I don’t know what I would
have done without him,” she said.
“I am very honoured to work
with Kate’s vision and colour pallet.
“It’s something diff erent for me
as I’m used to big bright colours
but the library is much softer native
bush tones. But Kate’s belief in me
and my work really helps.”
As does the belief from Lisa’s
family; husband Steve is her big-
gest supporter and has backed her
every step of the way.
“We are an awesome team,” she
said.
“Whatever crazy thing I come up
with he fi nds a way to make it all
happen and sorts out the practical
side of things.
“He is the one that suggested
I open my little shop in Chiltern
which has been the best move I
ever made.”
Daughters Grace, 19, and Violet,
17, also inspire Lisa.
“I see their diff erent stages in life
come out in my work constantly,”
she said.
“Grace is a barber by trade but
also draws fantastically and has a
keen eye for detail, while Violet,
who is hoping to one day become
a paramedic, works in the shop and
has her own style and clientele.”
Lisa holds painting workshops
at her shop/studio in Chiltern and
said she loved teaching people to
“not stress about a blank canvas
and splash a bit of paint around for
the fun of it. It’s all about the fun for
me”.
