Les Chandler, Chair of Settle District U3A in Yorkshire, UK, brings us a view from the other side of the world.

The BBC is reporting that it's very hot in Sydney at the moment but here in England it's cold, wet and grey. We’re always on the

lookout for something to make us smile at this time of year, especially with the coronavirus adding to the gloom. We are now in a period of Tier 4 lockdown, we have short days and no U3A face to face activities happening at present; therefore we have

turned to our TV screens for consolation.

The Crown on Netflix has provided some laughs but it was another tale about the Queen which caught my eye this week. A few years back Her Majesty visited Harlow New Town, just north of London, and the Mayor was deputed to accompany her on a

tour of the town. Returning to the Town

Hall the pair passed, in the entrance, a cabinet full of the Town Council’s gleaming civic regalia. “Do you ever get to wear the robe and chains?” asked the Queen. “Oh, yes” said the

Mayor. “On special occasions.” Oh dear!

I hope you had a better time this Christmas

than the Queen had on her trip to Harlow.

A small group of members gathered together on the

shores of Narrabeen Lagoon on a cool Christmas Day to

share delicious fare and renew friendships .... and a good time was had by all!

A big thank you to Bob and Deb Hunter for the loan of

their table and for the Christmas crackers .... and thanks to Ian Thompson for

taking this photo.

If you are aware of a member who is sick or in

hospital, please contact our Welfare

Officer - either by email to Gaye Pringle or on 0407 248 331
