LEPHALALE - Die S-draaie tussen die berge op die R510 (Thabazimbi-pad) het Saterdag 11 Februarie nog lewens geëis met ‘n kop-aan-kop botsing tussen ‘n brandstoftenker en ‘n laebed-swaarladingvoertuig. Een van die voertuie het vermoedelik aan die verkeerde kant van die pad om die draai gegaan.

Volgens die polisie het die brandstoftenker aan die brand geslaan en het daar drie mense in die ongeluk gesterf. Hulle was onherkenbaar verbrand en hul identiteite kon nie bevestig word teen druktyd nie. Vermoedens bestaan dat daar dalk meer as drie mense omgekom het, maar hierdie inligting kon ook nie teen druktyd bevestig word nie.

Slegs een persoon kon vinnig genoeg uit die brandende wrakke kom en was vir geringe beserings behandel.

Die pad was vir ure lank gesluit terwyl die brandweer die vlamme onder beheer gebring het en opruimingswerk aan die gang was. Dit het die res van die naweek geneem om al die wrakstukke te verwyder. Teen Maandagoggend was die pad weer oop vir normale verkeer.

Meer as 80% van skole in Limpopo het nog geen geld van die Provinsiale departement van onderwys ontvang nie. Faan Visagie, provinsiale bestuurder van die Federasie van Beheerliggame van Suid-Afrikaanse Skole (Fedsas) in Limpopo, het hierdie week aan Noordelike Nuus gesê daar is skole in die Waterberg Distrik wat nie hulle elektriesiteit en water kan betaal nie.

Sommige van die skole se bankrekenings gaan nou gesluit word omdat daar geen fondse meer in is nie.

Visagie vertel dat beheerligame van skole moet pa staan om die situasie te beredder. Hy het spesifiek die skool op Marken genoem waar elektrisiteit en water uit skoolfondse betaal moet word. “Die Waterbergdistrik word erg geraak deur kontantvloeiprobleme by skole,” meen hy.

Intussen het Noordelike Nuus by verskeie hoofde wat verlede week ‘n vergadering met Fedsas belê het gehoor dat nog geen van die nuwe handboeke vir Gr 1, 2, 3 en 10 ontvang is nie. Handboeke wat in September bestel moes word is weens begrotingstekorte nooit bestel nie. Volgens die DA-leier in Limpopo, Desire van der Walt het die provinsiale departement R600 miljoen nodig gehad om boeke te bestel. Hulle het by die nasionale regering aansoek gedoen vir ‘n lening maar dit is afgekeur en die departement is saam met vier ander departemente onder administrasie geplaas.

Van der Walt vertel ook dat geen dienste verskaffers weens die ingryping van die Nasionale regering betaal word nie.

“Niemand vat verantwoordelikheid nie. As jy met die provinsiale departement praat sê hulle net hulle hande is afgekap - dit is nou ‘n nasionale aangeleentheid.”

Visagie het bevestig dat daar tans baie frustrasie heers. Hy vertel dat sedert Ron Swartz as administrateur bedank het, die departement onbereikbaar is.

“Jy kry net nie antwoorde nie, ek praat gereeld met hoofde en hulle voel magteloos.”

Van der Walt meen dat ‘n groot gebrek aan kundigheid in die departement is. “Moet my nie verkeerd verstaan nie, daar is wonderlike, hardwerkende mense in die departement en self hulle is baie gefurstreed met die situasie. Maar daar is ook mense in posisies wat nie kundig genoeg is om die werk te doen nie. Ons kinders lei daaronder.

Onderwys ramp?volg van bladsy 1

“Elke kind sonder ‘n handboek word ontneem van hulle grondwetlike reg tot goeie onderig. Onderwys is seker die belangrikste aspek van ‘n samelewing en hierdie kinders se toekoms en die families vir wie hulle eendag sal sorg is in gedrang.”

Intussen het dit aan die lig gekom dat verskeie onderwysers wat tydelik deur die departement aangestel is se kontrakte nie hernu sal word nie.

Die regering het ook begroot vir 200 ad hoc poste, maar het intussen aangekondig dat die poste opgeskort is. Poste sal voortaan deur beheerligame gevul moet word.

Visagie meen dat die departement al etlike miljoene aan skole skuld.

“Hierdie geld sal van êrens af moet kom, die minister sal moet ingryp anders gaan onderwys in hierdie provinsie werklik erg daaronder lei.”

Members of Destiny Alive Family Church, a congregation in Mokopane, is building just such a centre from where they wish to serve the town, the province and the continent. It is not one of those ‘by Christians for Christians’ projects - its for everyone. “We are not building a congregation, we are building lives,” said

Destiny Alive shepherd, pastor Thomas Marshall at an introductory evening to the Mokopane RET (Resource Equipping and Training) Centre last week.

The centre is being developed on the corner of Geyser and Fourie Streets next to the Voortrekker hospital and will house Learning Land - the pre-primary school, Destiny Academy – which offers schooling from Grade R to Grade 12 and Compass Academy of Learning which offers a range of vocational courses ranging from tourism to engineering. A university is also planned for the premises.

The church engaged to buy the land from the Mogalakwena municipality in 2003 and was able to finalize formalities to occupy the land in 2009. It currently houses a boma, ablution and storage facilities and a big tent which doubles as a gathering place for the congregation and a gymnasium for the gymnastics club.

Once completed the RET Centre on this premises will be the nerve centre from where Destiny Alive’s outreach programmes will be launched and where people from all over will be equipped to go back to their communities and become the answer to the challenges in their society.

The college and schools are already operational at Destiny Alive’s campus in Schoeman Street, Mokopane and will move across as soon as they can be accommodated in the RET Centre.

“You are going to see great things happen in this place,” said Past. Marshall.

Making no apologies for RET Centre’s Christian roots, Past. Marshall makes it clear that the centre and its founders will take hands with anybody who wants to make a difference. “We are not against any school or college and we are not against any church or denomination.”

Destiny Alive spokesperson, Daleen Janse van Rensburg, explains that the purpose of the new RET Centre would be to empower all people, regardless of their religious views, for a better future through training them to break through the trappings of political struggle and corporate strife.

“We want to send people into the world with more than academic qualifications, they must also be free of historic baggage and intellectually, emotionally and spiritually equipped to effect positive change in our country and in the world.”

The people behind the dream are from left: Daleen Janse van Rensburg, Yda Hawkin, Elaine Janse van Rensburg, Fred van der Merwe, Rina and Hennie Venter, Tomas and Minda Marshall and Richard Marshall.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SA Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Simon Mpembe has issued a R500 000 reward to anybody who can provide information which will lead to the arrest and conviction of suspects who have been responsible for poaching or planning to poach rhinos in the province.

According to Mpembe 74 rhinos were poached for their horns in Limpopo

R500 000 reward for rhino poachersbetween January and December 2011. Since the beginning of the New Year at least ten rhinos were shot and killed and dehorned.

Almost 38 suspected poachers are behind bars and awaiting their trial dates, but Mpembe says a lot more can be done to make sure that the future of the rhinoceros in the province is ensured.

“We need the co-operation of each and every citizen of this province and country to bring the perpetrators to book and stop this slaughter from

Confusion over FET CollegeMedia reports this week on the minister of higher and basic education, Blade Nzimande’s announcement that he would place Lephalale and Letaba FET colleges under administration has created massive confusion in the provincial education department this week.

According to a report in Business Day last Friday, Nzimande made these remarks at a meeting of four select committees of the National Council of Provinces. Nzimande reportedly said that both colleges were “completely dysfunctional” and that both would be placed under administration.

Northern News spoke to CEO of the Lephalale campus, Annemie van Vuuren, who only read about the minister’s comments, but received no communication or visit from the department. Van Vuuren who is not permitted to speak to the media referred us to the MEC’s spokesperson, Pat Kgomo. Kgomo as well as the provincial co-coordinator for FET colleges, Isaac Nkuna would not comment, saying only that they have made enquiries as to why these comments were made, but got no answers.

Vuyelwa Qinga, media liaison for the national department of Higher Education and Training could not be reached for comment at the time of going to print.

The Lephalale Municipality and the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) launched a women’s caucus last week Thursday, selecting Lephalale municipal speaker, Rosinah Boloka as the chairperson, councilor Paulina Molekwa as deputy chairperson and DA councillor Astrid Bason as secretary.

SALGA programme manager, Mpho Selepe who explained the purpose of the women’s caucus spoke about the importance of women in society and the difference they could make in the communities they live in.

The objective of the caucus would be to have one voice as the women of Lephalale and give each other support, to monitor and evaluate the problems surrounding Lephalale, to instill confidence in each other and to promote gender equality.

Selepe urged the women councillors of Lephalale to come up with programmes that would help in reaching out to the community by allowing them platforms to voice their opinions, problems and solutions. “We as woman should also learn to share opportunities and not find that one woman has multiple jobs and other women have none” added Selepe.

“We are women, let us hold hands” said Lephalale Mayor Johanna Mojela in support of Selepe’s views. Speaker of the Lephalale municipality Rosinah Boloka gave her vote of confidence in DA councilor Astrid Basson, who was not present at the meeting. “We are voting her in because we have seen her capabilities and we hope to learn from her,” said Boloka.

“Ons vra elke jaar aan die Raad om meer mense aan te stel, maar die begroting laat dit nie toe nie. Paaie en parke is die twee afdelings in ‘n stadsraad waar die munisipaliteit nie geld genereer nie. Daarom is dit seker nie altyd die nommer een prioriteit wanneer daar geld begroot word nie.”

bankrot is asgevolg van uitstaande water-, elektrisiteit- en grondbelastingsgelde en die feit dat dit grootliks afhanklik is van gelde van provinsiale departmente, wat self onder finansiële druk verkeer, meen Roux dat die toestand van parke en pad reserwes nie gou gaan verbeter nie.

“Ons doen wat ons kan, maar sonder personeel en nuwe toerusting is dit baie moeilik.”

The Marula tree and fruit, known for its many uses, was celebrated on Saturday in Shongoane. Go loma Morula was hosted by the department of Sports, Arts and Culture, with the aim to raise awareness of this indigenous African tree.

MEC for sports, arts and culture, Joyce Mashaba urged communities to teach future generations about preserving their culture and traditions. “The spirit of Ubuntu should live on and entrepreneurs need to continue delving into ancient knowledge and use modern technology to create riches for our people,” she said.

The Marula tree is used for food, drink, medicine, dye for tanning leather and for cleansing rituals. The bark of the tree is eaten by elephants for its tannin and the tree is host to many insects like butterflies, bees and mosquito’s.

“The Marula tree has been our source of life since childhood. Celebrating this tree today gives me great pride and honour and I urge the future generations to take care of this fruit and the elders to teach the children about the uses of this tree and raise awareness that this is a sacred tree,” said Frank Tlou Mashiane (right)from the Moletjie series dance group who performed at the event.

South Africa’s eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites at Mapungubwe. Marie Hurter tells Northern News readers why they should take the time to visit this marvelous area sooner rather than later as it is at risk of losing its world heritage status.

About 60km north of Alldays, snug against Limpopo’s northern border, is Mapungubwe National Park, where the great Shashe- and Limpopo Rivers flow together to form the natural borders between South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe. The sight must be the collective vision of explorers through the ages – Africa’s vast open spaces stretching to the horizon as one stands on South African soil overlooking Zimbabwe to the Northeast and Botswana to the Northwest.

At this time of year, the Shashe River is dry, except for a few scattered water pools in the distance. Opportunistic crocodiles in the ever-flowing Limpopo swim lazily towards Botswana cattle grazing on the opposite bank. The only sounds are cicadas, kingfishers, hornbills, fish eagles and the rhythmic chime of cattle bells.

Except for rhinos, the park boasts the rest of the big five and a great diversity of fauna, flora and bird life.

Comfortable accommodation is available in Leokwe, the main camp, while Tshugulu Lodge is a small luxury camp. The park also has a wilderness camp, a camping site and a tented camp in the forest close to the Limpopo River, where most of the parks’ animals are concentrated.

Mapungubwe – the lost kingdom Festival of the first fruit

The tented camp is quite an extraordinary experience - built on wooden decks around massive Nyala trees. A cacophonous wake-up call before first light from a zillion birds and the Piet-my-vrou shouting as if perched on your pillow, is a shocker at first, but the closest to nature you’ll ever get. A ceiling fan and open tent flaps create a surprisingly cool and natural airflow through the tent, even at this hot time of year.

Mapungubwe was possibly the largest iron-age kingdom in the sub-continent around one thousand years ago. Apart from subsistence farming, the inhabitants made objects of iron, gold and copper and traded locally and abroad as far away as China, India, Egypt and Persia. The Mapungubwe Kingdom was abandoned in the 14th century, then forgotten for more than seven centuries before it was discovered again in the early 1930’s.

In 2011 the South African government gave the go-ahead to the Australian mining company, Coal of Africa Ltd, to start mining operations at Vele, a mere seven kilometers from Mapungubwe. Depending on the outcome of a monitoring mission report submitted by the World Heritage Centre and the International Council of Monuments and Sites, Mapungubwe may be at risk of losing its listing as a World Heritage Site when the Heritage Committee meets again in June 2012.

Die beloning wat die polisie nou aanbied is dus nader aan die bedrag wat die middelman tussen die stropers en die oorsese koper of uitvoerder kry.

Met so baie werklose mense in Suid-Afrika en veral in Limpopo, behoort die uitlewering van renosterstropers ‘n gemaklike manier te wees om eens en vir altyd uit die gat van armoede te kom.

Dit sal interessant wees om te sien hoeveel mense kom na vore met inligting, ek glo dit is soos Lt. Genl. Mpembe sê: hierdie stropers woon tussen ons en in baie gemeenskappe weet almal wie hulle is en wat hulle doen.

God Himself is love. God’s love is the laying down your life, washing of feet, life transforming, never wavering, filled with mercy, heart bursting kind of love. The Word of God teaches us that we were created in God’s image. If God is love, does that not mean that we are to become what He is....love?

Author and teacher Joyce Meyer writes in her book “The love revolution” -Will you continue to be a part of the problem or will you be a part of the answer? Make a decision to make love the central theme of your life. If there is anyone who understood God’s love it was the apostle John. He was known as the disciple whom Jesus loved and he often referred to himself in that manner.

He tells the story about a time when Jesus ate with His disciples. It was just before

the Passover Feast and the evening meal was being served. Jesus knew that the time had come for Him to leave this world and go to the Father. John writes: “Having loved his own who were in the world, He now showed them the full extent of His love.”

What was the full extent of His love? That God who created them stood up and washed His disciple’s feet. Jesus tells them: “Do you understand what I have done for you? You call me Teacher and Lord and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I your Lord and Teacher have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.”

Well known author John Maxwell writes “We should always keep in mind that God loves everybody and we need to treat others the way Jesus would treat them. We need to encourage them to be who God created them to be.”

God’s love is unfailing (ps 33:5), it is ever before us (ps 23:3) it is wondrous and higher than the heavens. (ps17:7).

Compliments to the SPCALEPHALALE - I would like to compliment the Lephalale SPCA for the diligent work that they do. In December I visited the SPCA and I was very impressed with how clean the kennels were. The grounds were neat with no rubbish lying around. There was no unpleasant odours of dirty kennels and dirty animals. The animals were clean, happy and in good condition.

André van der Linde, the manager of the SPCA was very friendly and took the time to show us the property.

Through his actions and those of his staff, you could tell that he was proud of what he did and what they are there to achieve, which is the welfare of that animals. He goes out of his way to make the animals as comfortable as possible and they richly deserve praise and appreciation for the difficult job done very well. - Kim White

Die fees skop af op 9 Augustus 2012 en is ten bate van die Potgietersrus Dienssentrum vir Bejaardes en Hoërskool Piet Potgieter se skoolterrein is waar al die bedrywinghede gaan plaasvind.

Feesgangers gaan vanjaar vir die eerste keer hekgelde betaal om toegang te verkry tot die Kierieklapper Kunstefees. Dit beteken dat alle produksies en optredes tydens die dag vir u toeganklik is, dat u nie nog ekstra kaartjies moet koop vir optredes nie. U betaal dus een keer en verkry toegang tot kuns, kleurvolle produksies en talle stalletjies.

Kunstenaars wat kleur aan die fees gaan gee is onder andere, Elize Cawood, die nuwe sanggroep Adam, Jakkie Louw en Kevin Leo, Heinz Winckler en Karlien van Jaarsveld - om net ‘n paar te noem.

Die Kierieklapper Golfdag gaan steeds voort soos vorige jare, maar die pretstap gaan vervang word met ‘n 3-kamp of fietsrit.

‘n “Gospel” fees word vir Sondag, 12 Augustus beplan met onder andere “Onbeskaamd” en ‘n geestelike kinderproduksie Rooikappie en Wolf. Optredes deur verskeie plaaslike kore sal ook deel uitmaak van die Gospel fees.

Die gemeenskap word aangemoedig om hierdie jaar alle vriende vanoor die hele Suid-Afrika te nooi om ‘n heerlike Bosveld-langnaweek te kom beleef, en terselftertyd te deel in al die bedrywighede gedurende vanjaar se Kierieklapper Kunstefees.

Nadat hy die Limpopo Closed met tellings van 74 en 70 gewen het, is hy gekies vir die Driehoekige Limpopo Amateurspan wat Limpopo eersdaags op Witrivier sal verteenwoordig. Vir ‘n junior is dit ‘n fantastiee prestasie, veral as ‘n mens in ag neem dat hy minder as ‘n jaar gelede nog met ‘n 16 voorgee gespeel het.
