Fringes are fantastic! They add instant heat

FRINGE FACTSDid you know? Fringes originated from the Native American tribes who created garments with fringes to repel rainwater from soaking them as they rode across the prairies. Then in 1920 the Flapper Era made fringes an fashion icon with those famous fringed dance dresses. Finally the hippie era snapped up this fabulous fringe craze and made it their own. Now you can have fun with fringes!

The latest look for spring is inspired by those magnificent mega music festivals that shook the

Seventies, so get out there and rock some fringes. Check out living life on the fringe in everything from swishy kimono jackets dripping in flighty fringes to high-flying fringed bags and fabulous fringed boots

procedure that takes about 30 minutes. All needles are new, sterile, used only once and incinerated after use.But many people are still uncertain as to exactly what happens when you donate blood. This is how the actual donation process works:• You will complete a donor questionnaire that includes your personal details;• You will answer questions regarding your health and social behavior;• You will undergo a one-on-one interview with a staff member following the questions you answered on the donor questionnaire;• Your iron (hemoglobin) level will be checked and your blood pressure and pulse rate will be taken;• During the donation process you will donate one unit of blood (480ml), which your body will quickly replace; and• You will receive refreshments to aid in replacing lost fluid.• After donating, eat well and increase

your fluid intake for the next four to six hours. Do not smoke for at least 30 minutes. Also avoid strenuous physical exertion and lifting heavy objects with the arm used for making the donation for at least two hours afterwards.

WHERE YOU CAN DONATE BLOOD You’ve decided you want to donate blood, but you don’t know where to go. The South African National Blood Service can be contacted at www.sanbs.org.za or by phoning the toll free number 0800 11 9031 for a list of locations in your area.

TOP 10 BLOOD FACTS You hardly ever see your blood, yet it is the very thing that keeps you going. Here are some interesting facts on blood:The average adult man has about five to six litres of blood in his body, while the average woman has about four.Your blood makes up about 7% of your total body weight.About 95% of the body’s blood cells are made in bone marrow.

There are approximately 1 billion red blood cells in two to three drops of blood. There are three types of blood cells: Red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, all of which float around in plasma. The blood that you donate can be separated into these constituent parts.Your body usually replaces the volume of the blood you donate within 24 hours. Restoring red blood cell levels to normal can take up to two months though.Whole blood has a shelf-life of 35 days. Red blood cells last 42 days, platelets only five days and plasma up to one year. The most common blood type is O positive, while AB negative is the rarest. People with AB blood can receive any kind of blood from a donor, while O negative blood can be given to anyone.Scientists recently managed to change type A and B blood into type O. If this process can one day be done on a large scale, it would go a long way to alleviating the persistent shortage of blood. If you are healthy, you will be eligible to donate blood up to 330 times in your life.

Blood donationSafe blood saves lives. Every day

thousands of people would die if others did not donate their blood.

By donating blood, you are giving a patient something money cannot buy.

A single blood donation can equal three gifts of life, as nearly every blood donation is separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets.

The majority of transfusions are given to: Women who hemorrhage as a complication of pregnancy;Children with severe anemia; Accident victims; and surgical and cancer patients.By donating blood you make a difference.

WHY IS THERE SUCH A DEMAND FOR DONOR BLOOD? The huge number of traffic accidents over the holidays creates a high demand for donor blood. Right? Wrong. the interesting thing is that traffic accidents have little impact on the demand for donor blood. While there is only a slight increase in demand for donor blood over holidays, there is also a corresponding decrease in elective surgery during these times. So the demand for donated blood remains pretty steady all-year round. Blood usage in South Africa is more or less at a plateau, but slight increases are visible as the population increases.

WHO CAN DONATE BLOOD?Anyone who is over 17, weighs at least 50 kilograms and who has not donated blood in the preceding 56 days, who is healthy, not anemic, not on certain types of medication, or whose social behavior does not place them at an increased risk of transmitting the HI-virus or a hepatitis virus. People who have recently travelled to malaria areas are usually also excluded.

THE DONATION PROCESS Donating blood is a safe and simple

FAIRMONT’S LEAGUE OF LEGENDS TEAMFairmont finished 2nd in the League of Legends section and the team also qualified for national team trials later this year. If they are successful, they have the chance to go on an all-expenses paid trip to the World Championships in South Korea. Fairmont’s League of Legends team from 2014 also received National Colours and will play an online test match against Austria later this year. The team who received their National colours was Seung Ju Lee, Seug Ju Min, Mingu Kang, Nicholas Mortlock and Eric Larsen. From left to right: Nicholas Mortlock and Daniel TangAbsent from photo: Mingu Kang and Jayden Gillman

DOTA TEAM After a very tense tournament, Fairmont’s 2nd Dota team went on to beat the 1st Dota team with 5 seconds to spare in the match. In doing so, they finished 3rd overall against very strong competition. They received their provincial colours and they qualify for National team trials later this year. The 2nd Dota Team also finished 3rd overall nationally, and are currently ranked 3rd in South Africa. The team members included Ehber Burger, Nicolas De Lange, James Vermeulen, Philip Harrison and Daniel Middleton.

FIFA 15 COMPETITION Andrew Reeve won the Fifa 15 competition on Xbox and was crowned the Western Province champ overall against some very tough competition. Andrew, who is currently a Grade 9 learner, played against players above 20 years of age, so this is a wonderful achievement for him and best wishes accompany him to the national team trials later this year. Fairmont introduced e-Sports at the beginning of last year and the school is very proud of the fast growing pace at which learners are joining and their achievements.

CELEBRATE THE MAGICLaerskool Welgemoed het vanaf 7 tot 11 September hul Revue(Celebrate the Magic) vir hul 50 jarige feesvieringe gehou. Every learner from grade 1 to grade 7 participated in this memorable experience. We will remember this production for a very long time.

TYGERBERG EISTEDDFOD Congratulations to our Grade 3 speech choir who achieved 92% (Highest Honours) at the Tygerberg Eisteddfod

LAERSKOOL BRACKENFELL KAMERKOOR, LEWENDIG, OP TV. / BRACKENFELL PRIMARY CHAMBER CHOIR, LIVE, ON TV.Die koorleiers, Mev. My school Sing With Us’ (Pharrel Williams-kompetisie) ingeskryf. We heard about the competition in May. Pharrel Williams, international pop icon, will be visiting SA soon during his tour. He is looking for a singing group who will be chosen and then given the opportunity to perform with him during one of this concerts. On the 20th of July, the SABC 3 live morning show, Expresso, contacted the school and asked if the choir could perform the next day on live television to promote the competition even further. We decided to grab the golden opportunity and with the support of Mr. Groenewald,

parents and staff, the choir members got up at 03:00 the next morning and arrived at school at 03:45, so that we could be in Sea Point at the studio, bright and early. They sang like nightingales and we are very proud of these children who represented and upheld Brackenfell Primary’s name in such a public manner.

SPELLING MARATHONA fundraiser like the spelling marathon serves more than one purpose. Besides the fact that we raised an astronomical amount of almost R90 000, our learners are also more encouraged to study their spelling words.

SKOOLHOOF VERJAAR EN SPEEL IN ‘N RUGBYWEDSTRYDMnr.

Hier is vlnr. mnr. Viviers (skeidsregter), mnr. Mostert (lofsanger) en die skoolhoof mnr. Nel (“ou manne” rugbyster).

Hier wens mnr.

produksie, Laerskool Mikro wens julle geluk.

STELLENBERG CLAIMS WP SEVENS TROPHY32 Teams competed in the WP Sevens Championships at Florida Park on Friday 11 September. In group 1 the defending champions Paarl Gimnasium and Stellenberg both scored comfortable first round wins, to pit them against one another in Round 2. Stellenberg started like a house on fire, showing scant regard for the reputation of the defending champions and national powerhouse in the 15 man game. They raced to a 19-0 lead, with tries from Evert Carstens, speedster Lance Jurgens and live wire Ricardo Duarttee. Gim, again missing their SA Schools player Johan Visser (he also missed inter-schools, this time away at the Commonwealth Games), regained their composure after half time and with 2 tries it was game on at 19-14. Stellenberg, determined not to let their early advantage slip away, added another try by Handre van Zyl. Gim scored on the final whistle, Stellenberg managing an upset win of 24-21. Excelsior Secondary, another well known exponent of the sevens game, were

elimated in round 2, leaving Milnerton High and Macassar High as the other strong contenders in group 1. In group 2, Tygerberg High were playing a beautiful brand of sevens rugby, under the tutelage of sevens supremo Gavin Beresford. Their structure, beautiful

running lines and crisp handling saw them ease into the semi finals. There they were to meet the winners of the quarter final between Bellville South and Kasselsvlei. Both teams featured an abundance of pace and stepping ability, that got the excitement going in the stands. Bellville South beat Tygerberg a week earlier at the Tygerburger Sevens Tournament, with Kasselsvlei the

plate winners from that tournament. This time Kasselsvlei managed to get one over their neighbours in a spectacular encounter, which saw several end to end tries leaving both teams exhausted at the final whistle of the last and most exciting quarter final. The power and hard running of Tygerberg were just too much for Kasselsvlei in the semi-final. Tygerberg were in great form to score a fifty point win, looking strong to be crowned sevens champions of Western Province once again. Stellenberg eased through to the final. With their coaching team of Bobby Joubert and Coenraad de Villiers sporting strong sevens pedigrees, the table was set for an exciting final. Two first half tries by captain and player of the tournament Matthew Boshoff gave the Stellies a slender 12-7 lead. Tygerberg improved their accuracy after the break, and were leading 19-12. With less than a minute to go, and Tygerberg on the attack, the result seemed to go their way. Stellenberg however managed a turnover in their own

22, and after great interplay by Ricardo Duarttee and Evert Carstens, the exciting 16 year old Jacques van Biljon scored in the corner. Tygerberg were hanging on to a 19-17 lead. With seconds remaining, Evert and Schalk Carstens combined to regain possession from the kick-off, with Doohan Hanekom racing away to break the Tiere hearts. Both teams gave their everything, and the great spirit afterwards between the neighbouring schools showed the respect they have for one another. Many of the players represented their school for the last time on a rugby field, but the friendships they built will last forever.
