Whether you’re doing it on your stoep in Strandfontein, on your patio in Pretoria or at your mother’s cousin’s uncle’s house in Kraaifontein, there’s nothing better than the smell of a chop sizzling on the coals.

And, as a bonus, we all get the day off, as our government has decided to set 24 September aside for all South Africans to celebrate our rich heritage.

While browsing the internet, I came across braai.com,

whose mission is to position National Braai Day as South Africa’s annual day of celebration on National Heritage Day. These guys have very helpfully shared a list of braai words – a braai dictionary –to help you sound cool around the fire:

• aai: A braai in the summer, as in a braai without the brrr.• abbraaiviation: A very short braai.• abraaimowitz: A Jewish braai.• asskebab: Someone who makes a fool of him/herself at a braai.• aweh: A word used to express

a positive attitude – “hello”, “yes”, “good”.• baas: Afrikaans for boss, or the guy holding the braai tongs.• bak: A dish made from aluminium or stainless steel, used to store meat before and after it is braaied. Some braaiers use a glass bak, but there is a safety concern with this. If you’re eating straight off the braai, a bak is unnecessary.• barbie: Australian slang for barbeque. This is what you will learn to call a braai if you emigrate.• blackwattle: Alien vegetation that uses a lot of water. This means that it’s good for the environment to chop it down and braai with it. WHAT YOU NEED:• 3 grapefruits• 2 tbls brown sugar (approx)

WHAT TO DO:• Set the oven to grill and

place a rack in the middle shelf.

• Cut grapefruits evenly in half, slice 2-3mm off each base to allow grapefruits to rest flat without rolling.

• If using a grapefruit knife, carefully cut along the rim of the flesh before cutting into 4 or 8 segments.

• Place grapefruits on a baking sheets, flesh side up,and sprinkle each half with approximately 1 tsp of brown sugar to taste.

• Grill for about 10-15 minutes until flecked and speckled.Serve plain or with yoghurt.

My seun, Kurtley Gordon, is ‘n graad 1-leerder in Juffrou Pentz se klas by Laerskool Aristea.

Verlede week het Kurtley met ‘n R5 gespeel, toe dit per abuis in sy keel afglip en vassit. Juffrou Penz het hom te hulp gesnel en probeer om dit uit te kry – sonder sukses. Daar was nie genoeg tyd om hulp te soek nie en sy het moedig bly sukkel – met een doel voor oë – om Kurtley se lewe te red. Na vele probeer-slae het sy dit uiteindelik uitgekry – juffrou en leerder ewe verlig.

Ek het die Here nog nie ophou dank vir die wysheid wat Hy daardie dag vir Juffrou Pentz gegee het sodat ek vandag my kind lewend by my kan hê nie! Hy was daardie dag by hulle teenwoordig en kon haar aanmoedig om nie moed op te gee nie.

Dankie Juffrou Pentz – dat jy deur die Here se genade – my kind kon red. Jy is nie verniet gekies om op Kurtley se pad te kom nie. Ek sal altyd dankbaar bly.

Watter waarde heg jy aan jou kinders, of self kinders oor die algemeen?

Dit is hartseer om te sien watter waarde daar deesdae aan kinders geheg word. Ouers gebruik kinders as wapens en instrumente om wraak te neem tydens egskeidings. In ons land het amper 11000 onderwysers hulle werk verloor, omdat daar nie begroot is vir onderrig van kinders nie. Die teenoorgestelde vind ons in Singapoer. Onderwys is een van die hoogs betaalde beroepe daar, want hulle heg waarde aan kinders. Hulle besef dat die onderwyser wat die klein graad eentjie leer om wiskunde te doen, moontlik in die toekoms nog ‘n Chris Barnard gaan wees, wat nuwe orgaan oorplantings moontlik kan maak. Daardie onderwysers besef dat die engelse gediggies wat hulle in taal klasse leer, die nuwe Shakespeare kan voortbring.

Ons sê so maklik “Die jeug is die toekoms”, maar ons woorde en dade wys nie dat ons in hulle belê vir die toekoms nie. Ons vergeet dat kinders vandag in ons midde - en deel van die samelewing is, en om vandag waarde tot hulle toe te voeg is soos om ‘n

groot deposito neer te sit vir die toekoms.

Daar is ‘n grap wat vertel dat ons vandat ‘n kind gebore is, hulle leer om te loop en sodra hulle goed kan loop, dan leer ons hulle praat. Net sodra hulle beide bemeester het, dan sê ons vir hulle: “By stil en gaan sit.”

Hanteer jy jou kinders en ander kinders op hierdie wyse, of betrek jy hulle in dit wat jy leer en wat jy doen?

Jy kan vandag ‘n verskil maak en vir jou kind en ander kinders wys dat hulle waardevol is, deur Benjamin Franklin se eenvoudige raad te volg: “Vertel my en ek sal vergeet, leer my en ek mag dalk onthou, betrek my en ek sal leer.” Mag jy kinders betrek in wat jy doen en dink en so vir hulle wys dat hulle is waardevol.

YOU WILL NEED:• Ceramic or porcelain crockery• Stamp• Ink and pad• CPG (Ceramic, Porcelain, Glass) Podge

The crockery used in this DIY was bought on sale for next to nothing and combined with a favourite crown stamp, they are going to revolutionize our dinner parties!

1. Simply dab your stamp on the ink pad and test on paper to see if you need to dab more or less ink on it to get the desired effect.

2. Place the stamp in the section you want to stamp and try not to move it around while applying pressure on it.

For a lovely and very easy DIY, why not personalize your crockery with a stamp or monogram?

On glazed surfaces this is tricky but if you’re gentle you will get it done without difficulty. Don’t stress if you have a bit missing on a little section or get it smudged – the overall look will be slightly distressed and simply adds to the charm of the piece.

3. After it has dried properly you can glaze it with a couple of layers podge, making sure it dries thoroughly between layers. Bake your bowl, plate or mug for 60 minutes on 90 degrees Celsius with the door of the oven slightly open. Different makes of glaze

have different baking requirements so be sure to read the instruction carefully.

Toer na HartenbosLaerskool Aristea se O/13 Tennis-, Skaak-, Netbal-, en Rugby- spanne het die voorreg gehad om op 15 Augustus 2014, om 05H30 met groot opgewondenheid te vertrek na Hartenbos vir ‘n naweek van sport! Die Tennis het reeds 12H00 afgeskop met hulle wedstryde waarna die skaak 14H00 deelgeneem het. Rugby en Netbal het die Saterdag geleentheid gekry en teen verskeie skole deelgeneem. Ons het tuis gegaan by die “Riverside Holiday Resort”, waar die kinders hulle self deur verskeie aktiwiteite kon vermaak. Vrydagaand het ons heerlik in Hartenbos Spur gekuier, en Saterdagaand die braaivleis vuur die werk laat doen. Sondagoggend het ons die pad terug huistoe begin met ‘n Wimpy ontbyt. Die leerders se gedrag was oor die algemeen goed, en ons is trots op al ons spanne wat deelgeneem het, maar in besonder ons skaak span wat al hulle wedstryde gewen het. Dankie aan al ons personeel wat die kinders vergesel het, sonder julle opoffering was dit nie moontlik om die leerders die geleentheid te bied.

ChessWe are very proud to say that August has been a very good month for Aristea Chess. Not only have the girls team participated at three different events, but our under 13 team has been doing very well as well! They have completed 3 matches, and have not lost a match thus far. They played against Durbanville and won 4 – 2. They played on the Hartenbos Tour, against Hartenbos Primary and won the 24 – 0! Three rounds, 8 players, we did not lose a match! Then this past Friday, we played against Gene Louw and won the match 4 – 2! The girls’ team played in the District North and WP Top Schools tournament. They also played in the Marie Delport Woman’s Day tournament in Worcester. There one of our learners, Kiara Blows, (on the

photo), won the under 10 section! We invite everyone and anyone (Primary school learners only!) to play in our locally organised friendly tournament on Saturday, 20 September 2014. Tygerberg VolkspeleHierdie Graad 7 Aristea leerder het waarlik ‘n passie vir goeie kultuur deelname aan Volkspele en is ‘n baie aktiewe lid van die Tygerberg Volkspelelaer. Hy neem binnekort deel aan ‘n Weskustoer, ten spyte van deelnames op Worcester, Ceres, Tulbach, Riebeek-Kasteel en Malmesbury. Gedurende die maand Oktober sal Albertus deelneem aan die Volkspele-Eeufees te Bloemfontein. Ons beste wense vergesel hom.

Laerskool Bellville Noord

VejaarsdagLaerskool Bellville-Noord se skoolhoof het vandag (3/9) sy 62ste verjaarsdag (waarvan hierdie sy 21ste by die skool self is) gevier. Nog elke jaar word daar deur die personeel en leerderraad op ‘n tema besluit, en val hy daarby in en dra wat ookal vir hom gebring word. Die kinders geniet dit elke jaar om te sien waarin hy gaan verskyn. Vanjaar was die tema Blou en het hy ‘n smurfpak gedra. Die leerders was almal in blou gekleed en daar was van Bloubulhemde, blou feëtjievlerke, blou dasse, blou haasore,

blou veiligheidshelms, blou sokkies en nog vele meer blou kledingstukke te sien; Nadat hy verskyn en vir hom gesing is, was daar ‘n video gewys waarin verskeie leerders vanaf graad R tot graad 7, en selfs die snoepiepersoneel, die kans gekry het om hom geluk te wens. Die hele saal het hierdie video geweldig geniet. Na die video het meneer Nel die kans gekry om die leerders toe te spreek en het hy genoem watter groot voorreg dit vir hom is om hoof van hierdie skool te wees. Mnr. Nel saam met van die leerders.

SA Kampioenskappe vir karate Een van ons graad 4-leerders, Aldo Nel, het die afgelope naweek op 23 Augustus ‘n brons medalje verwerf by die SA Kampioenskappe vir karate te Johannesburg. Hy het geveg in die onder 30 kg afdeling. Hy was in 2013 die eerste jaar wat hy karate begin doen het, reeds gekies om deel te neem aan die Suid-Afrikaanse kampioenskappe verlede jaar in Durban en het daar sy eerste brons medalje verower – 3de plek in sy gewiggroep. Hy het ook verlede jaar die wisseltrofee vir beste presteerder in die Wes Kaap behaal.

BN Landsdieners kamp by BridgetownOns Landsdienslede het die afgelope maand weer lekker gekamp. Hierdie keer het ons graad 4 tot 7’s gekamp by Bridgetown. Hul is deur twee onderwysstudente, mnre. Stefan Louw en Wardo Kriel, vergesel wat die vorige paar weke vir hul praktiese opleiding by Bellville-Noord was. Die kamp is deur die lewendige groep jong-werkende en studente lede van die Wes-Kaap Landsdiensbeweging aangebied en was vol energie en het allerhande nuwe aktiwiteite ingesluit. Van skuilings bou met riete, visvang in die rivier tot hul eie lanterns maak was deel hiervan.

BN leerders vaar goed in gimnastiek en tuimelJohnny Drake (gr. 3) en Nikita Chambers (gr. 6) is gekies vir die Kaapstad Distrikspan (voorheen WP) om op 28-30 Augustus deel te neem aan die Suid-Sone interprovinsiale kompetisie vir Trampolien en Artisties in Kaapstad deel te neem. Hier is hul uitslae soos behaal by die Kaapstad Distrik proewe: Johnny: 3de (mini-trampoline), 3de (swart trampoline), 8ste (artisties), 3de (tuimel) Nikita: 1ste (dubbel mini-trampoline), 9de (artisties), 3de (tuimel). Nikita het verder die Distrikspan vir Tuimel gehaal wat op 5-6 Sept aan die Interprovinsiale kompetisie vir Tuimel sal deelneem. Hier sal sy poog om die span te haal wat in die Oktober skoolvakansie aan die SA Nasionale kampioenskappe sal deelneem. (Inligting verskaf deur Spectrum Gimnastiek Tuimel en Trampolien Klub.)

WP SkyfskietCorné Schreuder is op 15 en 16 Augustus 2014 as lid van die WKSSV (Wes-Kaap Skole Skieters Vereeniging) -span gekies. Sy is die eerste lid van die O/14 B -span wat aan vanjaar se SA`s, gedurende die Oktober vakansie, in Gauteng gaan deelneem. Corné het die afgelope Saterdag, 30 Augustus 2014, aan die Wes-Kaap Kampioenskappe deelgeneem en is verkies tot SAARA (South African Air Rifle Association) Wes-Kaap se O/14 A-span. Sy is ook gekies om vanjaar aan SAARA se SA`s deel te neem. Dit vind plaas direk na SANSSU s’n by dieselfde skietbaan in Gauteng (Florida Park).

Tygerberg KinderkoorGhia Hough, Catelyn Klose en Phebe La Grange (almal gr. 6) is gekies om by bogenoemde wêreldbekende koor in te skakel. Hartlik geluk met die groot eer wat hulle te beurt geval het!

Veearts besoek graad 1-leerdersVeearts Rozelle Theron het op 7 Augustus by die graad 1’s kom kuier. Ons het baie geleer van troeteldiere. Van ons maats het baie lekker pryse gewen.

Lesers hou Mikro se naam hoog!Die Kuilsrivier Openbare biblioteek het vanaf 1 Mei tot 31 Julie ‘n junior leesprogram aangebied. Laerskool leerders kon sterre verdien met elke vol leesblad wat ingehandig word. Hierdie sterre is bymekaar getel. Net tussen die twee seniors van Mikro, Deoni en Monique, is daar omtrent 150 boeke gelees.

Labbies under 7’s Sports day!On Saturday 6 September 2014, Labiance showed off our under 7 talent. The rugby boys and netball girls played their hearts out and had a great time doing so. The day was a huge success and we saw many future sport stars.

Every year Cartoon Network hosts an Art competition. This year, learners had to create a new alien character for the popular show Ben 10 Omniverse. The first prize is an iPad, a goodie bag AND your character is featured on Cartoon Network! Labiance Primary has entered a total of 55 learners. We wish them all good luck and hope to see one of our characters on the telly soon!

NetbalOns is hierdie jaar baie trots op ons 0/12 A netbal meisies. Hulle het deurgaans baie goed presteer hierdie seisoen. Hulle het selfs hul vakansie opgeoffer en deurlopend geoefen. Hulle het gekwalifiseer om Maandag 1 September 2014 te kon deelneem aan die WPPSN Semi-Finale by Lochnerhof in Somerset-Wes. Na afloop van ‘n suksesvolle oorwinning was daar nie ‘n groter beloning as ‘n heerlike roomys en kaalvoete in die seewater by Gordonsbaai nie! Baie geluk julle, julle hou Fanie Theron se naam hoog!

Language dayThese Grade 2 boys Shae Hankey( Italian ) and Ethan Beckett ( Mexican ) were really dressed for the occasion on our Language day. I wonder if they could say a word or two in their new language on that day?

Two De Kuilen’s in Tygerberg childrens’ ChoirA great honour has befallen two talented learners from De Kuilen Primary School. Their angelic singing secured a spot each for the girls in the world-renowned and prestigious Tygerberg Children’s Choir, currently in its 43 rd year. Gabrielle Meyer (12) and Skyler Carels (10) have been members of the school’s choir since Foundation phase. Hennie Loock ( director of this choir) visits schools and does auditions for members. The two girls singing talented bowled him over and he signed them up. “ On his last visit to the school during term 2 these two girls were the fortunate ones to make it.They will have the opportunity and privilege to join the choir for international choir competitions overseas. De Kuilen is proud of you and wish you many singing hours with the choir.

Just look at our girl Caitlynn Rhode (Grade 7). She really must have enjoyed her day. I wonder which country did she represented Spain, Mexico? You take a guess!

Braille-leesLeerders van die Athlone Skool van Blindes in Bellville-Suid het aan ons leerders kom voorlees uit hulle Braille boeke. Dit was baie interessant.

Op 29 Augustus 2014 was dit Laerskool Brackenfell se jaarlikse kermis! Die stormreën en koue weer kon glad nie die Brackies keer nie! Dit was ‘n fantastiese dag, gevul met hope pret, smaaklike kos, opwindende vermaak en ‘n verkeidenheid van ritte. Funland and Funtasia entertained the children with a wide variety of exciting rides. Every step of the field was filled with enthusiasm and laughter! All around were children standing in lines, eager to go on the rides. Om 12:00 was dit tyd vir die tradisionele kiskarresies wat hierdie jaar moontlik gemaak was deur die hoofborg van PRA-Risk Advisors. Almal is terug na die klasse om 11:30 vir hul voorbereiding vir die tawwe stryd wat voorgelê het. Dit

was toe ook geleentheid vir Mnr. Groenewald om vinnig die baan te toets. Die graad sewe seuns het behoorlik daardie karretjie laat brul om die baan in, rekord tyd! Met die afskop het die spanne behoorlik in mekaar se nekke geblaas. Goeie sportmangees het in al die wedrenne geheers. Baie dankie aan al ons borge wat dit vir elke klas moontlik gemaak het om pragtig te lyk met hul hempies, baniere ens. Baie dankie ook aan elke borg, onderwyser, beampte en leerder wat gehelp het om hierdie geleentheid suksesvol te laat plaasvind. Om 16:30 was dit die begin van die aandkermis. Mnr. en Mej. Kermis was een van die hoogtepunte van die aand.

Die beoordeelaars het ‘n Mej. Wes–Kaap eerste prinses, Mej. Junior SuidAfrika, Mev. Wes–Kaap 2014, finalis Mnr. Suid–Afrika en ook Miss Teen Kaapstad en Mzantsi ingesluit. Al die deelnemers het hulself puik van hul taak gekwyt en die kroning was ‘n hartroerende oomblik vir kinders, ouers en onderwysers. The Brackies were very privileged to end the fête off on a high note. A live band, Cherry Vynil, entertained the crowd with an excellent combination of songs. After a magnificent day filled with loads of fun, entertainment and hard work it was time for the teachers, parents and children to go home. Brackies hope to have another splendid fête in 2015!

SAPS Youth Desk Launch – A Brilliant Initiative MR AND MISS BTHS 2014On 27 August 2014 Bellville Police Service launched their 1st Youth Desk Initiative to the high schools in their area i.e. Bellville Technical High, Bellville High, Westcliff High, Settlers High and DF Malan High.

On Saturday, 30 August, the BTHS U16 Sevens team surprised many of the Western Cape with silky smooth handling, speed and nifty footwork to win their Pool during the Brackenfell High U16 Sevens Tournament. Their pool matches were played against Excelsior who won in 2013, and beat them 19-5. BTHS stepped up to what was to be their toughest pool match against Paul Roos and beat them 26-14 in that encounter.

This really boosted the boys, and caused them to simply overpower JG Meiring by beating them 24-0. BTHS played the Western Cape Sport School in the quarter finals, where they lost 5-19 against a classy Sport school team who narrowly lost in the Final of the tournament. We are very pleased with the progress of this group of boys, and look forward to watching them do damage in the 2015 season.

Brigadier Govender, Colonels Nel & Smit and Capt Nimb introduced the intended partnership between schools, community and the police. The aspects highlighted were: visible policing, crime detection and taking ownership of our communities. Learners, being future leaders in our communities, need to be educated in this rather important area.

Hattie Cricketers CappedWe wish to congratulate our Hattie cricketers who achieved District North colours on Wednesday , 27 August, at DF Malan High. These learners are: Tim Ockhuis, Shane Hull, Keenan Cupido & Lance Johnson (All U19 Kings) and Caleb Adams (U15 Knights). These boys will be participating in a series of scheduled matches by District North, where they will be playing against the WP Schools teams, as well as international touring sides. We wish them well during the 2014/15 cricket season, and hope to see many more achievements from these Hatties.

RugbyDie o.16A-rugbyspan van die Hoërskool Brackenfell het vanjaar ‘n goue seisoen beleef waarin hulle geen liga-wedstryd verloor het nie en dus die 2014-rugbyseisoen onoorwonne afsluit.

WindbuksSamantha Alexander, Adriaan de Beer en Jan Mostert het SAARA (South African Air Rifle Association) Wes-Kaapkleure vir 2014 verwerf en is toegelaat om deel te neem aan die 2014 SAARA SA Kampioenskappe. Adriaan het by die prysuitdeling die Trofee ontvang vir die SAARA 2014 Seuns Skut van die Jaar. Samantha het die Trofee ontvang as die SAARA 2014 Presisie Skut van die jaar. Ons is baie trots op hierdie drie leerders!

Baie geluk aan ons Boogskiet leerders!

Vrydagoggend, 29 Augustus ‘n yskoue en papnat ervaring gehad ten bate van die J9-stigting. HS Tygerberg het as deel van hul 60ste verjaarsdag vieringe ‘n donasie gemaak aan Joost van der Westhuizen se J9 stigting. Lede van die skool se eerste rugby- en hokkiespanne was gretig om ook hulle deel te doen vir ‘n goeie saak. HS Tygerberg het HS DF Malan, HS Brackenfell en HS Bellville uitgedaag om deel te neem aan die Ice Bucket Challenge. ‘n Video van hierdie uitdaging is op die skool se Facebook bladsy en YouTube beskikbaar. Ons wag egter nog vir reaksie op ons uitdaging.

Seweman-rugbytoernooi Die Tiere wen hul derde Villagers sewes toernooi in ‘n ry en het met die volgende spanne afgereken: Kwarteindronde: Wen Paul Roos met 17 - 14; Halfeindronde: wen Paarl Gim met 24 - 22; Finaal: wen Bishops 26 - 24.

Mev Wilma Rossouw, adjunk-hoof, doen ook haar deel vir hierdie belangrike saak en die skool se 60ste verjaarsdag, sy keer ‘n groot emmer vol yswater op mnr Wikus Herselman se kop om.

Tamsyn Swart, kaptein van die dogters eerste hokkiespan, geniet dit duidelik om ‘n bydra te lewer aan ‘n goeie saak.
