SUMMER 2011NRC today

Northfi eld Retirement Community • 507-664-3466 • 900 Cannon Valley Drive • www.northfi eldretirement.org

VOL. 3, NO. 3

From left: NRC Pastor Kristine Braaten-Lee with her parents, residents Pastor Arndt and Hazel Braaten. Braaten-Lee and NRC’s 19 area church partners help ensure that residents’ spiritual needs are met.

Bethel Lutheran Church, Northfi eld

A Winning team for older Adults—Area Churches and NRCNorthfi eld Retirement Community and Northfi eld/Cannon Valley area churches have been linked since NRC’s earliest days—even before the community opened its doors in 1969. The partnership began in 1962 when an exploratory com-mittee was created. From the outset, NRC’s corporate church members have com-prised the board of directors and standing

committees and served as delegates to the organization’s annual meetings. In this way, representatives of area churches help direct NRC’s programs and services, assist in strategic planning eff orts, and uphold NRC’s mission and tradition of Christian service.

The original corporation that founded Lutheran Home of the Cannon Valley, which now does business as Northfi eld

Retirement Community, was estab-lished by eight church congrega-

tions—NRC’s original corporate churches—Bethel Lutheran,

St. John’s Lutheran, St. Peter’s Lutheran—all of

Northfi eld; Farming-ton Lutheran; Solor

Lutheran, Web-ster; Trondhjem

Lutheran, Lonsdale; Christiania Lutheran, Lakeville; and Immanuel Lutheran in rural Northfi eld.* In 1971, Dennison Lutheran and Highview Christiania Lutheran in Farm-ington joined the corporate church ranks.

NRC’s ecumenical spirit was born long ago when in 1972 our corporate church membership increased and brought into our organization the following Northfi eld churches—Church of St. Dominic, First United Church of Christ and Trinity Luther-an. In 1974, Northfi eld United Methodist became a member of the corporate church group. Ten years later, Emmaus Baptist, All Saints Episcopal and the Assembly of God‡, all of Northfi eld, became corporate churches along with St. John’s Lutheran in Webster and the Yoked Parish (Main Street Moravian, Little Prairie United Methodist and Castle Rock United Methodist). page 2 NRC Today

rently the corporate church group includes the above mentioned churches with Main Street Moravian and Little Prairie United Methodist as separate congregations; plus St. Mark’s Lutheran in Randolph.

Over the past two years, NRC has entered into the renewal of covenants with corpo-rate churches. A large number of churches have completed the process of renewal, having signed a covenant that is individu-alized, listing specific ways the church will minister to seniors at NRC and ways NRC can serve older adults at the church. Other corporate churches are currently in the process of reviewing their outreach plans and refining their covenants.

Each covenant states that the church and NRC enter into a covenant relationship with the understanding that the entities will work together to grow and enhance their ministries to older adults in the congregations and at NRC. The covenant emphasizes that it does not create formal, legal obligations, but rather is meant to reaffirm mutual Christian commitment and understanding about mutual mission to older persons.

Opportunities abound within the covenant relationship making it a win-win situation for churches and NRC. NRC may assist with employment opportunities, care and living services, outreach opportunities and advocacy for older adults; provide experts on aging to serve as speakers at church forums and space at NRC for meetings and classes; and serve as consultants in a variety of health care/senior care areas, etc. In turn, the congregations offer direction on NRC boards and committees, take part in volunteerism and mission outreach, pro-vide financial support, and offer a variety of services within a senior ministry program.

In recent years, many retirement com-munities that were originally affiliated with church entities have divested themselves of their church connections. Northfield Retirement Community has chosen to retain the corporate church structure, join-ing together with these churches to most effectively serve the needs of older adults and truly become a part of the Northfield/Cannon Valley community.

“Nursing Home” Becomes “Care Center”Nursing homes have changed a good deal over the past decade. The phrases “long-term care” and “nursing home” typically bring to mind visions of unwelcoming, regimented institutions with white tile floors and lime green lounge chairs. At Northfield Retirement Community’s Care Center, both our facilities and our approach are quite the opposite. We focus on rehab and recovery to meet the needs of a diverse population, which includes both young and elderly residents.

Today, new admissions generally fall into two categories: residents who only stay a few weeks for rehab before being discharged back home, or residents who don’t require expensive inpatient hospital services, but cannot be cared for at home through home health care, assisted living or other community services.

Over the past few years the Northfield Care Center has embarked on a culture-change journey to meet the changing demographics and needs of the residents.

The federal Nursing Home Reform Law of 1987 (OBRA 87) requires that each nursing home “care for its residents in such a man-ner and in such an environment as will promote maintenance or enhancement of the quality of life of each resident.” This requirement emphasizes dignity, choice and self-determination for residents. We made changes aimed at de-institutionaliz-ing the environment and transforming the nursing home from the traditional model to a more resident-centered model that achieves the objectives of the new law.

Summer 2011 page 3

Northfi eld Retirement Community held its second youth volunteer event on Saturday June 25, 2011.

In partnership with its Backyard Mission, “Christian Love in Action,” the goal of the event was to build strong bonds that will enrich the lives of both residents and vol-unteers. Community organizations, groups, youth and families were encour-aged to participate.

The youth volunteers had the op-portunity to choose from a number of projects, including planting annuals in pots or planters, paint-ing plant markers, and playing Wii or board games with residents from across our campus. Two local groups, Northfi eld in Bloom and Northfi eld Garden Club, made it possible for the youth volunteers to do some plant propagation, which they were then able to take home. The event ended with a short closing program, when the youth

volunteers were presented certifi cates of appreciation and participated in a prize drawing.

NRC hopes to make this an annual tradi-tion for youth groups to foster an intergen-erational connection with residents, teach the value of volunteering and collaborate with diff erent community organizations.

Volunteer event Brings Youth and Residents together

Some characteristics of the culture change at the Northfi eld Care Center include:

• Care is truly resident-centered, tailored to meet the individual needs and preferences of each resident;

• Care is delivered by caregivers who have meaningful and valued roles in the residence;

• The environment is truly home-like, with residents having the privacy of their own rooms and bathrooms with the functions of the nursing home—

such as nurse stations, resident lounges and dining rooms—in close proximity to the residents’ rooms.

Residents truly participate in life at the Care Center, making decisions for themselves regarding dressing, dining, bathing and taking part in the functioning of the Care Center to the extent they wish to be involved.

Come visit us for a tour or volunteer some of your time to see the wonderful environ-ment our residents experience daily.

How Will Legislative Changes Affect You?

Fifth Annual NRC Golf Classic Raises $15,000

The 5th Annual NRC Golf Classic, held on June 6, was a resounding success, raising more than $15,000 for the NRC Foundation in support of special programs for the older adults NRC serves.

Kyle Nordine, president and CEO of Northfield Retirement Community, said, “On behalf of Northfield Retirement Com-munity, its board and staff, we thank the 5th Annual NRC Golf Classic Committee—Rick Moe, Jerry Kipp, Steve Meierbachtol, Mark Polzin, Tony Guth, Chris Sawyer, John Snodgrass, Tom Nielsen, Ingrid Anderson Sampo and Deborah Ward. Without them, this event would not have been possible. We are grateful for our major sponsors and hole sponsors who helped defray event expenses. And of course, special thanks to the golfers, prize donors, our board, volunteers and the Northfield Golf Club for contributing to the event’s success.”

Major sponsors included New Horizon Foods, Inc., and U.S. Food Services. The event was financially supplemented by matching funds from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

Proceeds to Benefit Programs for Older Adults

The team of Mike Flicek, Tom Guth, Tony Guth and John Callahan en-joyed a round of golf at Northfield Retirement Community’s 5th Annual Golf Classic held at the Northfield Golf Club.

The 2011 Minnesota State Legislature enacted a number of changes in aging services and housing arrangements that may affect you and your aging loved ones. While details are not yet clearly defined, the bottom line is that there will be cuts to ser-vices and new rules for accessing assisted living or housing with service arrangements.

Northfield Retirement Community, along with all other registered hous-ing providers, will see a 1.5 to 25 percent reduction in reimburse-ments for residents on assistance. This is being done to discourage residents from entering into contracts for services and

housing options prematurely. The state Department of Human Services believes that individuals are coming to senior retirement communities prior to the time they really need to be there and, conse-

quently, are spend-ing assets too quickly and moving on to state subsidies.

Additionally, all individuals who are moving to assisted living or apart-ments that have services available

must participate in an interview screening process in order to be eligible to come to the facility. This interview process will be handled by the local Area Agency on

Aging and can be done by telephone or in person. The purpose of this screening is to assure that aging individuals do not enter into a lease arrangement prior to knowing other options for care and housing in their communities.

The mandatory consultation requirement will begin October 1, 2011. If you or a loved one is concerned about avoiding this process, take the time now to seek out your local providers of services and sign agreements prior to October 1, 2011.

Northfield Retirement Community is here to help you and provide information for making good decisions about your aging future. If you have questions please call 507-664-3466.

Turns out that as I let go of old things, and made room for new things in my life, An amazing portal opened up for me! I am in the midst of moving to my new abode in Uptown! As my dear friend, Lori Williams of Northfield, said “Sherri, this place suits you! It’s your kind of energy, you will flourish here.”And she is right! I wish to thank Lori for not only helping me get a good start on the moving process, but acknowl-edge her doing so while in the midst of grieving the recent loss of her sweet mother, Barbara. What a fine and true friend. I feel very fortunate. My family, friends and business associates bless and brighten my days.

In the midst of summer life, I’ve managed to fit in some relaxing downtime at my brother’s cabin on weekends. And recently a family road trip to the buttes and rivers of western No. Dakota. I feel refreshed and invigorated! What better time to introduce a coupla new characters to Left Field!?

Shady Cat is, well, a little shady, kinda seedy former fat-cat, who thinks he’s a real swingin’ cat. Resting on the laurels of bygone days, ever searching for easy street. Trouble is, he wants the cream without working the crop. You know the type... an over-inflated sense of entitlement. Half ‘victim’ / half blowhard. Then there’s Paisley. Now she’s a real sweetheart. A cool kitty with a soft heart, seeking meaning in her 9 lives, and love... Half wisdom / half naive. Bringing a little feline hijinks, these two will engage and keep Constance and Conrad on their hoof tips!
