Forensics

By Kylee Saunders

Forensics is an exciting winter activity that involves lots of speaking. At the beginning of the year you choose one piece of writing (a poem, short story, or anything that interests you). Throughout the year you have to prac-tice projecting it with your voice. During this winter ac-tivity you practice your speech skills by reading the piece out loud as best as you possibly can.

There are five categories - declamation which means speeches; multiple reading which is a skit with friends; poetry; pros which is a piece of a book; and impromptu, which is where you are assigned a topic. At the meets you perform your piece in front of a judge who scores your speaking ability.

Northgate is the only public school in Pittsburgh that has been invited into the program. The practices are every Thursday from3 till 3:45. If you are interested in joining, see Mrs. Bruner who is in charge of forensics before No-vember 1. The meets take place on…

Crowned Friday night during the Flames football game

were Princess Allie Barker and Queen Abby Lasher. Abby was es-

corted across the field with much excitement. During the home-

coming dance, all ten girls on the homecoming court were honored

with a dance, especially our queen and her date Mark Lodge. Con-

gratulations to these wonderful ladies!

Glen James, a homeless man is one of many who has no home or place to live. But he proved that those who do good get good in return. Glen lives in Boston. He found and turned in a backpack holding $42,000 in cash and travels checks. Glen flagged down police after finding the backpack which was left by an overturned shopping cart. Days later someone had started an online fund trying to raise money to get Glen a home. To date the fund has nearly $100,000 in it. A man named Ethan Whittington set the online fund up for Glen after hear-ing about Glen’s story. Ethan explained ―I just felt that this is someone who needed to be rewarded for his good deeds.‖ Whittington thought that $250,000 and a home was a good goal for this kind man. The fund is asking for donations from $1 to$500 and clothes, computers, furniture, and jobs for Glen James. Glen James was awarded a citation of appreciation Monday from police Commissioner Edward F. David who said he showed a great deal of honesty and character.

much different. The best feature is the Touch ID, which allows the user to scan their fingerprint to unlock their phone in-stead of entering a 4-digit passcode. This phone has received good reviews but leaves every-one excited for the IPhone 6, which is said to be released in March of 2014.

Apple’s newest product, the highly an-ticipated IPhone 5s, was released late September. The new 5c phone lets buyers choose their IPhone in any color and not just black or white. It features a sleek design, light weight body, and a new fingerprint scanner called Touch ID. If you already have an IPhone 5, the new features aren’t

Wake is for readers who love an exciting and fast paced book. Janie goes through people's dreams. When someone is dreaming it is like you're in the book because you can feel what Janie is feeling through details. I would give this book four stars because it was very exciting and the whole book had multiple climaxes.

The sequel to the haunting hit in 2011 was released in theaters on, of course,

Friday the 13. It follows the same plot as in the first movie, but now the father is

being haunted. While still providing scares, the movie itself was short and less

suspenseful than the first Insidious. It included an all star cast including Patrick

Wilson, Rose Byrne, and Barbara Hershey. Most critics have given it a mediocre

score, but personally I think it was a very good movie. If you’re a fan of scary mov-

ies, or are just seeking something to get your heart racing, this is the movie for you.

Of Mice and Men a—a book review By Luisa Valeriano

Of Mice and Men is a novella written by John Steinbeck. It is a story of two migrant workers, George and Lennie. They work on a ranch and are working towards their dream. George is small and fairly intelligent, and Len-nie is tall and has a learning disability. Their dream is to live in their own house, have a garden, and Lennie wants to raise rabbits. They are close to ac-complishing their goal until certain events and people get in the way of their plans. This novella was hard for me to put down until it was finished. This book is very interesting and very realistic. John Steinbeck was actually a mi-grant worker at one time, so the ranch setting is very detailed. This book is considered a classic book of the 1930s. It isn’t a hard book to read, and the characters do swear often, but the story is riveting. I highly recommend this book to students in high school and even in middle school.

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher is a book about a girl named Han-

nah Baker who committed suicide. There is a boy named Clay Jenkins who

finds a box of seven cassette tapes on his door step and they are from Han-

nah. (Who A.K.A. is dead?) So when Clay realizes that Hannah is dead, he

is devastated. Clay loved Hannah and never got to tell her. Thirteen Reasons

Why is a book that mainly girls would like because it is a tragic love story

that could never happen. People with a sensitive heart will most likely not

want to read this because of the plot.

I sometimes hate secrets. Secrets bring so many problems. They ruined people’s lives if discovered. And secrets can be bad or good but do not want to be revealed. I have a secret but can you not tell anyone? But if I tell you it’s no longer a secret.

I’m sorry.

I cannot come.

I cannot be there.

I am sure the party will be

just as good without me.

A previous engagement

with a Mottled Houdan

makes my presence impossible.

We must conduct a dance in the dust.

There’s a slip of silence to be polished.

Please convey my regards.

New regard for the word putter,

among others.

I so much thank you

for thinking of me.

It was one of those fine October days free from summer’s heat and haze but not yet gripped by autumn chill. It was one of those fine October days when the sky’s so clear you can see the moon through the atmosphere at midday. It was one of those fine October days when the trees sport yellow and red instead of everyday summer green. It was one of those fine October days when one draws a deep breath and is grateful to be resident on Earth.
