Principal’s Report: I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our students and families a safe and happy holiday. I look forward to seeing you all again for a busy Term 2. Make sure you have all of your equipment ready to return to school on Wednesday 27th April. Warren Welham Principal (relieving) Year 7 Report Term 1 has come and gone; the first of many at Northlakes High School and as a year group you have found your feet and have successfully adjusted to life at high school. In case you missed the last newsletter Year 7 Camp was a huge success. We had 70 students and 4 staff attend.
As a year group we went to the Great Aussie Bush Camp at Tea Gardens and had 3 days of outdoor activities including High Ropes,
Canoeing, Flying Fox and Rock Climbing. We got the opportunity to make new friends as a whole year group and I was very proud of the positive attitudes and behaviour that our students showed in representation of Northlakes High School. The Year 7 Welfare day was held on the 18/3/16. The focus of the day was all about building positive relationships and to make sure students are aware of what to do and who to see for any welfare/wellbeing issues they may be faced with and what the result of this behaviour can do to students.
Year 7 are preparing for NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy). They are practicing past papers which cover numeracy, reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar. The majority of students are to be congratulated on their transition into high school. They have settled well and are enjoying their new classes, friends and activities. I would also like to acknowledge the effort Year 7 has made with their uniform you look
fantastic in your full school uniform. Please be aware as we move into the winter months that you all have the correct school jumpers. I hope you all have an enjoyable holiday and come back refreshed and ready for another exciting term at Northlakes High School. See you then. Mr Wilkinson Year 7 Advisor Year 8 Report The last week of Term 1 has been busy at Northlakes High School. On Wednesday we had the Cross Country and we saw a great number of students participating. We were also lucky enough to enjoy a concert by some very talented performers and I was pleased to see the respectful behaviour in the audience displayed by Year 8 students. Recently I have had a number of Year Advisor Awards to hand out for students who have achieved 5 Classroom Commendations. Assessment tasks have occurred in most subjects and I am delighted to see so many Commendations for excellent results in tests. Remember, it is up to each student to bring their Commendations to me in the Language Centre. Next term will be much cooler, so it is important that students and families prepare in advance. The school uniform is a plain black jumper, no logos are permitted. Also, girls may only wear tights if they have a skirt over the top. Please be sure you check that school shoes are suitable for practical subjects such as Science and Tech. All students are expected to have enclosed, black leather shoes. Uniform checks are conducted on Assembly every week and any student out of uniform will require a note from home. Notes are also required for any absence from school. Being in the classroom is the only way to learn the content for each subject. Our school provides many opportunities for extra curricula activities such as sporting teams,
debating, music and culture. Make sure you are listening on Assembly and checking the school website to find out what is on offer that may be of interest to you. Please take care of yourselves in the holidays and enjoy the break. Term 2 will be another busy term at High School, including a Year 8 Welfare Day focussing on Cyber Bullying. Fiona Davis Year 8 Advisor [email protected] Year 9 Report Although Term 1 has gone by quickly we have had a very busy term. First was our Swimming Carnival, which was great to see so many dressed in their house colours. Next came our Athletics Carnival, it was a great success and I would like to congratulate all the students in Year 9 who entered events and really tried to do their personal best. Finally, Year 9 students participated in the Cross Country, held at Northlakes High School in this last week of term. A huge thank you to all the students and families who contributed and participated in our Harmony Day celebrations.
Our cultural food stalls were AMAZING. The effort these students put in to this event must be commended! Thank you to all the families who attended the Parent Teacher interviews.
I would like to remind parents that if you did not have the chance to come to the interviews, please do not hesitate to call me or your child’s teachers. Year 9 students are invited to represent Northlakes High School in the ANZAC march on the 25th of April.
Students can meet Mrs Whitehead and Ms Bryant outside the church at Doyalson from 8:30am. Students are asked to come dressed in full school uniform. Term 2 is shaping up to be another busy term. Our Year 9 Wellbeing Day will be held on the 5th of May, which we have had the privilege of inviting Carly and Tresne (ex-contestants off My Kitchen Rules), from ‘The Happiness Mission’ to present to our Year 9 students. Students will learn strategies and techniques to develop and sustain self-confidence and positive wellbeing, focussing on the importance of a positive mind. I would like to thank the P&C for their financial assistance in making this event possible.
Students will also be preparing for NAPLAN which will take place on the 10th - 12th of May. I would like to congratulate the few Year 9 students who took the opportunity of accepting the invite to the Altitude Leadership conference, which will be held on the 31st of May in Sydney. This will allow our students to develop the skills and knowledge they need to become a successful leader within and beyond the school community. I would like to wish all students and their families a safe and happy holiday. Kerry Bissaker Year 9 Advisor Year 10 Report Attendance at School: Regular attendance is recognised as one of the most important contributors to successful learning. When a student’s attendance falls below a reasonable standard, as the Year 10 Year Advisor, I will contact parents to make sure that everything is OK and to also let you know what assistance is available. Year 10 is a critical year of schooling, so if you are planning a period of absence, please contact me. I am able to provide work so that students do not fall behind. Subject Selection for Year 11 & 12 Shortly Year 10 will need to think really seriously about their subjects for next year. Students should be thinking carefully about their career options and considering which subjects will smooth this pathway. The holidays may be a great opportunity to have a conversation with your child about their subject choices. A survey will be circulated to Year 10 next term seeking their input into the courses and subjects they would be interested in and could be offered in Year 11 and 12. 28th June Central Coast Careers Expo is to be held at Avondale College (for Years 10 & 12). This excursion is a great opportunity to
speak with many potential employers, and also to get information from a number of educational providers like Avondale College, Newcastle University, other Universities, TAFE and private learning institutions. Classroom Commendations Year 10 are encouraged to keep up the effort and earn themselves extra Classroom Commendations. Quite a few students have already earned 3 Commendations and are close to earning a Year Advisor’s Award when they reach 5. These are great items to display in your Portfolio for potential employers – especially those students seeking part-time employment. Winter Uniform With Winter fast approaching, a quick reminder about Winter Uniform standards at Northlakes. Girls should be wearing a school shirt and a plain black jumper (no logos) and may wear black tights or stockings, under their skirt. Black trousers or jeans are acceptable (no shredding or tears). The skirt should be a discreet length. Boys should wear the correct school shirt, black pants and a plain black jumper (no logos). No shredding or tears on the pants please! All students should be wearing black leather shoes. Athletics Carnival: Congratulations to all participating students. A special mention to Piper Nowland, Chelsea O Mara and James Chapel for their performances. Parent Teacher Interviews I enjoyed meeting parents on Parent Teacher night. Opportunities to meet with parents rarely occur in High School. Don’t hesitate to let me know if you need to catch up on any issues. Contact the school on 4390 0555 and ask for Sue Fulwood.
Have a safe and enjoyable break. Sue Fulwood Year 10 Advisor Year 11 Report In between a well-earned break these holidays, students should work on implementing some at home study skills ready for Terms 2 and 3 of Year 11. Students should remember to go and see their mentor teachers upon return next term to touch base and organise their weekly/fortnightly visits for Term 2. Just a reminder with the cooler months coinciding with our return that students will need to make sure that they have a plain black jumper and black pants, no tights or jeggings. Congratulations to students on completing their first term as a senior! It has been an absolute pleasure working alongside all of the year 11 students as relieving Year Advisor; Mrs Lawson will be back next term to complete your senior journey with you! Have a safe and enjoyable holidays! Miss Ewer Year 11 Advisor (Relieving) Year 12 Report It has been a hectic term for Year 12 as they have worked through many assessment tasks and commenced planning for the Graduation Ceremony in Term 3, Week 10, and for the School Formal. The School Formal has been booked in for Friday 11th November, 2016 at the Kooindah Waters Resort. Invitations will be sent out at the beginning of Term 2. The cost is $95 per ticket and a deposit of $25 is due by Friday 13th May, 2016. Please start planning to pay this deposit by the due date. The remainder of the Formal ticket can be paid off over Term 2, see details on the forthcoming invitation. A reminder that only Year 12 students are
permitted to attend the Formal. No partners from outside of the school will be permitted to attend due to the size of the venue and costs involved. This is not negotiable. To assist with the costs involved with the Formal and the Graduation Ceremony, Year 12 had their second fundraising Bake Sale event this term. They raised just over $400 and I would like to say a BIG thank you to all the student and parent 'bakers' for their contributions to this cause. We still need to raise a significant amount of money in order to attend a beautiful formal (complete with DJ and Photographer) and to present a very special gift to the school that will be of benefit to this Year 12 also, so I am asking for more help in the upcoming fundraising events. If you could encourage your son/daughter to get involved with the fundraising that would be greatly appreciated! Year 12 students are expected to engage in a significant amount of study over the holiday break. If you are unsure of what you could be doing, please speak to your class teacher as immediately as possible to get some revision to work through over the break. Please do not waste this opportunity to study!! Jovannah Knight Year 12 Advisor Careers Report On the Careers front we have been busy with the new courses for this term. Aged Care and Beauty have run and will finish at the end of this term. Our Plant Land, Environment Management Course will also finish this term and the boys and our one girl Rebecca will complete their Cert 11. The girls doing their Cert 3 in Children’s Services will continue on to term 3. Next term we are looking at two out four courses that will run for 1 day and we are able to choose from. These courses are run at school by trained staff from Central Coast
Community College and are Cert 2. These courses are also aimed at employability skills Age Care, Beauty and Hair, Personal Training and Fitness and Massage Skill set. If your child is in Year 10, 11 or 112 and would like to take up one of these courses please contact Ms Hewett in the Careers Office. We also have our 10 girls starting TAFE Hair and Beauty Course and 5 boys starting a Career to plumbing course starting next Term. Hair and Beauty will start on the 26th April at our Hair and Beauty room. It has been a busy Term 1 for Careers and SRC students. Senior Students who attended the Grip Leadership Conference in Sydney had an enjoyable time. The conference aim was to improve on leadership skills throughout school communities building on expectations of what makes a good leader.
Student’s attended sessions on, Making Meetings Effective, Make your Speeches Dynamic, How to motivate others and How to say Bye Bye to bullying. The seniors from Year 12 walked away from this conference with a better insight into what Leaders and Leadership is all about. Our SRC students have also attended Student Conference this term. We are part of the Student Action Voice which is part of the Central Coast School system.
There the students network with other students and teachers from Coast schools and come up with ideas that may help their student body and school community with ideas on many different areas example of some of the ideas that came out of the Conference are: Welfare days, Colour fun days, Buddy seats, You can talk to me stickers and safe areas around the school for students. I was very proud of the conduct and the leadership skills that were shown on this day. Our school has been chosen as the Spotlight School for term 4. This is where we show our school to other school communities and we are visited by 100 other students and teachers. On Tuesday students also attended the WAT Conference for leadership and this was also a great success for our students. Here that looks at Wellbeing issues by Tresnay and Carly who is a former student of Northlake’s High School. WAT stands for Wyong Action Team and is For Youth by Youth. Northlake’s students once again walked away from this conference with great ideas for our school community. We have had two board meetings this term with the SRC and have invited the previous leaders from our feeder schools to attend. Next term we will take nominations for the SRC for unfilled spots that have become available with students leaving. Students will vote for SRC new members.
Plumbing boys will start on the 18th April at Wyong TAFE. Ms Lois Hewett Careers Advisers/SRC Co-Ordinator Child Studies Excursion On Wednesday the 30th of March the Year 9 and 10 (200 hour) Child Studies went to Blue Haven Jelli Beanz Child Care Centre. We got the chance to interact with children of different ages ranging from 6 weeks to 5 years. We had the opportunity to hang out with the children while they were outside playing in the sandpit. We also made games up for them to play that we could join in as well, such as Cat and Mouse, Ring-a-Ring-a-Rosie and a few others.
After the 1st hour we went inside and joined in with more activities like Painting, Play-dough, Letters and Reading. Maddison Grattidge, Jade Taylor, Billie Hudson, Jade Reckless, Claudia Elly and Tiana Bennett spent the majority of their time with the 6 weeks to 3 years of age children; they got the opportunity to play dress up, building blocks and other fine motor activities. Then in the 4 to 5 year old room Taleah Pearson, Laura McHale, Alexa Saggers, Kirrily Sargeson, Courtney Smith and I (Shauvon Farquharson-Scott) got the opportunity to play a variety games indoor and outside. We went to the Centre to see the way children learn, using their Physical, Emotional and Social, Language and Cognitive development, as this has been our topic for this term. We
also went there to see how they interact with other people, what they were playing with and what games they enjoyed to play, as our topic for next term is toys and play.
All the girls enjoyed our time spent at the Child Care Centre. We also want to thank Mrs Drummond for allowing us to have this opportunity and Jelli Beanz Child Care Centre for allowing us to visit for the morning.
