Twenty local youngsters who will portray the animals in Opera Theatre of Weston’s January production of “Noye’s Fludde” (Noah’s Flood) by Benjamin Britten will sing excerpts from the opera at a special preview performance at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4 at the Northshire Bookstore.

The performance will also include an introductory talk about the opera by Stage Director Diana Stugger, Producing Director Lise Messier, and General Manager and Percussionist Anne D’Olivo.

This production of “Noye’s Fludde” will be the first oppor-tunity for many of the school children, who range in age form seven to 16, to sing on a public theatre stage with professional artists. The Youth Chorus will appear in a total of nine perfor-mances at the Paramount Theatre in Rutland and at the Weston Playhouse during the

first two weeks in January.The OTW Youth Chorus is

drawn from the Southern Vermont towns of Belmont, Ludlow, Dorset, Shrewsbury, Arlington, Hydeville, Grafton, Manchester, Fair Haven, Mount Holly, Wells, Rutland and North Chittenden.

Opera Theatre of Weston’s outreach touring program, Storybook Opera: Tropical Storm Irene, is visiting schools in these towns throughout the fall. The Youth Chorus mem-bers and their fellow students will share their own experienc-es and memories of Irene in popetry, prose and dance with the help of OTW choreographer Ashley Hensel-Browning.

Two nationally-known authors will headline this week-end’s events at Northshire Bookstore, as Vermont’s Archer Mayor and novelist Julia Alvarez discuss their new books.

The weekend starts early at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 2, when author Jack Mayer presents “Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project” at the Riley Center for the Arts at Burr and Burton Academy.

The book recounts the story of Irena Sendler, a Polish Catholic social worker during World War II, who knocked on doors in the Warsaw ghetto and asked Jewish mothers to give up their children in order to save them. She and her network rescued 2,500 Jewish children from certain death. After the war, her story was suppressed in communist Poland and for-gotten. Sixty years later, her history was resurrected by three teenage girls in Kansas working on a history project about Sendler. As a result, Sendler was nominated for the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. The event is free and open to the public.

On Friday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. at

the bookstore, Vermont author Archer Mayor returns to pres-ent the latest in his Joe Gunther series, “Paradise City.”

This latest book in Mayor’s New York Times bestselling series links a string of burglar-ies in Vermont with a murder in Boston. Archer Mayor is a death investigator, sheriff ’s deputy, and volunteer firefight-er in addition to being a best-selling novelist. He lives in Newfane, VT.

Bestselling novelist Julia Alvarez will present her mov-

ing homage to the Haitian peo-ple, “A Wedding in Haiti,” at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3.

Author of bestsellers such as “How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents” and “In the Time of the Butterflies,” Alvarez reflects on the joys and burdens of love in her new memoir about her journey to Haiti for a friend’s wedding.

The Dorset Public Library will present the watercolors of artist Britt Abbott during the month of November. A recep-tion for the artist will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the library.

All paintings will be avail-able for sale, with the library benefiting from a portion of the proceeds.

Britt Abbott’s art styles reflect her interest in all peri-ods of art history, and range from primitive to impressionis-tic to abstract. Although she has done oil painting, her new paintings are in watercolor. She draws her inspiration for her flower paintings from the beau-tiful Vermont flowers that she

photographs. Britt Abbott taught art in

Tennessee for many years after receiving a bachelor of science degree and a master of arts from the University of Memphis. She is presently a member of the Vermont Watercolor Society and an art-ist member of the Southern Vermont Art Center. She has shown her work at the Memphis Brooks Art Gallery, and has sold her work in the Van Gogh Art Gallery in New Orleans as well as at other places through-out the country.

Abbott’s home is now in Danby, VT, where she has lived for more than five years.

Britt Abbott to Present Art

Learn the fascinating sport of curling with the Equinox Curling Club (ECC), as it hosts several Learn to Curl clinics at Riley Rink in Manchester start-ing in November.

Each clinic is three hours in length. During the first hour, participants will learn basic rules, techniques, strategies, etiquette and safety. The next two hours will be spent on the ice, with hands-on instruction, practice, and a game of curling.

Clinic participants are wel-come to become members of the ECC and curl weekly through-

out the winter.The first clinic is scheduled

on Saturday, Nov. 10 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Other sessions will take place on Sunday, Dec. 9 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and Saturday, Jan. 26 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The Bennington Museum has announced that the fall issue of the Walloomsack Review is now available. The publication, co-edited by Tyler Resch and Anthony Marro, fea-tures articles on the Gilded Age mansions of Vermont, partici-pants in the Battle of Bennington, and the controver-sial Green Mountain Parkway of 1936.

One article by Chuck Byler uncovers new information about the so-called “Hessians,” the German mercenaries hired by King George III of England to try and put down the

American uprising for indepen-dence.

A major focus of the new issue is an interpretation of the architecture of several Gilded Age mansions built by 19th-cen-tury industrial magnates. Having made their fortunes elsewhere, many of these tycoons, including Everett, Billings, Vanderbilt and Webb, Park and others, came to Vermont to erect their homes throughout the state. Mansions were built in Bennington, North Bennington, Shelburne, Woodstock, Manchester and other towns.

Following the article, Resch writes about Edward H. Everett, who built an estate he called “The Orchards,” which now houses Southern Vermont College.

Also covered in the publica-tion is the proposed Green Mountain Parkway of the 1930s, which was a Great Depression project designed to attract tour-ists. The Parkway would have bisected Vermont from Massachusetts to Canada. The proposition was rejected by a statewide referendum in 1936.
