Words to GROW by!USE NATIVE PLANTS IN THE LANDSCAPE
Planting time in Louisiana is here, but before doing landscape planting, do some planning. You might also want to include one or more native trees or shrubs in your plans.Native plants have several advantages over introduced species. They are adapted to local soil conditions, and they tolerate most insects and diseases occurring in the area. In addition, they are adapted to temperature extremes common to Louisiana, and they do not require as much care as introduced species.One of the best native flowering shrubs for moist, shady areas is the Oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia). This 6-8 foot shrub bears large panicles of white flowers in April and May. In winter, after the leaves are off, the straggly, reddish stems add interest to the garden.Another choice is the fringe tree (Chionanthus virginicus), which is sometimes called Grancy Graybeard. It is a large shrub or small tree growing to about 15 feet. It produces a mass of white fringelike blooms in April. This plant requires sun or part shade and will grow in a wide variety of soils.Native azaleas (Rhododendrom canescens), sometimes called honeysuckle, have soft pink to white fragrant flowers in early spring. They thrive in part shade and require loose, moist, somewhat acid soils with fair drainage. They grow under conditions that are right for other azaleas. However, they are not as subject to attacks of insects and diseases as Indian Azalea. Native azaleas grow to a weight of 6-10 feet, and will make a handsome addition to your garden.If you need a small tree for a poorly drained (not boggy) area in your garden, then silverbell (Halesia diptera) may fill the bill. This plant will attain a height of 20 feet or more and produces clusters of white, bell-shaped flowers in April. It should be used instead of dogwood in coastal Louisiana where soils are often too wet for dogwood. It is one of the several plants called possumhaw because of its edible fruits.For wet, heavy soil, the titi or swamp cyrilla (Cyrilla racemiflora) or black titi (Cliftonia monophylla) are both good selections. Swamp cyrilla is a small tree, nearly evergreen producing white flowers in spreading to drooping racemes in June. The black titi is, again, a small, almost evergreen, native tree producing either white or pink flowers in early spring.For a show of red berries all winter, plant the deciduous holly or possumhaw (Ilex decidua). This small tree loses its leaves in fall, exposing masses of orange to red berries that persist until new leaves are full-grown in spring. It will grow anywhere except in boggy ground. Of course, like most hollies, only the female plants produce berries.Native plants that tolerate wet boggy soils are Virginia willow, mayhaw, buttonbush, red maple, wax myrtle and snowbell. Those that grow anywhere but bobby soils include hollies, magnolia, live oak, black gum, sweetleaf, pawpaw, tulip tree, sumac and may others.Why don’t you consider using native plants in your landscape? Although they may be difficult to obtain, they’ll reward you with foliage, flowers and fruit at a minimum of maintenance cost.
Although February is a short month and the days slip by rapidly, some of the most important gardening chores of the year are recommended for this month.
Some of the most important garden management practices to consider this month are:
• Prune trees and summer flower shrubs. Delay pruning spring-glowering plants until after they bloom. Prune azaleas and others in their category immediately af-ter they flower.
• Start planting roses during this month. Select a sunny location which has very good drainage. Prune already established rose plantings.
• Prepare beds for planting warm-season annuals. Don’t be too eager to plant tender annuals outside, however. Plant seeds of your tender annuals in boxes in-doors, because February often has some of our lowest temperatures.
• This is an excellent month for planting of all types of trees and shrubs. Nurseries and garden centers have their best selections now. Newly set plants still have time to become conditioned to their planting location before the warm days of spring arrive.
• If they haven’t been in the ground since last year, forget planting spring-flowering bulbs. Enjoy someone else’s plantings. They should have been set out in Octo-ber. However, late February is an excellent time to plant gladiolus corms for late spring flowering.
• Fertilize your trees this month. You’ll be surprised what an annual application of fertilizer will do to promote accelerated growth of those trees which are normally considered slow-growing.

by Tony OnellionIn the South, we have what we call Yankees and damn Yankees. Depending on whose interpretation you use, Yankees are people anywhere from Alexandria, LA to above the Mason-Dixon Line and who visit and leave. Damn Yankees are those who stay or are really from New England…or both. Damn Yankee(s) is a musical from the 1950’s in which a local version in the 1990’s starred Jerry Lewis as the Devil.Anyone who gets assimilated here eventually loses the “yankee” label and becomes a “former Yankee” or in my case, “that California guy who still roots for the 49ers”. Why, of course. Don’t you root forthe Saints and wouldn’t you do so if you lived in Boston or New York? Case closed.
Anyway…what do you expect for a column during Mardi Gras weekend? In my case, I received a visit from a damn Yankee on Thursday. Bad enough the next day was Friday the 13th and we had to work.
Joe Mathes came here to help me reach out to my new car dealers who had gone virtually completely over to The Dark Side, or exclusively social media and internet inventory systems. We’ve had our paper on line for the past five years - longer than any other independent in the New Orleans market, so we’re not adverse to using
the internet to reach others and make it convenient for traditional readers to catch us away from their usual reading venue (it used to be a “place” but now everything’s a “venue).”Wow….I’m drifting. Back to Yankees. Hate ‘em. Especially A-Rod. Oh, wrong Yankees. Like ‘em. Like to watch them slowly begin to understand our South Louisiana culture, which leads the nation in hot babes, killer food and the best college football around. Education, health and pollution still need a little work and our crop of corrupt politicians, converted to foodstuffs, could feed the world for a hundred years. So into this cauldron drops Joe, recovering from four days in Houma and a jolting introduction to Cajun food. Joe has a couple of papers like Northshore Plus and Plaquemines Plus in Kiel, Wisconsin. Now Kiel, don’t ya know, is between Milwaukee and Green Bay, you betcha! Next year, the LSU Tigers travel to Lambeau Field, a football icon named after a Frenchman in a German, Slovak and Scandinavian dominated land. It’s a country of great cheese, Cheeseheads, beautiful glacier-carved lands and beer. It’s got sausage, oomph-a polka bands, liberal colleges, cold weather and beer. It’s got frauleins, franks, freezing snow and beer. Did I mention it has beer?Joe doesn’t normally speak like a dude from the Badger State he was born into. Wisconsin’s dialect is a combination of Canadian, Fargo and Minnesota with a hard overlay of Chicago. It’s the Chicago that makes it more fun to hear and speak. We didn’t have much time to learn the intricacies of Wisconsinese, hey, once, but we kind of, don’t ya know, got the hang of it, one, you betcha! Joe and I ran into at least four Wisconsin natives during our night with Selene, the goddess of Slidell’s Mardi Gras night parades. None of them had much of dat accent, hear me, ya know…once. Joe is working on getting us a couple of tickets to Lambeau Field for next year’s LSU/Wisconsin game. It’s Lambeau in September, which means you won’t have to freeze your keister off. Up in Wisconsin, dere, dat “ting” we sit on here, once, is a keister. Going to Wisconsin means sausage, sauerkraut and beer. Cheese and beer. Brewskies and beer. I really don’t drink much beer but Wisconsin has more local breweries with national prominence than any other state (and don’t tell me St. Louis, which is a city, not a state!). I don’t eat much cheese or sauerkraut either, but the sausage is killer and the polka is kinda cool (but spare me the chicken dance).My personal experience with Wisconsin is very limited, as anyone from there reading this has already figured out, once. The University of Wisconsin has one of the five or six greatest classic football fight songs of all time - “On Wisconsin.” Chris Borland is a rookie linebacker for the 49ers, the first Badger, I believe, to ever stick with the team. I once interviewed for a radio news director’s job in Waukegan, which is really in Illinois but is damn close to Wisconsin. One of the best college football games I ever attended was the 1963 New Years’ Day Rose Bowl between the Wisconsin Badgers and the Trojans of USC, a game for the national championship, which USC won, 42 to 37. And Mike Holmgren, the former coach of the Green Bay Packers among others, played his high school football at the same high school I attended as a junior in San Francisco, Lincoln High, four years after I went there. I also attended my only Super Bowl in 1997 when the Green Bay Packers beat the New England Patriots in New Orleans for Holmgren’s only Super Bowl win as a head coach. That’s it.I don’t get coonass crazy during Festival like the old days. However, Joe and I made an afternoon and night of it on Friday the 13th. No black cats crossed our paths, but plenty of cool cats did. They had fun trying to figure out my 49er sweatshirt with me wearing a Cheesehead. Joe was laid back, not attracting much attention unless he slipped into his ‘Consin Venacular. He did. Once. Hey, what’s with this ‘once’ thing, don’t ya know? It drives me crazy, you betcha!

know him and his family. Dudley recently had open heart surgery and missed most of

February Fun Fever, to be held this year on the evening of February 27, is the Chamber’s primary fundraiser specifically dedicated to fill in the balance of monies for this cause. Past participants declare it’s an annual event they would not miss with both silent and live auctions, games, music, and plentiful food and spirits, all for $20 a ticket.
This year’s theme, “Blue Suede Shoes,” promises a fun-filled evening of rock and roll, poodle skirts and rebels without a cause! Of course if you are unable to purchase tickets or come to the event, the Chamber is welcoming donations of objects de arte and other items, services, and activities to be sold at auction.
