Northside Interceptor (NSI) Sewer Replacement Project
Wheaton Sanitary District (WSD) owns and operates three separate interceptor sewers which collect wastewater from local sewer systems and convey wastewater to the District’s Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). Local sewer systems are owned by the City of Wheaton, Village of Carol Stream, and Wheaton Sanitary District. The three interceptors include the Southside Interceptor (SSI), Northside Interceptor (NSI), and County Farm Road Interceptor (a.k.a. Northwest Interceptor).
The Northside Interceptor serves the northeast and north central portions of the District’s service area, including areas within the City of Wheaton and Village of Carol Stream. It was originally constructed in 1926 with vitrified clay pipe (VCP). In 1962, the NSI was replaced with mostly corrugated metal pipe (CMP) and some reinforced concrete pipe (RCP). The NSI ranges in size from 12-inches in diameter at St. Charles Road to 36-inches at the WWTP. The total length of the existing interceptor is approximately 5.2 miles and generally follows the topography of Winfield Creek from the WWTP, through central portions of the City of Wheaton, and to Gunderson Road in the Village of Carol Stream. Most of the route is located in easements with the remaining portions in street right-of-ways.
Due to capacity limitations, inflow and infiltration issues, sewer and associated manhole deterioration, WSD will be reconstructing and upsizing the NSI starting in May 2021. The southern section of the pipeline route will be replaced and generally upsized with 60-inch to 48-inch pipe. Portions of the northern section of the pipeline will be increased in size to 42 inches. Pipeline construction is expected to last around two years. Construction methods for the new interceptor pipeline include open-cut excavation, pipe augering, and microtunneling.
The NSI Project will start at the District’s WWTP in May 2021, with the majority of the work being done south of Roosevelt Road this calendar year. Some minor exceptions will be in the Lincoln Marsh area and in Northside Park. Work will take place north of Roosevelt Road next calendar year.
