It’s 2012 and many of us are suffering from a technological addiction: text messaging. From brief greetings to friendly reminders, quick messages like “be home for din @ 7” have replaced drawn out conversations and

answering machine messages.Recently, a Forsyth County mom has figured out a way to fuse this

impersonal technology with personal emotions, and created a thriving new business that has landed her products on the backs of Hollywood’s hippest stars.

There may be no better way to end your summer than by attending the fourth annual Trilogy Trolley

Crawl in historic Roswell happening 7-11:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18.

Tickets to the award-winning event are $40 and include an evening of festivities on the grounds of Roswell’s three historic homes: Barrington Hall, Bulloch Hall and Smith Plantation.

Attendees will receive three sampler plate food tickets, one drink, live entertainment and trolley shuttles from site to site with their purchase. They will also be entered to win a trip for two to South Beach.

The event gives guests a taste of international destinations, regional cuisine, libations and special entertainment, all while staying within Roswell city limits.

“Let’s celebrate these special historic homes and these great American cities without having to leave Roswell,” said Morgan Timmis, Roswell’s historic and cultural affairs manager.

Attendees will be able to embrace their inner hippy at Barrington Hall, which will feature a decorated VW microbus, participate in a mini-Flamenco dance lesson to the beats of Nuevo Flamenco, Brazilian and Jazz on Spanish guitar at Bulloch Hall and enjoy a shrimp cocktail and salsa lessons on the Smith Plantation’s personal South Beach.

Trolleys will be running continuously to transport guests from site to site. Parking will also be available at each location, as well as at First Baptist Church on Mimosa Boulevard. Guests will have the option to begin at the destination of their choice.

“With the addition of Endive Catering and the exceptional entertainment, we anticipate a sold out crowd,” Timmis said. “People should definitely buy their tickets early.”

Tickets are available online at www.southerntriology.com or at the following outlets: Roswell City Hall – Suite 100, Roswell Cultural Arts Center, The Chandlery Gifts, Roswell Visitors Center, Barringon Hall, Bulloch Hall, Smith Plantation and Taylor Kinzel Gallery. ■

Story & Photos By KATiE [email protected]

Purdy the cat lifts her head lazily as the bell rings above the door of Blue Bicycle Books in downtown Charleston. After inspecting the new customer for a short while, Purdy’s green eyes slide closed again as she stretches luxuriously in her favorite napping

spot—the lowest shelf of the sunny display window facing King Street. Purdy feels right at home with the 50,000 books on Blue Bicycle’s

shelves, many of which, like her, are a bit worn with age but well-loved nonetheless.

Blue Bicycle specializes in used, rare and new Charleston material. A walk down the store’s long, shelf-lined hallway is like a trip back in time. You never know what you’ll discover next.

Books on art, travel, gardening and military history share space with literary classics, original Nancy Drews, and beautiful Charleston coffee table books. A hardware catalog from 1929 sits on the counter next to a stack of signed, first-edition copies of Pat Conroy’s latest best-seller.

Blue Bicycle owner Jonathan Sanchez is always on the hunt for “new old” material for the store. Customers regularly bring in books to trade or sell. Certain rare and unusual books are sold online including a hardback edition of “Gone With the Wind” signed by author Margaret Mitchell and a version of Dr. Seuss’ “Green Eggs and Ham” printed in Latin.

Though some of the books may be a bit old and quirky, the store itself has a young, hip vibe and Sanchez finds creative ways to engage the local community in literary events.

This spring, during Charleston’s Piccolo Spoleto Festival, a two-week performing arts showcase covering the entire city, Sanchez issued a short story challenge to five South Carolina writers.

Using the opening line “I ducked into the alley,” the writers each created a five-minute story. The stories were later read aloud to a large crowd of festival-goers who filled a charming, ivy-covered alleyway on King Street next to the bookstore.

Sanchez, who is himself a writer of young adult fiction, also created YallFest to showcase the country’s top young adult authors through panels, presentations and signings, all geared toward a younger audience.

Sara Peck, a longtime Blue Bicycle employee, was amazed to see the large crowds in attendance at last year’s inaugural YallFest.

“It was great to see how many fifth to ninth graders would rather spend the weekend with books than sitting in front of the television,” said Peck. “It also helped that we gave away a lot of free pie!”

Blue Bicycle regularly hosts book signings by popular and emerging writers from the South Carolina Lowcountry such as Pat Conroy, Dorothea Benton Frank, and Bret Lott.

The next time you visit Charleston, head to upper King Street where literary treasures await. Just look for the blue bicycle parked on the street. And be sure to say hello to Purdy.

Sara Peck and the Blue Bicycle staff recommend the following books by Charleston authors:

Beach House MemoriesBy mary alice monroe

Peck says: “Monroe has been an active conservationist in South Carolina for a long time and her love for the Lowcountry’s unique ecology shines in her books. Monroe also wrote a wonderful children’s book about sea turtles, ‘Turtle Summer.’”

In 1974, America was changing, but Charleston remained eternally the same. Olivia “Lovie” Rutledge did what was expected by marrying the son of a historic Charleston family and turning over her fortune and fate to his control. Her summers, however, were her refuge,

spent in her family’s old seaside cottage on Isle of Palms, working as a “Turtle Lady” tending the loggerhead sea turtles that lay their eggs in the warm night sand before slipping back into the sea. When visiting biologist Russell Bennett arrives on the island to research the loggerheads, a shared passion for the turtles changes to a love more passionate and profound than Lovie has ever known—but one that forces her to face the most agonizing decision of her life.

The Water is WideBy pat Conroy

Peck says: “This is Conroy’s unofficial first book, a nonfiction account of the years he spent right out of college teaching kids on an isolated South Carolina island. We all know nobody does family dysfunction like Conroy, but this is an uplifting book and its nice to see what else Conroy can do as a writer.”

The island is nearly deserted, haunting, beautiful. Across a slip of ocean lies South Carolina. But for the handful of families on Yamacraw Island, America is a world away. For years the people here lived proudly from the sea but now its waters are not safe. Waste from industry threatens their very existence—unless, somehow, they can learn a new life. But they will learn nothing without someone to teach them, and their school has no teacher. Here is Pat Conroy’s extraordinary drama based on his own experience—the true story of a man who gave a year of his life to an island and the new life its people gave him.

Nowhere Else on EarthBy Josephine humphreys

Peck says: “Josephine Humphreys is one of the most elegant ladies I’ve ever met in my life and she is also a very good writer. “Nowhere Else on Earth” is set in the Civil War and she handles inter-class relationships in a very subtle way which takes skill. Many authors over-do this sort of thing in historical novels.”

In the summer of 1864, the citizens of North Carolina’s Robeson County have become pawns in the devastation created by the Civil War. The Indian community, loosely known as Scuffletown, must contend with the marauding Union Army but is also harassed by the desperate Home Guard, conscripting youths into the deadly forced labour of the Confederacy. Young Rhoda Strong’s two brothers have joined a rebellious gang led by handsome, charismatic Henry Berry Lowrie, the hope of Scuffletown. To her mother’s dismay, Rhoda soon follows. ■

Forsyth, Fulton honor top teachers of the year

Forsyth County Board of education Chairman Tom cleveland and Anna Aigner-Muehler, the Forsyth teacher of the year.

By ALDO [email protected]

The first day of German class at Forsyth Central High School, Anna Aigner-Muehler dresses in full Austrian costume. Some may think she’s, “a little nuts,” said Aigner-Muehler,

selected as Forsyth County’s Teacher of the Year for 2012. . But she gets her lesson across.

“This is a wonderful profession. It’s truly a calling,” she said.Aigner-Muehler grew up and attended Forsyth County

schools; graduating from South Forsyth High School, where she was valedictorian.

“I have deep roots in this system and deep roots and connections with the teachers who’ve made me — and I thank them from the bottom of my heart. They’ve made me, and Forsyth County is part of who I am.”

After graduation from the county, she got her Bachelor’s degree from Agnes Scott College and a Master’s from Leslie University. She started her teaching career as a Fulbright Teaching Assistant in Austria and returned to Forsyth County in 2000 and joined Central HS.

“I am, simply put, a born and bred, dyed-in-the-wool, natural teacher,” she wrote in her essay submission application.

Aigner-Muehler was chosen from 34 teachers who were selected by their schools to represent them in the county level. Using scores from the essays and interviews, a selection committee narrowed their search to three finalists. The two other finalists were — Antoinette “Toni” Sullivan, an art teacher at Coal Mountain Elementary School and Tracey Heffelfinger, a math teacher at Little Mill Middle School.

Rudy Hampton, principal at Central, said Aigner-Muehler brings culture to the classroom, practicality and relates to the students.

“She integrates technology into teaching,” said one student about Aigner-Muehler style. Another said: “She interacts with us, instead of sitting at a desk.”

On August 17, HGTV (Home & Garden Television) will air an hour-long special during which the keys to a brand new home in the Serenbe community south

of Atlanta will be handed over to the winner of this year’s HGTV Green Home Giveaway.

HGTV house planner Jack Thomasson and interior designer Linda Woodrum shopped locally for unique furnishings for the Green Home, travelling to Roswell to seek inspiration from the four muses of Muse & Co. Fine Art.

When you enter Muse & Co., it’s easy to see why the HGTV team chose this trendy gallery. Owners Donna McDonald, Judy Goldberg and Sheila Grubb partnered with

Vicki Werbalowsky of La Bella Vie, a custom furniture and home design store next door, to create a warm and welcoming space full of stunning contemporary fine art.

The gallery is divided into small spaces, each fully decorated to represent living and dining rooms. Soft rugs, comfortable couches and stylish chairs invite you to relax as you admire the surrounding sculptures and paintings.

“Art can be intimidating,” said Goldberg. “It’s one thing to admire a large, bold painting hanging on a gallery wall, but another thing entirely to envision that same painting hanging in your own living or dining

women in art

room. We wanted our clients to see how easily contemporary art can fit into a variety of décor situations.”

Webalowsky, a long-time interior designer, creates the gallery’s home vignettes using a variety of unusual lighting fixtures, accent tables and accessories as well as eye-catching furniture pieces.

“So many people forget two important elements when creating a beautiful home,” said McDonald. “They spend their entire budget on furniture, when it’s actually lighting and artwork which make the strongest impression, really completing the home.”

“You may have a traditional dining room and assume that contemporary art will not work with

your décor,” said Webalowsky. “It’s our job to show you how to blend

and edit your existing look to include contemporary art and more modern design elements. The result can be very stylish and yet completely comfortable.”

Kathryn Fortson, a Roswell artist, enjoys the synergy between the designers, artists and clients at Muse & Co.

“I love to come into Muse and see what the gals have done with the gallery spaces, “ she said. “The colors and styles of the rugs, pillows and furnishings inspire me as an artist and help me understand the latest trends and what people want to see in their homes. It’s not about matching paintings with fabrics. It’s about tuning in to how people feel about their home and the type of space they wish to create.”

Before the HGTV Green Home was completed, the Muse & Co. ladies drove to Serenbe, hauling a load of furniture and a variety of paintings from local artists.

“We knew what Jack and Linda were looking for in terms of color and texture and offered a variety of possibilities,” said Goldberg. “It was really cool to survey the space in the early stages and envision the final product. Jack and Linda loved everything we showed them.”

The Green Home living room features a unique coffee table and two contemporary chairs from La Bella Vie’s Pure Home Collection, featuring FSC-certified wood and eco-friendly upholstery materials.

To add color to the room, the Muse ladies suggested a lively painting by Signe & Genna Grushovenko representing a group of young cyclists, a nod to Serenbe’s active outdoor lifestyle.

In the master bedroom, a painting from Fortson’s mixed media “Journal Series” gives a modern vibe to the traditional décor while Jeff Surace’s “Farm Series” adds a whimsical touch to the kids’ bedroom.

For those who feel the need to add an artistic touch to their own homes, the ladies of Muse & Co. make house calls. Just as they did for the Green Home, Muse & Co. offers a complimentary home assessment service to all clients, bringing their expertise and inspiration to individual home spaces.

“We bring the art and Vicki brings the accessories and together we create an amazing space,” said Goldberg. “That’s what the name Muse & Co. is all about. The muses or ‘unseen creative energies’ at work.” ■

A fifth-grade teacher at Alpharetta Elementary for four years, Pamela Haight knew she wanted to be a teacher from an early age.

“When I was in fifth grade, I spent every morning reading with kindergartners,” said Haight, a product of Fulton County Schools from elementary through high school. “I loved every second of it. At Christmastime, the teacher gave me my first ‘teaching ornament,’ which I still have to this day.”

A graduate of Milton High School, Haight went to the University of Georgia, graduating summa cum laude in early childhood education, followed by a master’s degree from Kennesaw State University. She infuses her classroom with constant activity, with the sounds of children singing and laughing coming through loud and clear.

“Maybe you’ll see my fifth-graders standing on chairs, acting out ‘Hamlet,’ or dressed all in black with berets reciting original poetry,” she laughed. “We are different, but we like it.”

Haight does not have a drama background – something most people assume she does – but traces her love of performance to her childhood.

“My parents took me to see ‘Annie’ one time, and [after that] I would stand up in public places and sing ‘Tomorrow’ at the top of my lungs,” Haight said, laughing at the memory.

Haight believes students are motivated when learning is fun. She was frustrated by how students struggled to learn material in her class, yet could recite all the words from a Justin Bieber song just a day after it was released. She began mixing popular music with her class material and students quickly began learning the parts of speech through tunes such as “The Lazy Adjective Song,” a tribute to a Bruno Mars song, or “Adverbs Modify Verbs,” a parody to a Willow Smith song.

While many teachers are focused on a future that includes a climb up the administration ladder, Haight, whose mother still works as a third-grade teacher, is completely content in the classroom.

“[In five or 10 years], I’ll probably be doing the same thing I’m doing right now: teaching in a classroom during the day and sitting in a classroom taking professional development classes at night,” said Haight. “It’s hard for me to imagine not working directly with kids.” ■

Get your walking shoes ready and lace up for a worthwhile cause. The10th Anniversary

Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer is slated for the weekend of Oct. 6-7.

The flagship event of It’s The Journey, Inc., the Atlanta 2-Day Walk takes participants through the streets of Atlanta with a 20-mile walk on Saturday, a festive party and hotel lodging overnight, and the final 10-mile portion of the walk on Sunday ending with lunchtime closing ceremonies.

According to It’s The Journey executive director Kimberly Goff, the unique aspect of the Atlanta 2-Day Walk is that all of the money raised during the event stays here in the state of Georgia.

“Every step that’s taken during our event benefits more than 100,000 Georgians each year,” Goff explained. “The Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer has generated more than $8 million in funding resulting in 169 grants to breast health programs throughout Georgia that provide screening and diagnosis, treatment, education and support services.”

Individuals and teams can “Do the 2,” with each walker responsible for raising $1,000 if they walk Saturday and Sunday

– or just $500 in donations if they participate in the Sunday walk only.

This year’s 10th anniversary event will begin Saturday at

the host hotel, the Marriott Marquis, with walkers

making their way to Agnes Scott College in Decatur for lunch.

Participants will then walk back to the hotel for a

total of 20 miles Saturday. On Sunday, the 10-mile route will take

walkers from the hotel through Georgia Tech and the Virginia-Highlands before arriving for a celebration at Atlantic Station.

“Nearly everyone today has been touched by breast cancer in some way,” added Goff. “But it doesn’t have to be faced alone. So we encourage Northside Woman readers to join us in our efforts. Get together with others and form a team. Make it a fun girls’ weekend. Our event is entertaining and inspiring, and it makes tremendous strides in strengthening Georgia’s breast cancer community.”

For more information about getting involved as a walker or sponsor, or to make a donation to the Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer, visit www.2daywalk.org, email [email protected] or call 404-531-4111. ■

Guenther had in mind when she started start her T-shirt company in October 2010. She took her design idea, added memories of growing up with a mother whom she described as a “hugger,” and gave her company a name that was entirely appropriate: TxtHugs.

“So many times we text people a message and they don’t know the emotion behind it,” Guenther said. “I want to spread ‘positive-ness.’ And that’s what this is all about.”

Guenther’s entrepreneurial motivation stemmed from the memory of her close friend Adrienne Eaton-Smith, a vivacious optimist who passed away in 2009 after battling various forms of cancer. Eaton-Smith always dreamed of starting a business with her girlfriends, and her energy and spirit live on through Guenther’s company.

“I was devastated [by her death], but also motivated to fulfill the dream I shared with Adrienne of starting my own business,” said Guenther, a mother of two.

After initial Internet research, Guenther found that adding double brackets to a word could imply ((hugging)), and so it became the inspiration for her first line of T-shirts.

“Hugs are universal; they make everyone feel better, and even texting a hug can make something that’s usually impersonal a little more caring,” she said.

But TxtHugs is more than just a business. Guenther

has implemented a philanthropic angle in large part a tribute to her friend, Adrienne. For every shirt with the breast cancer message, a 10% donation is made to organizations active in the fight against breast cancer. A similar donation is made from the sales of the ((hope)) 4 Africa line, with proceeds going to the Africa Millennium Foundation, an organization that helps African women and children.

Two years after launching TxtHugs, Guenther was catapulted to national prominence when she was asked to contribute her T-shirts for the 2012 Teen Choice Awards. Her products went into the “goody bags” for celebrity winners and presenters at the show.

“I initially thought it might be a hoax,” laughed Guenther, recollecting the original phone call. “But I soon realized the organizers were legitimately interested in my work.”

The producers left it to her to decide which designs to include in the bags, so Guenther formed a focus group to determine which of her T-shirt lines would best reflect

her company. She ultimately decided on two: ((hope)) 4 Africa and g2g USA. Eaton-Smith’s two children modeled the selected T-shirts, which was something Guenther said was very special.

Although she was thrilled to have the opportunity to provide the Teen Choice Awards with her personalized T-shirts, Guenther noted it was really “just a bonus.”

“If nothing else, I hope the celebrities and everyone else wearing my shirts take away the same message: texting can be positive and make people happy,” said Guenther.

Within the next few years, Guenther hopes to expand TxtHugs beyond inspirational T-shirts to something even greater, whether it be additional products or even her own cause. With constant motivation from Eaton-Smith, Guenther said she’s constantly coming up with new ideas and new ways to spread happiness.

“From a small ‘leap of faith’ idea a few years ago to the Teen Choice Awards, TxtHugs has really come a long way,” said Guenther. ■

Normally, when Wal-Mart switches out the sunscreen and pool toys for back packs and pencils I feel

the familiar back- to- school panic! Soon, I will be packing lunches, checking behind kids to makes sure they are keeping up with school work, and other school related tedium. When I see little children excited to begin a new school year, I am awed at how quickly time marches on. I know they will be teenagers oh so soon!

I admit my back to school thoughts this year are different than in years past. My son is a senior in high school, and I remember very clearly the year he started kindergarten. My son was not exactly thrilled to begin kindergarten. I remember the second week of school with me pulling him kicking and screaming into my car to be dropped off in the carpool line. I also remember a conversation that I had with my daughter when she was about 3 or 4 years old. Somebody we knew was going away to college, and she couldn’t understand that they didn’t come home to eat dinner and sleep at home. She proudly announced that she wasn’t going to college! I knowingly smiled and told her I wouldn’t be mad if she changed her mind.

Each year since then has brought slightly different school preparations for

our family. Years ago, I could no more imagine leaving my kids at a far away campus than my daughter could imagine not reading her cherished bedtime books with momma and daddy. This summer, we visited college campuses! From the first steps down the kindergarten

hallway to the long hallways in high school, our kids walk

with greater and greater confidence. Soon, they begin to walk their own journey. Each milestone moves us toward the day we leave them at their chosen college campus. They begin to function

with greater and greater independence. I can see

that my son and his friends are ready for this transition. That

makes me happy and sad. He won’t live with us much longer, but I know that he is about to take some giant steps toward his much anticipated independence. It won’t be long before I won’t need to make the yearly journey to purchase carts full of paper, pens, and binders! ■

As millions of Georgia kids prepare to return to school this month, Easter Seals North Georgia has launched

“Make the First Five Count,” a national awareness effort designed to give children at risk of developmental delays the right support they need to be ready for school.

“The first five years are the most critical years of every child’s life,” says Donna Davidson, president and chief executive officer of Easter Seals North Georgia. “As parents, we have to take the proper precautions to ensure our children are reaching their developmental milestones.”

Davidson noted every year, more than one million children with unidentified disabilities and delays enter school with learning and health issues that put them far behind their peers.

In Georgia, nearly 60,000 kids under the age of three are at risk of developmental delays or disabilities that will set them back when they start school. Yet fewer than 10 percent of these children will receive early intervention services.

Part of the difficulty in getting help for children with disabilities is the cuts in funding, said Davidson.

“It’s harder than ever for families to access care, because essential programs to treat young children with disabilities are chronically underfunded and in danger of being scaled back even further this year,” she noted.

Currently Georgia receives $14.5 million from the federal government to support early intervention services – a decrease of $14,000 from the previous year despite the fact the numbers of children who could benefit from services continues to grow.

To best help their children, parents are encouraged to take the online “Ages & Stages Questionnaire” at www.makethefirstfivecount.org to assess their child’s developmental progress. The questionnaire is designed to screen children, from birth to five years old, to detect early signs of developmental delays, explained Davidson.

At the website, parents can also reference the “5 Minute Guide to 5 Areas of Development” which outlines the developmental milestones children should reach by age five in the areas of cognitive, sensory, language, social/emotional, and movement. ■

“Mom, are you gonna die?”This was my oldest daughter, Kelly’s, first question

when I told her I had Multiple Sclerosis. “Not only am I going to live a long time, I will be chasing around

your kids one day,” I told her.She was 14 when I made her that promise. That was 16 years ago. Today, as I write this while on vacation with my family, I’ve just

sat down for the first time. That is only because my nearly 3-year-old grandson, Kelly’s oldest child, is napping. We have been on the beach and in the waves all morning.

When I made that promise all those years ago, I really had no idea if I could keep it. But I knew I had to try. I looked at what I was eating (too much fried and spicy food—I’m from New Orleans, so what do you expect?) and what I was doing (running five miles a day to work off the food, which I wouldn’t be able to do much longer).

It didn’t happen all at once, but after some fits and starts, I changed my diet to eat less and better food (except for my trips home to New Orleans) and my workout regimen to swimming a mile three days a week and working with a trainer on the other days.

According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, studies have clearly demonstrated the benefits of exercise for people with MS. Patients who participate in an aerobic exercise program have better cardiovascular fitness, improved strength, better bladder and bowel function, less fatigue and depression, a more positive attitude. This news doesn’t surprise me in the least.

Of course, on weeks like this, when I’m at the beach with kids and grandkids, I don’t eat the best food and don’t do the workout routines. But I do walk on the beach. I do swim in the waves, and I do get buried in the sand up to my neck. And I stay up too late, laughing with my husband and girls about all the old times.

If I ever forget why I made the commitment to be well, to fight like heck against a disease I couldn’t get rid of but could surely keep in check, all I have to do is think about this week and these days and these moments and what they have meant to me. ■
