TEACHING 2030: What We Must Do for

Our Students and Our Public Schools

Now and in the Future

• Teach the Googled learner, who has grown up on virtual reality games and can find out almost everything with a few taps of the finger;

• Work with a student body that’s increasingly diverse (by 2030, at least 40 percent of students will be second-language learners);

• Prepare kids to compete for jobs in a global marketplace where communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving are the “new basics”;

• Use sophisticated tools to measure student learning and fine-tune instruction; and

• Connect teaching to the needs of communities as economic churn creates instability, pushing schools to integrate health and social services with academic learning.

• Programme which is normally taught over

two years, grades 11 and 12 in the U.S

DP Overview continued

• Students study six courses at higher level or standard level

• At least 3 of the 6 courses must be taken at the higher level (HL) for the DP

• Students must choose one subject from each of groups 1 to 5, thus ensuring breadth of experience in languages, social studies, the experimental sciences, and mathematics.

• The sixth subject may be an arts subject chosen from group 6, or the student may choose another subject from groups 1 to 5

EE / TOK / CAS

• The extended essay is a requirement for students to engage in independent research through an in-depth study of a question relating to one of the subjects they are studying.

• Theory of Knowledge is an epistemological course designed to encourage each student to reflect on the nature of knowledge by critically examining different ways of knowing (perception, emotion, language and reason) and different kinds of knowledge (scientific, artistic, mathematical and historical).

• Creativity, Action, Service requires that students actively learn from the experience of doing real tasks beyond the classroom. Students can combine all three components or do activities related to each one of them separately.

Assessment

• Written examinations at the end of the

programme marked by external IB examiners.

• Internal and external assessments tasks also

occur in the school, which are either initially

marked by teachers and then moderated by

external moderators or sent directly to external

examiners.

• These assessments differ by subject areas and

level of the course (higher or standard).

• In each subject students’ assessments will

be evaluated; in each course they will

earn a mark of 1-7.

• The diploma is awarded to students who

gain at least 24 points.

• Students can be awarded up to three

additional points for their combined results

on TOK and EE.

What about AP?• IB DP will not replace AP at NHS, but it

will provide another oppotunity, one that

extends the MYP framework

• The full diploma progamme is arguably

the most beneficial as it is the most

comprehensive, but some students may

elect to enroll as Diploma Programme

Course students (formerly known as

certificate students); these “a la carte”

courses will work similarly to our current

AP offerings

• IB DP courses will work in a more

interconnected and cross-discipline

manner than individual AP courses

• IB DP courses include a variety of

external and internal (continuous)

assessments throughout the course of

study, in contrast to the typical one three-

hour AP test

Applicant Expectations

• Students will need to work with their

counselors and with the IB Diploma

Programme Coordinator to ensure all

requirements are satisfied

• The application asks for students to

prove the following: 1) Potential for practice and performance

2) Interest in Diploma Program

3) Understandings of expectations of DP

Why IB DP?
