NORTHWEST
CHIPPINGS
Hello to all the club members ! I want to thank Marlo for doing a great lecture on color ! I never took Art so when I painted something it came out of a little bottle I purchased at the Arts and Crafts store . That's why I have 25 bottles of different paint. Now I will experiment on making my own colors. Get your projects started or finished for the show and fill out the regis-tration for your show piece or pieces . I will not be to the September meetings . I will be headed back to Ohio to visit relatives and friends and will be there most of the month . See you for the October meetings ! Happy Birthday to everyone who has a September Birthday !
Ronald Dyer President

Some Sr. Center & Library Carving Class Schedules
Hi everyone. Did it get warm enough for you there for a few days? It
looks like it might be cooling off again here in the Federal Way area.
Needless to say, I haven’t been on the computer much lately, just trying to
keep these little technical heaters turned off as much as possible. I think
the television really puts out a lot of heat. But as I take a look now trying
to find Frank C Russells address I have found a power carving manual put
out by the Foredom company online. It is in PDF form and looks to be
quite helpful. If you are interested take a look-see at
http://www.foredom.net/otherdocs/CarvingManual.pdf There are 27 pages
and it takes you through carving a spoon, a canvas back duck and a hum-
mingbird pin with a Foredom Power Tool. If you don’t have any of Frank
Russell’s power carving books this might be worthwhile to download.
Information is already online for the 5th Northwest Carving Academy
in Ellensburg, Washington. The classes have already been planned and
instructors invited. That has to be great organization. You can find all you
need to know at this site. http://www.nwcarvingacademy.com/
I know there are plans online somewhere for homemade dust collectors
but I didn’t happen to find much this time. Here are a couple but I know
there are better ones somewhere. Check with your fellow carvers. There
are also plans for a collector in Frank C Russell’s book “Carving Realistic
Animals with Power” but it is rather elaborate.

PROGRAM
Due to another last minute cancellation, our program chair came through again and presented an interesting lesson on the use of the color wheel in relation to your carvings. Much was learned about mixing and using the basic colors (red, yellow, and blue) for all the colors you will ever need.

I’ve come across a unique carver in Denny Bell, who carves on the banks of the Des Plaines River in Southeast Wisconsin. He does a variety of subjects in a variety of methods from carving & pyrography to chain saw. You will enjoy seeing his birds and everything else including archi-tectural pieces. Find his web site at http://www.cedarstump.us/index.html. Denny has a lot of carving tips on the site also so be sure to read those.
It is getting to be the season to be planning Christmas carvings so take a look at Reasons to Believe, The World of Santa Claus. It lists a variety of carvers and the Santa Claus carvings they have done. I’m sure you’ll get some great ideas. http://www.reasonstobelieve.com
Are you a serious power carver without a dust collector? You can go to the Fishcarver.com website for directions on how to build your own….economically….and it is quiet. Looks to me like it might be a little large but maybe not and certainly not if you have a work shop. The ad-dress is http://www.fishcarver.com/making_a_dust_collector.htm
This website has some beautiful wooden utensils. It is a celebration of Arbutus (Madrona) Trees by Cortes Island, BC artisan Ron Bazar and has a ton of interesting facts about some exotic hardwoods. Be sure to read his stories about the trees. It’s fascinating. Well worth your time to visit here. http://www.arbutusarts.com
This next link is not really about carving but I think extremely interest-ing and it is about sculpture and wood. The images were e-mailed to me so I finally found where they were posted on-line for you. Jennifer Maes-tre creates her pieces from the tips of new pencils and they are quite intri-guing. (This website has a plethora of fun “stuff” to browse through, click on amazing)

Minutes General Mtg. Aug 9, 2013
Pot Luck announced at 6:00pm, let’s eat this great food. What a great offering of assorted foods.
Business meeting called to order at 7:00pm by President Ron Dyer.
Ron: continued with current news around the area, Betty Miller was not present because of surgery on her left elbow on Thurs Aug 8, 2013. We really missed her, she takes all the pictures for the newsletter.
Betty Miller: had also nominated Richard LaPlante for lifetime membership, related to over ten years of vol-unteer work for the club. Richard has given notice that he was resigning his positions as of the end of the year. We were all shocked it will take four volunteers to replace everything that Richards has been doing for the club. Richard, thank you for all you have done over these many years.
Washington State Fair; Puyallup WA: had several club member volunteering their time for seminar and teaching times.
Marlo Thompson, Vice president: spoke about next month’s presentation, asking for people to sign up and commit to be present and engaged, bring your carving knives.
Peggy DeMent, Vender Chair: reports we only have nine tables and or spaces sold at this time, to the venders/sellers for the November Carvers Show, Puyallup WA.
Vicky Rowe: gave the financial report; Checking account: $51.12; Received today: coffee $8.50; Name tag fees: .25 cents; Raffle: $18.00; Capital Woodcarvers club table: $20.00; Membership: $25.00.
Marlo Thompson is doing the program tonight: The seminar was on The Color Wheel; and how to make
one for your personal use. She begins with the three primary colors, “Red, Blue & Yellow, plus Black and
White” to make all the colors we would ever use. Choosing color for carving projects can be challenging to
anyone. I’m sure this information was well received by those in the arts or those working with colors a lot.
David was a great help with illustrating the different colors for her, mixing the paints and applying them to
paper. Charley Mitts was also a helper.
Show & Tell:
Jim Cotter: Turned platter and salt Mill, Maple and ECT.
Jim Collins: wood burning of “Grandpa’s Tractor” and Barn, Birch and Poplar.
Richard Mazza: just finished two flutes, Alaskan White cedar and Purple Heart.
Marlo Thompson: clock board.
Meredith Doll: Otter, Basswood.
Walt Bedell: Old mill with water wheel, Baltic Birch Plywood.
Bob Harkness: Horse and English Starling, Basswood.
John Nickerson: Red Oak platter with walnuts and Maple platter with epoxied inlay.
Richard LaPlante: Otters at play, Basswood; a 25 year experience.
Raffle:
Members and friends present; 30
Meeting closed at 9:00pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Peggy DeMent, Secretary

A DIFFERENT DRUG PROBLEM
The other day, someone at a store in our town read that a Methamphetamine lab had been found in an old farmhouse in the adjoining county and he asked me a rhetorical question, “Why didn’t we have a drug problem when you and I were growing up?”
I replied, I had a drug problem when I was young: I was drug to church on Sunday morning. I was drug to church for weddings and funerals. I was drug to family reunions and community socials no matter the weather. I was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults. I was also drug to the woodshed when I disobeyed my parents, told a lie, brought home a bad report card, did not speak with respect, spoke ill of the teacher or the preacher, or if I didn’t put forth my best effort in everything that was asked of me.
I was drug to the kitchen sink to have my mouth washed out with soap if I uttered a profanity. I was drug out to pull weeds in mom’s garden and flower beds and cockleburs out of dad’s fields. I was drug to the homes of family, friends and neighbors to help out some poor soul who had no one to mow the yard, repair the clothesline, or chop some firewood, and , if my mother had ever known that I took a single dime as a tip for this kindness, she would have drug me back to the woodshed.
Those drugs are still in my veins and they affect my behavior in everything I do, say, or think. They are stronger than cocaine, crack, or heroin; and, if today’s children had this kind of drug problem, America would be a better place.
God bless the parents who drugged us.
