Summer of Space on KBTCIn 1976, PBS aired the debut season of NOVA, which included its first episode on the topic of space travel, The Search for Life. It asked the question, “Does life exist outside this planet?” and it documented the building of the Viking 1 Orbiter and Lander two years prior to its landing on Mars. Shortly after in 1980, the thirteen-part series Cosmos with Carl Sagan aired on PBS, and it remains one of the most widely watched series in the history of American public television.

From the beginning, PBS has fed your sense of wonder, but has also been your trusted guide, providing you with an in-depth look at the science behind our nation’s space exploration program and we’ve been your archivist, documenting and telling the stories of America’s efforts and achievements in space.

I’m excited to invite you to join KBTC for the Summer of Space starting in July! Visit the farthest reaches of the universe, blending past and present as we celebrate both the 50th anniversary of the moon landing and the latest advances in space exploration. Be sure to scan the viewer guide for all of the terrific specials this month, including the highly anticipated six-hour film from American Experience: Chasing The Moon, which airs on July 18 at 6pm, and our very own Northwest Now special Earthrise - a firsthand retelling of the Apollo 8 mission with astronaut Bill Anders on July 18 at 7 pm.

I hope you enjoy all that we have in store for you this month! In the immortal words of the PBS stargazer himself, Jack Horkheimer, I encourage you to “Keep looking up!” and look to KBTC for the Summer of Space!
