n November, educators, donors and NWOSF board members gathered to hear the results of the recently completed study that looked at the academic and personal

outcomes of students enrolled in the early years (1999-2001) of our tuition assistance program. Alex Schuh, PhD, founder of Frontier 21 who conducted the study presented his findings along with information obtained by the Lourdes College School of Education.

These findings indicated that the majority of students experienced both academic and personal success following elementary school. Of the students contacted:

397% graduated from high school

395% attended college for some length of time

325% graduated from college

366% were currently attending college

These statistics affirm the goals of NWOSF but the equation that makes up this success is a total team effort. Our students are motivated to succeed in school and life through the efforts and sacrifices of their parents, the nurturing environment of the private school and the tuition assistance provided by the Northwest Ohio Scholarship Fund.

This school year NWOSF is providing $666,000 in tuition assistance to 688 elementary school students in Northwest Ohio. These students are attending 44 elementary schools and the average scholarship is $952. Parents are required to pay a minimum of $500 towards tuition each year. We are investing in our community’s future by providing access to educational choice, and the results of the Frontier21 study provides encouragement to continue and even expand this investment.

Board Member Highlight

ather Don Vettese, S.J., is an active member of the Northwest Ohio

Scholarship Board and has served since 2002. He currently is the President of International Samaritan formerly known as Central American Ministries in Ann Arbor which he founded in 1995 while serving as president of St. John’s Jesuit High School. Father Vettese began taking students to work in orphanages in Guatemala City in the early 1990’s. At that time, he recognized the need to raise consciousness about the living conditions of the poor in Guatemala City. Vettese retired from St. John’s Jesuit High School to work full-time as President of International Samaritan. He travels the world raising awareness of the unique needs of those people living in garbage dump communities.

orthwest Ohio Scholarship Fund recipients Jeremy and Ryan Schiel made the most of their education and their scholarships. They began as students at Queen of Apostles, a Central City Ministry

School. After graduation they attended St. John’s Jesuit Academy through the 2020 Jesuit Scholars program for academically talented students.

While at St. John’s they both earned the rank of Eagle Scouts, which is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America. They participated in band and wrestling, and also volunteered with the service organization Good Sports, now called Toledo Happy Helpers, assisting people with disabilities.

They had lived with their disabled grandpa for the first 14 years of their lives and got involved through him. They did mission work while at St. John’s, Jeremy traveling to Guatemala and Ryan traveling to Mexico.

They went onto Boston College to earn their degrees graduating in 2008, Ryan in Computers and Math and Jeremy in Nursing. In 2009 and 2010, Jeremy was stationed in Korea at Camp Casey and Ryan in Afghanistan. Today, United States Army 1st Lt. Jeremy Schiel is stationed at Ft. Campbell in Kentucky and 1st Lt. Ryan Schiel is stationed at Ft. Lewis in Washington.

SHighlighting Our Schools

t. Catherine of Siena Catholic School is a PreK-8 Catholic School located at 1155 Corbin in West Toledo. The school was opened in 1931 as the Great Depression lifted and many families moved to West Toledo. Currently, the school has an enrollment of 199.

Twenty-five students from 17 families are each receiving Northwest Ohio Scholarship Fund scholarships. The school offers many different activities for students including Power of the Pen, Quiz Bowl, CYO sports, a 6th grade Outdoor Education Camp and an 8th grade Washington D.C. trip. As posted in the school website, St. Catherine’s is committed to instilling the values of its Christian heritage and assisting each child in achieving their academic success.

School Principal Sandi Shinaberry says of those students attending the school on scholarship, “If we didn’t have the NWOSF program our children would not be able to learn and practice their faith here at St. Catherine’s on a daily basis.”

Tax Credit Bill Introduced for Donations to Educational Scholarship Organizations

ep. Kris Jordan introduced in December legislation to the Ohio House of Representatives to create a scholarship tax credit program in Ohio designed to enhance educational opportunities for students and provide long-term savings

for state and local governments.

The bill would permit a dollar-for-dollar credit to any business, individual or married couple that donates to an authorized educational scholarship organization (ESO).

An ESO would then offer scholarships to students to attend the private school of their choice. For more information about the bill contact Senator Kris Jordan’s office at (614) 466-8086 or e-mail at [email protected]
