NORTHERN LIGHTS

Norway

Location The capital Oslo is located on 60 degrees north, and most of the country is located north of this latitude. Approximately half of the country is located north of the Arctic Circle. Bordering the Atlantic ocean in the west and south, Sweden in the east and Finland and Russia in the north-east. The Arctic Ocean is the northern barrier.

Gateway Oslo.

Climate Norway is one of very few countries in the world that actually has four seasons. This does not, however, put any kind of restriction on outdoor activities, you can for instance go skiing, diving, fishing, climbing, glacier walking, rafting or reindeer sledding. In Norway they have a saying: “There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing!” Compared to most other places at a similar latitude Norway has a very mild climate thanks to the warming effects of the Gulf Stream flowing along its coast. The summer temperature in Norway varies from 5°C to 35°C, so you should be prepared for everything. The average temperature in Oslo in July is 17.3°C, and an average June day in Oslo has almost 19 hours of daylight.

In Tromsø the average temperature is 12.4°C. A woollen sweater, a warm windproof coat and good shoes are necessary, but do not forget your swim wear either!

Currency Norwegian Krone (NOK).

Voted “the world’s most unspoilt destination” in 2004 by the National Geographic Traveller Magazine, Norway remains one of the great natural wonders of the world. Norway is a land of sublime natural beauty. Along its long, lonely coast – still the true heart of the country – waterfalls plunge into pristine fjords fringed by primeval forests. Majestic peaks crowned with glaciers rise sheer out of the sea. The air is so fresh you can taste it, and from the Midnight Sun to the polar night, the refraction of light on the countless islands adds its own veil of mystery. Endless day, endless night. Each season casts its own spell. Between the extremes of Midnight Sun and Polar Night, and between the temperate south and the Arctic north, natural light always plays an important role, dramatizing the scenery and enhancing the experience. Whenever you choose to travel, your visit will be unique.

MS POLARLYS

The Hurtigruten (Norwegian Coastal Voyage) ships have been part of Norway’s lifeline for over a century. Beneath the Midnight Sun or the mystical Northern Lights, daily departures across the Arctic Circle from Bergen to Kirkenes, take us right to the heart of coastal Norway. Calling at 34 ports, most never visited by commercial cruise liners, our ships deliver freight, post and passengers to remote communities, some of which are home to just a few hundred people. Sailing along this beautiful coastline, through magical fjords to enchanted islands, we enjoy a genuine, friendly and unpretentious voyage which is truly Norwegian. As we weave in and out of narrow inlets, we sail along some of the world’s most beautiful coastline, nearly always in sight of land. Many of our ports of call are tranquil hamlets on tiny islands whose inhabitants depend for their very existence on the Hurtigruten ships to bring the communities essential supplies and reunite families and friends.

Tourists from across the world come to enjoy the magnificent scenery and informal atmosphere on board. Travelling on the Hurtigruten is the natural way to meet those who live and work along its shores. Many communities still depend on agriculture and fishing, as they have done for centuries. In cities such as Bergen and Tromsø, and towns like Svolvær, traditional wooden houses and churches and flanked by modern hotels and facilities. In the many small ports visited, such as Brønnøysund and Skjervøy, quaint little houses huddle in the midst of imposing landscapes.

This is an intimate encounter with history and culture. All guests on this coastal voyage experience a wonderful range of geology and geography, moods and moments. The 2000 km long coast takes our ships from the temperate climes of the south, to the wild, desolate Finnmark plateau, a journey that brings with it dramatic changes in climate and landscape.

Endless day, endless night. Each season casts its own spell on the Norwegian coastline. As the ship changes latitude it may feel as if you are travelling through all the seasons in a single journey. Between the extremes of Midnight Sun and polar night, and between the temperate south and the Arctic north, natural light always plays an important role, dramatising the scenery and enhancing the experience. Whenever you choose to travel, your voyage will be unique.

HURTIGRUTEN SPRING - Three seasons in one journey (Apr to May)Spring in Norway is a beautiful adventure, a quiet explosion of life, smells, colours and light. Warmth returns to the shores of Norway and sunlight rejuvenates the coastline. Each week brings a marked increase in both daylight hours and the greenery of the fjords. During the voyage, see metre high snowdrifts to roaring waterfalls of melt water. At the higher latitudes of the Arctic region, snow is still seen well into spring.

HURTIGRUTEN SUMMER - Land of the Midnight Sun (1 Jun to 15 Sep)Brilliant warm sunshine bathes the shores, fjords, mountains peaks and bays in fire red, soft pink and golden yellow, complemented by the deep, soft greens of pine and hardwood. Come summer, the Land of the Midnight Sun truly lives up to its name. The intense, extended daylight, lasting 24 hours a day above the Arctic Circle, makes every Norwegian ‘night’ a joy to behold.

HURTIGRUTEN AUTUMN - The period of bright colours (16 Sep to 14 Nov)As summer fades, the Norwegian coastline shifts from one beautiful season to another. Hurtigruten sails on, into a season of autumnal colours; russet, ochre and rouge fill the mountainsides, hilltops and woods. See a sprinkling of snow on the highest peaks and witness nature prepare for the long winter ahead.

HURTIGRUTEN WINTER - Hunting the Arctic Lights (15 Nov to 31 Mar)Experience the natural, unspoilt beauty of the Norwegian winter aboard Hurtigruten. Winter is one of the most special times to explore Norway’s northern reaches. The landscape is covered in pure white snow and the air is fresh and crisp. The night sky teases you with the chance of witnessing the spectacular Northern Lights. Make the most of your trip and include exciting winter activities such as snowmobiling and dog-sledging.

Informality: No dressing up for dinner, no fuss, no frenzy. Our aim is to sail calmly through the crisp clean air, close to the ever-changing environment.

Cuisine: Menus are planned around fresh, seasonal ingredients and take advantage of local produce to satisfy every taste. The restaurants are fully licensed.

Crew: A multi - lingual Tour Manager is on board to assist with shore excursions, provide information on the highlights of the day and ensure that you will never forget your crossing of the Arctic Circle.

Simplicity: Occassionally there may be a local choir or band in one of the lounges for an evening or two, but there is no organised entertainment programme to detract from the gentler flow of your voyage.

Comfort: All the ships, except for the older, smaller vessels, have a lift, a library and a café serving snacks 24 hours a day (Norwegian Coastal Voyage only).

Cabins: Choose from a wide range of comfortable cabins. They vary in size and location, sometimes within the same grade, and as a general rule, outside accommodation on the higher decks has a picture window while the lower decks have potholes. Some ships offer cabins for disabled passengers.

The length of time the ship remains at each port of call varies from 15 minutes to several hours. In the larger towns, you have time at leisure to spend ashore, or participate in a wide range of excursions. At smaller ports, the stop is brief, although you may still have an opportunity to go ashore to explore fascinating small communities.

During Christmas and New Year, some ports of call may be cancelled to allow more time in those ports hosting specially organised festive celebrations. On 24 December, ships stay in port for 24 hours.

Join hurtigruten’s newest ship, MS Fram on a voyage to Spitsbergen, accompanied by distinguished lecturers with an in-depth knowledge of the country.

Remote, mysterious, extreme, the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen is the European doorway into the High Arctic. Part of the Svalbard archipelago, it is a land forged by ice and wind, ocean and snow, and by the endless days and endless nights of the polar seasons. Barely populated and bereft of roads, the only way to experience the mysterious majesty of Spitsbergen is from the sea and on foot.

Sixty percent of the archipelago is covered in glaciers and snowfields – the rest is jagged peak, Arctic desert and bitter tundra. Treeless and exposed, the island provides a sanctuary for some of the rarest and hardiest flora and fauna on Earth. During the months of high summer, polar bears can be seen at close hand as they roam the wastes in search of food. This supreme, solitary predator covers vast distances, and females can be observed sheltering their young in caves and coves along the coast. Spitsbergen is also home to white-furred Arctic foxes, reindeer, seals and walruses.

At 78˚ north, the tiny capital Longyearbyen (“long year town”) is far closer to the North Pole than any coastal base in Antarctica is to the South Pole. Yet the Gulf Stream manages to warm the local people as well as the breezes off the Greenland Sea, and the town has a buzzing, ski-town feel. There are schools, shops, restaurants, coal mines, even a post office dotted round Spitsbergen, as well as dozens of fascinating historic sites.

Spitsbergen, in spite of its proximity to the North Pole, has a relatively mild climate compared with other areas at the same latitude. In Longyearbyen the average summer temperature is 6˚C, and the highest ever recorded is 21.3˚C. Rain is scarce, with an average annual rain and snowfall of only 200 – 300 mm.

Spitsbergen is above the Arctic Circle and therefore benefits from the Midnight Sun during summer. This means 24 hours of sunlight to experience this unique landscape from April to late August.

BIRDLIFE AND BEARS As fierce as the wastes and weather, the sole king of this realm is the polar bear who shares this distant, beautiful wilderness with any number of kittiwakes, seals, Arctic foxes, whales and walruses. There are estimated to be some 3000 polar bears in the Svalbard archipelago. Magnificent and solitary, these animals grow to a staggering 700 kg and there is every chance that we will come across one of these awe-inspiring beasts as we cruise through the ice floes. There are also estimated to be more than 110 types of migratory birds in this region and our on-board team of experts will ensure that we get the best out of our wildlife viewing, both from the deck of our comfortable vessel and also from our daily shore visits by Polar Cirkel boats.

WALRUS AT THE 80˚ PARALLEL The beautiful Svalbard archipelago is host to over 170 species of plants, 110 types of migratory birds, and a mammal population that includes reindeer, walrus, seal, Arctic fox, whale and the majestic polar bear. The Gulf Stream has allowed the island’s 400 km long western coastline to become incredibly rich in animal and plant life, while the remote east is forever under the grips of the Arctic winter. The further north and east we explore, the more ice we will meet and this ice will gradually build up into large ice floes with seals resting on them. On rounding the northwest corner of Spitsbergen, we cross the 80th parallel, just 100 km from the North Pole.

HURTIGRUTEN

Join Hurtigruten on a voyage of exploration and discovery on board the MS Fram, specially designed for a safe and comfortable voyage in Polar Regions. To enrich your experience, onboard lecturers and MS Fram’s expert team of expedition staff offer presentations on the history, biology and geology of Antarctica along the way.

Antarctica is the last great wilderness, and with icebergs, seals, birds and whales, this formidable polar plateau is the optimum experience for the adventurous. The world’s highest, driest, coldest, cleanest continent, it leaves and indelible impression on the minds of all visitors. To take a voyage past Cape Horn, across Drake Passage to the peninsula is to join what is still an exclusive group of intrepid travelers inspired by the legacy of Antarctic exploration.

Everything rich in fauna, the southern ocean is a constant drama of survival and stealth. Leopard- and fur-seals; minke whales; several species of penguin and great flocks of seabirds – including the wandering albatross – give life to this surreally beautiful landscape. When you manage to tear your eyes away from the wildlife, the icebergs and glaciers present an equally enthralling sight. From the bow, every view is a photographer’s dream and the long austral summer day means there is plenty of opportunity to take it all in.

Average temperatures in the Antarctic winter range from -15 to -32ºC in the coastal regions. During the austral summer, however, temperatures on the Antarctic Peninsula are usually around a comparatively mild 0 – -5 ºC. Both the Falkland Islands and South Georgia have a cold, wet and windy climate with summer temperatures between 4 and 11ºC.

An invisible line at 66˚33’ north is known as the Arctic Circle. This is the southernmost point at which the sun shines uninterruptedly for 24 hours at least one day of the year. This takes place at the Arctic Circle on 21 June, when the polar day reaches its climax and the sun never dips below the horizon. The further north you go, the longer is the period when the Midnight Sun may be seen. At the North Cape, the sun is visible (weather permitting) from 13 May to 29 July.

The Midnight Sun - Arctic Circle

The FjordsThe fjords are the most familiar and alluring image of Norway; wild, rugged and peaceful, these water-filled wedges of space are visually stunning. The Norwegian fjords deeply indent most of the lengthy west coast of Norway and are very different in character. Some of them are wide, green and sunny, while in others the surrounding mountains plunge straight into the fjord, often with impressive waterfalls cascading down the mountain sides. The fjords were carved by glacial ice in river valleys thousands of years ago.

MIDNIGHT SUN

The Northern LightsThe Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon caused by electrically charged solar particles passing into the Earth’s atmosphere. Also known as the Aurora Borealis, which means “dawn of the north”, the aurora can appear abruptly during winter, filling the sky with great arcs as ghostly wisps in green, yellow, red and violet dancing above the horizon, before disappearing again. A celestial show which truly needs to be seen to be believed, everyone who has seen the Northern Lights have been caught in awe by this magical display.
