FLYSAS and Norwegian both have direct flights from Oslo to Alta and Kirkenes in Finnmark, often at very reasonable rates. They run every day and most days more than once, often with a short stop in Tromsø. From Tromsø there are multiple flights to Alta and Kirkenes every day. Within Northern Norway Widerøe is a good alternative, especially for shorter flights, since they can land in all the smaller airports in the region. SIGHTSEEING TO THE RUSSIAN BORDER AND THE MINING TOWN BJØRNEVATN A guided trip by bus to the Russian border and the iron ore mines in Bjørnevatn. Our first stop is “Skafferhullet”, the historical crossing point on the border between Norway and Russia. We visit the border and have views of the Russian community of Boris Gleb on the other side. Your guide will provide information on the various historical events which took place in this area. We continue to the mining town Bjørnevatn which has gone through

Holmen Husky invites you to join them on an exciting husky safari! You can drive your own dog team or just relax and enjoy the passing scenery! Eirik has been involved with dog sledding for 25 years, and has taken part in Europe’s longest sled dog race 13 times. VISIT HOLMEN HUSKY KENNELVisit our husky dog kennel just outside Alta centre for a guided tour around the kennel. The kennel consists of app. 70 Alaskan huskies that are used for both tourist tours and competitions. Eirik, the owner, has been dog sledding for 25 years and has participated in Finnmarksløpet 14 times, last time in 2012. Finnmarksløpet is the longest dog sled race in Europe, covering 1000 km and takes 5-6 days. After the tour you get coffee and biscuits in the lavvu (sami tent) around the bonfire and stories about rac-ing and keeping huskies. If the conditions are good you can add a taste of dog sledding with wagon while there.

DOG SLEDDING IN THE LAND OF THE ELKIn the summer it is possible to try dog sledding with a wagon. Drive yourself one way and relax in the wagon the other. We take you through the pine forest and along the Alta river. Afterwards there is coffee, cake and stories served in our lavvu (sami tent) by the campfire. Here you will learn we train our huskies, stories from the Finnmark race and other interesting facts about these amazing animals. HUSKY SUMMER RIDEWe have dogcarts on wheels. You go two people together on one cart. One is standing and steering and one is riding. You will be harnessing your own dogs, and we drive on a nice trail by the Alta river. After the trip we will make a campfire and tell you stories about races and our lifestyle with the dogs, together with something to drink and a piece of cake. If it is warmer than 12 degrees, we cannot go for a ride. Then it is too hot for our dogs.

THE ALTA RIVER BY CANOEAlta river is famous both for its history and salmon and now you have the chance to experience it by canoe. There are two options, half-day or full-day. Both tours starts at Bollo and ends in Alta Fjord (full day) or at the camping grounds in Øvre Alta (half day). It is also possible to start the full day trip from the dam in Sautso upon request. On the trip you will pass through the Alta Canyon, northern Europe’s larg-est canyon. You will have the chance to spot wildlife as you gently flow through forests and open areas. The trip down the river is also a culinary experience. We serve good local food grilled on an open fire on the riverbank. Sorrisniva offers exciting adventures all year round. In spring, summer and autumn they can give you a taste of the river life with riverboat rides up the famous Alta River. Experience the Finnmark nature and canyon from one of the traditional long and narrow riverboats. Also fishing trips on the Finnmark Plateau and staying in traditional sami tents (lavvus) can be arranged for smaller and larger groups. At the idyllic base next to the Alta River they have their renowned restaurant Laksestua where they serve local, short travelled food. RIVERBOAT RIDE ON THE ALTA RIVERWe are situated right on the banks of Norway’s best, and indeed world-famous, salmon-river. In the period late May to late August (depending on the depth of water in the river), we can offer excursions on the river in tradi-tional river-boats, whose experienced skippers guaran-tee you a safe and comfortable ride though rapids and cataracts.

Almost 20 km upriver, in the wildest and most beautiful part, we stop below the Gabofossen falls. From here, we gaze into the biggest canyon of Northern Europe.

HIKING TO SAUTSO AND ALTA CANYON

Join one of our experienced guides for a walk to the larges canyon in North-ern Europe, Sautso. From Gargia Mountain Lodge you start on the hike to-wards the edge of the canyon and back, a total of 4 hours. It starts steep, but on the tundra it will get flat and you will be able to see the vast land-scape of the Finnmark Plateu. At the top and edge of the canyon you have a fantastic view and you can see the Alta River at the bottom. During the tour the guide will tell stories about the people, nature and animals of our region, and on the edge you will be served coffee and snacks. The ground is rough so good shoes are necessary and you need to be reasonably fit.

The rock art in Alta is Norway’s only prehistoric cultural memorial on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the snow-free sea-son you can see the 7000 – 2000 year old rock carvings around the Alta museum from designated walkways. Either with a guide or on your own. In addition to the carvings you can also visit the museum where you can learn more about the exiting prehistory of the north and the history of Alta. Advanced booking is needed for guided tours.

Packages In the following pages you can find examples of tours in Finnmark, Northern Norway. They range from shorter city stays to round trips in Finnmark and are made to inspire visitors who wish to journey to the north. They are mainly winter programs, but with a summer example at the very end. We are currently working on a longer sum-mer brochure and this will be ready in 2012. All programs can be altered according to requests from guests and tour operators depending on length of stay, price range or activity requests.

Alta Museum is located in beautiful surroundings, beside the biggest

field of rock carvings in Northern Europe. The carvings are from 2,500 to

In the museum you can watch thrilling exhibitions about local history,

visit our shop and café, and enjoy a breathtaking view over the fjord.

CAMPFIRE’S BURNING

Delight in the total silence while sipping from a cup of hot tea or coffee

around an open campfire at Gargia Fjellstue (mountain lodge). Join us

on a trip out into the forest and sample our traditional life in the great

outdoors. Let the silence relax your mind. If we are lucky, we may catch

sight of one of the animals or birds living here. Around the campfire you

will learn more about the people, nature and animals of our region. It is

light until late in Finnmark and you will see just as much in the evening

as the day.

On request you can also stay at Gargia Mountain Lodge for dinner.

THE ALTA RIVER BY CANOE

Alta river is famous both for its history and salmon and now you have

the chance to experience it by canoe. The tour starts at Bollo and ends

in Øvre Alta. On the trip you will pass through the Alta Canyon, north-

ern Europe’s largest. Canyon. You will have the chance to spot wildlife

as you gently flow through forests and open areas. The trip down the

river is also a culinary experience. We serve good local food grilled on an

open fire on the riverbank. All necessary training will be provided and

the guides have years of experience and local knowledge.

Leisure time in the afternoon. We recommend the following option:

VISIT A HUSKY KENNEL

Visit either Holmen Husky or Northern Lights Husky for a tour around

their kennel. Both kennels have huskies that drive with tourists in the

winter an also participate in Finnmarksløpet, the longest dog sled race

in Europe, 1000 km.

If the conditions are good you can also try dog sledding with wagon.

Holmen Husky is open from 17:00 to 21:00

Northern Lights Husky is open from 18:00 to 19:30

NORTH CAPE EXCURSION

Take a trip to the northernmost point of Europe – a unique experience

in both stormy and calm weather and visit the charming fishing village

of Honningsvåg. Allow for plenty of time to stop as you might see both

reindeers on the tundra and eagles when driving along the Porsanger

fiord.

THE NORTH CAPE CLIFF AND VISITOR CENTRE

At North Cape enjoy the view from the famous North Cape cliff. Inside

you will get champagne and a certificate celebrating being at the “Top

of Europe”. Before leaving we recommend seeing the “four seasons” film

about life in the region, see the exhibitions in the hall and in the end you

Explore the northernmost town in Europe by night. Visit one of the local

Option: If you want to experience North Cape by night you can choose

to visit the North Cape cliff and hall at midnight. It is a fantastic place to

Leisure time in Honningsvåg in the morning. We can recommend trying

in Europe, or King Crab safari either by boat or by bus with 71 degrees

Nature and culture walk to holy Mt. Halde 10:00 -14:00

In the old Sami religion, everything and everyone had a soul or a guard-

ian spirit. A Halde. On this nature and culture walk our goal is one of

many holy places in old Sami religion and culture. You will see the place

where people would come to sacrifice objects and hear stories and learn

about Sami culture and tradition now and before. On the way to Mt.

Halde you will also learn about fauna and flora of the arctic Europe and

how climate change are already influencing the lives of the people living

in the north. The trip is about 3,5 kilometers and has an altitude differ-

ence of ≈190 meters. Afterwards you can choose to stay at Engholm and

visit the Huskies if they are not on holiday and have lunch at their lodge.


Walk to the Siida, it is located next to your hotel.

called the golf of the Tundra. There are small sami settlements along

the way and you can also stop in Kautokeino

Option: take a detour and visit Kautokeino, another Sami village, on the

way to Alta.

Here we recommend a stop to Juhl’s Silver Gallery, an old silver smith

located in the heart of the wilderness. Here you can see old Sami jewelry

as well as modern pieces. Well worth a stop, not only for the craftsman-

ship but the building is also unique. You will need an extra hour in driving

time to visit Kautokeino not including the time spent in the village.

Before heading for Kirkenes, you can try stopping at Gjesvær and join

DRIVE TO KIRKENES, CLOSE TO THE RUSSIAN BORDER

On the way you will drive through Sami land, along the fiord and also

pass several settlements. The drive takes app. 5-6 hours, but the day

is long and with daylight for 24 hours you can enjoy the view the whole

way and you need only be in Kirkenes before 23:00. Check in to Rica Arc-

tic Hotel in the city centre

Option: This trip can be combined with Hurtigruten, known as one of the

most beautiful costal voyages in the world. You can bring your car on

most ships and it sails from Honningsvåg at 14:30. You will then arrive in

Kirkenes the following morning at 09:45 and can continue the program.

ommend trying: King Crab safari by riverboat to the Russian Border line

10:00-12:30. Meet the King Crab in our crab traps as we visit Boris Gleb

– An Iconof Norwegian Russian border history. We serve you cloud ber-

ries with cream, coffe/tea at our facility at the borderline. You’ll learn

that the cultural history of the Laplanders and the orthodox church of

Russia are closely connected to the border area. You’ll be as close to the

borderline that you can almost touch it. However, trespassing is illegal.

Leisure day and relax in Kirkenes, you can for example drive to the Pas-

vik Valley, home of the Brown Bears and many other animals. Here Birk

Husky has a Viking Long House where they serve local food. Sightseeing

in Kirkenes is also recommended, with Pasvikturist, learn more about

the history of the area and how the wars and cold war has had an im-

pact.

For a wild and exciting experience why not try:

QUAD (ATV) MIDNIGHT SUN SAFARI TO THE BARENTS SEA

20:00-01:00

After we have picked you up and introduced you to our safety instruc-

tions, we will first start to Storskog, the official border crossing point

between Norway and Russia. During the trip you will learn more about

the history and culture of this region Then we will pass a wild and fas-

cinating mountain scenery, drive along the small border river and finally

reach the Barents sea. Here is a former settlement called Grense Jakob-

selv with the King Oscar II’s stone chapel. We will enjoy a coffee break

here before heading back to Kirkenes. Driving license is required, trans-

port and clothing provided.


DRIVE FROM KIRKENES TO KARASJOK

Drive across the forest and tundra to the land of the Sami people in

Karasjok. On the way you will find small Sami settlements, arctic forest

and a chance to see wildlife from the area. Watch out for eagles and

reindeers especially. The driving time is estimated to 4 hours.

Take a stroll through this fascinating border town, full of history.

On a clear evening you can see the midnight sun (app. 20.05-30.07),

and remember its light 24 hours a day so you have plenty of time for

SIGHTSEEING TO THE RUSSIAN BORDER AND THE MINING TOWN

BJØRNEVATN 13:00-15:00

A guided trip by bus to the Russian border and the iron ore mines in

Bjørnevatn. Our first stop is “Skafferhullet”, the historical crossing point

on the border between Norway and Russia. We visit the border and have

views of the Russian community of Boris Gleb on the other side. Your

guide will provide information on the various historical events which

took place in this area. We continue to the mining town Bjørnevatn

which has gone through dramatic changes the last years. The mines

were closed in 1996 and were reopened again in 2009. Here we gain an

insight into 90 years of mining history. We continue our trip to the view-

point «Storfjell» where we get a nice view over the fjord.

Leisure time in Kirkenes in the afternoon

A visit to the Borderland museum is recommended, to learn even more

about the world wars and the cold war. They all had a special impact on

Kirkenes and the surroundings.

DAY 1: Arrive in Kirkenes - Check in at Rica Arctic Hotel

Take a stroll through this fascinating border town, full of history.

On a clear evening you can see the midnight sun (app. 20.05-30.07), and re-

member its light 24 hours a day so you have plenty of time for sightseeing!



SIGHTSEEING TO THE RUSSIAN BORDER AND THE MINING TOWN

BJØRNEVATN 13:00-15:00

A guided trip by bus to the Russian border and the iron ore mines in Bjørne-

vatn. Our first stop is “Skafferhullet”, the historical crossing point on the

border between Norway and Russia. We visit the border and have views of

the Russian community of Boris Gleb on the other side. Your guide will pro-

vide information on the various historical events which took place in this

area. We continue to the mining town Bjørnevatn which has gone through

dramatic changes the last years. The mines were closed in 1996 and were

reopened again in 2009. Here we gain an insight into 90 years of mining

history. We continue our trip to the viewpoint «Storfjell» where we get a

nice view over the fjord. Option: 19:40 – pick up at the hotel


20:00-01:00

After we have picked you up and introduced you to our safety instructions,

we will first start to Storskog, the official border crossing point between

Norway and Russia. During the trip you will learn more about the his-

tory and culture of this region Then we will pass a wild and fascinating

mountain scenery, drive along the small border river and finally reach the

Barents sea. Here is a former settlement called Grense Jakobselv with

the King Oscar II’s stone chapel. We will enjoy a coffee break here before

heading back to Kirkenes. Driving license is required, transport and cloth-

ing provided.The Quad safari can be changed to a day trip and the King

Crab safari can be changed to an afternoon trip upon request.

LEISURE TIME IN KIRKENES IN THE AFTERNOON

We recommend a trip to the Pasvik Valley, home of the Brown Bears of

Norway. Here you can visit Birk Husky for a dinner in their Viking Long

House and see their Huskies. App. 1 hour drive from Kirkenes, recom-

mended to book in advance.


Drive from Kirkenes to Karasjok. Drive across the forest and tundra to

the land of the Sami people in Karasjok. On the way you will find small

Sami settlements, arctic forest and a chance to see wildlife from the area.

Watch out for eagles and reindeers especially. The driving time is esti-

mated to 4 hours.

Option: If you want to visit North Cape it is possible to combine with this

trip. Either spend the day driving to North Cape and then down to Karas-

jok. Or you can drive to North Cape, spend one night there and continue to

Karasjok the next day. Check into Rica Hotel Karasjok





with an insight into Sami culture, history and mythology. Learn about the

lives of the Sami over the generations. Afterwards, you can walk around

the siida (Sami camp) in Sápmi Park.

Option: 13:00 A guided tour around the Sami Parliament

Ask in the reception at your hotel for directions and information (Monday

to Friday).

14:45 – Drive to Engholm Lodge, app. 15 minutes drive from Rica.

SUMMER HUSKY CAMP

In summer you have the opportunity to experience the sled dogs from

Engholm Husky when they have their summer holiday. We bring the dogs

to an island in the middle of a lake, app 20 minutes’ drive from Karasjok.

Paddle with canoes to the 3dog island2 where you will meet

these happy and very social dogs at their holiday camp. Paddle along with

them when they are exercised by swimming or maybe you would even like

to swim with them. Included is also a memorable wilderness meal around

the camp fire or in the traditional Sami tent (lavvu).


Drive to Kirkenes through Finland to experience the vast Finnish forest

Northern Finland is known for its forests and you can experience this by

driving to Kirkenes through Finland. Here you have an opportunity to

visit for example Inari, a typical village in Northern Finland. They can offer

among other activities a cruise on lake Inari. Check in to Rica Arctic Hotel

when in Kirkenes. 16:00 – deliver the rental car by the hotel

Leisure time in Kirkenes in the evening.

All services provided by North Adventure are provided to the cus-tomer on the following terms and conditions. All prices quoted by North Adventure are indicative only and are subject to dates of travel and availability.

Activities and cancellation: The providers of activities and transports may cancel the excursions due to weather conditions and safety concerns for the clients. If an alter-native activity is offered and the client agrees to join this, there will be no refund for the activities. Additional costs may be imposed for back-up solutions with a higher cost than the original program.
